The Perceived Role Competencies And Qualifications Of Newly Hired Novice And Experienced Nurse Educators In Prelicensure Registered Nurse Programs: A Regional Study, Denice H. Kirchoff
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The health care profession is faced with a well publicized shortage of registered nurses. This shortage is accompanied by a declining number of nurse educators who are needed to prepare individuals entering the field. Factors recognized to be related to the educator shortage are the heavy workload and academic demands that immediately confront the new educator. Faculty members have reported feeling overwhelmed and uncertain of their decision to enter academia. Moreover, nurse educators enter into the profession with varying educational backgrounds which pose challenges to their respective nursing program to develop their entry level needs.;The purpose of the study was …
Predicting College Student Classroom Performance With A Simple Metacomprehension Scale, Amber Lee Klein
Predicting College Student Classroom Performance With A Simple Metacomprehension Scale, Amber Lee Klein
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The present study investigated the relationship between college student metacomprehension and the error of predicted classroom performance. College student metacomprehension was evaluated using the Metacomprehension Scale (MCS) designed by Moore, Zabrucky, and Commander (1997a). Prior to an examination administered by a course instructor, covering course content, students predicted the percentage score he/she expected to achieve. The predicted score was subtracted from the obtained score generating an error score. It was hypothesized that error of predicted classroom performance is a function of student metacomprehension, as measured by the MCS. Results indicate the MCS was not a reliable indicator of student predicted …
Older Adults And A Writing Workshop: A Phenomenological Study, Jennifer Lynn Alex
Older Adults And A Writing Workshop: A Phenomenological Study, Jennifer Lynn Alex
Dissertations
This study examines how older adults experience the phenomenon of participating in a writing workshop and how older adults interpret their experiences, understandings, and realities of writing. Ten older adults, ranging in age from 62 to 83 with varying degrees of experiences in writing, participated in this study. Through a semi-structured interview, each participant related his or her experience first as a writer and then as a member of a writing workshop offered through a Community Literacy Center in a mid-sized Appalachian city.
A phenomenological analysis method was used to identify and analyze themes of meaning that emerged in the …

A Study Of The Brief Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale (Bmslss) With Syrian Secondary And University Students, Emtanuos Michaeel
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
The Brief Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale (BMSLSS) is a self-report measure developed to assess life satisfaction among students in five specific domains: family, friends, school, self, and daily life. The purpose of the current study was to develop an Arabic version of this measure and to investigate its psychometric properties with Syrian secondary students as well as university students. With a sample of (N=1604), several methods were used to estimate the reliability and validity of the measure. The results showed satisfactory test-retest reliability and internal consistency coefficients. Also, the results provided evidence for the convergent and divergent validity. Further …
The Decision Making Process Of Informal Caregivers Of Dementia Family Members Regarding Nursing Home Placement, Rebecca Merritt
The Decision Making Process Of Informal Caregivers Of Dementia Family Members Regarding Nursing Home Placement, Rebecca Merritt
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the decision making process of caregivers placing their elderly family members in a nursing home facility. Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) was used, as well as the Critical Incident Technique (CIT). ELT was utilized in an effort to understand the learning that took place during the caregiving experiences, and CIT was used to better understand the critical incidents that led the caregivers to seek nursing home placement. A sample of twelve former informal dementia caregivers between the ages of fifty-seven and eighty-seven was drawn from the metropolitan Richmond, Virginia area. In-depth interviews were …

Food Science and Nutrition
Background: Systemic inflammation is linked to cardiovascular risk, but the influence of persistent pathogens, which are conventionally dichotomously categorized, on circulating levels of inflammatory markers is not clear. Antibody levels of pathogens have not been examined in relation to inflammation.
Methods: Using data from a subsample of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, we examined circulating levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen in relation to five common persistent pathogens: cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus-1, Hepatitis A virus, Helicobacter pylori and Chlamydia pneumoniae. We tested the hypothesis that the number of seropositive pathogens (based on conventional …

Implications Of Lifecourse Epidemiology For Research On Determinants Of Adult Disease, Sze Yan Liu, R N. Jones, M Maria Glymour
Implications Of Lifecourse Epidemiology For Research On Determinants Of Adult Disease, Sze Yan Liu, R N. Jones, M Maria Glymour
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Many diseases commonly associated with aging are now thought to have social and physiologic antecedents in early life. Understanding how the timing of exposure to early life risk factors influences later-life health may illuminate mechanisms driving adult health inequalities and identify possible points for effective interventions. Recognizing chronic diseases as developing across the lifecourse also has implications for the conduct of research on adult risk factors for disease. We review alternative conceptual models that describe how the timing of risk factor exposure relates to the development of disease. We propose some expansions of lifecourse models to improve their relevance for …

Regulation Of Proteome Maintenance Gene Expression By Activators Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Α, Hongzu Ren, Beena Vallanat, Holly M. Brown-Borg, Richard Currie, J. Christopher Corton
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
The nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) is activated by a large number of xenobiotic and hypolipidemic compounds called peroxisome proliferator chemicals (PPCs). One agonist of PPARα (WY-14,643) regulates responses in the mouse liver to chemical stress in part by altering expression of genes involved in proteome maintenance (PM) including protein chaperones in the heat shock protein (Hsp) family and proteasomal genes (Psm) involved in proteolysis. We hypothesized that other PPARα activators including diverse hypolipidemic and xenobiotic compounds also regulate PM genes in the rat and mouse liver. We examined the expression of PM genes in rat and mouse …

Microaggressions And Psychological Functioning Among High Achieving African-Americans: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Lucas Torres, Mark W. Driscoll, Anthony L. Burrow
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Racial microaggressions and their influence on mental health were examined among African American doctoral students and graduates of doctoral programs. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study first identified the types of microaggressions reported by African American participants (N = 97) and then investigated the mechanism by which these experiences influence mental health over time with a separate sample of African Americans (N = 107). The qualitative findings revealed three categories of microaggressions including Assumption of Criminality/Second-Class Citizen, Underestimation of Personal Ability, and Cultural/racial Isolation. The quantitative analyses found support for a moderated-mediational model by which Underestimation of …

We examined health-related quality of life in adults in the Louisiana Health Aging Study (LHAS) after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (HK/R) that made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast region in 2005. Analyses of pre- and post-disaster SF-36 scores yielded changes in physical function and bodily pain. Mental health scores were lower for women than men. Gender differences were observed in religious beliefs and religious coping, favoring women. Religious beliefs and religious coping were negatively correlated with physical function, implying that stronger reliance on religiosity as a coping mechanism may be more likely among those who are less physically capable. …
