Agenda: 2010 World Energy Justice Conference: Emerging Solutions For The Energy Poor: Technological, Entrepreneurial And Institutional Challenges, University Of Colorado Boulder. Center For Energy & Environmental Security, Colorado Journal Of International Environmental Law And Policy

2010 World Energy Justice Conference (November 5)

This conference is a sequel to the 2009 World Energy Justice Conference (WEJC 2009) which began examining ways of mainstreaming safe, clean, and efficient energy for the world's Energy Poor (EP). The EP number two and a half billion people living on less than $1-2 a day who have no access to modern energy services. WEJC 2010 more fully develops these themes. WEJC 2010 will explore how the next round of global warming meetings in Cancun could design new flexibility mechanisms that give credits, for example, for the reduction of black carbon by the adoption of cookstoves, and embrace small …

Exploring Evaluation In School Districts: School District Evaluators And Their Practice, Susan Hibbard Nov 2010

Exploring Evaluation In School Districts: School District Evaluators And Their Practice, Susan Hibbard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the evaluation practices of internal evaluators in public school districts in a large southern state. The individuals who conduct evaluations in school districts as internal evaluators were identified and background information was collected. The education and training in evaluation was investigated and the types of evaluations typically conducted by those individuals. Respondents (n = 134) revealed conducting evaluations was a secondary role and part of their main job responsibilities. The types of evaluations carried out and the way in which evaluation was practices were revealed. A descriptive framework of the individuals who conduct evaluations in school districts …

The Limits Of Control, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Regulation (Discussion), Joshua Hughes Nov 2010

The Limits Of Control, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Regulation (Discussion), Joshua Hughes

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

When we want to solve a problem, we talk about how we might manage or regulate—control it. Control is a a central concept in systems science, along with system, environment, utility, and information. With his information-theoretic Law of Requisite Variety, Ashby proved that to control a system we need as much variability in our regulator as we have in our system (“only variety can destroy variety”), something like a method of control for everything we want to control. For engineered systems, this appears to be the case (at least sometimes). But what about for social systems? Does a group of …

Aminopeptidases Do Not Directly Degrade Tau Protein, K. Martin Chow, Hanjun Guan, Louis B. Hersh Nov 2010

Aminopeptidases Do Not Directly Degrade Tau Protein, K. Martin Chow, Hanjun Guan, Louis B. Hersh

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Tau hyperphosphorylation and aggregation to form intracellular neurofibrillar tangles is prevalent in a number of tauopathies. Thus there is current interest in the mechanisms involved in Tau clearance. It was recently reported that Tau can be degraded by an aminopeptidase known as the puromycin sensitive aminopeptidase (PSA). Until now PSA has been reported to only cleave peptides, with the largest reported substrates having 30-50 amino acids. We have studied this unique PSA cleavage reaction using a number of different PSA preparations.

RESULTS: An N-terminally His tagged-PSA was expressed and purified from Sf9 insect cells. Although this PSA preparation cleaved …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2010-11-05, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 2001-2011

This is the Wooster Voice from November of 2010. The front page of this edition of the newspaper features a large article about an unprovoked assault on a female student. One of the members of Zeta Phi Gamma, a sorority on campus, was physically assaulted by what she believes to be a male student outside of a house party. The man asked her if she was a member of Zeta, and when she responded affirmatively, he punched her in the side of her face. President Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden made a visit to Ohio for midterm elections. A review …

Preparing The Next Generation Of After-School Educators: College Students’ Perceived Learning And Civic Engagement Associated With The Case Program, Briana Hinga, Joseph Mahoney Nov 2010

Preparing The Next Generation Of After-School Educators: College Students’ Perceived Learning And Civic Engagement Associated With The Case Program, Briana Hinga, Joseph Mahoney

Journal of Youth Development

First-year evaluation findings from the University of California, Irvine Department of Education’s Certificate in After-School Education (CASE) program are reported in this paper. The goal of CASE is to promote positive youth development in diverse learners through education and training of the after-school workforce. CASE blends instruction across five, 10-week long courses with 70+ hours of fieldwork in local after-school programs (ASPs). CASE course and fieldwork enrollment, perceived understanding of course material, multicultural education, and civic interests and engagement were measured through student surveys. Students in CASE courses report higher levels of perceived course understanding (p < .01), civic responsibility (p < .01) and empowerment (p < .05) than students in the non-CASE courses. Students enrolled in CASE courses requiring fieldwork report greater perceived course understanding (p < .01) and academic engagement (p < .01) than CASE students without fieldwork. The findings suggest the program is achieving several of its early goals.

Power And Sample Size For Three-Level Cluster Designs, Tina Cunningham Nov 2010

Power And Sample Size For Three-Level Cluster Designs, Tina Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past few decades, Cluster Randomized Trials (CRT) have become a design of choice in many research areas. One of the most critical issues in planning a CRT is to ensure that the study design is sensitive enough to capture the intervention effect. The assessment of power and sample size in such studies is often faced with many challenges due to several methodological difficulties. While studies on power and sample size for cluster designs with one and two levels are abundant, the evaluation of required sample size for three-level designs has been generally overlooked. First, the nesting effect introduces …

The Effects Of Glycation On The Binding Of Human Serum Albumin To Warfarin And L-Tryptophan, K.S. Joseph, David S. Hage Nov 2010

The Effects Of Glycation On The Binding Of Human Serum Albumin To Warfarin And L-Tryptophan, K.S. Joseph, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

Diabetes leads to elevated levels of glucose in blood which, in turn, can lead to the non-enzymatic glycation of serum proteins such as human serum albumin (HSA). It has been suggested that this increase in glycation can alter the ability of HSA to bind to drugs and other small solutes. This study used high-performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) to see if there is any significant change related to glycation in the binding of HSA to warfarin and L-tryptophan, which are often used as probe compounds for Sudlow sites I and II of HSA in drug binding studies with this protein. It …

Identification Of Psychological Patterns Using Neural Networks Approach, Panpan Hu Nov 2010

Identification Of Psychological Patterns Using Neural Networks Approach, Panpan Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Recent studies have shown that Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are suitable for recognizing patterns in the medical area. However, no study has been done to show whether or not they are also effective in the psychological area. In this study, ANNs are developed for six psychological cases related to sociobehavioral functioning. The cases are independent living skill deficits, disorder management deficits, occupational skill deficits, social skill deficits, dysregulation of anger/aggression, and substance abuse. Two models, one based on a backpropagation algorithm and the other based on a posteriori probability approach, were developed. The models were tested using data from 118 …
