Donald Sutherland: The Politics And Erotics Of Submission, Jean Walton Dec 2010

Donald Sutherland: The Politics And Erotics Of Submission, Jean Walton

English and Creative Writing Faculty Publications

When Donald Sutherland burst onto the American film scene with his portrayal of Hawkeye in the unexpected Robert Altman hit M*A* S*H (1970), the popular press couldn't seem to agree on how best to characterize this new "un-Hollywood" star, fixing by turns on his Canadian background, his political activism, or his "funny peculiar" sense of humor (Dorothy Manners, "Sutherland - 'Actors Should Be Involved in Pertinent Causes,'" L.A. Examiner Sunday, 12 July 1970, n.p.; Douglas Marshall, "The Funniest Film Actor Canada Has Ever Produced," Maclean's, 1 September 1970, 42). After the release a few months later of Kelly's Heroes (1970), …

Why Curvature In L-Curve: Combining Soft Constraints, Uram Anibal Sosa Aguirre, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In solving inverse problems, one of the successful methods of determining the appropriate value of the regularization parameter is the L-curve method of combining the corresponding soft constraints, when we plot the curve describing the dependence of the logarithm $x$ of the mean square difference on the logarithm $y$ of the mean square non-smoothness, and select a point on this curve at which the curvature is the largest. This method is empirically successful, but from the theoretical viewpoint, it is not clear why we should use curvature and not some other criterion. In this paper, we show that reasonable scale-invariance …

Perception Of Control: Accuracy Among Optimists And Pessimists On Noncontingency And Contingengy Tasks, Spencer Baunn M.S. Dec 2010

Perception Of Control: Accuracy Among Optimists And Pessimists On Noncontingency And Contingengy Tasks, Spencer Baunn M.S.

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The learned helplessness theory asserts that depressed individuals unrealistically believe that they have little to no control over aversive outcomes in their lives. Paradoxically, research on judgment of control has demonstrated that depressed individuals are not necessarily pessimistic, but rather more realistic than non-depressed individuals. Most of the research on depressive realism has investigated individual’s perceived control in situations in which they have no actual control. Few studies have investigated perception of control in situations where control is possible. Considering that many circumstances in life are controllable, it is important to examine how different personality variables contribute to accurate judgments …

One Toke Over The Line: The Proliferation Of State Medical Marijuana Laws, Troy E. Grandel Dec 2010

One Toke Over The Line: The Proliferation Of State Medical Marijuana Laws, Troy E. Grandel

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Marijuana has been used for medicinal purposes for at least five thousand years. In fact, it was used medicinally in the United States up until the twentieth century when antidrug zealots managed to prohibit it. Prohibition was the status quo until 1996 when California became the first state to adopt a law allowing medicinal marijuana use. Since then, thirteen additional states, along with the District of Columbia, have enacted similar laws. More states are now lining up with their own laws, which are in various stages of adoption. In addition, the Supreme Court has impacted the issue, both with …

Nanocrystalline Piezoresistive Polysilicon Film Obtained By Aluminum Induced Crystallization For Pressure Sensing Applications, Suraj Kumar Patil Dec 2010

Nanocrystalline Piezoresistive Polysilicon Film Obtained By Aluminum Induced Crystallization For Pressure Sensing Applications, Suraj Kumar Patil

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The overall objective of our research was to integrate various sensors on to a single flexible substrate for multi-sensory information gathering. Additional capabilities could be incorporated towards the realization of 'smart skin' for simultaneous and real time sensing of various mechanical, biological and chemical stimuli. Recent research venues are dictated by the trend of shifting from conventional silicon (Si) substrates to lower weight, low profile, structurally robust and lower cost flexible substrates. These flexible substrates easily conform to non-planar objects, could be batch fabricated at lower cost and enable multilayer construction. This would eventually evolve into seamless assimilation of sensors …

Direct Care Workers Perceptions And Practices Related To Quality Of Life In Long Term Care, Karen M. Kinyon Dec 2010

Direct Care Workers Perceptions And Practices Related To Quality Of Life In Long Term Care, Karen M. Kinyon

Dissertations

The focus of this case study was to discover how DCWs define success in their practice and what institutional and individual factors contribute to their successful practices. It describes how DCWs perceive quality of life for NH residents and how their practices reflect quality of life indicators. The conceptual model for which this research is based on was developed around the concepts that individual and institutional factors contribute to the successful practices of direct care workers; and, how these DCWs perceive quality of life influences how they practice to promote quality of life for nursing home residents. Using a case …

Generation Of Conformation Sensor Recombinant Antibodies To Understand Redox Regulation Of Ptp1b, Aftabul Haque Dec 2010

Generation Of Conformation Sensor Recombinant Antibodies To Understand Redox Regulation Of Ptp1b, Aftabul Haque

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) plays important roles in down-regulation of insulin signaling. Although it has been established as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetes and obesity, the finding of pharmaceutically acceptable inhibitors remains challenging. PTP1B is regulated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in response to insulin. The reversibly oxidized form of this enzyme (PTP1B-OX) is inhibited and undergoes profound conformational changes at the active site. We hypothesized that a conformation-sensor antibody that recognizes PTP1B-OX may stabilize the inactive state and inhibit phosphatase activity. We isolated PTP1B-OX-specific single chain variable fragments (scFvs) from an antibody phage …

Multixenobiotic Resistance (Mxr) Inhibition And Interactive Toxic Effects Of The Cationic Surfactant, Benzalkonium Chloride, In Embryonic Medaka (Oryzias Latipes), John Gondek

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Contaminated environments represent a challenge to resident species. Organisms must possess underlying mechanisms of resistance to protect against a broad range of environmental insults. One mechanism likely conferring resistance is expression of low substrate specificity membrane efflux transporters termed multixenobiotic resistance (MXR). MXR transporters confer resistance by preventing toxics from entering into cells and also by expelling potentially cyto- and genotoxic metabolites. Chemicals known as chemosensitizers, which can inhibit MXR function thus represent a threat to aquatic organisms. This study used embryos of medaka (Oryzias latipes) to measure MXR activity and inhibition through a dye exclusion assay. This assay was …

Note – Blowing The Whistle On Van Asdale: Analysis And Recommendations, Christopher Wiener

UC Law Journal

This Note examines the state of whistleblower protection at the state and federal level. It focuses on the protection granted to whistleblowers of securities fraud under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Most courts considering the statute have required that the plaintiff have had both an objective and subjective belief that securities fraud had been committed. In 2009, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decided Van Asdale v. International Game Technology. The court broke with the other circuits in not requiring the plaintiff-employees to have a subjective belief that a violation had actually occurred and, instead, conferred …

Wing Pathology Of White-Nose Syndrome In Bats Suggests Life-Threatening Disruption Of Physiology, Paul M. Cryan, Carol Uphoff Meteyer, Justin G. Boyles, David S. Blehert Dec 2010

Wing Pathology Of White-Nose Syndrome In Bats Suggests Life-Threatening Disruption Of Physiology, Paul M. Cryan, Carol Uphoff Meteyer, Justin G. Boyles, David S. Blehert

KIP Articles

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is causing unprecedented declines in several species of North American bats. The characteristic lesions of WNS are caused by the fungus Geomyces destructans , which erodes and replaces the living skin of bats while they hibernate. It is unknown how this infection kills the bats. We review here the unique physiological importance of wings to hibernating bats in relation to the damage caused by G. destructans and propose that mortality is caused by catastrophic disruption of wing-dependent physiological functions. Mechanisms of disease associated with G. destructans seem specific to hibernating bats and are most analogous to disease …

Expression Of Functional Bacterial Undecaprenyl Pyrophosphate Synthase In The Yeast Rer2{Delta} Mutant And Cho Cells., Jeffrey S. Rush, Sergey Matveev, Ziqiang Guan, Christian R H Raetz, C J Waechter

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

During evolution the average chain length of polyisoprenoid glycosyl carrier lipids increased from C55 (prokaryotes) to C75 (yeast) to C95 (mammalian cells). In this study, the ability of the E. coli enzyme, undecaprenyl pyrophosphate synthase (UPPS), to complement the loss of the yeast cis-isoprenyltransferase in the rer2Δ mutant was tested to determine if (55)dolichyl phosphate (Dol-P) could functionally substitute in the protein N-glycosylation pathway for (75)Dol-P, the normal isoprenologue synthesized in S. cerevisiae. First, expression of UPPS in the yeast mutant was found to complement the growth and the hypoglycosylation of carboxypeptidase Y defects suggesting that the (55)polyprenyl-P-P intermediate was …

Topology And Function Of Nyctalopin In Yeast And In-Vitro Translation Systems., Pasano Pasano Bojang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Congenital stationary night blindness 1 (CSNBl) is a genetic disorder characterized in humans by night blindness, low visual acuity and myopia. CSNB 1 is caused by defects in genes that are involved in signaling between photoreceptors and depolarizing bipolar cells (DBCs). DBCs utilize a metabotropic glutamate receptor-6 (Grm6) cascade that modulates the activity of a non-specific cation channel. CSNBI is diagnosed by a reduced b-wave in the electroretinogram (ERG). A b-wave indicates that DBCs are depolarized in response to a flash of light. In the dark, there is a tonic release of glutamate from the photoreceptors into the synaptic cleft. …
