Phytoremediation Of Copper Contaminated Waste Water Using Lemna Minor, Mark Apelt Nov 2010

Phytoremediation Of Copper Contaminated Waste Water Using Lemna Minor, Mark Apelt

Theses and Dissertations

The use of natural remediation methods to remove contaminants from waste water is becoming more popular. Plants have been used for several decades, yet their use for municipal waste water contaminated by heavy metals is limited to a few studies which focus on the Mercury and Chromium (Bennicelli, et.al, 2004). This study specifically attempted to determine the viability for using Lemna minor to remediate municipally generated wastewater contaminated with copper. The study used 100 ml samples of wastewater, artificially spiked with 8 mg/L of copper sulfate and seeded with approximately 100 Lemna minor fronds. Each treatment was repeated 15 times …

Review: Disillusionment With Radical Social Groups, Kira J. Harris Nov 2010

Review: Disillusionment With Radical Social Groups, Kira J. Harris

Australian Counter Terrorism Conference

Disengagement from radical social groups is a complex process initiated by the experience of a crisis, or disillusionment causing a re-evaluation of involvement. This paper provides a review of the experiences that hinder group involvement and increases the likelihood of disengagement. Utilising the categorisation by Klandersman (2005) and Demant et al. (2008a), the factors are discussed under the themes of normative, affective, and continuance. Normative factors rely on the ideological premise to ensure membership is viewed as a moral obligation, while the affective factors incorporate the social and organisational aspects facilitating emotional attachment to the group, and continuance factors are …

The Effect Of Mentholated Cigarette Use On Interleukin-6 Responses Across Different Hiv Positive Race/Ethnic Subgroups, María J. Míguez-Burbano, Rhonda Rosenberg, Robert Malow, Ximena Burbano, Jessy Devieux, Nair Madhavan Nov 2010

The Effect Of Mentholated Cigarette Use On Interleukin-6 Responses Across Different Hiv Positive Race/Ethnic Subgroups, María J. Míguez-Burbano, Rhonda Rosenberg, Robert Malow, Ximena Burbano, Jessy Devieux, Nair Madhavan

ETSU Faculty Works

In this report, we analyze trends in interleukin-6 (IL-6) production in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH), as a function of smoking behaviors and race, using a clinic-based case-control design. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected from a multiethnic cohort of 120 PLWH to measure IL-6 in culture supernatant. The data indicated that stimulated PBMC produced significantly higher levels of IL-6 in smokers than nonsmokers. However, as expected, this relationship was substantially modified by race. The distinctive production of IL-6 across different racial groups highlights the need for additional studies and suggests that African American smokers have enhanced …

An Analytical Study Of It Security Governance And Its Adoption On Australian Organisations, Tanveer A. Zia Nov 2010

An Analytical Study Of It Security Governance And Its Adoption On Australian Organisations, Tanveer A. Zia

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Contemporary organisations are at infancy stages of adopting IT governance processes in Australia. Organisations who have adopted these processes underestimate the security processes within the governance framework. If the security processes are designed, they are often flawed with operational level implementation. This study investigates IT security governance broadly and in Australian organisations specifically. The objective of this study is to bring the local organisations in alignment with international standards and frameworks in terms of integration of information security, IT audits, risks and control measures. A survey of selected organisations is completed and results are presented in this paper identifying the …

Security Information Supplied By Australian Internet Service Providers, Patryk Szewczyk Nov 2010

Security Information Supplied By Australian Internet Service Providers, Patryk Szewczyk

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Results from previous studies indicate that numerous Internet Service Providers within Australia either have inadequately trained staff, or refuse to provide security support to end-users. This paper examines the security information supplied by Internet Service Providers on their website. Specifically content relating to securing; a wireless network, an ADSL router, and a Microsoft Windows based workstation. A further examination looked at the accuracy, currency, and accessibility of information provided. Results indicate that the information supplied by Internet Service Providers is either inadequate or may in fact further deter the end-user from appropriately securing their computer and networking devices.

Information Security Risk Assessment: Towards A Business Practice Perspective, Piya Shedden, Wally Smith, Atif Ahmad Nov 2010

Information Security Risk Assessment: Towards A Business Practice Perspective, Piya Shedden, Wally Smith, Atif Ahmad

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Information security risk assessments (ISRAs) are of great importance for organisations. Current ISRA methods identify an organisation’s security risks and provide a measured, analysed security risk profile of critical information assets in order to build plans to treat risk. However, despite prevalent use in organisations today, current methods adopt a limited view of information assets during risk identification. In the context of day-to-day activities, people copy, print and discuss information, leading to the ‘leakage’ of information assets. Employees will create and use unofficial assets as part of their day-to-day routines. Furthermore, employees will also possess important knowledge on how to …

The Complexity Of Security Studies In Nfc Payment System, Marc Pasquet, Sylvie Gerbaix Nov 2010

The Complexity Of Security Studies In Nfc Payment System, Marc Pasquet, Sylvie Gerbaix

Australian Information Security Management Conference

If we compare the security problem of a face-to-face contactless card payment process with a mobile phone NFC payment process, we may easily consider that the latter is far more difficult to study. Indeed, the more partners from different organizations involved in the process there are, the more complex the studies are and, accordingly, its protection. As well as the current solutions applied to studying the electronic payment security chain (Common Criteria, ISO 27005, etc), the James Reason model has pointed out the specific risks implied by the interaction between the different links in a complex chain. His theory has …

Evaluation Of Relate Using Rasch Analysis, Keitaro Yoshida Nov 2010

Evaluation Of Relate Using Rasch Analysis, Keitaro Yoshida

Theses and Dissertations

The importance of valid and reliable couple assessment has been increasing with growth in research on couple and family relationships as well as in therapeutic and educational interventions for couples and families. However, self-report instruments–the most popular type of couple assessment–have been criticized at least partly due to limitations in Classical Test Theory (CTT) which has been used solely in developing and evaluating couple assessments for decades. In an effort to address the limitations in the sole use of CTT in developing self-report couple assessments, the present study integrated a modern test theory called Item Response Theory (IRT) and evaluated …

Inhibition Of Cytomegalovirus Genome Maturation By The Halogenated Benzimidazoles, Anne Sauer Nov 2010

Inhibition Of Cytomegalovirus Genome Maturation By The Halogenated Benzimidazoles, Anne Sauer

Theses and Dissertations

Current FDA approved anti-cytomegalovirus antivirals are ganciclovir, foscarnet, and cidofovir. These drugs target the viral polymerase to inhibit DNA synthesis. Halogenated benzimidazoles target a step later in viral replication during packaging and cleavage of the viral genome. The compounds 2-Bromo-5,6-dichloro-1-(β-D-ribofuranosyl)benzimidazole (BDCRB) and 2,5,6-trichloro-1-(β-D-ribofuranosyl)benzimidazole (TCRB) are novel inhibitors of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and resistance to these compounds are found within the human cytomegalovirus viral terminase. Terminase is unique to the virus and in theory provides a good target for antiviral development. Beginning with a BDCRB resistant guinea pig cytomegalovirus observations found a single mutation located in the viral terminase gene UL89 …

America's P.R.I.D.E.: Entertainment Education As A Health Communication Intervention Strategy For Middle School And High School Students, Elizabeth Stephens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this dissertation research was to study the ways that members of the P.R.I.D.E. club at Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee used entertainment-education communication strategies in their presentations and the interpersonal persuasive strategies members used when talking with peers about substance abuse. Participants in this study were members of the P.R.I.D.E. club and ranged in age from 14-years-old to 18-years-old. My research questions examined how P.R.I.D.E. incorporated constructs of entertainment-education (emotional involvement, identification with characters, self-efficacy, perceived realism, and fear appeals) into their presentations to persuade peers to abstain from using alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, and examined …
