Being Virtuous And Prosperous: Sri’S Conflicting Goals, Benjamin J. Richardson, Wes Cragg Jan 2010

Being Virtuous And Prosperous: Sri’S Conflicting Goals, Benjamin J. Richardson, Wes Cragg

Articles & Book Chapters

Can SRI be a means to make investors both virtuous and prosperous? This paper argues that there can be significant tensions between these goals, and that SRI (and indeed all investment) should not allow the pursuit of maximizing investment returns to prevail over an ethical agenda of promoting social and economic justice and environmental protection. The discourse on SRI has changed dramatically in recent years to the point where its capacity to promote social emancipation, sustainable development and other ethical goals is in jeopardy. Historically, SRI was a boutique sector of the market dominated by religious-based investors who sought to …

Applying Graduate Student Perceptions Of Task Engagement To Enhance Learning Conditions, Johnette (Jay) Caulfield Jan 2010

Applying Graduate Student Perceptions Of Task Engagement To Enhance Learning Conditions, Johnette (Jay) Caulfield

College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications

Under what conditions are graduate students most likely to learn? How do we, as teachers, best create those conditions? The answer to these questions was the focus of this study whereby 91 masters’ students identified learning tasks that were most and least engaging. A model utilizing affective, behavioral and cognitive attributes was developed to measure graduate student engagement in learning tasks. Student survey data demonstrated a direct relationship between perceived value of the learning task, perceived effort put forth in achieving the learning task and perceived student engagement in learning. Multiple regression was used to predict engagement; two attributes, value …

Re-Imagining The Nature Of Development: Biodiversity Conservation And Pastoral Visions In The Northern Areas, Pakistan, Nosheen Ali Jan 2010

Re-Imagining The Nature Of Development: Biodiversity Conservation And Pastoral Visions In The Northern Areas, Pakistan, Nosheen Ali

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

Examines how, in the mountainous village of Shimshal, national parks and “community-based” conservation projects such as trophy hunting are deeply problematic, promoting exploitive ideologies of nature and development while delegitimizing the values and rights of pastoralists. The Shimshalis have creatively resisted the appropriations of their land by creating a Shimshal Nature Trust, implementing a model of ecological sovereignty instead of “community participation”—challenging the very logic of protected areas in international conservation.

Five Justifications For Investment Treaties: A Critical Discussion, Gus Van Harten Jan 2010

Five Justifications For Investment Treaties: A Critical Discussion, Gus Van Harten

Articles & Book Chapters

This article examines five common justifications for the investment treaty system in order to highlight aspects of the system that give cause for concern. First, it examines whether investment treaties are a means to encourage foreign direct investment and concludes that this expectation is contradicted by common provisions in investment treaties and is unsupported by the preponderance of empirical evidence. If this justification was a factor in the decisions of states to conclude investment treaties - or of international organizations to promote them - then these decisions appear to have been based on incomplete knowledge and analysis of the anticipated …

A Spatial Analysis Of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program And Economic Conditions In The Appalachian Region, Nyakundi M. Michieka, Archana Pradhan, Tesfa Gebremedhin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps low income people and families buy food they need for good health. The main objective of this study is to examine the effects of changes in the economic conditions and welfare on SNAP participation in the Appalachian region. The study employs county level data to capture variation in SNAP participation. Spatial econometric models are developed to examine the relationship among the economic and business cycle conditions, changes in welfare reforms, demographic and household attributes, institutional factors, and SNAP participation. The findings from this study could be helpful in improving welfare programs in this region.

A Dynamic Shift Share Analysis Of Economic Growth In West Virginia, Janaranjana Herath, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Blessing M. Maumbe

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

A regional economy consists of industries with a variety of economic potentials. A growth or decline in any of these sectors affects the overall growth of the economy. Analysis of economic growth by sector of a particular region helps policy makers, community leaders and researchers in better decision making and problem solving. This study attempts to analyze the employment growth pattern and policy implications in the economic development of West Virginia using a dynamic shift share analysis. The study uses employment data for 38 years from 1970 to 2007 for the empirical analysis. Results indicate that agriculture, mining and manufacturing …

What Causes Waste Flows? An Interregional Analysis Of Welsh Waste Shipments, Christa D. Jensen, Stuart Mcintyre Jan 2010

What Causes Waste Flows? An Interregional Analysis Of Welsh Waste Shipments, Christa D. Jensen, Stuart Mcintyre

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Much of the waste flow literature focuses on international waste trade and oftentimes solely on trade in hazardous wastes. However, data is often available for waste flows within national borders and these flows could yield just as much information on the relationships that exist between origins and destinations. In a world where waste creation, transport, and disposal is becoming a global problem, understanding and modeling these flows is becoming increasingly important. This paper uses a gravity model approach and data on commercial waste shipments between local authorities within Wales to examine the characteristics that are responsible for origin-destination waste flow …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Interactions Between Environmental Regulations And Economic Growth, Chali Nondo, Peter V. Schaeffer, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Jerald J. Fletcher Jan 2010

An Empirical Analysis Of The Interactions Between Environmental Regulations And Economic Growth, Chali Nondo, Peter V. Schaeffer, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Jerald J. Fletcher

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between environmental regulation and economic growth. A four-equation regional growth model is used to analyze the simultaneous relationships among changes in population, employment, per capita income, and environmental regulations for the 410 counties in Appalachia. Our results reveal that initial conditions for environmental regulation are negatively related to regional growth factors of change in population, per capita income, and total employment. From this, we infer that the diversion of resources from production and investment activities to pollution abatement is inadvertently transmitted to other sectors of the economy—thereby resulting in a …

Who Generates Hazardous Wastes? Attribution Of Producer And Consumer Responsibility Within The Us, Christa D. Jensen Jan 2010

Who Generates Hazardous Wastes? Attribution Of Producer And Consumer Responsibility Within The Us, Christa D. Jensen

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Amid changing attitudes about the environment and increasing sustainability concerns, many countries around the world aim to curb waste generation, especially the generation of hazardous wastes. Beginning in the late 1970’s and occurring increasingly since, governments and international bodies are passing legislation and treaties dealing with the reduction of hazardous waste generation and waste minimization in general. For future waste minimization policies to have an impact on hazardous waste generation, methods for determining where the ultimate responsibility for hazardous waste generation lies need to be explored. This paper examines hazardous waste generation in the United States at the industry level …

Energy Consumption And Economic Growth: Evidence From Comesa Countries, Chali Nondo Jan 2010

Energy Consumption And Economic Growth: Evidence From Comesa Countries, Chali Nondo

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This study applies panel data techniques to investigate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and GDP for a panel of 19 African countries (COMESA) based on annual data for the period 1980-2005. In the first step, we examine the degree of integration between GDP and energy consumption and find that the variables are integrated of order one. In the second step, we investigate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and GDP; our results provide strong evidence that GDP and energy consumption move together in the long-run. In the third step, we estimate the long-run relationship and test for causality using …

Obesity Prevention: A Review Of The Interactions And Interventions, And Some Policy Implications, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza Jan 2010

Obesity Prevention: A Review Of The Interactions And Interventions, And Some Policy Implications, Anura Amarasinghe, Gerard D'Souza

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions especially in the developed and, more recently, in the developing world where the problem is compounded by myriad socio-economic, demographic, built and natural environmental factors. This review examines the possible causes, consequences and policy implications using a multilevel, multispectral framework. The causes of obesity clearly are multifaceted and involve numerous interactions. Together with economic incentives, allocation of physical and financial resources to community intervention strategies through educational programs as well as better land use planning would be helpful in promoting healthier and sustainable communities. Towards this goal, we proposed a dynamic and integrated Individual, Social, …

Auto Policy Conflicts Of Law In Montana, Greg Munro Jan 2010

Auto Policy Conflicts Of Law In Montana, Greg Munro

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article reviews the conflicts of law cases in Montana in chronological order. The article notes that the Montana Supreme Court followed a clear and predictable set of principles in dealing with the issue of what law applies to the out-of-state auto policy involved in an accident in Montana for almost thirty years, from Kemp in 1979 until Moodro in 2008. The end result of the last two years, however, is a confused abandonment of Montana's materially greater interest in its public policy protection for consumers of auto insurance. The article asserts that this interest needs to be inserted back …

The Relationship Between Obesity And Skin And Soft Tissue Infections, Juliana Swiney Jan 2010

The Relationship Between Obesity And Skin And Soft Tissue Infections, Juliana Swiney

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Problem:

It is well known that our country is experiencing an obesity epidemic: 33.9% of all adults are obese (BMI>30) and 67% of adults are either overweight or obese (BMI>25). Obesity is a risk factor for several serious disease states such as, diabetes, stroke, hypertension, heart disease and some types of cancer. It also has a less well defined relationship with skin and soft tissue infections.

Although it is known that excessive weight increases the opportunity for harmful skin conditions, this relationship has not been as well studied. Some of the mechanisms that predispose obese people to …

Can Cycles Of Neddylation And Deneddylation Provide Points For Possible Therapeutic Intervention?, Nadia Nocera Jan 2010

Can Cycles Of Neddylation And Deneddylation Provide Points For Possible Therapeutic Intervention?, Nadia Nocera

Quill & Scope

Neddylation plays a critical role in proteosomal degradation and the progression of the cell cycle. Inter- fering with the process of neddylation and deneddylation could provide points of therapy by promoting cell death or cell cycle arrest in cells that are undergoing rapid proliferation, such as in tumors. The cy- cle of neddylation and deneddylation is essential for cellular processes, and if it is inhibited or amplified in some way, this may disturb the proliferation of tumor and with further research, it may be used as a target for cancer therapy.

The Current State Of Hormonal And Nonhormonal Male Contraception, Catherine Buchanan-Mcgrath Jan 2010

The Current State Of Hormonal And Nonhormonal Male Contraception, Catherine Buchanan-Mcgrath

Theses & ETDs

The unintended pregnancy (UIP) rate in the United States is nearly 50%. To reduce UIP, a diverse range of contraceptive options should be available to men and women. Studies have shown that the availability of a diverse range of contraceptive options for both men and women increases the rate of correct and consistent usage, and may contribute to a decrease in the unintended UIP rate. The female contraceptive market is vast and includes the female condom, hysterectomy, and steroids delivered via pills, patches, vaginal rings, implants, injections, and Intra-Uterine Devices. Male-directed methods are comparatively less diverse and are limited to …

African Renaissance? The Emerging Security Structure Of The African Union, Lensa Kwadjo Jan 2010

African Renaissance? The Emerging Security Structure Of The African Union, Lensa Kwadjo

Theses & ETDs

The African Union, through its embrace of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, has embarked on an ambitious peace and security agenda that allows it to intervene in crises that involve genocide, crimes against humanity, or war crimes. However, the institutions lack of adequate financial and logistical capacity has made external donors necessary partners in the new emerging security structure of the African Union. By comparing how the African Union and its external donors have decided on, and implemented peacekeeping missions in Burundi, Sudan, and Somalia, this thesis seeks to gauge the progress the institution has made towards building a security …

When The Bough Breaks Parentless Children In Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess And The Secret Garden, Rebah N. Solomon Jan 2010

When The Bough Breaks Parentless Children In Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess And The Secret Garden, Rebah N. Solomon

Theses & ETDs

The thesis explores the relationship between parentless children and their ability to survive without a parent figure. The first chapter, A Little Princess, shows how Sara Crewe is able to survive, first without mother or father then as a penniless orphan, by telling stories to herself and others to nurture both her spirit and body. Saras storytelling, particularly her imagining herself as a princess in the face of adversity, allow to keep her dignity and noble spirit intact until she is rewarded with a new father figure. Her storytelling also serves as a comforting mother aspect toward herself and other …
