Improving The Enabling Environment For Electronic Communications And Ict Development In Kosova : [Presentation Given On November 17, 2010], Agim Kukaj

Theses

This Capstone Project addresses an important problem hampering growth and development in the Kosova electronic communications sector, namely that its legislative enabling environment is seriously out of phase with current communications technology convergence, modern competition-based regulatory practices, and European Union (EU) information society policies. This is because the existing Law on Telecommunications is eight years old and urgently requires updating, and at the urging of the European Commission (EC), has led Government to commit to completing a new Electronic Communications Law based on EU legislation by end 2010. Specifically, of the many issues to be addressed by a new legislative …

Displaying Conflict: The Visitor's Experience At The Kolmakovskii Blockhouse, Salena Kaye Bias

Arctic and Northern Studies

"A blockhouse sits outside of the University of Alaska Museum of the North in Fairbanks, Alaska. Built in 1841 by the Russian-American Company, the structure has been removed from its original location in the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, reconstructed, and presented to the public as a part of the museum's collection. However, little information is currently provided about the blockhouse or its history. While the current display lacks sufficient context, the Ethnology & History Department of the museum has received grant funds to improve the preservation and presentation of the Kolmakovskii Blockhouse. This thesis will provide a history of Russian advancement …

Scientists And Journalists: Framing The Interaction, Marie E. Gilbert Dec 2010

Scientists And Journalists: Framing The Interaction, Marie E. Gilbert

Communication

"Humans have sent fellow beings into space, created cyberspace, determined the likely origins of our universe, and identified the genetic origins of ourselves. As members of a variety of broader, general publics, each of us likely came to know about these scientific outcomes as the result of a journalist talking to a scientist, followed by the journalists' work reaching us through television, radio, a print medium, or the Web. Few members of the public are reported to understand much about science and scientists are portrayed as unable to communicate to the everyday person. The media, as the primary source of …

Constructed Identities: Lived Experience And The Struggle To Integrate The Sexual And Religious Identities Among Lesbians, Gays, And Bisexuals, Alan C. Fredericksen Dec 2010

Constructed Identities: Lived Experience And The Struggle To Integrate The Sexual And Religious Identities Among Lesbians, Gays, And Bisexuals, Alan C. Fredericksen

Communication

"Most, if not all, Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals struggle at one point of their lives to reconcile their sexual and religious identities. This struggle can be either helped or hindered within the interpersonal communicative acts that lesbians, gays, and bisexuals encounter on a daily basis throughout their lives. This study uses narrative interviews to examine the impact and affect that various interpersonal communicative acts have had on five people, some of whom identified as lesbian, gay, and bisexual. Though there is much research available regarding the struggle of this population to integrate these two identities, none was available to this …

Numerical Modeling For In-Stream Hydrokinetic Resources Assessment, Paul Xavier Duvoy Dec 2010

Numerical Modeling For In-Stream Hydrokinetic Resources Assessment, Paul Xavier Duvoy

Engineering

"During recent years the viability of extracting river energy using hydrokinetic devices became a topic that brought in national attention due to higher fuel costs, and an increased demand of electric energy. A tool for hydrokinetic energy potential assessment in rivers, HYDROKAL, which stands for Hydrokinetic Calculator, was developed. This tool was generated in Fortran 90 programming language as an external module for the CCHE2D, an existing two-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model developed by researchers at the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering, University of Mississippi. Velocity outputs generated by the CCHE2D model are used by HYDROKAL to estimate instantaneous …

The FREEDM microgrid is a smart grid solution with Distributed Grid Intelligence (DGI) to efficiently manage the power distribution and storage of renewable energy. within the FREEDM system, DGI applies distributed control method in a unique way to achieve feasible load balancing in microgrid by migrating power between renewable energy generation and storage at each node. This paper presents the key aspects in implementing such a scheme and outlines the preliminary results obtained by integrating the proposed methodology. the results demonstrate the potential benefits of adopting DGI control on a microgrid.

Nunivak Island Subsistence Cod, Red Salmon And Grayling Fisheries – Past And Present, Robert M. Drozda Dec 2010

Nunivak Island Subsistence Cod, Red Salmon And Grayling Fisheries – Past And Present, Robert M. Drozda

Faculty and Staff

Nunivak Islanders (Nuniwarmiut) report Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus; atgiiyar) was a significant and consistent subsistence resource during the first half of the 20th century. Following an absence of at least 30 years, Pacific cod returned to Nunivak waters in the mid-1980s and were once again incorporated into the Nuniwarmiut subsistence round. This report presents an overview of traditional and contemporary Pacific cod fishing primarily collected as “traditional knowledge” from Nunivak elders, as well as from literature and archival sources. The report also summarizes the current state of the Nunivak Pacific cod fishery with results of subsistence fish surveys and documentation …

Ontogenetic Considerations In The Trophic Level Of Commercial Groundfish Species In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jennifer Marie Marsh Dec 2010

Ontogenetic Considerations In The Trophic Level Of Commercial Groundfish Species In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jennifer Marie Marsh

Fisheries

"Trends in trophic level (TL) estimates of commercial fishery catches are used as ecosystem-based indicators for sustainability, but these estimates often do not incorporate species-specific interannual and ontogenetic feeding patterns. This study provides a finer resolution of ontogenetic and temporal variations in the trophic position of four groundfish species in the central Gulf of Alaska (GOA), walleye pollock (Theragra chaleogramma), Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias), and Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis), using stable isotope analysis to assess TL and diet source. Samples were collected from the northeastern side of Kodiak Island, Alaska, from 2000-2004. Several Analysis of Covariance …

H-Ns Binding And Repression Of The Ctx Promoter In Vibrio Cholerae, Emily A. Stonehouse, Robin R. Hulbert, Melinda B. Nye, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Dec 2010

H-Ns Binding And Repression Of The Ctx Promoter In Vibrio Cholerae, Emily A. Stonehouse, Robin R. Hulbert, Melinda B. Nye, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Expression of the ctx and tcp genes, which encode cholera toxin and the toxin coregulated pilus, the Vibrio cholerae O1 virulence determinants having the largest contribution to cholera disease, is repressed by the nucleoid-associated protein H-NS and activated by the AraC-like transcriptional regulator ToxT. To elucidate the molecular mechanism by which H-NS controls transcription of the ctxAB operon, H-NS repression and binding were characterized by using a promoter truncation series, gel mobility shift assays, and DNase I footprinting. Promoter regions found to be important for H-NS repression correlated with in vitro binding. Four main H-NS binding regions are present at …

Connecting Religion And Work: Patterns And Influences Of Work-Faith Integration, Monty Lynn, Michael J. Naughton, Steve Vanderveen Dec 2010

Connecting Religion And Work: Patterns And Influences Of Work-Faith Integration, Monty Lynn, Michael J. Naughton, Steve Vanderveen

Management Sciences

Religiosity can significantly impact human behavior yet little is known about how religious belief and practice integrate with work. Using the Faith at Work Scale, we surveyed Christian workers in the United States (n = 374) and found that work-faith integration was positively associated with faith maturity, church attendance, age and denominational strictness, and negatively associated with organizational size. Denominational groups varied in their degree of integration but displayed similar patterns across dimensions of integration.Work-faith integration was manifest most strongly in integration related to the self, and somewhat less so in areas related to others and in transcendent aspects of …

A Web Service For Protein Refinement And Refinement Of Membrane Proteins, Kapil Pothakanoori Dec 2010

A Web Service For Protein Refinement And Refinement Of Membrane Proteins, Kapil Pothakanoori

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The structures obtained from homology modeling methods are of intermediate resolution 1-3Ã… from true structure. Energy minimization methods allow us to refine the proteins and obtain native like structures. Previous work shows that some of these methods performed well on soluble proteins. So we extended this work on membrane proteins. Prediction of membrane protein structures is a particularly important, since they are important biological drug targets, and since their number is vanishingly small, as a result of the inherent difficulties in working with these molecules experimentally. Hence there is a pressing need for alternative computational protein structure prediction methods. This …

Understanding Bullying Participant Roles: Stability Across School Years And Personality And Behavioral Correlates, Ann Crapanzano Dec 2010

Understanding Bullying Participant Roles: Stability Across School Years And Personality And Behavioral Correlates, Ann Crapanzano

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the factorial validity, stability, and social, behavioral and emotional correlates of several different roles that students can play in the context of bullying. Data were collected from students at two time points across two school years, April and May of 2006 (n=284) and again in November and December of 2006 (n=185). A confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for the validity of 4 participant roles (i.e. bully, reinforcer, assistant, and defender). However, further analysis revealed that there was a strong degree of intercorrelation between the three bully factors (i.e., bully, reinforcer, and assistant). Analyses found that participant roles …

The Making Of Audubon Park: Competing Ideologies For Public Space, Nels Abrams Dec 2010

The Making Of Audubon Park: Competing Ideologies For Public Space, Nels Abrams

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of Progressivism at the beginning of the twentieth century influenced many aspects of American society. One of those aspects was urban parks. In the latter half of the nineteenth century Frederick Law Olmsted led a nationwide implementation of "Victorian" parks. These parks featured broad expanses of turf, waterways, and trees. Olmsted and the other Victorian park leaders designed the parks to cultivate Victorian values of self-restraint and independence among the citizenry. With the rise of Progressivism the ideals of the middle class changed. Led by Theodore Roosevelt, millions of Americans embraced the "strenuous life" and its emphasis on …

Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin Dec 2010

Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Tony Tanner's book City of Words analyzes American literature from 1950-1970; in the chapter entitled "Everything Running Down" the theme of entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, is explored and revealed to be a common motif within many works of American literature. Tanner's analysis does not specifically address the presence of entropy within the genre of the American road narrative; when considering his analysis presented in "Everything Running Down" with Kris Lackey's analysis of American road narratives presented in his book RoadFrames, the presence of entropy and how it is applied within the American road narrative becomes apparent. Although Jack …

Albert Baldwin Wood, The Screw Pump, And The Modernization Of New Orleans, Nicole Romagossa Dec 2010

Albert Baldwin Wood, The Screw Pump, And The Modernization Of New Orleans, Nicole Romagossa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Albert Baldwin Wood and his screw pumps modernized New Orleans by bringing flood-free streets and cleaner water to the city while providing the potential for growth by pumping swamp lands dry. While Wood was never part of the local Progressive movement, his work with the pumps fit with Progressive initiatives for modernization. At first, the screw pumps removed rain water from the streets. Then New Orleans expanded the drainage to include sewerage removal and water purification. The pumps successfully drained thousands of acres of land once considered uninhabitable swamp land. This additional land extended New Orleans city limits but also …

The Germans Of Roberts Cove, Louisiana: German Rice Cultivation And The Making Of A German-American Community In Acadia Parish, 1881-1917, Lydia Soileau

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Germans of Geilenkirchen-Hengesburg region of Germany were convinced by relative and friend, Father Peter Leonard Thevis, of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, to emigrate to the United States for a number of reasons: political, religious, and economic. After establishing themselves on land previously used for grazing cattle, the Germans soon discovered rice could easily be cultivated in large amounts. Along with their success as rice farmers in Roberts Cove, Louisiana, these Germans soon involved themselves in politics and engaged one another and the surrounding community in numerous court cases. These court cases, overlooked by previous historians, demonstrate that the …

Place Matters: An Evolutionary Approach To Annie Proulx's "The Half-Skinned Steer"And "Wamsutter Wolf", Erin Walker Dec 2010

Place Matters: An Evolutionary Approach To Annie Proulx's "The Half-Skinned Steer"And "Wamsutter Wolf", Erin Walker

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In Annie Proulx's interview with Charlie Rose, she states that her stories come "from place." Ecocriticism has been the predominant lens with which to understand Proulx's work; however, ecocriticism's nebulous tenets and theoretical deficiencies perpetuate sentimental pastoralism of geographical determinism. The shaping impact of Wyoming's environment in Proulx's work lends itself to an evolutionary perspective. Proulx's fiction, like evolutionary theory, examines humanity's unique, reciprocal relationship with nature. The evolutionary approach provides readers with a framework to understand the human relationship to our environment, a theme Proulx's work examines. This approach also augments current criticism that notes the importance of place …

The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee Dec 2010

The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Rhes (Ras homolog enriched in striatum) has been identified as a novel monomeric G-protein involved in dopaminergic and other signaling in the striatum. Given the many effects of opioids that involve striatal circuitry, genetically engineered mice that are incapable of making Rhes (rhes-/-) and their control littermates (rhes+/+) were subjected to behavioral tests to determine if any differences existed in opioid analgesia, tolerance, withdrawal, reward, and locomotion. Rhes-/- mice showed an increased opioid mediated analgesia, along with an absence of tolerance and decrease in withdrawal when compared with rhes+/+ littermates. However, no significant changes were seen in opioid induced locomotor …

Estuarine Dynamics As A Function Of Barrier Island Transgression And Wetland Loss: Understanding The Transport And Exchange Processes, Jennifer Schindler Dec 2010

Estuarine Dynamics As A Function Of Barrier Island Transgression And Wetland Loss: Understanding The Transport And Exchange Processes, Jennifer Schindler

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Northern Gulf of Mexico and coastal Louisiana are experiencing accelerated relative sea level rise rates; therefore, the region is ideal for modeling the global affects of sea level rise (SLR) on estuarine dynamics in a transgressive barrier island setting. The field methods and numerical modeling in this study show that as barrier islands are converted to inner shoals, tidal exchange increases between the estuary and coastal ocean. If marshes are unable to accrete at a pace comparable to SLR, wetlands will deteriorate and the tidal exchange and tidal prism will further increase. Secondary to hurricanes, winter storms are a …

The Petrochemical Industrial Complex Of The St. Charles Parish Industrial Corridor And Its Influence On Urbanization Patterns, Darin Acosta Dec 2010

The Petrochemical Industrial Complex Of The St. Charles Parish Industrial Corridor And Its Influence On Urbanization Patterns, Darin Acosta

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the impact that the petrochemical industry has had on the built environment of Norco, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. Previous scholars have suggested that heavy industry in Norco consumes a majority of the Mississippi River's natural levee, which is the most elevated and flood resistant land in the town. In order to test these observations, the author of this thesis has collected parcel-level land use data in Norco to determine the flood hazard and topographical characteristics of these various land uses. Spatial calculations, run using Geographic Information System software, have determined that heavy industrial land uses in Norco …

Rethinking Counseling For College: High School Counselors' Perceptions Of Community And Technical Colleges, Desiree Huggins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

While approximately 62% of high school graduates enroll in college, almost half of these students do not return for their second year in school. This demonstratable gap in college interest and reaching actual goals speaks to a need for information on how to facilitate the precollege guidance process to achieve more successful high school graduate and postsecondary institution matches. Much information is available in regard to the college choice process of high school students considering four year colleges and universities; scant information is known about how students discover information about the complete range of postsecondary educational opportunities. In particular, the …

An Examination Of Faculty Satisfaction At Two-Year Higher Education Institutions, Nancy Kinchen Dec 2010

An Examination Of Faculty Satisfaction At Two-Year Higher Education Institutions, Nancy Kinchen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Part-time faculty members represent the majority of faculty at public two-year postsecondary institutions. Utilizing part-time faculty enables two-year institutions to control their instructional costs and maintain scheduling flexibility. However, part-time faculty are diverse in regards to their employment preference, some prefer part-time employment while others would prefer a full-time position. Since retaining and attracting qualified and experienced part-time faculty members is essential, it is imperative that their satisfaction be understood. This study uses the 2004 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF: 04) to study faculty satisfaction. Faculty was disaggregated according to employment preference into full-time, involuntary part-time, and voluntary part-time …

Resilience Characteristics Of Master's-Level Counseling Students, J. Raul Machuca Dec 2010

Resilience Characteristics Of Master's-Level Counseling Students, J. Raul Machuca

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Resilience characteristics typically have been studied among children and adolescents. A new line of research on resilience is focused on exploring the resilience characteristics of adults exposed to short and long-term adversity. In the present study, 585 master's-level counseling students responded to the Resilience Scale (Wagnild & Young, 1993). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between counseling students' level of resilience and specific background variables (age, gender, marital status, ethnicity, education, income, employment, living situation, sexual orientation, and country of origin), counselor-education program variables (primary field of study, number of credits taken, academic status, professional affiliations, …
