The Effect Of Drug And Sexual Risk Behaviors With Social Network And Non-Network Members On Homeless Youths’ Sexually Transmissible Infections And Hiv Testing, Kimberly A. Tyler, Lisa A. Melander

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Background — The study examined whether engaging in drug and sexual risk behaviors with social network and non-network members (strangers) differentially affected the decision to test for sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and HIV. Methods — A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 249 homeless youths aged 14–21 years. Results — Multivariate analyses revealed that females were over three times more likely than males to test for STIs (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.34; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.54–7.25). For every one unit increase in age, there was a 37% increase in the likelihood of having tested for STIs (AOR = …

Bidirectional, Unidirectional, And Nonviolence: A Comparison Of The Predictors Among Partnered Young Adults, Lisa A. Melander, Harmonijoie Noel, Kimberly A. Tyler Jan 2010

Bidirectional, Unidirectional, And Nonviolence: A Comparison Of The Predictors Among Partnered Young Adults, Lisa A. Melander, Harmonijoie Noel, Kimberly A. Tyler

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In order to understand more fully the context and impact of intimate partner violence (IPV), it is important to make distinctions between different types of relationship aggression. As such, the current study longitudinally examines the differential effects of childhood, adolescent, and demographic factors on three different partner violence groups: those who experience bidirectional IPV, those who experience unidirectional IPV, and those who do not experience either form of IPV. Multinomial logistic regression results reveal that depressive symptoms and lower partner education predict bidirectional when compared to unidirectional IPV and nonviolence. In contrast, other risk factors such as illicit drug use …

Parental Timing And Depressive Symptoms In Early Adulthood, Christina D. Falci, Jeylan Mortimer, Harmonijoie Noel Jan 2010

Parental Timing And Depressive Symptoms In Early Adulthood, Christina D. Falci, Jeylan Mortimer, Harmonijoie Noel

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Using data from a panel of 459 women, we find that early parents (birth) report higher levels of depressive symptoms in young adulthood (roughly age 29) compared to later parents (first birth in their 20s) or nonparents. Early parenting is also associated with more stressors and fewer resources in young adulthood. As young adults, early parents have lower educational attainment, less secure employment and a weaker sense of personal control; they also experience greater financial strain and more traumatic life events than later and nonparents. By the end of their 20s, early parents are also more likely to be single …

Iqbal And Empathy, Darrell A. H. Miller Jan 2010

Iqbal And Empathy, Darrell A. H. Miller

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay argues that empathy does and should play an important, albeit limited role, in a judge’s decision making process. Specifically, empathy is essential for making correct, principled, and unbiased judgments, because empathy is one of the few means we have to understand human motivation. Empathy is a crucial cognitive mechanism that can help compensate for common cognitive bias. As such, empathy, appropriately restricted, should be an accepted and meaningful tool for judges to use in evaluating the sufficiency of complaints, especially as they relate to Iqbal’s plausibility pleading standard.

Evidence Of Sustainability Communication In Major League Baseball: A Website Analysis, Dorene Ciletti, John Lanasa, Diane Ramos, Ryan Luchs, Junying Lou

AMTP Proceedings 2010

Based on a review of Major League baseball team websites, this study provides insight into team communication of sustainability principles and practices through an analysis of self-presented sustainability content. Websites for thirty-one (31) teams were examined for content. Elkington’s (1997) triple bottom line dimensions and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) indicator codes and definitions were constructs for the model and aligned to social, environmental, and economic principles for categories of sustainability practices. Researchers found that while teams are including sustainability information to some extent, the majority highlight social issues on their home pages and subsequent pages; communication about environmental factors varies …

A Comparison Of The Violence Risk Appraisal Guide, Psychopathy Checklist-Revised, And Child And Adolescent Taxon Scale: Predictive Utility And Cross Cultural Generalizability, Michael Bruce Lister

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG) is a widely utilized measure for estimating the risk of violent reoffending among forensic populations. However, completing the VRAG can be a lengthy process as it requires entering scores from a second test, the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R), which must be administered separately and requires hours to complete. In order to reduce scoring time, the authors of the VRAG have developed a brief checklist, the Child and Adolescent Taxon Scale (CATS), which can be used in place of the PCL-R as a more efficient method of assessing psychopathy (Quinsey et al., 2004). Previous research …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Corporate Communication During Large-Scalebailey College Of Engineering And Technology Changes, Dawna M. Drum

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The success rate ofBailey College of Engineering and Technology implementations remains low, despite decades of scholarly research and popular advice. Whether success is defined by spending within the budget, on-time completion, functionality of the final implementation, or satisfaction of the users, few projects are deemed to be complete and resounding successes. One possible reason is inadequate communication during the change process, and many studies have examined aspects of change communication such as media choice, message content, and timing of the messages. What has been missing, however, is an assessment of these items' effectiveness across hierarchical levels within an organization undergoing …

Career Decisions: Goodness-Of-Fit And Attrition Of Teachers In Alternative Schools, Deidre S. Coulter

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teachers are the most important element in theEducation system (Stronge, 2002). However, studies of teachers in certain sectors are lacking. The paucity of research on teachers who work in the alternative school environment was a driving force behind this study, which is a case study of the characteristics of alternative schools, perceptions of teacher training, attrition, and goodness-of-fit. Interviews with teachers, administrators, and support staff in an alternative school were used to investigate interactions between teachers and students and between colleagues. Classroom observations of the teachers were used to help explore the classroom climate. Emergent themes such as communication, administrative …

Premises For Changing To Pbl, Anette Kolmos Jan 2010

Premises For Changing To Pbl, Anette Kolmos

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Although SoTL research provides results documenting the efficiency of problem-based and project-based learning, the process of change at the institutional levels all over the world is slow. Based on research and experience from the UNESCO Chair work all over the world, I point out seven premises for changing to PBL: governance and educational policy, research and political pragmatism, change at institutional and individual level, leadership, implementation, trust in students’ learning and global societies. These are premises at very different levels; however, in the global society they all play a role in the process of changing higher education. This essay places …

A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast Jan 2010

A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast

Plymouth Business School Theses

Volatility within the UK housing market is thought to be a significant factor driving instability in the wider macro economy. Research investigating the characteristics and behaviour of the housing market has suggested that under supply of housing is one of the key reasons for the high and increasing levels of house prices the nation has recently been experiencing. Consequently, much of the current government's housing policy is aimed at increasing the level of supply by reforming the planning system and increasing investment in the development of new housing. Under supply is also a major concern at the regional level, particularly …

Impact Of Ifrs Adoption On Stock Performance And Financial Indicators: A Comparative Study Between Germany And The Uk, Ashraf Elsayed Mostafa Elbakry Jan 2010

Impact Of Ifrs Adoption On Stock Performance And Financial Indicators: A Comparative Study Between Germany And The Uk, Ashraf Elsayed Mostafa Elbakry

Plymouth Business School Theses

The compulsory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) in Europe has been one of the most important developments in the accounting and finance literature in the last couple of years. IFRSs have promised to provide more accurate and transparent financial statements, and hence to be more value-relevant to investors than local GAAP. Because there are broadly two different accounting systems in force in Europe: the accounting system adopted in common-law countries and the accounting system adopted in code-law countries and because the nature and concept of each accounting system is entirely different, researchers believe that the compulsory adoption of …

Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers Jan 2010

Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers

Plymouth Business School Theses

Much of literature is predicated upon the assumption that learning occurring inside the workplace is related to developing expertise associated with the tasks for which the individual is employed and has a background in. This research investigates those individuals who acquire expertise in other disciplines and how the application of that additional expertise changes and enhances the individual and the organisation. By combining perspectives across the disciplinary boundaries and developing multidisciplinary expertise, these individuals demonstrate better methods of achieving business objectives, leading to faster, more imaginative solutions, more frequently, and with significantly less effort. The literature review commenced with defining …

Minor Parties In English Local Government, Luke Samuel Sloan Jan 2010

Minor Parties In English Local Government, Luke Samuel Sloan

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis examines the electoral performance of minor parties in English local government from 1973 to 2008, a period that has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of candidates from such parties. Beginning with an overall assessment of the extent to which candidates from minor parties have contested local elections and the level of success in being elected, the thesis then explores the spatial distribution of minor party candidates, the types of people that become candidates and, considering the relative lack of electoral success, their motivations for standing. Traditional studies of party systems frequently exclude parties that do not …

Molecular Recognition Of Aromatic Amines By Coumarin Substituted Azacrown Ether, Hiten Mehta, Harjinder Kaur, Shobhana Menon Jan 2010

Molecular Recognition Of Aromatic Amines By Coumarin Substituted Azacrown Ether, Hiten Mehta, Harjinder Kaur, Shobhana Menon

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

New chromogenic azacrown ether N[7-hydroxy-4-methyl-coumarin-8-methylene]-4-azadibenzo-18-crownether (HMCMADCE) was synthesised through the condensation reaction of 4-azadibenzo-18-crown- 6ether, 4-methyl,7-hydroxy coumarin and formaldehyde was used to investigate its behaviour towards the aromatic amines. All the aromatic primary amines gave specific colours in aqueous medium. The functional group recognition behaviour is further extended to study the estimation of the aromatic primary amine in commercial drug samples. The amines can be estimated in the presence of several functional groups like phenolic-OH, secondary and tertiary aromatic amines as well as aliphatic amines.

A Comparison Of Forgiveness Across Two Cultures: Lebanon And The United States, Zeina Yousof Jan 2010

A Comparison Of Forgiveness Across Two Cultures: Lebanon And The United States, Zeina Yousof

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research suggests that the propensity to forgive expressed by societies is often influenced by the cultural orientation of the society. Collectivistic societies tend to express a higher level of willingness to forgive than individualistic societies. This study examined how two samples of different cultural orientations, Lebanese and American, define forgiveness and express their feelings, thoughts and behavior towards a specific offender who has hurt them in the past. In addition to that, the willingness to forgive of the two samples was measured. Measurement instruments for this study consisted of the Enright Forgiveness Inventory and the Willingness to Forgive scale. These …
