Sensation Seeking And A Real World Stressor: Endocrine And Physiological Effects, Amber Allison Dec 2010

Sensation Seeking And A Real World Stressor: Endocrine And Physiological Effects, Amber Allison

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We attempted to identify the psychobiological mechanisms that mediate the process by which the sensation seeking trait culminates in behavior. We used the Sensation Seeking Scales to assess the SS trait in individuals who expressed a desire to skydive. We obtained measures of autonomic (heart rate) and endocrine (salivary cortisol) activity before, during and after skydiving. To distinguish the contribution of novelty, we compared novices (N=29) to experienced jumpers (N=15). All jumpers exhibited HPA-axis activation; novices exhibited a prolonged response and more extreme peak in cortisol compared to experienced jumpers, suggesting that novelty contributes to an intense pattern of stress …

Assessing The Psychosocial Needs Of Individuals Diagnosed With Cancer, By Age And Sex On Interest In Support Group Attendance, Mary Rodrigue Dec 2010

Assessing The Psychosocial Needs Of Individuals Diagnosed With Cancer, By Age And Sex On Interest In Support Group Attendance, Mary Rodrigue

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There are several psychosocial factors that can affect an individual diagnosed with cancer (Holland, 2003), and directly addressing these issues with patients is important for their overall care and quality of life (Holland, 1998). The practice of psycho-oncology has been designed to assess these psychosocial issues with patients and their caregivers by means of outlets such as support groups to facilitate a wellness model of care (Myers & Sweeney, 2008). Using the demographics of age and sex, I plan to analyze and identify what psychosocial needs are significant to individuals diagnosed with cancer, and compare the sex and age of …

Retention And Graduation Rates As Performance Indicators In 2-Year And 4-Year Postsecondary Institutions, Lisa Watson Dec 2010

Retention And Graduation Rates As Performance Indicators In 2-Year And 4-Year Postsecondary Institutions, Lisa Watson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is on performance indicators – specifically, retention and graduation indicators - that impact allocation of the ever-dwindling public sources of money. Decreasing revenue trends make understanding the performance indicators that are often used to fund postsecondary institutions very important. There is a significant amount of literature on funding, types of funding, and performance indicators used in funding; however, there is very little literature on quantitative differences on standard performance indicators in 2-year and 4- year postsecondary institutions. The purpose of this study is to look at retention and graduation rates for part-time and full-time students …

The Effects Of Using Clinical Support Tools To Prevent Treatment Failure, Tiffany K. Washington Dec 2010

The Effects Of Using Clinical Support Tools To Prevent Treatment Failure, Tiffany K. Washington

Theses and Dissertations

To date, outcome research suggests that providing clinicians with patient progress feedback and problem-solving tools is effective in improving therapeutic outcome for clients who are predicted to have a negative treatment outcome. To expand upon this body of research, the current study examined the efficacy of using these problem-solving tools (Clinical Support Tools; CST) to reduce the risk of treatment failure and enhance positive outcome with 118 clients who were not identified as at -risk for a negative outcome. Results of this study indicated that the intervention failed to lower the rate of becoming an at-risk case or to enhance …

Toward A Database Of Geometric Interrelationships Of Protein Secondary Structure Elements For De Novo Protein Design, Prediction And Analysis, Augustine Ada Orgah Dec 2010

Toward A Database Of Geometric Interrelationships Of Protein Secondary Structure Elements For De Novo Protein Design, Prediction And Analysis, Augustine Ada Orgah

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Computational methods of analyzing, simulating, and modeling proteins are essential towards understanding protein structure and its interactions. Computational methods are easier as not all protein structures can be determined experimentally due to the inherent difficultly of working with some proteins. In order to predict, design, analyze, simulate or model a protein, data from experimentally determined proteins such as those located in the repository of the Protein Data Bank (PDB) are essential. The assumption here is that we can use pieces of known proteins to piece together a "new" protein hence, de novo protein design. The analysis of the geometric relationships …

God Of Our Fathers: Catholic Chaplains In The Confederate Armies, Gary W. Mccall

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Civil War contained many examples of courage and commitment to duty that were inspired by religion. In recent years much has been written on this subject of religion and the Civil War but virtually all of it is written about Protestant chaplains and this has created a gap in the record. This thesis covers the role played by Catholic chaplains in Confederate army regiments from Louisiana. It explores their life, ministry, military role, and impact on the regiments. To cover this in depth the Catholic chaplains selected we those who left published records.

Multivariate Cluster Analysis Of The Mmpi-2 And Mmpi-2-Rf Scales In Spine Pain Patients With Financial Compensation: Characterization And Validation Of Chronic Pain Subgroups, Luis Aguerrevere

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Different psychosocial factors influence the experience and adaptation to pain. Previous cluster analytic studies using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2nd edition described psychologically different subgroups of pain patients that had been shown valuable in determining outcome. However, these studies had limited applicability to medico-legal pain populations because they did not use newly developed scales or describe important medico-legal factors that have large effects on symptom endorsement. Using three methods of clustering, the current investigation explored the subgroups that resulted when using all the MMPI-2 and the newly developed MMPI-2-RF (Restructured Form) scales on a large and well-described population of medico-legal …

The Relationship Between Professional Identity And Collective Self- Esteem In School Counselors, Susan Foster Dec 2010

The Relationship Between Professional Identity And Collective Self- Esteem In School Counselors, Susan Foster

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

All bona fide professions have affiliated professional organizations, ethical standards or a code of ethics, and an accrediting and sanctioning body that deals with preparation, credentialing, and licensure, and pride in one's profession (Gale & Austin, 2003; Remley & Herlihy, 2010). As school counseling continues to evolve, school counselors have struggled to define and maintain their role. This may be due, in part, to the social desirability an individual has to belong to dominant group in the school setting (Tajfel, 1986). School counselors may draw esteem from their professional membership. This concept, called collective self-esteem, denotes those aspects of identity …

"I Wonder When We'll Be In Civilization Again": Women, Alaska And The 1910 Seattle To Ophir Travel Letter Of Cinthia "Addie" Rieck, Lillian Anderson Misel Dec 2010

"I Wonder When We'll Be In Civilization Again": Women, Alaska And The 1910 Seattle To Ophir Travel Letter Of Cinthia "Addie" Rieck, Lillian Anderson Misel

Arctic and Northern Studies

Mainstream Alaskan history has largely ignored women's role in the development of the state during the early 20th century. Although mainly a male endeavor, the multiple Alaskan gold stampedes from 1899 to 1914 brought a migration of women, and they played a role in the development of the territory. The current literature of women in the north focuses primarily on the Canadian Klondike stampede of 1897-98 which saw women traveling to the gold fields for a variety of reasons, such as to support their husbands in their ventures, seek their own business opportunities, or just seek adventure. The same reasons …

Costs Of Treating Depression With Individual Versus Family Therapy, Sareta Dobbs Head Dec 2010

Costs Of Treating Depression With Individual Versus Family Therapy, Sareta Dobbs Head

Theses and Dissertations

Marital discord contributes to the development and continuation of depression and to the recurrence of depressive episodes for those in troubled relationships. Early research suggests that family therapy may reduce the severity and frequency of depressive episodes through modification of family interactional patterns. This would result in a reduction in the cost of treating depression. This study summarizes the literature linking family dynamics with depression. Then, using a sample taken from a large health maintenance organization, data was statistically analyzed to measure the effectiveness of both individual and family therapy as delivered by different types of mental health professionals. Results indicated …
