An Assessment Of The Use Of Chimpanzees In Hepatitis C Research Past, Present And Future: 2. Alternative Replacement Methods, Jarrod Bailey Dec 2010

An Assessment Of The Use Of Chimpanzees In Hepatitis C Research Past, Present And Future: 2. Alternative Replacement Methods, Jarrod Bailey

Experimentation Collection

The use of chimpanzees in hepatitis C virus (HCV) research was examined in the report associated with this paper (1: Validity of the Chimpanzee Model), in which it was concluded that claims of past necessity of chimpanzee use were exaggerated, and that claims of current and future indispensability were unjustifiable. Furthermore, given the serious scientific and ethical issues surrounding chimpanzee experimentation, it was proposed that it must now be considered redundant — particularly in light of the demonstrable contribution of alternative methods to past and current scientific progress, and the future promise that these methods hold. This paper builds on …

An Assessment Of The Use Of Chimpanzees In Hepatitis C Research Past, Present And Future: 1. Validity Of The Chimpanzee Model, Jarrod Bailey

Experimentation Collection

The USA is the only significant user of chimpanzees in biomedical research in the world, since many countries have banned or limited the practice due to substantial ethical, economic and scientific concerns. Advocates of chimpanzee use cite hepatitis C research as a major reason for its necessity and continuation, in spite of supporting evidence that is scant and often anecdotal. This paper examines the scientific and ethical issues surrounding chimpanzee hepatitis C research, and concludes that claims of the necessity of chimpanzees in historical and future hepatitis C research are exaggerated and unjustifiable, respectively. The chimpanzee model has several major …

Although managers safeguard protected areas for migratory species, little consideration has been given to how migratory species might benefit parks. Additionally, whereas land‐sea connections are considered in management of protected areas, most effort has focused on reducing negative “downstream” processes. Here, we offer a proposal to promote positive “upstream” processes by safeguarding the seasonal pulse of marine nutrients imported into freshwater and riparian ecosystems by spawning migrations of Pacific salmon. Currently, high rates of fishing limit this important contribution to species and processes that terrestrial parks were designed to protect. Accordingly, we propose limiting exploitation in areas and periods through …

Intended, Proper, And Actual Utilization Of The Emergency Department: A Survey Of Emergency Nurses' Perceptions, Kyle Thomas Bergan

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of emergency nurses on the intended, ideal, and actual utilization of their emergency departments. Emergency nurses who self-identified by membership in a couple of online mailing lists catering to that specialty were invited via email to participate in an online survey. Participants described the purpose of the emergency department in which they work, along with their perception of how it is actually used and should be used. Responses were sorted by content analysis, with some of the resulting themes analyzed using demographic data supplied by participants. A range of responses …

The Scavenging Behaviour Of The Australian Raven (Corvus Coronoides): Patterns And Influencing Factors, R. Christopher O'Brien, Alexande Larcombe, Jan Meyer, Shari L. Forbes, Ian Dadour

Forensic Science Publications

The Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides) is a widespread, abundant corvid which is often considered a pest species, due to the thought that it predates on livestock, ruin crops, and is often seen feeding on refuse, in both urban and rural areas. The species is known to feed on a range of material from seeds in ploughed fields to human refuse and decomposing organic material. A large proportion of its diet consists of carrion, and as such, the Australian Raven is an effective detrivorous species capable of removing and consuming dead and decomposing carcasses. This research examined the scavenging …

Measures Of Immune System Status In Young-Of-The-Year Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) From Long Island Coastal Bays, Jaime Solange Romany Dec 2010

Measures Of Immune System Status In Young-Of-The-Year Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) From Long Island Coastal Bays, Jaime Solange Romany

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The immune status of YOY winter flounder was evaluated in fish collected from six areas around Long Island, including Jamaica Bay, Little Neck Bay, Manhasset Bay, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, and Shinnecock Bay; sites geographically distributed from west to east, representing a large gradient in urbanization, and thus likely contaminant inputs from the water shed. Fish were collected from June to October, and expression of pleurocidin, a gene coding for an antimicrobial peptide found in skin mucus, as well as antimicrobial activity of skin mucus assessed in individual fish from each site. Cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) expression was also measured as …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Seprase In Melanoma By The Canonical Transforming Growth Factor- (Tgf- ) Signaling Pathway, Shaun Tulley Dec 2010

Transcriptional Regulation Of Seprase In Melanoma By The Canonical Transforming Growth Factor- (Tgf- ) Signaling Pathway, Shaun Tulley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The tumor invasive phenotype driven by seprase expression/activity has been widely examined in an array of malignant tumor cell types, however very little is known about the regulatory mechanisms governing this critical protease. Human seprase (also named fibroblast activation protein-alpha (FAPΑ); antiplasmin-cleaving enzyme (APCE); dipeptidyl prolyl peptidase 5 (DPP5) is a 170 kDa homodimeric glycoprotein consisting of two 97 kDa subunits. Seprase is expressed at high levels by tumor cells and stromal fibroblasts in a variety of invasive carcinomas, but is essentially absent or undetectable in normal tissues except during active tissue remodeling in embryogenesis, and in the early stages …

Reading Into Race: Unsettled Reading And The Performance Of"Race", Julie Burton Swift Dec 2010

Reading Into Race: Unsettled Reading And The Performance Of"Race", Julie Burton Swift

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Reading, race, and the primary productive link between the two--performativity--are the subject of this dissertation. By reading the formative discourse of phrenology and Ethnology, as well as nineteenth-century textbooks which teach reading, I suggest a context in which reading operates as an expressive framework for the problematics of race. In considering selected works of Edgar Allan Poe, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and Herman Melville, I examine the uses to which reading is put, not only to elaborate, but to perform race. By looking at unsettled reading--breakdowns of reading, failures to read, readings that prove unaccountable to the text--I emphasize the …

Studies Of Auxetic Foam And Bridge Deformation Using Digital Speckle Photography, Jiandong Yu Dec 2010

Studies Of Auxetic Foam And Bridge Deformation Using Digital Speckle Photography, Jiandong Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The mechanical properties of auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) foam are studied and reviewed with different experimental methods. Developments in design, manufacture, test and analysis of auxetic foam and related composites are presented. Auxetic foam can be made by open-cell conventional PVC foam, through volumetric compressing and heating process successively. When cooling down to room temperature, the cellular micro structure of PVC foam has been turned out to be re-entranted, which means the ribs of each cell of the foam are protrude inward permanently due to the external mechanical and thermal effects. The new re-entranted structure opens out many interesting and …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Health Care Usage: The Roles Of Perceptions Of Care & Expected Longevity, Jeffrey Alfred Jones Dec 2010

A Quantitative Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Health Care Usage: The Roles Of Perceptions Of Care & Expected Longevity, Jeffrey Alfred Jones

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Countless studies have documented the existence of disparities byrace and ethnicity in the health care system in the United States. However, not many have sought to explicitly quantify the relativeimportance of each of the proposed determining factors. Thisdissertation thus sought to identify the major causes of disparitiesin health care usage by employing an adaptation of theBlinder/Oaxaca decomposition method originally used in theliterature on wage differentials.Specifically, this study sought to investigate the roles that racialdifferences in patients' perceptions of care and expected longevity(as they relate to expected gains) might play in the observeddisparities in usage. Perceptions of care measures (trust andfear/dislike) were …

Links Between Conservation/Development Projects And International Conventions And Programs : The Southeastern Rainforest Of Madagascar., Benedicte Leclercq

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDPs) emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, to reconcile the need to protect threatened natural areas and, at the same time, to foster human development. Increasingly, around the world, natural resources were being rapidly depleted. In some cases local communities were held responsible for over-exploiting these resources, even when for their subsistence. The present research was based on an intensive case study of an ICDP developed within the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and implemented around Midongy-Befotaka National Park, in the Southeastern Humid Forests of Madagascar. The main activities involved were linked not …

Particle-Reactive Radionuclides (Th-234, Be-7 And Pb-210) As Tracers Of Sediment Dynamics In An Urban Coastal Lagoon (Jamaica Bay, Ny), Alisha Anne Renfro Dec 2010

Particle-Reactive Radionuclides (Th-234, Be-7 And Pb-210) As Tracers Of Sediment Dynamics In An Urban Coastal Lagoon (Jamaica Bay, Ny), Alisha Anne Renfro

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study has been motivated by the issue of marsh loss in Jamaica Bay, New York. A deficit in sediment supply has been implicated as a factor in the dramatic marsh loss, and we have used particle-reactive natural radionuclides as tracers for the transport and deposition of particles in the bay. The short-lived radionuclides 7Be (half-life = 53.3 days) and 234Th (half-life = 24.1 days) serve as tracers of particle dynamics on short-term (seasonal) time scales, while the longer lived 210Pb (half-life = 22.3 y) traces the fate of particles on decadal time scales. In Jamaica Bay, the well-characterized supply …

The Identification Of A Novel Binding Partner For Phospholipase Cβ1, Translin-¶Ðassociated Factor X: A Link To ¶Ÿrna Interference, Omozuanvbo Reginald Aisiku Dec 2010

The Identification Of A Novel Binding Partner For Phospholipase Cβ1, Translin-¶Ðassociated Factor X: A Link To ¶Ÿrna Interference, Omozuanvbo Reginald Aisiku

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Mammalian inositol-specific phospholipase Cβ1 (PLCβ1) is activated by Gαq subunits on the plasma membrane where it catalyzes hydrolysis of the minor membrane phosphatidylinositol 4,5 bisphosphate. While PLCβ1 localizes primarily to the plasma membrane it also exists in other compartments of the cell. It is not currently known what function PLCβ1 has in the cytosol and nucleus nor is it known what factors localize PLCβ1 to these compartments. In this study, we have identified a novel binding partner, translin-associated factor X (TRAX). Our experiments show that both proteins interact in solution and in cells. While TRAX exerts little effect on the …

The Gini Index And Measures Of Inequality, Frank A. Farris Dec 2010

The Gini Index And Measures Of Inequality, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

The Gini index is a summary statistic that measures how fairly a resource is distributed in a population; income is a primary example. In addition to a self-contained presentation of the Gini index, we give two equivalent ways to interpret this summary statistic: first in terms of the percentile level of the person who earns the average dollar, and second in terms of how the lower of two randomly chosen incomes compares, on average, to mean income.

The Role Of Owner In Capital Structure Decisions: An Analysis Of Single-Owner Corporations, James Ang, Rebel Cole, Daniel Lawson Dec 2010

The Role Of Owner In Capital Structure Decisions: An Analysis Of Single-Owner Corporations, James Ang, Rebel Cole, Daniel Lawson

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study examines the extent to which individual demographic characteristics of owners influence capital structure desisions. Using the Federal Reserve's 2003 Survey of Small Business Finances, we estimate the joint effects of traditional capital structure determinants and manager age, gender, education, business experience, sophistication, and wealth on the capital structure of single-owner corporations. By calculating the marginal contribution of personal risk tolerance, we demonstrate that owner preference contributes meaningfully to the explained variation in capital structure decisions.
