Procter & Gamble’S Pur Purifier Of Water: How Global Corporate Philanthropy Builds Shareholder Value, Lisa Jones Christensen, Carol Seagle

Faculty Publications

“When are you going to change this Children’s Safe Drinking Water program and make money for your company? Surely Procter & Gamble wants you to profit on the water purification technology—you can’t sustain your program as a non-profit!”

Greg Allgood sighed internally at this question, as it seemed to surface frequently despite the continued and rapid growth of the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) program at P&G. Allgood (Director of the CSDW program) was not actually frustrated with the query, as he had an easy answer ready. Rather, he wished that people could more easily see how his team’s non-profit …

Genetic Characterization, Ginsenoside Analysis And Micropropagation Of American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L.), Samuel G. Obae

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.), is an economically important medicinal plant native to eastern deciduous forests of North America. Like many other medicinal plants worldwide, P. quinquefolius is mainly collected from the wild. And because of its growing demand, abundance of wild populations is threatened with over harvesting. In West Virginia, P. quinquefolius is available both in cultivation and in the wild. Even though P. quinquefolius occurs in all 55 counties in West Virginia, patterns of its harvesting and cultivation vary across the state. As described in chapter 2, the genetic diversity and population structure of P. quinquefolius under two …

Musculoskeletal Injuries In Tactical Law Enforcement, Nathan T. Roberts Jan 2010

Musculoskeletal Injuries In Tactical Law Enforcement, Nathan T. Roberts

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Context. Tactical law enforcement combines special law enforcement tactics and elite level athletic movements. There is a lack of research surrounding the frequency and types of musculoskeletal injuries incurred by tactical law enforcement officers. It is postulated that the musculoskeletal injuries seen in the military and among elite level athletes are similar to those sustained by tactical officers. Objective. The primary purpose of this study is to determine how often tactical officers experience musculoskeletal injuries, what types are most common, and when they are occurring. The secondary purpose of this study is to determine how often tactical officers have access …

Small Engine Emissions Testing Laboratory Development And Emissions Sampling System Verification, Balaji B. Seward Jan 2010

Small Engine Emissions Testing Laboratory Development And Emissions Sampling System Verification, Balaji B. Seward

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With the recent scrutiny of engine emissions and a focus towards higher fuel efficiencies, there has been an increase in demand for small, efficient engines and small engine emissions testing. Small engines have proven to provide high efficiency performance for systems including refrigeration units, generators, compressors and numerous other off-road applications. In the past, the existing emissions testing facilities at West Virginia University's (WVU) Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions (CAFEE) have been focused towards the testing of heavy duty diesel engines.;In order to expand the emissions testing capabilities at CAFEE, a new small engine emissions testing laboratory was …

Industrial Heat Stress : Using Ice Slurry Ingestion As A Practical Approach To Reducing Heat Strain In Workers, Joseph E. Maté Jan 2010

Industrial Heat Stress : Using Ice Slurry Ingestion As A Practical Approach To Reducing Heat Strain In Workers, Joseph E. Maté

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Personnel working in industry can encounter hot and humid conditions where uncompensable heat loads are experienced; an inability to dissipate stored heat increases the risk of developing a heat illness. In order to minimise the incidence of heat illnesses, several heat stress reduction interventions have been developed which aim to allow for safe repeated bouts of exposure to high thermal heat loads. These vary from modification of the working environment, wearing of personal protective equipment designed to cool, heat stress indices and/or hydration regimens. Despite these interventions, personnel still experience heat stress related illnesses. Consequently, the overall aim of the …

The (Un)Written Heart In Brecht’S Baal And Journeys Of The God Of Happiness : Heart Matters In The Development Of A Playwright And His Ideas On Acting, Ralf G. Rauker Jan 2010

The (Un)Written Heart In Brecht’S Baal And Journeys Of The God Of Happiness : Heart Matters In The Development Of A Playwright And His Ideas On Acting, Ralf G. Rauker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In the 1918 and 1919 versions of his play Baal, Brecht had used
autobiographical material about a heart problem that he suffered from and
had recorded in his diaries since 1913. When he revised the 1919 version
and the play was first published in 1922, it seemed that this very personal
connection had disappeared. An observable shift in his work began to take
place, which led to his adopting an apparently unambiguous rationalist take
on theatre. However, his extremely critical, sometimes polemical position on
the intertwined subject of heart and emotions raises questions about the
motivations for the move towards …

INTRODUCTION: Open access publishing is becoming increasingly popular within the biomedical sciences. SciELO, the Scientific Electronic Library Online, is a digital library covering a selected collection of Brazilian scientific journals many of which provide open access to full-text articles. This library includes a number of dental journals some of which may include reports of clinical trials in English, Portuguese and/or Spanish. Thus, SciELO could play an important role as a source of evidence for dental healthcare interventions especially if it yields a sizeable number of high quality reports. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify reports of clinical trials …

Enhancing Intercultural Participation In Group Work – Towards A Working Model, Mel Joyner, Debby Cotton, Wai Mun Lim, R George

Peninsula Dental School

The study reported here aims to contribute to the existing body of research by observing three instances of multicultural group work within an academic setting and analysing interactions in terms of quantitative and qualitative aspects. Building on previous research findings – particularly those on the importance of pedagogic design - we sought to create a group work task which applied best practice recommendations from existing literature, and tested them in a controlled setting.Graduates are increasingly expected to work in multi-cultural contexts, therefore skills in intercultural interaction are crucial. The concept of internationalisation in higher education (HE) has shifted away from …

Role Of Extended Release Quetiapine In The Management Of Bipolar Disorders, Martha Sajatovic

Faculty Scholarship

Atypical antipsychotics have become a widely utilized component of the bipolar disorder treatment armamentarium, with approximately 45% of bipolar patients prescribed atypicals. Over the last decade all atypical drugs except for clozapine have received a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bipolar indication. In October 2008, the FDA approved quetiapine XR monotherapy for the treatment of acute depressive episodes of bipolar disorder and acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar I disorder based on two placebo-control trials. Quetiapine was also approved as adjunct therapy with lithium and divalproex for the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes as well as maintenance …

Cockroaches, Ryan S. Davis Jan 2010

Cockroaches, Ryan S. Davis

All Current Publications

Cockroaches are one of the most difficult structural pests to eradicate because of their ability to hide, rapid reproduction, and resistance to and avoidance of many commonly used insecticide sprays and baits. Using an integrated pest management (IPM) program can greatly increase the possibility of successful control. There are 4 cockroach species that commonly infest structures in Utah, each with a specific biology; identify invading cockroaches before you develop an IPM plan. Proper identification of any pest will allow you to understand its biology, and use it against itself!

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1898, Ernst Behrend arrived in America controlling approximately Z1,000,000 to build a paper mill. He and his father, Moritz Behrend, had secured investments from a small pool of German entrepreneurs who owned other paper mills in Prussia. The Behrend family had been among the pioneers in producing sulphite paper made from wood pulp rather than cotton rag, and they wanted to transfer the technology to America. Starting Hammermill Paper Company in America proved to be more demanding than planning had foretold. The sulphite process was successful, but the Behrends faced numerous challenges in their new business venture. Ernst Behrend, …

Seekers Anonymous: On Being A Seeker In The Twenty-First Century, Richard J. Leider, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The term servant-leadership was first coined in a 1970 essay by Robert K. Greenleaf, entitled The Servant Leader. Greenleaf defined servantleadership this way: "The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test is: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit, or at least not be further deprived?" While Greenleaf is best …

Justice And Forgiveness In The Family, R. John Jan 2010

Justice And Forgiveness In The Family, R. John

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The presence of a committed alcoholic/addict in the midst of a family has a profound effect on the family's structure and dynamic. Over time in such an environment, a web of frustration, disappointment, shattered hope, bitter resentment, unmet expectations, and mutually debilitating codependency is woven, enmeshing equally the alcoholic and his loved ones. This pattern is nearly universal, and yet many if not most alcoholics proceed for years thinking that it does not apply to them. I was no different. For fifteen years, from my first drink at age fifteen until my last at age thirty, my progressive alcoholism was …

Representing The Rhinoceros: The Royal Society Between Art And Science In The Eighteenth Century, Craig A. Hanson

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Discrepancies between the empirical evidence of single-horned rhinoceroses witnessed by Europeans and references from antiquity regarding double-horned rhinos puzzled members of the Royal Society for decades, particularly the circle of physicians around Drs Richard Mead and Hans Sloane. Three articles published in the Philosophical Transactions proposing solutions to the two-horned dilemma and the kinds of evidence onwhich they depended raised crucial issues for the Royal Society during the period - antiquarian concerns tied to philology, numismatics, textual emendation and collecting as well as the conceptual overlap between medical theory and the knowledge of the ancient world generally. © 2010 British …

Superficial Dsg2 Expression Limits Epidermal Blister Formation Mediated By Pemphigus Foliaceus Antibodies And Exfoliative Toxins., D Brennan, Ying Hu, Walid Medhat, A Dowling, M G Mahoney

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Cell-cell adhesion mediated by desmosomes is crucial for maintaining proper epidermal structure and function, as evidenced by several severe and potentially fatal skin disorders involving impairment of desmosomal proteins. Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) are subcorneal blistering diseases resulting from loss of function of the desmosomal cadherin, desmoglein 1 (Dsg1). To further study the pathomechanism of these diseases and to assess the adhesive properties of Dsg2, we employed a recently established transgenic (Tg) mouse model expressing Dsg2 in the superficial epidermis. Neonatal Tg and wild type (WT) mice were injected with purified ETA or PF Ig. …

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Not so long ago, one of us was consulted by a middle-aged woman with rosacea. For many years, she had had periodic flares of red papules and pustules on her nose and the adjoining areas. The confluent telangiectasia on her cheeks gave a permanent appearance of well-applied rouge. She had seen several dermatologists and had received a wide variety of medications, all of which seemed appropriate except to her as would be subsequently revealed. She wanted a new approach, but there were limitations placed upon her request: no pills or capsules; nothing odiferous; no agent that might bleach clothing; and …

A Social And Political History Of The National Radio Astronomy Observatory At Green Bank, Wv, Lenora G. Kenwolf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the role of the people of West Virginia in bringing the NRAO to Green Bank, West Virginia. It explores the impact of the space race, big science and the Cold War on a small rural community nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains during the 1950s. There has been very little scholarship done on how local residents and state politicians helped to shape big science. The thesis opens with a brief history of early radio astronomy starting with the work of Karl Jansky and Grote Reber. It discusses the influence of HAM radio on radio astronomy. …

The ongoing Great Recession has triggered numerous proposals to improve the regulation of financial markets and, most importantly, the regulation of organizations such as credit rating agencies, underwriters, hedge funds, and banks, whose behavior is believed to have caused the credit crisis that spawned the economic collapse. Not surprisingly, some of the reform efforts seek to strengthen the use of private litigation. Private suits have long been championed as a necessary mechanism not only to compensate investors for harms they suffer from financial frauds but also to enhance deterrence of wrongdoing. However, in recent years there has been a chorus …
