Isolation And Identification Of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus In Mosquito Pools, Timothy Bender Dec 2010

Isolation And Identification Of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus In Mosquito Pools, Timothy Bender

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

The Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes of many genera. This virus has a high mortality rate and frequent life-altering complications for survivors of infection. The current practice for isolating and identifying the EEEV has been restricted to testing pools of 50 or less mosquitoes. A procedure for simulating one infected mosquito in a pool of 100 was established and tested. Data collected shows the threshold pool size can be increased to 100 without loss of specificity or accuracy. This increased will be met with many benefits including economic savings and increased time efficiency.

I. Discovery And Optimization Of 2,5,6- Trisubstituted Benzimidazole Leads For Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Ii. Resynthesis Of Hit 2,5,7- Trisubstituted Benzimidazole Final Compounds, Lucy Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tuberculosis affects one-third of the world's population and is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Due to the rise of multi-drug resistant strains of the bacteria, a new antibiotic needs to be developed. FtsZ, a tubulin homologue, plays an essential role in bacterial cell division therefore making it a novel anti-microbial target in drug resistant strains of Mtb. Previous works from our laboratory have shown that a number of 2,5,6- and 2,5,7-trisubstituted benzimidazoles possess significant activity against Mtb by interfering with filamental temperature sensitive protein Z (FtsZ) polymerization. Libraries of novel trisubstituted benzimidazoles were created through rational design. Based …

A Study On Access Control, Trusted Languages, Constraints And Types Of An Ehr System., Hiep Minh Nguyen Vuong

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Cassandra is a role-based trust management language that utilizes Datalog with constraints to materialize security policies. A policy is a set of rules that can create and maintain roles, control users' access and manage different sets of information. With the help of Cassandra, the list of rules for NHS electronic health record system is constructed with readability. However, due to lack of real data and implementation, people cannot test and put their trust on the line. Patients often reject the ideas of sharing their information via a system if they cannot manage their own data. Doctors, on the other hand, …

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis Of Placenta Accreta, Shaista Afza, Imrana Masroor, Gulnaz Shafqat Dec 2010

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis Of Placenta Accreta, Shaista Afza, Imrana Masroor, Gulnaz Shafqat

Department of Radiology

Placenta accreta is the abnormal adherence of placenta to myometrium due to defect in decidua basalis. This type of placenta could not remove manually after delivery and lead to severe hemorrhage that may result in emergency cesarean hysterectomy. Prenatal diagnosis of placenta accreta is important because it reduces the fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality as appropriate pre-operative and per operative procedures are possible. Grey scale ultrasonography along with color Doppler imaging proves to be the non invasive, real time, readily available modality with high sensitivity and high positive predictive value.

Master's Theses

This study determined the state of the practice and emerging trends in developing greenhouse gas (GHG) thresholds of significance for use under the California Environmental Policy Act (CEQA). To describe the adopted, proposed or considered approaches for developing thresholds of significance by air districts and the thought processes behind these decisions, information was obtained through surveys and phone interviews from twelve employees of air districts in California, State agencies, and consultants that are considered experts on this issue. The results of this study include a comparison matrix of the approaches of the three air districts that have adopted or proposed …

Epicardial Wireless Pacemaker For Improved Left Ventricular Resynchronization (Conceptual Design), Rodney J. Hawkins Dec 2010

Epicardial Wireless Pacemaker For Improved Left Ventricular Resynchronization (Conceptual Design), Rodney J. Hawkins

Master's Theses

The human body is a well tuned mechanism where systems work in synergy to provide a healthy quality of life. The human circulatory system transports oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body delivering the proper nutrients for cells to function. When the heart malfunctions, serious complications can arise leading to sudden cardiac arrest. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is one heart disease that affects the synchrony of the heart’s ventricles.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has been widely accepted as a treatment for CHF. Similar to traditional dual chamber pacing techniques, CRT adds a pacing lead to stimulate …

The Use Of A Neonatal Mouse Model To Study Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections, Stephania A. Cormier, Dahui You, Srinivasa Honnegowda

Faculty Publications

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is the most significant cause of viral death in infants worldwide. The significant morbidity and mortality associated with this disease underscores the urgent need for the development of an RSV vaccine. The development of an RSV vaccine has been hampered by our limited understanding of the human host immune system, which plays a significant role in RSV pathogenesis, susceptibility and vaccine efficacy. As a result, animal models have been developed to better understand the mechanisms by which RSV causes disease. Within the past few years, a revolutionary variation on these animal models has emerged - …

Reproductive Status Regulates Expression Of Sex Steroid And Gnrh Receptors In The Olfactory Bulb, Karen P. Maruska, Russell D. Fernald

Faculty Publications

Neuromodulators including gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and sex steroids help integrate an animal's internal physiological state with incoming external cues, and can have profound effects on the processing of behaviorally relevant information, particularly from the olfactory system. While GnRH and steroid receptors are present in olfactory processing regions across vertebrates, little is known about whether their expression levels change with internal physiological state or external social cues. We used qRT-PCR to measure mRNA levels of two GnRH receptors (GnRH-R1, GnRH-R2), five sex steroid receptors (estrogen receptors: ERα, ERβa, ERβb; androgen receptors: ARα, ARβ), and aromatase in the olfactory bulb of the …

Message from the President: Those who watch the operations of the administration from the outside are easily tempted to regard the basis of administrative action as the will to power or a taste for conspiracy or a lust for publicity. To be sure, all these passions flow through the administrative nervous system. The inside experience of the academic approximation of power, however, reveals a far different prime directive: fear. Readers of Shakespeare’s tragedies and history plays know the story all too well: a person with formidable talents who may or may not be suited to rule a domain and who …

The Contribution Of Wildlife To Sustainable Natural Resource Utilization In Namibia: A Review, Diana L.Schalkwyk Van Schalkwyk, Kenneth W. Mcmillin, R. Corli Witthuhn, Louw C. Hoffman

Faculty Publications

Namibia is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa, but well known for its richness in species and sustainable natural resource utilization. The Namibian farming sector consists mainly of extensive farming systems. Cattle production contributes 54% of the livestock sector's production output, followed by sheep and goats (25%), hides and skins (9%), and other forms of agricultural production (12%). Namibia's freehold farmers have obtained ownership rights over land and livestock since the early 1900s; commercial rights over wildlife and plants were given to freehold farmers in 1967 and to communal farmers in 1996. Natural resource-based production systems then overtook agricultural production …

Bb0250 Of Borrelia Burgdorferi Is A Conserved And Essential Inner Membrane Protein Required For Cell Division, Fang Ting Liang, Qilong Xu, Rakesh Sikdar, Ying Xiao, James S. Cox, William T. Doerrler

Faculty Publications

The gene bb0250 of Borrelia burgdorferi is a homolog of the dedA family, encoding integral inner membrane proteins that are present in nearly all species of bacteria. To date, no precise function has been attributed to any dedA gene. Unlike many bacterial species, such as Escherichia coli, which has eight dedA genes, B. burgdorferi possesses only one, annotated bb0250, providing a unique opportunity to investigate the functions of the dedA family. Here, we show that bb0250 is able to restore normal growth and cell division to a temperature-sensitive E. coli mutant with simultaneous deletions of two dedA genes, yqjA and …

Centering The Voices Of South Carolina's Early Care And Education Teachers: A Multi-Case Study Examining How They Select And Are Informed By Professional Development, Lenna Young

All Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to the existing literature focused on quality early care and education (ECE). Specifically, this study examines two main research questions: (1) How do teachers in South Carolina licensed, privately-funded ECE programs select professional development opportunities and (2) How does participating in professional development inform their practices? These questions are particularly significant in light of the minimal requirements for teachers to enter the ECE field in South Carolina. Due to the low entry requirements for ECE teachers, professional development can play a key role in transforming minimally qualified individuals into teachers who care …

Concerning The Constitutionality Of Hydro-Fracking The Marcellus Shale, Sean Dillon Dec 2010

Concerning The Constitutionality Of Hydro-Fracking The Marcellus Shale, Sean Dillon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

The entire Marcellus Shale, from the Catskills of New York down to the northwestern border of West Virginia, is estimated to contain as little as 168 to as much as 516 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, resulting in major “shale play” in the region. If calculations are accurate, the Marcellus Shale may be one of the largest potential sources of any type of energy in this country. But the prospect of mining the Marcellus Shale is not without its downfalls. The extraction method to be used in these operations - a technique called hydraulic fracturing, also known as “hydro-fracking” …

Wildlife Management And The Forest Preserve, Jeffrey Auger Dec 2010

Wildlife Management And The Forest Preserve, Jeffrey Auger

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

The forever wild language of Article XIV of the New York State Constitution has sparked debate and controversy ever since its enactment. This paper examines how the Forest Preserves affect wildlife contained within the “wild forest lands” protected under Article XIV. Through examining the history of the article’s adoption it becomes clear that wildlife concerns were a chief motivating factor in preserving these forests. The paper then examines how wildlife is managed in New York, and discusses certain practices that may have implications on the “forever wild” designation. The economic and social benefits of hunting, fishing, and hiking for New …

Article Xiv, Agriculture, And Keeping New York’S Wilderness Wild, Hilary Atkin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

When the constitutional convention question is put on the ballot in 2017 as required by Article XIX, Section two of the New York State Constitution, the voters of New York will again choose whether to have a convention to revise or replace their Constitution. There are many issues related to the Forest Preserves of New York State that may lead delegates to consider whether Article XIV, Section one’s “forever wild” provision should be amended or eliminated. With the increasing popularity of the local farming movement in and around the Adirondack and Catskill Parks, delegates could consider amendments that clarify the …

A Trusting Public: How The Public Trust Doctrine Can Save The New York Forest Preserve, Katherine R. Leisch

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

The public trust doctrine was instituted in England as a permanent limitation on the powers of the Crown. The well-established doctrine was brought to America and applied equally in the states even after the states seceded from England. The doctrine has since served as an indestructible check on the government. Article XIV of the New York State Constitution ensures protection of its wilderness in perpetuity, solidifying the forest preserve as part of the public trust. The paper traces the beginnings of the public trust doctrine and its eventual application Article XIV. The author contemplates the indestructibility of the Forest Preserve …
