Positive Youth Development In The Midst Of Coping With Parental Cancer: Implications For Youth Development Research And Practice, Kerri Ashurst, Jason Hans, Donna Smith, Kenneth Jones Nov 2010

Positive Youth Development In The Midst Of Coping With Parental Cancer: Implications For Youth Development Research And Practice, Kerri Ashurst, Jason Hans, Donna Smith, Kenneth Jones

Journal of Youth Development

Four implications for youth development research and practice resulted from a qualitative study on psychosocial developmental experiences of late adolescents coping with parental cancer during late adolescence. The study employed a developmental systems framework and grounded theory methods. Results suggest three primary psychosocial developmental influences, including multilevel influences (individual, familial, and extrafamilial risk and protective factors), coping strategies to maintain control, and responses to uncertainty and anticipatory grief. The particular combination of risk and protective factors present in participants’ lives resulted in positive outcomes; resilience was the central unifying concept that characterized the primary psychosocial developmental outcomes of each participant. …

Making Authenticity: Polk Miller And The Evolution Of American Popular Culture, Jacques Vest Nov 2010

Making Authenticity: Polk Miller And The Evolution Of American Popular Culture, Jacques Vest

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the life and musical career of James "Polk" Miller of Richmond Virginia, a Confederate veteran, and successful pharmacist. Miller claimed to offer the only authentic version of antebellum slave music, and was renowned as a convincing "negro delineator." In his focus on race, performance, and authenticity, Miller straddled a number of cultural currents linking him to his nineteenth century predecessors as well as the cultural milieu of the twentieth century. About the turn of the century, he added a black quartet to his act in order to more fully capture his conception of the "authentic" slave music …

Repair Of Mitomycin C Mono- And Interstrand Cross-Linked Dna Adducts By Uvrabc: A New Model, Mao-Wen Weng, Yi Zheng, Vijay P. Jasti, Elise Champeil, Maria Tomasz, Yinsheng Wang, Ashis K. Basu, Moon-Shong Tang

Publications and Research

Mitomycin C induces both MC-mono-dG and cross-linked dG-adducts in vivo. Interstrand cross-linked (ICL) dG-MC-dG-DNA adducts can prevent strand separation. In Escherichia coli cells, UvrABC repairs ICL lesions that cause DNA bending. The mechanisms and consequences of NER of ICL dG-MC-dG lesions that do not induce DNA bending remain unclear. Using DNA fragments containing a MC-mono-dG or an ICL dG-MC-dG adduct, we found (i) UvrABC incises only at the strand containing MC-mono-dG adducts; (ii) UvrABC makes three types of incisions on an ICL dG-MC-dG adduct: type 1, a single 5′ incision on 1 strand and a 3′ incision on the other; …

Weaving Evaluation Into The Fabric Of Youth Development, Ben Silliman, Gene Shutt Nov 2010

Weaving Evaluation Into The Fabric Of Youth Development, Ben Silliman, Gene Shutt

Journal of Youth Development

An Empowerment Evaluation process served to engage staff and campers and foster integration of authentic assessment methods into youth camp programming over a three-year period. Key elements to the process included program planning, staff training, timing and balance of action and reflection activities, data collection and management. Camp staff involved for 2-3 years reported improved focus and staff who served in the third year achieved mastery in communication, leadership, teaching, and management skills. A purposive sample of three different camp venues evaluated in Year 3 indicated that campers improved significantly in outdoor and life skills. Over 70% felt safe, supported, …

Technology Integration For Preservice Science Teacher Educators, Nina C. Stokes Nov 2010

Technology Integration For Preservice Science Teacher Educators, Nina C. Stokes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current state of technology integration in science teacher education programs is examined with a view to providing science teacher educators with practical information and diverse examples of technologies they can model in their own courses. Motivators and barriers to technology integration and use are discussed, and recommendations for choosing and evaluating science technologies made. A brief history of how computers, related communication technologies, and science teacher education reform "fit" together is provided. Multiple interpretations of what is meant by "technology" and associated terms (distance learning, online courses, Web-enhanced courses, simulations, authentic data sets etc.) are included to set the …

From A Constitutional Right To A Policy Of Exceptions: Abigail Alliance And The Future Of Access, Seema Shah, Patricia Zettler Nov 2010

From A Constitutional Right To A Policy Of Exceptions: Abigail Alliance And The Future Of Access, Seema Shah, Patricia Zettler

Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics

Although there has been considerable attention to the plight of terminally ill patients with highly sympathetic constitutional and contractual claims that they should be permitted access to unapproved drugs, courts have been appropriately reluctant to grant such claims. Congress and administrative agencies, not courts, have the requisite institutional competence to decide complex policy issues related to science and health care such as those involved in establishing an expanded access program. Congress and FDA should allow only limited access to unapproved therapies because there are significant concerns about the safety and efficacy of unapproved drugs, and many of the proposals to …

Albertsons Library: A Library For The 21st Century, Peggy S. Cooper, Amy M. Elliott

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

After five years of flat budgets, give backs, hold backs, and cut backs, the faculty, students and university administration love Albertsons Library more than ever before. Why? Because we’ve instituted a paradigm shift from building a collection of materials to building a collection of services. On-demand ordering of all faculty requests; ordering of ILL requests, immediate response to LIBQUAL survey results, focus groups, and user suggestions; creation of individual faculty library pages; and active and attentive library liaisons are a few of the services we have implemented to win the love of our users. Participants in this session will see …
