More Than Bows And Arrows: Subversion And Double-Consciousness In Native American Storytelling, Anastacia M. Schulhoff Oct 2010

More Than Bows And Arrows: Subversion And Double-Consciousness In Native American Storytelling, Anastacia M. Schulhoff

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

W. E. B. Du Bois‘ legendary reflections on the ―peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one‘s self through the eyes of others‖ has been applied almost exclusively to the souls of African American people (Du Bois 1903). This thesis shows how the concept of double-consciousness is alive in the stories told by Native Americans. I draw upon data from two websites that have recorded the stories told by ―exemplary indigenous elders, historians, storytellers and song carriers‖ and their oral traditions that serve the ―purpose of cultural preservation, education, and race reconciliation‖ (Wisdom of the Elders, 2009). …

Comparison Of Risky Decision Making Processes In Dyads And Individuals, Moumita Mukherjee Oct 2010

Comparison Of Risky Decision Making Processes In Dyads And Individuals, Moumita Mukherjee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The thesis compared the likelihood of taking risks in dyads and individuals in

varying situations. Patterns of risky decision making were examined in the standard risky

choice task and a novel risk management task. The relative successes of two theories of

risky decision making were assessed: Prospect Theory emphasizes perceptual and

psychophysical processes, whereas Security-Potential/Aspiration Level Theory

emphasizes dispositional and motivational processes. The thesis also examined dyads’

decision behavior in light of competing social influence perspectives regarding risky

versus cautious shifts and group polarization.

Participants, as individuals or as part of a dyad, made decisions in 23 trials about

hypothetical …

Plasma Mediated Molecular Delivery, Richard J. Connolly Oct 2010

Plasma Mediated Molecular Delivery, Richard J. Connolly

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Non-viral delivery of plasmid DNA has traditionally relied upon physical forces applied directly to target tissues. These physical methods typically involve contact between an applicator and the target tissue and often cause transient patient discomfort. To overcome the contact-dependent limitations of such delivery methodologies, an atmospheric direct current plasma source was developed to deposit ionized gas molecules onto localized treatment sites. The deposition of charged species onto a treatment site can lead to the establishment of an electric field with strengths similar to those used for traditional electroporation. In vitro experiments proved that this technology could transiently permeabilize cell membranes …

Neural Coding And Decoding, Alexander Dimitrov Oct 2010

Neural Coding And Decoding, Alexander Dimitrov

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Methods based on Rate Distortion theory have been successfully used to cluster stimuli and neural responses in order to study neural codes at a level of detail supported by the amount of available data. They approximate the joint stimulus-response distribution by quantizing paired stimulus-response observations into smaller reproductions of the stimulus and response spaces. An optimal quantization is found by maximizing an information-theoretic cost function subject to both equality and inequality constraints, in hundreds to thousands of dimensions. This analytical approach has several advantages over other current approaches:

  • it yields the most informative approximation of the encoding scheme given the …

The Patient Centered Medical Home: Federal, State And Local Initiatives To Transform Primary Care. The First Of An Occasional Series In Interprofessional Education And Care In The Patient-Centered Medical Home, Brooke Salzman

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

The Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) is rapidly emerging as one prototype for redesigning health care delivery, restructuring reimbursement, and reestablishing the critical value of primary care. The actual term “medical home” was introduced by the American Academy of Pediatrics, (AAP) in 1967, initially referring to a central location for archiving a child’s medical record. In 2002, the AAP expanded the medical home concept to include care characterized as accessible, continuous, comprehensive, patient-centered, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective. In 2004, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) embraced the model in its Future of Family Medicine project report, and in …

Clinical Care Plan, Interprofessional Course, Marcia Levinson, Kathryn Shaffer, Amy Egras

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Evidence suggests interprofessional collaborative practice significantly improves patient outcomes, reduces mortality and enhances quality-of-life.1 Person-focused care demands collaboration among professions in a team approach to address multiple issues including illness, prevention, and health promotion activities. Key elements of successful implementation of interprofessional education are supported in Thomas Jefferson University’s Clinical Care Plan, Interprofessional Course (CCPIC) that includes increasing knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, and competencies of other health professions, collaborating in teams, recognizing the patient as the expert, and communicating effectively.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Jefferson Interprofessional Education and Care Newsletter. In this issue, Dr. Zukowsky and colleagues describe the value of high-fidelity simulation to train interprofessional teams in high-risk high-stakes care. Their successful model has important implications for preparing teams to perform optimally during critical, and often stressful, clinical situations where expertise in both technical and team skills is imperative for best patient outcomes. Dr. Levinson and colleagues describe an exciting interprofessional care planning course which, for the first time at Jefferson, has brought senior Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), Nursing, Pharmacy and Medical students together …

Laboratory Measures Of Impulsivity: A Comparison Of Women With Or Without Childhood Aggression, Charles W. Mathias, Donald M. Dougherty, Dawn M. Marsh, F Gerard Moeller, Lisa R. Hicks, Kevin Dasher, Lee Bar-Eli

The Psychological Record

This study compared laboratory models of impulsive behavior in 60 women aged 18-40 yrs. Three groups of 20 Ss were recruited: (1) normal controls, (2) women on probation/parole without childhood aggression (Fight-), and (3) women on probation/parole with childhood aggression (Fight+). Two types of impulsivity paradigms were compared: response-disinhibition/attentional [Immediate/Delayed Memory Task (IMT/DMT)] and delayed-reward [Single Key Impulsivity Paradigm (SKIP)] models. The Fight+ group performed more impulsively, responding with more commission errors (IMT/DMT) and shorter delay choices (SKIP) compared to either the Fight- or Control groups. Compared to the SKIP, the IMT and DMT tasks had larger effect sizes and …

Endothelial Cell Capture Of Heparin-Binding Growth Factors Under Flow, Bing Zhao, Changjiang Zhang, Kimberly Forsten-Williams, Jun Zhang, Michael Fannon

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Publications

Circulation is an important delivery method for both natural and synthetic molecules, but microenvironment interactions, regulated by endothelial cells and critical to the molecule's fate, are difficult to interpret using traditional approaches. In this work, we analyzed and predicted growth factor capture under flow using computer modeling and a three-dimensional experimental approach that includes pertinent circulation characteristics such as pulsatile flow, competing binding interactions, and limited bioavailability. An understanding of the controlling features of this process was desired. The experimental module consisted of a bioreactor with synthetic endothelial-lined hollow fibers under flow. The physical design of the system was incorporated …
