Influences On The Commitment To And Focus Of Community Engagement At Colleges And Universities: A Multiple-Case Study, Melissa Mcilroy Hawkins Sep 2010

Influences On The Commitment To And Focus Of Community Engagement At Colleges And Universities: A Multiple-Case Study, Melissa Mcilroy Hawkins

Theses and Dissertations

Colleges and universities have embraced the importance of community engagement, not only as a tool for student development but, also, as a responsibility of the institution to address societal needs and problems. Research is lacking, however, on how institutions with varying missions, histories and cultures perceive their role in the community, what motivates an institution's commitment to community engagement and what influences the focus of those initiatives. The qualitative study investigates the external and internal influences that may impact an institution's commitment to community engagement, particularly why and how a college or university responds to community needs. The comparative study …

Factors Influencing The Academic Success Of Second Generation Immigrant College Students, Natalya V. Boureiko Sep 2010

Factors Influencing The Academic Success Of Second Generation Immigrant College Students, Natalya V. Boureiko

The changing demographic situation in the U.S. creates paramount social problems as the population of immigrants grows. Because the higher education is the most effective tool for incorporating the immigrant populations into the society, the purpose of the proposed study was to determine what students' characteristics, parents' characteristics, as well as students' actions affect the academic attainment versus grade point average (GPA) of immigrant population in college. The study was based on longitudinal datasets NPSAS 2000, NPSAS 2004, and NPSAS 2008. There were three cross-sectional samples and statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and stepwise regression. The findings of the study …

She's Leaving Home: The Effect Of College Experiences On Homeschooled Students, Henry Thomas Smiley Sep 2010

She's Leaving Home: The Effect Of College Experiences On Homeschooled Students, Henry Thomas Smiley

Theses and Dissertations

Most existing homeschool research focuses on one of two concerns: the efficacy of home education and the socialization of the homeschooled student. The purpose of this study was to examine how the beliefs, values, and worldviews of homeschooled students were affected by their experiences at the post-secondary level, specifically in the multicultural environment of public four-year colleges and universities. Data were collected through interviews with eleven participants: six homeschooling parents and five homeschooled students. Homeschooled students who formed close relationships with students unlike themselves and who were involved in leadership roles in their respective post-secondary institutions seemingly assimilated different worldviews …

Timely Correction Of Misplaced Endotracheal Tubes: A Model For Studying Critical Radiology Result Communication, Philip Johannes Butler Sep 2010

Timely Correction Of Misplaced Endotracheal Tubes: A Model For Studying Critical Radiology Result Communication, Philip Johannes Butler

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Clinical management of misplaced endotracheal tubes provides a compelling model to study the communication of critical radiology results: abnormal findings are clearly defined, require a narrow range of actions, and can be followed in subsequent radiographs. In this study, we assessed rates of endotracheal tube correction following misplacement and correlated those rates with communication practices. A manual screen was done of radiology reports from 11/2008-6/2009 at Yale New Haven to identify patients with endotracheal tube misplacement. Patients were included in the study if misplacement was verified by image measurement, if there was evidence of endotracheal tube placement for more than …

New Findings For Contemporary Marketing To Black Men: A Content Analysis Of Alcoholic Beverage Ad Appeals From Ebony And Gq Magazines, Joshua Jedidiah Myers Sep 2010

New Findings For Contemporary Marketing To Black Men: A Content Analysis Of Alcoholic Beverage Ad Appeals From Ebony And Gq Magazines, Joshua Jedidiah Myers

Theses

The present study uses content analysis to investigate differences in alcoholic beverage advertisement appeals, from Ebony and Gentlemen's Quarterly magazines, aimed at Black men in contrast to the mainstream male demographic. The present study reports that there are no significant statistical differences between ad appeals aimed at Black men and the mainstream male demographic. Consequently, it is suggested that cultural unawareness has displaced racial and ethnic stereotyping in contemporary marketing to Black men. Future research should concern appeals Black media make to their own markets to expose the biases of Black consumer groups who misrepresent the issue of race in …

Antifolate Modulators Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling As Cancer Therapeutics, Scott Rothbart Sep 2010

Antifolate Modulators Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling As Cancer Therapeutics, Scott Rothbart

Theses and Dissertations

Since its discovery, it was appreciated that the antifolate pemetrexed had multiple targets within folate metabolism. This laboratory was instrumental in showing that pemetrexed elicited its primary action as a thymidylate synthase inhibitor. Unusual for an antifolate, pemetrexed showed significant clinical activity against malignant pleural mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancer. Accordingly, the FDA recently issued first-line approvals for pemetrexed in these diseases, leading us to question whether the effects of pemetrexed on other folate-dependent targets could explain this atypical clinical activity of the drug. Studies in this dissertation showed that in addition to thymidylate synthase inhibition, pemetrexed was also …

A Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Approach To Supervised Selection And Prognostic Marker Identification For Malignant Astrocytic Glioma Patients, Vinay Ravindrakumar Raj Sep 2010

A Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Approach To Supervised Selection And Prognostic Marker Identification For Malignant Astrocytic Glioma Patients, Vinay Ravindrakumar Raj

Theses and Dissertations

Malignant astrocytic gliomas, like Glioblastoma Multiforme and Anaplastic Astrocytoma, are among the deadliest forms of brain tumors with varying periods of survival. Currently, the risk of a glioma patient is mostly measured by prognostic models with clinical prognostic markers and has limited success. In this study a Bioinformatics & Computational Biology approach to identify candidate prognostic markers from a combination of clinical, genetic and gene expression variables (related to multiple significant pathways targeted by classical genetic alterations) involved in malignant glioma progression, was developed to explain variation in survival. The initial selection of molecular variables for prognosis modeling was done …

Effect Of College Health Course Enrollment On Interest, Knowledge And Behavior, Britney Finley Sep 2010

Effect Of College Health Course Enrollment On Interest, Knowledge And Behavior, Britney Finley

Theses and Dissertations

Health of college students is a national public health concern, however general health courses which cover topics of concern such as responsible sexual behaviors, alcoholism, drug abuse, tobacco use, nutrition, weight management, cardiovascular health, and mental health issues are rarely a required course for college students. University health education faculty, health educators who teach students the appropriate practices of health education, must do what they are trained to do: teach college students healthy lifestyle behaviors and effective ways of changing negative behaviors. This quasi-experimental study investigates the extent to which the undergraduate general health courses are impacting the perceived knowledge, …

Fetal Breathing Movement And Its Distinctive Characteristics In Bio-Magnetic Data, Umit Deniz Ulusar Sep 2010

Fetal Breathing Movement And Its Distinctive Characteristics In Bio-Magnetic Data, Umit Deniz Ulusar

Theses and Dissertations

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is widely used to study magnetic fields generated by the electrical activity of the human brain and can also be applied for fetal neurological health assessment. The fetal MEG (fMEG) signals are often contaminated with other bio-magnetic signals such as fetal breathing movement (FBM), which acts as an interfering factor for fetal neurological signals. This study was carried out to identify the bio-magnetic signals pertinent to the FBM. The fMEG signals were captured using superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) and the FBMs were recorded by an ultrasound-based video technique. The simultaneous recording is challenging since SQUIDs are extremely …

Improving Information Products For System 2 Decision Support, Neal Gibson Sep 2010

Improving Information Products For System 2 Decision Support, Neal Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

The creation, maintenance, and management of Information Product (IP) systems that are used by organizations for complex decisions represent a unique set of challenges. These challenges are compounded when the purpose of such a systems is also for knowledge creation and dissemination. Information quality research to date has focused mainly upon treating IP independent from the actual users, despite the obvious interdependency between the two. Research in cognitive psychology has established a dual-process model for human cognition. Designing IP systems in recognition of these differing methods of human cognition represents a new approach to improving their quality. Education data and …

In Search Of Critical Thinking: A Case Study Of A Midwestern University's Center For Teaching Excellence, Lourene Pike Thaxton Sep 2010

In Search Of Critical Thinking: A Case Study Of A Midwestern University's Center For Teaching Excellence, Lourene Pike Thaxton

Theses and Dissertations

Research indicated that students often graduate from colleges and universities without encountering critical thinking skills in undergraduate coursework. The first national report raising concerns over the declining quality of education stemmed from the National Commission on Excellence in Education (1983), and findings based on disappointing test scores were essentially repeated with the Spellings Report (2006) twenty years later. Although numerous scholars, experts, and politicians voiced concerns regarding what were perceived to be deficient methods of instruction in higher education, missing were the voices of professors who devised the curriculum and delivered student instruction. The intention of this study was to …

Signal Detection Framework Using Semantic Text Mining Techniques, Sithu D. Sudarsan Sep 2010

Signal Detection Framework Using Semantic Text Mining Techniques, Sithu D. Sudarsan

Theses and Dissertations

Signal detection is a challenging task for regulatory and intelligence agencies. Subject matter experts in those agencies analyze documents, generally containing narrative text in a time bound manner for signals by identification, evaluation and confirmation, leading to follow-up action e.g., recalling a defective product or public advisory for potential flu outbreak. Technical challenges to achieve effective signal detection include mining unstructured data, increasing document collections, and presence of multi-domain vocabulary. Lack of annotation and multi-domain vocabulary makes traditional semantic web mining ineffective. Use of heuristics to enhance bag-of-words type text mining to semantic text mining is a novel idea attempted …
