Physical Interaction Between Vivid And White Collar Complex Regulates Photoadaptation In Neurospora, Chen-Hui H. Chen, Bradley S. Demay, Amy S. Gladfelter, Jay Dunlap, Jennifer J. Loros
Dartmouth Scholarship
Photoadaptation, the ability to attenuate a light response on prolonged light exposure while remaining sensitive to escalating changes in light intensity, is essential for organisms to decipher time information appropriately, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In Neurospora crassa, VIVID (VVD), a small LOV domain containing blue-light photoreceptor protein, affects photoadaptation for most if not all light-responsive genes. We report that there is a physical interaction between VVD and the white collar complex (WCC), the primary blue-light photoreceptor and the transcription factor complex that initiates light-regulated transcriptional responses in Neurospora. Using two previously characterized VVD mutants, we show …

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
This white paper provides a means for indigenous peoples to communicate current information and impacts among constituents and tribal groups. These concepts are very important in understanding how these groups disseminate policy and resource utilization impacts such as energy policies related to traditional knowledge associated to generic resources. In todays society the development of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) is imminent yet, large segments of the world remain marginalized. Our contention is that peer-to-peer and inter-institutional networks can be used to connect local with global systems to close this divide. Using today virtual and digital technologies the gap can be bridged …

Risk Reduction And Resource Pooling On A Cooperation Task, Cynthia J. Pietras, Don R. Cherek, Scott D. Lane, Oleg Tcheremissine
Risk Reduction And Resource Pooling On A Cooperation Task, Cynthia J. Pietras, Don R. Cherek, Scott D. Lane, Oleg Tcheremissine
The Psychological Record
Two experiments investigated choice in adult humans on a simulated cooperation task to evaluate a risk-reduction account of sharing based on the energy-budget rule. The energy-budget rule is an optimal foraging model that predicts risk-averse choices when net energy gains exceed energy requirements (positive energy budget) and risk-prone choices when net energy gains fall below energy requirements (negative energy budget). Because sharing can minimize variability in energy gain (i.e., is a riskaverse strategy), the model predicts that sharing should occur under positive but not negative budget conditions. Energy budgets were modeled by substituting money gains for energy gains and earnings …
Understanding The Role Of Novel Gene-Environmental And Gene-Gene Interactions In The Pathogenesis Of Age Related Macular Degeneration, Juan A. Ayala-Haedo
Understanding The Role Of Novel Gene-Environmental And Gene-Gene Interactions In The Pathogenesis Of Age Related Macular Degeneration, Juan A. Ayala-Haedo
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to assess single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in NOS2 A, ESR1, ESR2 and MMP-2 genes that may affect the risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and may interact with environmental factors such as estrogen exposure and smoking, thereby modifying their effect on AMD. AMD is an ocular degenerative disease with known genetic and environmental factors. However, the disease risk genes identified so far account only for part of the genetic attributable risk and the role of new disease risk genes remain to be evaluated. For non-genetic risk factors, the most extensively analyzed are smoking and …

Cumulative Organ Dysfunction In The Ed As A Predictor Of Mortality In Patients With Severe Sepsis, Martina Sanders-Spright
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Cumulative Organ Dysfunction in the ED as a Predictor of Mortality in Patients with Severe Sepsis Martina Trinese Sanders-Spight, (Sponsored by: Charles R. Wira III), Department of Emergency Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT HYPOTHESIS AND SPECIFIC AIMS OF STUDY: The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the hypothesis that increasing cumulative organ dysfunction in patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with severe sepsis or septic shock correlates with 28-day and total in-hospital mortality, mechanical ventilation requirement and vasopressor use within 72 hours of presentation. This investigation also aims to elucidate differences in patients …
