Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if one component of social economic status, participation in the free/reduced lunch program, predicts fall and winter literacy benchmark test scores and to discuss the components of a phonological awareness reading program. Method: Seventy kindergarten and first grade students from Brooks Elementary in DeKalb, Illinois, participated in this study. Assessments were given to test letter naming fluency and nonsense word reading fluency. In addition, each student was categorized according to lunch status. Results: lunch status alone predicted 1% of the variability in fall letter naming status and less than 1% of …

Public Education, Local Authority, And Democracy: The Implied Power Of North Carolina Counties To Impose School Impact Fees, Michael F. Roessler Jan 2010

Public Education, Local Authority, And Democracy: The Implied Power Of North Carolina Counties To Impose School Impact Fees, Michael F. Roessler

Campbell Law Review

This Article examines the authority of counties in North Carolina to impose fees such as those attempted in Durham and Union Counties and concludes, contrary to the decisions of the court of appeals, that counties do have the implied authority under existing law to impose such fees for the purpose of generating school construction revenue. This conclusion is reached not by a mechanistic application of rules of law, but with an application of the law that keeps in mind the aim of the North Carolina Constitution, the state's form of government, and the laws that distribute power to local governments. …

Is It All About The Money? Considering A Multi-Factor Test For Determining The Appropriateness Of Forced Partition Sales In North Carolina, Lawrence Anderson Moye Iv

Campbell Law Review

This Comment examines partition sales in North Carolina. First is a brief review of tenancy in common ownership and the dissolution remedy of partition. This is followed by a more detailed look into North Carolina's current partition sales statute and recent efforts to amend it. Arguments favoring and opposing the addition of a multi-factor test to the current statute will be discussed, as well as case analysis from three states whose courts consider non-economic factors when determining the appropriateness of ordering a partition sale. The conclusion critiques the arguments for and against the addition of a multi-factor test, and also …

An Analysis And Simulation Of An Emergency Department With Aims Towards Improving Network Flow And Efficiency Of Care, Amanda M. Dubois, Jakub Skwarek

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this project is to help improve E.R. operations, by minimizing patient wait times and utilizing resources fully and properly. One of the biggest issues in an ER is effectively serving all patients quickly without over burdening the human resources of the system. To do so staff must be utilized correctly, patients prioritized, and processes optimized and balanced within the system. However, many hospitals have very little data on actual times within the system or a true understanding of where delays occur. The project will seek to both determine what processes in the hospital are most detrimental to …

One such challenge is leaders being able to effectively lead such a diverse group of people. The purpose of this paper is to examine different cultural dimensions of five regions, each consisting of the two or three biggest countries in that region. After those dimensions are defined within each region, leadership styles for each region will be defined. Thus giving leaders a source to turn to when faced with the task of leading those from the regions that are …

Learning To Talk To An Other: Stories And Thoughts On Community Organizing In A Divided Nation, Greg James Capillo Jan 2010

Learning To Talk To An Other: Stories And Thoughts On Community Organizing In A Divided Nation, Greg James Capillo

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Unlike other fields of philosophy, we cannot simply agree to disagree about morality as practiced in politics. At some point, our moral values become policies that those who may not share those values must follow. The way we construct these disagreements and agreements then are vital to the continued functionality of our nation. In this essay, I will examine how John Rawls, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Jeffrey Stout construct the concept of justice and apply their thoughts to the dispute surrounding mountain top removal coal mining in Eastern Kentucky. John Rawls believes in a universally applicable, rationally generated form of justice. …

Adapting To Aging In Place: An Assessment Of Residential Living Facility Resident's Frequency Of Physical Activity, Maggie L. Roe

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Village Manor is medium sized independent retirement community in rural Kentucky. When the community was built in 1995, designers did not anticipate residents’ long term physical activity needs. In order to meet the needs of current and future residents, both resident physical activity levels and their expectations were examined. The Physical Activity Scale for Elderly (PASE) was administered (n = 23) to develop a profile of current physical activity. One focus group was held to develop themes relating to residents’ current physical activity program desires. Results showed that compared to the theoretical physical activity recommendations for this age group (mean …

Campus Architecture And Student Culture In American Higher Education, Alexandra R. Troxell Jan 2010

Campus Architecture And Student Culture In American Higher Education, Alexandra R. Troxell

Honors Theses

Human-environment interaction theory, as it specifically relates to architectural determinism, has an indispensible impact on student culture on college campuses. Under the assumptions of architectural determinism, this thesis examines the relationship between architecture and student culture on 30 American college campuses. Specifically, this thesis looks at uniformity of architectural style and color and the prevalence of traditional styles of architecture in relation to the institutions' campus cultures. The results of the study found that a significant relationship exists between student culture and uniformity of building color, but not between student culture and uniformity of style or the prevalence of traditional …

Geophysical Analysis Of Seasonal Montandon Gravel Ridge Water Table Fluctuation And Moisture Gradient Variation Due To Storm Events, Annie Strader Jan 2010

Geophysical Analysis Of Seasonal Montandon Gravel Ridge Water Table Fluctuation And Moisture Gradient Variation Due To Storm Events, Annie Strader

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research project is to continue exploring the Montandon Long-Term Hydrologic Research Site(LTHR) by using multiple geophysical methods to obtain more accurate and precise information regarding subsurface hydrologic properties of a local gravel ridge, which are important to both the health of surrounding ecosystems and local agriculture. Through using non-invasive geophysical methods such as seismic refraction, Direct Current resistivity and ground penetrating radar (GPR) instead of invasive methods such as boreholedrilling which displace sediment and may alter water flow, data collection is less likely to bias the data itself. In addition to imaging the gravel ridge subsurface, another …

Aristotle And The Importance Of Virtue In The Context Of The Politics And The Nicomachean Ethics And Its Relation To Today, Kyle Brandon Anthony Jan 2010

Aristotle And The Importance Of Virtue In The Context Of The Politics And The Nicomachean Ethics And Its Relation To Today, Kyle Brandon Anthony

Honors Theses

While much of Aristotle's works are preserved in various volumes, two of his famous works are the Nichmachean Ethics and the Politics, both of which contain a rich compilation of ethical and political thought. In the Ethics, Aristotle describes a thorough understanding of ethical and intellectual virtue. By pursuing these virtues, Aristotle argues that a person can achieve a life of fulfilling happiness. The ideal polis as described in the Politics serves as a place where the virtuous life is attained in the best manner.Citizens who pursue virtue make the polis better, and the rulers that guide the polis ensure …

Subcellular Localization Of The Non-Structural Proteins 3c And 3cd Of The Honeybee Virus Deformed Wing Virus, Cierra Nichole Danko Jan 2010

Subcellular Localization Of The Non-Structural Proteins 3c And 3cd Of The Honeybee Virus Deformed Wing Virus, Cierra Nichole Danko

Honors Theses

Apis mellifera L., the European honeybee, is a crucial pollinator of many important agricultural crops in the United States. Recently, honeybee colonies have been affected by Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a disorder in which the colony fails due to the disappearance of a key functional group of worker bees. Though no direct causalrelationship has been confirmed, hives that experience CCD have been shown to have a high incidence of Deformed Wing Virus (DWV), a common honeybee virus. While the genome sequence and gene-order of DWV has been analyzed fairly recently, few other studies have been performed to understand the molecular …

Pooled Trusts: An Introduction And Personal History, Thomas Simmons Jan 2010

Pooled Trusts: An Introduction And Personal History, Thomas Simmons

Faculty Publications

A "pooled trust" -- or a (d)(4)(c) trust -- is unique in several ways: (a) A pooled trust is not restricted to individuals under age 65 (although this is under challenge in certain states); (b) A pooled trust can be established by the individual himself/herself; and (c) The at-death "payback" requirement to satisfy the Medicaid lien at a beneficiary's death is stated differently than the payback requirement of a (d)(4)(A) (or "payback") trust. Trusts in other states other my own state of South Dakota have been established to qualify for the special pooled trust benefits. In 2003, I personally undertook …

Données Démographiques Pour Développement Ii—De La Recherche À L'Intervention: Améliorer L'Accès Et L'Utilsation Des Données Par Les Médias, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This policy brief describes the Population Council’s project to improve access and use of demographic, health, and other public sector data that are essential evidence for development policy planning and evaluation. In many countries, access to data is limited and, when data are available, the format is rarely user-friendly for nonprofessionals, limiting their potential applications. In recent years, the Population Council has examined access to and sharing of data through case studies in Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, and Uganda. In phase II of the project, the Council will strive to promote domestic demand for data by working with key intermediaries—the media.

Romance And Sex Before Marriage Among Young Women And Men In Andhra Pradesh, International Institute For Population Sciences (Iips), Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This policy brief documents the extent of pre-marital romantic and sexual relations experienced by young men and women in Andhra Pradesh, India and the extent to which pre-marital sexual experiences among young people are informed, safe, and wanted. Findings clearly highlight that many young men and a small minority of young women in Andhra Pradesh had engaged in sex before marriage and that many of them had initiated sexual activities uninformed, had engaged in unsafe relations, and/or had experienced unwanted relations. Findings that relatively few youth had been exposed to family life or sex education emphasize the need for increased …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Recognizing the urgent need to enable rural women to acquire accessible and high-quality abortion services in India, a consortium of organizations—including the Population Council—has come together with the goal of increasing access to legal, safe, and comprehensive abortion services, including postabortion family planning, in the public health system, especially among the rural poor. One of its key activities was to develop a comprehensive and evidence-based abortion care model suitable for rural women. The aim of this report is to shed light on community-level perspectives about abortion services and probe the experiences of women who had undergone abortion, to better understand …

The Causes Of Educational Differences In Fertility In Sub-Saharan Africa, John Bongaarts Jan 2010

The Causes Of Educational Differences In Fertility In Sub-Saharan Africa, John Bongaarts

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This working paper presents an analytic framework that describes the chain of causation linking fertility to its multiple layers of determinants, then analyzes the causes of educational fertility differences in 30 sub-Saharan African countries using data from DHS surveys. The results demonstrate that education levels are positively associated with demand for and use of contraception and negatively associated with fertility and desired family size. In addition, there are differences by level of education in the relationships between indicators. As education rises, fertility is lower at a given level of contraceptive use, contraceptive use is higher at a given level of …
