The search for longevity-determining genes in human has largely neglected the operation of genetic interactions. We have identified a novel combination of common variants of three genes that has a marked association with human lifespan and healthy aging. Subjects were recruited and stratified according to their genetically inferred ethnic affiliation to account for population structure. Haplotype analysis was performed in three candidate genes, and the haplotype combinations were tested for association with exceptional longevity. An HRAS1 haplotype enhanced the effect of an APOE haplotype on exceptional survival, and a LASS1 haplotype further augmented its magnitude. These results were replicated in …

There is no reliable method for determining age for most species of long-lived birds. Recent success using the skin chemical pentosidine as a biomarker has shown promise as an aging tool for birds. Pentosidine levels have been determined only from the breast tissue of carcasses, and we sought to refine the procedure with respect to biopsy size and location for safe and effective use on living birds. We compared pentosidine concentrations in 4 skin-size samples (4, 6, 8, and 20-mm diameter biopsies) from the breast of black vulture (Coragyps atratus) carcasses. We also compared pentosidine levels from breast …

The End Of The End : A Qualitative Exploration Of Barriers That Impact Social Workers' Capacity To Practice End-Of-Life Care To Inmates : A Project Based Upon Independent Investigation, Michael Ronald Smith
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative, exploratory study was to identify and examine barriers that impact social workers' capacity to provide end-of-life care to biopsychosocially, spiritually vulnerable inmates. The study was guided by the research question, What barriers impact social workers' capacity to provide end-of-life care to inmates? A sample of 12 master's-level social workers was recruited and interviewed. The sample consisted of ten women, two men, and one person of color. Participants in the sample worked in seven correctional institutions, in seven states, at the federal, state and county level. The study's findings indicate that at each of these levels, …

Geropsychiatric Nursing Staff: The Role Of Empowerment, Geriatric Caregiving Self-Efficacy, And Emotional Labor At Work, Ann Smolen-Hetzel
Theses and Dissertations
The current research examined the influence of the emotional labor strategies of faking emotion and suppression of emotion, empowerment, and geriatric caregiving self-efficacy on the relationship between work stress and emotional exhaustion—one dimension of burnout—for a sample of nursing staff members employed in a state-level geriatric psychiatric hospital. The total sample included 79 participants, which included registered nurses (n = 15), licensed practical nurses (n = 23) , and human service care workers (n = 41) who completed the Stress in General scale (Stanton, Balzer, Smith, Parra, & Ironson, 2001), Maslach Burnout Inventory (Human Services Survey; Maslach, Jackson & Leiter, …

Conceptual And Methodological Issues Relevant To Cytokine And Inflammatory Marker Measurements In Clinical Research., Xin Zhoua, Maren S. Fragala, Janet E. Mcelhaney, George A. Kuchel
UCHC Articles - Research
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide clinical investigators with an understanding of factors to consider when wishing to add cytokine and inflammatory marker measurements to their studies. RECENT FINDINGS: Inflammation involves complex and coordinated responses of the immune system to tissue damage. In the absence of tools to routinely assess inflammation within living tissues, measurements of humoral factors such as cytokines and other inflammatory mediators or markers can provide predictive clinical information and insights into disease mechanisms. Historically, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) became the gold standard, yet this approach of measuring a single protein in each sample limits the amount of …
