A Proposal For An Evidence-Based Program For Communication Continuity, Yavonne G. Evans
A Proposal For An Evidence-Based Program For Communication Continuity, Yavonne G. Evans
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This doctor of nursing practice (DNP) executive leadership project is a practice-focused quality improvement initiative to reduce avoidable 30-day hospital readmissions in a skilled nursing facility by implementing the INTERACT communication tools, SBAR and STOP & WATCH. The practice problem is the lack of a standardized communication process for recognizing changes in resident conditions, contributing to preventable hospitalizations. The project's purpose was to develop an evidence-based communication process that promotes early recognition and timely provider intervention. The practice-focused question asked whether implementing INTERACT communication tools would improve communication and reduce avoidable acute care transfers. A focused literature search was conducted. …
Responsivity Education Reflection Packet For Multigenerational Caregivers, Natalie Holsky
Responsivity Education Reflection Packet For Multigenerational Caregivers, Natalie Holsky
Honors Projects
Caregivers play an essential role in supporting their child’s language development. Through everyday routines, caregivers have countless opportunities to foster strong language skills. Extensive research has examined the influence of caregiver input on language development. Comparatively little research has explored how historical trends in parenting advice across generations may shape caregivers’ use of language facilitation practices. The purpose of my honors project was to examine how generational parenting trends could inform the development of a clinic-to-home language facilitation resource. This resource was designed to help caregivers incorporate language facilitation strategies into everyday routines to increase language-rich interactions at home. A …

When Your Neighbours Are A Reminder Of Your Ageing, Cynthia Tan, Yi Wen (Chen Yiwen) Tan
When Your Neighbours Are A Reminder Of Your Ageing, Cynthia Tan, Yi Wen (Chen Yiwen) Tan
ROSA Journal Articles and Publications
In a commentary, Cynthia Tan, a retired senior corporate leader, and Tan Yi Wen, a Senior Research Fellow at SMU’s Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA), questioned whether the low demand for community care apartments is because seniors do not want only other seniors for company. They noted that most older people do not spend their days dwelling on ageing until everyone around them reminds them that they are growing old. They added that prolonged exposure to such an environment may carry subtle emotional and psychological consequences. Citing a national survey by ROSA, the writers mentioned that eight in …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Remote methods may help older adults improve their physical function, but understanding the perspectives of experts who deliver this care is critical. This modified Delphi process aimed to develop expert consensus on effectiveness, feasibility and implementation of remote assessment and management of physical function in older adults. Methods: This online Delphi process included experts involved in supporting older adults to maintain or improve their health. The Round 1 survey presented 33 Delphi statements assessed using an 11-point Likert scale (0–10; ≥7 indicated agreement). Statements with strong (≥80 %), moderate (50–<80 %) and low (<50 %) agreement were accepted, revised, or rejected, respectively. Revised statements were presented in Round 2, and accepted statements were consolidated into key messages. Results: In total, 108 respondents (67 % female; mean [SD] age 41.4 [10.9] years) from 16 countries (five continents) completed Round 1. Fourteen statements were accepted (88–100 % agreement) and 10 were rejected (8–39 % agreement). The remaining nine statements (52–69 % agreement) were revised, and two new statements were developed for Round 2, which was completed by 89 (82 %) respondents. Five Round 2 statements were accepted (82–93 % agreement). Seven key messages were developed from 19 accepted statements, highlighting that remote care should be accessible to older adults with requisite capabilities, is feasible for older adults and health professionals with adequate support and training, and requires guidelines, policies, and further research to support wider adoption. Conclusions: The findings of this Delphi process can inform the implementation of remote care approaches for assessing and managing physical function in older adults.

Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo
Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Occupational Applications: This study shows that time-critical automation intervention requests increase drivers’ visual-motor demands, reflected in measurable changes in driving performance and posture (i.e., limb engagement and trunk positioning) during transitions of control. These responses indicate that maneuver urgency and takeover timing can place elevated biomechanical and coordination demands on drivers, particularly in work-based automated driving. For ergonomics and human factors practice, the findings underscore the need to design automated transportation systems (e.g., ridesharing services) that align request timing with operators’ physical and perceptual capabilities. In occupational settings such as automated shuttles and fleet-supervised vehicles, intervention requests should provide adequate …
