Less Talk; More Action: Sbar As An Interactive Approach For Ethical Decision- Making, Francine Mancuso Parker Edd, Rn, Cne, Libba Reed Mcmillan Phd, Rn

Journal of Health Ethics

Oftentimes as educators, instructors approach ethics education as if students have all the time in the world to pontificate. This article provides an alternative teaching strategy where there is less ‘talk’, and more action as the SBAR model is utilized in the ethical decision making process. A case study depicting a difficult patient care situation provides the backdrop for a discussion of ethical decision making as a skill which can be developed when sound reasoning and principles are applied by the nursing student or novice nurse. By assuring that students have a working understanding of the concept of advocacy from …

Organ Donation Ethics: Are Donors Autonomous Within Collective Networks?, Michele Battle-Fisher Mph, Ma

Journal of Health Ethics

Can and will a person become an organ donor? Before such an altruistic act will occur, there is the ethic behind the action. There is an internalization of an ethic that the person agrees or disagrees with organ donation, no matter the variant. There is a large sense of agency and responsibility over the integrity of one’s body. We do care what our “network” thinks about our personally held norms of living donation and sanctity of the body. I present the position that understanding of the norms of living organ donation requires an examination of the personal social “network” surrounding …

Doctor For Me? No Sir-E! Common Diseases That Miners Faced During The Early 1900s, Alicia Hansen Dec 2010

Doctor For Me? No Sir-E! Common Diseases That Miners Faced During The Early 1900s, Alicia Hansen

Theory and Practice: HIST430

Today, going to the doctor is about as eventful as going to the bank. We get check-ups once a year and make a visit every time we get a sniffle, but during the late part of the nineteenth century and early part of the twentieth century people were more reluctant to step foot in the doctor's office in fear of what the diagnosis might be. During the time where you could find an ad for cigarettes in medical journals or buy Adrenalin shots out of a catalog, people did not put their health as their number one priority whether it …

More Than One In Ten American Households Relies On Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Benefits, Jessica A. Bean, Marybeth J. Mattingly Dec 2010

More Than One In Ten American Households Relies On Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Benefits, Jessica A. Bean, Marybeth J. Mattingly

Carsey Publications

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is one of the most responsive federal programs to economic downturns, as evidence by the increases in SNAP use between 2007 and 2009. Nationally, more than one in ten households relies on SNAP benefits, and the rate is even higher in rural areas, with more than 13 percent of households reporting use. This brief examines the trends in SNAP use across the United States since the recession began in 2007 and considers the impact of legislation in the Congress on those who rely on SNAP to make ends meet.

Source Identification In Two Criminal Cases Using Phylogenetic Analysis Of Hiv-1 Dna Sequences, Diane I. Scaduto, Jeremy M. Brown, Wade C. Haaland, Derrick J. Zwickl, David M. Hillis, Michael L. Metzker

Faculty Publications

Phylogenetic analysis has been widely used to test the a priori hypothesis of epidemiological clustering in suspected transmission chains of HIV-1. Among studies showing strong support for relatedness between HIV samples obtained from infected individuals, evidence for the direction of transmission between epidemiologically related pairs has been lacking. During transmission of HIV, a genetic bottleneck occurs, resulting in the paraphyly of source viruses with respect to those of the recipient. This paraphyly establishes the direction of transmission, from which the source can then be inferred. Here, we present methods and results from two criminal cases, State of Washington v Anthony …

Salicylic Acid Diminishes Staphylococcus Aureus Capsular Polysaccharide Type 5 Expression, Lucia P. Alvarez, Maria S. Barbagelata, Mariana Gordiola, A. L. Cheung Dec 2010

Salicylic Acid Diminishes Staphylococcus Aureus Capsular Polysaccharide Type 5 Expression, Lucia P. Alvarez, Maria S. Barbagelata, Mariana Gordiola, A. L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Capsular polysaccharides (CP) of serotypes 5 (CP5) and 8 (CP8) are major Staphylococcus aureus virulence factors. Previous studies have shown that salicylic acid (SAL), the main aspirin metabolite, affects the expression of certain bacterial virulence factors. In the present study, we found that S. aureus strain Reynolds (CP5) cultured with SAL was internalized by MAC-T cells in larger numbers than strain Reynolds organisms not exposed to SAL. Furthermore, the internalization of the isogenic nonencapsulated Reynolds strain into MAC-T cells was not significantly affected by preexposure to SAL. Pretreatment of S. aureus strain Newman with SAL also enhanced internalization into MAC-T …

Community Health Sciences

Background: Maternal and newborn mortality rates remain unacceptably high, especially where the majority of births occur in home settings or in facilities with inadequate resources. The introduction of emergency obstetric and newborn care services has been proposed by several organizations in order to improve pregnancy outcomes. However, the effectiveness of emergency obstetric and neonatal care services has never been proven. Also unproven is the effectiveness of community mobilization and community birth attendant training to improve pregnancy outcomes. Methods/Design: We have developed a cluster-randomized controlled trial to evaluate the impact of a comprehensive intervention of community mobilization, birth attendant training and …

Improved Protein Surface Comparison And Application To Low-Resolution Protein Structure Data., Lee Sael, Daisuke Kihara Dec 2010

Improved Protein Surface Comparison And Application To Low-Resolution Protein Structure Data., Lee Sael, Daisuke Kihara

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Recent advancements of experimental techniques for determining protein tertiary structures raise significant challenges for protein bioinformatics. With the number of known structures of unknown function expanding at a rapid pace, an urgent task is to provide reliable clues to their biological function on a large scale. Conventional approaches for structure comparison are not suitable for a real-time database search due to their slow speed. Moreover, a new challenge has arisen from recent techniques such as electron microscopy (EM), which provide low-resolution structure data. Previously, we have introduced a method for protein surface shape representation using the 3D Zernike descriptors …

Uterine Epithelial Cell Regulation Of Dc-Sign Expression Inhibits Transmitted/Founder Hiv-1 Trans Infection By Immature Dendritic Cells, Daniel O. Ochiel, Christina Ochsenbauer, John C. Kappes, Mimi Ghosh, John V. Fahey, Charles R. Wira Dec 2010

Uterine Epithelial Cell Regulation Of Dc-Sign Expression Inhibits Transmitted/Founder Hiv-1 Trans Infection By Immature Dendritic Cells, Daniel O. Ochiel, Christina Ochsenbauer, John C. Kappes, Mimi Ghosh, John V. Fahey, Charles R. Wira

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Sexual transmission accounts for the majority of HIV-1 infections. In over 75% of cases, infection is initiated by a single variant (transmitted/founder virus). However, the determinants of virus selection during transmission are unknown. Host cell-cell interactions in the mucosa may be critical in regulating susceptibility to infection. We hypothesized in this study that specific immune modulators secreted by uterine epithelial cells modulate susceptibility of dendritic cells (DC) to infection with HIV-1.

Methodology/Principal Findings:

Here we report that uterine epithelial cell secretions (i.e. conditioned medium, CM) decreased DC-SIGN expression on immature dendritic cells via a transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) …

Nurse Anesthetist's Perceptions Regarding Utilization Of Anesthesia Support Personnel, Mary Ford Dec 2010

Nurse Anesthetist's Perceptions Regarding Utilization Of Anesthesia Support Personnel, Mary Ford

Theses and Dissertations

Anesthesia support personnel (ASP) provide direct support to health care providers administering anesthesia (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists [CRNAs] and anesthesiologists). Because these anesthesia providers are caring for a patient whom they cannot legally or ethically leave unattended, ASP are employed to bring them extra supplies or equipment, prepare equipment for the case, maintain and clean equipment, and generally function as directed by the anesthesia provider. Given the limited literature and importance of ASP in maintaining equipment essential to safe practice, it is necessary to describe the population to understand who is functioning in this role to insure that these individuals …
