Accidental Leaders No More: Challenges Facing Healthcare Leaders Of Today And Tomorrow, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Singapore’s ageing population means healthcare costs are going up at faster than ever. The heavier workload and growing business opportunities within this essential industry also means that on-going tensions between the public and private sectors are unlikely to go away anytime soon. Yet, at the same time, the industry faces multi-dimensional challenges, like rapidly-changing technology and fierce competition for talent. How can healthcare organisations prepare themselves for the challenges ahead? For a start, they could use a pipeline of formally-trained leaders.
Re-Architecting An Information/Technology Literacy Course: Breaking New Ground And Laying Foundational Pedagogies, Mardi Chalmers
Re-Architecting An Information/Technology Literacy Course: Breaking New Ground And Laying Foundational Pedagogies, Mardi Chalmers
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008
The session will be separated into two sections: breaking new ground and foundational pedagogies for new course architecture. The presenter will first describe several models of course redesign and apply them specifically to redesigning an info/tech literacy course. These models go from partial to complete re-architecting, so participants would be able to fit their current information literacy course(s) into one of these models, making this session very valuable to any librarian wishing to improve information literacy (IL) instruction at their institution.
The second section will focus on pedagogies used for over a decade in the sciences, humanities and education for …

Feeding Corn Milling Co-Products To Feedlot Cattle, 3rd Edition, Galen E. Erickson, Crystal D. Buckner, Terry J. Klopfenstein
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Introduction
Two primary types of milling processes currently exist, resulting in quite different feed products. These processing plants produce and market a variety of feed products, but in general, the dry milling process produces distillers grains plus solubles (DGS), and the wet milling process produces corn gluten feed (CGF). These feeds can be marketed as wet feeds, or they can be dried and marketed as either dry corn gluten feed (DCGF) or dry distillers grains (DDG) with or without solubles.
For the purposes of this report, wet corn gluten feed (WCGF), wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS), DCGF and dried …

A secondary purpose was to compare the steps/d of minority children and youth to their Caucasian grade-level counterparts. Methods: Participants were 547 minority youth grades 5 to 8 from 4 urban schools. Participants wore sealed pedometers for 6 consecutive week/school days. Three hundred and ten participants responded to a questionnaire concerning their mode of transportation to and from school. Results: Statistical analyses indicated a main effect for gender (F(3,546) …
Passion, Protest, Or Just Plain Incivility?: Responding To Bad Behaviors In Public Meetings, Suzanne Mccorkle
Passion, Protest, Or Just Plain Incivility?: Responding To Bad Behaviors In Public Meetings, Suzanne Mccorkle
Research and Reports
Bad behavior is not new, but the prevalence of incivility seems a rising tide in the public arena. Passionate outbursts at a public input meeting and planned protest to disrupt meetings are captured with increasing frequency on today’s omnipresent electronic media. The negative invective allowed/encouraged during political campaigns seems to carry over to public input meetings and other places intended for the measured, deliberative processes of governance. In the public forum, sometimes it is easy to discern the planned protest from the passionate outburst; sometimes it is not. When a theater group pretending to be audience members broke into song …

Affirmative Action In Malaysia And South Africa: Policies And Outcomes In Education And Employment, H.A. Lee
Affirmative Action In Malaysia And South Africa: Policies And Outcomes In Education And Employment, H.A. Lee
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
This paper surveys and evaluates affirmative action policies and outcomes in Malaysia and South Africa, two countries with majority-favouring regimes. I outline the historical contingencies and political economy of policy formulation, noting key similarities and differences. Broadly, Malaysia's continuity ofBumiputera political dominance and relatively discretionary policy framework contrasts with South Africa's post-Apartheid transition to democratic majority rule and institutionalization of a more statutory framework. This paper then presents empirical evidence of the progress of affirmative action, focusing on representation of disadvantaged groups in tertiary education and upper-level employment. We consider Malaysia and South Africa separately, followed by analysis of our …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
This paper presents experimental results carried out to evaluate fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature and the emissions characteristics of jatropha-palm diesel blends in an internal combustion engine. A total of two fuel samples such as (i) 100% diesel fuel (D100) and (ii) 5% jatropha and 5% palm diesel (methyl ester of palm oil) with 90% diesel fuel (J5P5) were used. The D100 was used for comparison purposes. The details physicochemical properties of J5P5 has been measured and compared with D100 fuel. The emission parameters measured are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbon (HC), smoke and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). …

Progress In Precursor Skills And Front Crawl Swimming In Children With And Without Developmental Coordination Disorder, Matt Donaldson, Brian Blanksby, N. Heard
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This study investigated swimming performance and the influence of task complexity among children with and without Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Two groups of children were matched by age - 11 controls without DCD and 11 children with DCD. Repeated measures ANOVA showed that children with DCD performed significantly lower level than age-matched controls for all the water competency tasks and front crawl. Both groups improved significantly in water competency and front crawl over 10 lessons. Significant interactions suggested that children with DCD showed different rates of change during the acquisition of the glide and front crawl. Both groups regressed with …

Tips For New Horse Owners, Kathleen P. Anderson, Cushman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Pleasure horses for personal and recreational use representthe largest category of horse ownership in the United States, with about 2 million people owning such horses. Whether a person already owns a horse or is considering the initial purchase of a horse, this NebGuide will help answer many questions asked by new horse owners.
Horses can be kept at a person’s own place or boarded at a commercial stable. Keeping a horse on a person’s acreage provides more management control, saves time and expenses, and can reduce the risk of injuries and disease. Most importantly, it allows fuller enjoyment and greater …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
A series of investigations were conducted in order to evaluate the effect of MOS supplementation in finfish aquaculture. Fish with great potential in aquaculture industry were tested with regards to effect of dietary MOS supplementation on intestinal histology and microbiology as well as overall animal health and production. Two levels of MOS supplementation were applied 0.2% and 0.4%. Experimental fish were Atlantic salmon (Salmon salar), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchys mykiss), sole (Solea senegalensis) and gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). The results from the sea bream studies revealed that MOS supplementation may have a beneficial effect on growth performance of fish greater …

Act 2: Tastes In Common (1938-2002), James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
Act 2 of "A Privileged Past" explores the history of one family – the author’s family of origin – from its inception in 1938 until its dissolution in 2002. Tracing the Allens in Silver Spring, Maryland – a wealthy suburb of Washington, DC – this chapter highlights the family’s steady relative decline in socio-economic status in the wake of the New Deal that, at least until 1980, promoted the development of a middle class much more modest than what the Allens represented. The dominant metaphor in this account is that of taste and the shared rituals of families and friends …

Act 5: Cultural Sound(Ing)S (1984-Present), James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
Here in Act 5 of "A Privileged Past," the author turns to his and his wife’s life overseas in France and Germany. Their dual national identities as Americans living abroad for extended periods of time underscore the dramatic changes in social conditions in Europe since 1945 as it regained its place in world affairs after World War II. Because so much of life in Europe is dependent upon second-language acquisition, the primary literary figure in this chapter is sound and its many cultural resonances.
Act 6: A Sixth Sense?, James Smith Allen
Act 6: A Sixth Sense?, James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
The last act of "A Privileged Past" is devoted to the author’s life and work in higher education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and its ecological niche on the northern-most edge of the Shawnee National Forest. The faculty member’s teaching, research, and service are described and set within the context of an evolving academic community and its relationship to a larger environment. Given the limitations of empirical knowledge, the chapter’s chief metaphor is a sixth sense of what is right and of use to others, students especially, who are intent upon a better life for themselves.

Background: Globally, sub-Saharan Africa bears the greatest burden of disease. Strengthened research capacity to understand the social determinants of health among different African populations is key to addressing the drivers of poor health and developing interventions to improve health outcomes and health systems in the region. Yet, the continent clearly lacks centers of research excellence that can generate a strong evidence base to address the region’s socio-economic and health problems. Objective and program overview: We describe the recently launched Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), which brings together a network of nine academic and four research institutions from …
