Correlates Of Inter-Generational Transmission Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nivin A. Qudeimat-Tercero
Correlates Of Inter-Generational Transmission Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nivin A. Qudeimat-Tercero
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Intimate partner violence is a prevalent phenomenon plaguing society, with its negative effects being propagated from one generation to the next. The author hypothesized that there exists a qualitative correlation between male children who witnessed adult males perpetrate violence against females in childhood and subsequent adult onset perpetration of violence against women. After conducting a meta-analysis of 44 peer-reviewed articles, the author found that: (a) children who witnessed interparental IPV manifested increased disturbed behaviors as well as cognitive and emotional impairment corresponding to the severity and frequency of the episodes witnessed; and (b) men who witnessed parental IPV were more …

The Significance Of Preattentive Visual Search (Pavs) In Glaucoma, James Loughman, Peter Davison
Conference Papers
The Significance of Preattentive Visual Search (PAVS) in Glaucoma Methods: A novel test of PAVS, incorporating tests for flicker, motion displacement and orientation, presented on a computer monitor was developed for the detection and monitoring of glaucoma. Patients were required to detect a unique target from a background of 119 distractors. Normality was determined on the basis of patient response times measured using a two-alternative forced choice paradigm. Data were collected on 123 subjects, 41 with existing glaucoma, 41 glaucoma suspects, and 41 age-matched normals. Results: Paired samples t test indicated a statistically significant difference in PAVS response times between …
Using Propensity Score Modeling To Minimize The Influence Of Confounding Risks Related To Prenatal Tobacco Exposure, (Julia) Hua Fang, Craig Johnson, Nicolas Chevalier, Christian Stopp, Sandra A. Wiebe, Lauren S. Wakschlag, Kimberly A. Espy
Using Propensity Score Modeling To Minimize The Influence Of Confounding Risks Related To Prenatal Tobacco Exposure, (Julia) Hua Fang, Craig Johnson, Nicolas Chevalier, Christian Stopp, Sandra A. Wiebe, Lauren S. Wakschlag, Kimberly A. Espy
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
Introduction: Despite efforts to control for confounding variables using stringent sampling plans, selection bias typically exists in observational studies, resulting in unbalanced comparison groups. Ignoring selection bias can result in unreliable or misleading estimates of the causal effect.
Methods: Generalized boosted models were used to estimate propensity scores from 42 confounding variables for a sample of 361 neonates. Using emergent neonatal attention and orientation skills as an example developmental outcome, we examined the impact of tobacco exposure with and without accounting for selection bias. Weight at birth, an outcome related to tobacco exposure, also was used to examine the functionality …
Organic And Sustainable: The Emergence, Formalization And Performance Of A September 11th Disaster Relief Organization, David A. Campbell
Organic And Sustainable: The Emergence, Formalization And Performance Of A September 11th Disaster Relief Organization, David A. Campbell
Public Administration Faculty Scholarship
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, spawned 252 new nonprofit organizations. We know little about these organizations, including how they emerged, formalized, met constituents' expectations for immediate performance, and ultimately survived. This article explores these issues through a case study of one successful organization, the Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund. Using concepts from disaster, organizational ecology, and entrepreneurship research, the analysis identifies six propositions that link these literatures, notably the role of resource acquisition in formalization and the role of legitimacy in both fund development and organizational endurance. The study contributes new knowledge about the role of collaboration …

The Surge: General Petraeus And The Turnaround In Iraq, William A. Knowlton , Jr.
ICAF Case Studies
When General David H. Petraeus, USA, took command of Multi-National Force–Iraq (MNF–I) on February 10, 2007, beginning his 3d tour and 28th month in Iraq, the situation was grim. Increasing sectarian violence had led to an escalation of killings of civilians in Iraq, with up to 150 corpses being found daily in Baghdad.1 The government of Prime Minister Nouri alMaliki was viewed by almost everyone as ineffective at best, and the U.S. military strategy was not well defined and clearly not working. Iraq appeared to be sliding out of control toward civil war or disintegration, and the United States appeared …

Tā, Vā , And Moana: Temporality, Spatiality, And Indigeneity, Hūfanga ‘Okusitino Māhina
Pacific Studies
This article explores how indigenous perspectives—specifically from the Moana—can reshape the way anthropology is practiced and understood. A key focus is on genealogy, not just as family lineage, but as a powerful tool for understanding how people, places, and histories are connected across time and space. The article argues that genealogy in Moana cultures is deeply philosophical and relational, helping to explain how individuals and communities locate themselves within broader social and natural worlds. This approach is grounded in the Moana concepts of tā (time) and vā (space).
Teu Le Va: Toward A Native Anthropology, Melani Anae
Teu Le Va: Toward A Native Anthropology, Melani Anae
Pacific Studies
The Samoan word va tapuia, includes the term “tapu,” within. The term literally refers to the sacred (tapu-ia) relationship (va) between man and all things, animate and inanimate. It implies that in our relationships with all things, living and dead, there exists a sacred essence, a life force beyond human reckoning. The distinction here between what is living and what is dead is premised not so much on whether a “life force,” i.e. a mauli or fatu manava exists in the thing (i.e. whether a “life-breath” of “heart beat” exudes from it), but whether that thing, living …

The Interweaving Of People, Time, And Place—Whakapapa As Context And Method, Lily George, Te Kapotai/Ngaapuhi/Paakehaa
Pacific Studies
Set along the Waikare River in Aotearoa, this autoethnographic reflection explores the cultural, genealogical, and epistemological significance of whakapapa in Maori knowledge systems. As an indigenous Maori anthropologist, the author emphasizes that whakapapa not only traces genealogical lineage but also serves as a foundational framework for understanding phenomena, conducting research, and navigating identity within indigenous anthropology. By drawing from traditional cosmology and intergenerational knowledge—including divine origin stories and spiritual relationships with landscape—this introduction positions whakapapa as both method and context in the pursuit of knowledge and cultural survival.
Between Tolerance And Talk: Idiomatic Kinship And Ethnography In The Multiethnic Pacific, Ping-Ann Addo
Between Tolerance And Talk: Idiomatic Kinship And Ethnography In The Multiethnic Pacific, Ping-Ann Addo
Pacific Studies
This paper examines the interplay between identity politics and ethnographic practice among indigenous and mixed-race transnational scholars. Using a genealogical framework, the author explores how kinship—formed through fieldwork—shapes solidarity, tension, and the politics of racial categorization within Pacific research communities. The work reflects on personal experiences navigating complex ethnic identities in Tongan society, revealing how cultural perceptions and adopted kinship challenge dominant race frameworks. Ultimately, the study advocates for a more reflexive and dialogic anthropology that centers mutual racialization, layered identity, and political economy as key to understanding and improving ethnographic engagement.

Non-Patient Laboratory Outreach Testing Feasibility Study For A Community Hospital Laboratory, Krista S. Montano
Non-Patient Laboratory Outreach Testing Feasibility Study For A Community Hospital Laboratory, Krista S. Montano
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
An assessment of the feasibility was conducted for developing, and implementing a new service that would accept non-patient specimens for testing in a community hospital laboratory. The service would improve the delivery of healthcare services for patient, physician, and community through the recommendations. Costs persistently rise and shortages amongst physicians and other patient care personnel are climbing. Supporting our community and system physicians by offering high quality laboratory testing in a timely manner with consultative services offered by pathology reinforces a community hospital’s commitment to improving the physician experience. Diagnostic laboratory testing is a critical piece in treating patients, and …

The Hydrology Of The Carroll Cave-Toronto Springs System: Identifying And Examining Source Mixing Through Dye Tracing, Geochemical Monitoring, Seepage Runs, And Statistical Methods, Benjamin Verlinden Miller
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In karst areas relationships between activities occurring on the surface and the overall health of the subsurface environment are often highly interconnected. However, the complex nature of karst flow systems can often make identification of these connections difficult. Carroll Cave, a large stream cave system located in the central Missouri Ozarks, is known for its biological and speleological significance. A dye tracing project to delineate a Carroll Cave recharge area through dye tracing has identified an area of 18.5 km2 which contributes water to the cave. The water from Thunder River within Carroll Cave was positively traced to eight springs …
Differentiating Anxiety And Depression Using The Clinical Assessment Of Depression, Zane K. Dempsey
Differentiating Anxiety And Depression Using The Clinical Assessment Of Depression, Zane K. Dempsey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Anxiety and depression are two disorders frequently diagnosed in adults. Given serious adverse affects such as physical health problems, interpersonal relationship difficulties, and suicide, differentiation in treatment of these often comorbid disorders is a necessity in providing appropriate care. The tripartite model of anxiety and depression (Clark & Watson, 1991) proposes that these disorders are linked by a common trait (Negative Affect) and differentiated by a trait common to depression (lack of Positive Affect) and a trait common to anxiety (Physiological Hyperarousal). The Clinical Assessment of Depression (CAD; Bracken & Howell, 2004), a recently published selfreport narrow-band measure of depression, …

Impact Of Stress Management On Learning In A Classroom Setting, Pankaj Mandale
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Stress is an important feature of the lives of college students and can impact negatively on learning. The effectiveness of an in-class stress management intervention for improving course content retention was tested with a cross-over design in two introductory graduate biostatistics classes. Each class met one day per week for the duration of the semester, and was taught by the same instructor, following the same syllabus. A pretest duplicating items on the midterm and final exam was administered to all students at the first class meeting. Identical midterm and final exams were administered in both classes. During the first half …
Gritting Teeth: A Memoir Of Unhealthy Love, Samantha L. Day
Gritting Teeth: A Memoir Of Unhealthy Love, Samantha L. Day
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Originally intended to be modeled after Eula Biss’s creative nonfiction essay “The Balloonists”—which tackles the subject of marriage via fragmented prose poems— “Gritting Teeth: A Memoir of Unhealthy Love” is a piece that has taken on a subject and form of its own. A memoirist like Vivian Gornick might not claim the writer’s piece, as it hesitates to offer a “story” in places. A memoirist like Sue William Silverman might not claim the piece, as it hesitates to be courageous at times. But this collage of song lyrics, research snippets, and even Craigslist postings works in conjunction with fragments from …

Caffeine Supplementation And Moderate Intensity Exercise Modulates The Cytotoxic Lymphocyte Subset (Cd+8) In Naive And Tolerant Individuals, Elizabeth Ann Fedor
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of caffeine supplementation on caffeine tolerant and caffeine naïve individual’s lymphocyte counts, apoptosis and migration levels. In addition, effects of exercise on post-caffeine ingestion lymphocyte counts, apoptosis and migration levels were determined. It was hypothesized that caffeine would alter the immune system cell counts, but that exercise would be able to restore the immune system to homeostasis. Seventeen Western Kentucky University students were tested (males n=7, females n=10; n=7: caffeine tolerant= 200mg or more per day group, n=9: caffeine naïve= 50mg or less per day group). In this double-blind investigation, …

In this research we are following the thermo-chemical degradation of wood in the absence of oxygen. The objectives are to evaluate the influence of heating rates on pyrolysis products obtained from wood pyrolysis and to evaluate the influence of acid pre-treatment on pyrolysis products. Depending on the wood heating rates, pyrolysis can be categorized as Flash pyrolysis, Fast pyrolysis, and Slow pyrolysis. We have evaluated the volatile products obtained at different heating rates and the volatile products obtained from sulfuric acid pre-treatment by using gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We have also performed thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) of raw wood samples …

An Application And Refinement Of The Karst Disturbance Index Through Evaluating Variability In Island Karst Disturbance In Puerto Rico, Brandon Lee Porter
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Karst environments are unique landscapes that contain important resources, including freshwater aquifers and specialized ecosystems, which are easily disturbed due to the interconnected nature of the surface and subsurface. The anthropogenic impacts on karst are deleterious to the ecosystems that are dependent on the karst environment and also to groundwater supplies. The Karst Disturbance Index (KDI) is a holistic tool used to measure anthropogenic impacts associated with karst environments, which has been applied and refined through studies performed in Florida and Italy, yet still remains untested and susceptible to modification for other areas. Application of the KDI in Arecibo, Puerto …
