Creative Possibilities And Responsibilities: A Review Of Maria J. Mayan's Essentials Of Qualitative Inquiry, Jacquelyn Browne
Creative Possibilities And Responsibilities: A Review Of Maria J. Mayan's Essentials Of Qualitative Inquiry, Jacquelyn Browne
The Qualitative Report
In her book, Essentials of Qualitative Inquiry (2009), Maria J. Mayan has provided a highly readable text. Using examples, tables, charts, plus exercises at the end of each chapter, a student new to the field, or an instructor looking for a useful text will find a good companion in this book. In addition to her thorough teaching, Maria Mayan uses humor, humility, and transparency to convey her deep moral and philosophical commitment to scientific rigor, as well as a deep sensitivity to honoring the stories researchers strive to tell about the human condition.

Battery And Abuse In The Elderly: A Forensic Analysis, Amy Y. Carney Phd, Mfs, Np
Dissertations
Elder abuse is a recognized social problem in the United States. First labeled as "granny battering" and originally studied under the umbrella of family violence, maltreatment of the elderly has received more funding and research in recent years. Multiple aspects of elder abuse have been examined in the literature including measures for detection, assessment, and documentation. Although studies have examined the circumstances surrounding abuse as well as theories of causation and characteristics of the abuser and the abused, studies of the relationship between the abuser and the abused are less well documented. The purpose of this research was to examine …

Int J Exerc Sci 3(2) : 49-54, 2010. Today’s students have unique learning needs and lack knowledge of core research skills. In this program report, we describe an online approach that we developed to teach core research skills to freshman and sophomore undergraduates. Specifically, we used two undergraduate kinesiology (KIN) courses designed to target students throughout campus (KIN1304: Public Health Issues in Physical Activity and Obesity) and specifically kinesiology majors (KIN1252: Foundations of Kinesiology). Our program was developed and validated at the 2nd largest ethnically diverse research university in the United States, thus we believe that it would be effective …

Impact Of Resilience Enhancing Programs On Youth Surviving The Beslan School Siege, Stefan Vetter, Igor Dulaev, Mario Mueller, Robert R. Henley, William T. Gallo, Zalina Kanukova
Publications and Research
The objective of this study was to evaluate a resilience-enhancing program for youth (mean age = 13.32 years) from Beslan, North Ossetia, in the Russian Federation. The program, offered in the summer of 2006, combined recreation, sport, and psychosocial rehabilitation activities for 94 participants, 46 of who were taken hostage in the 2004 school tragedy and experienced those events first hand. Self-reported resilience, as measured by the CD-RISC, was compared within subjects at the study baseline and at two follow-up assessments: immediately after the program and 6 months later. We also compared changes in resilience levels across groups that differed …
Restructuring Cary Quadrangle's Mentoring Program, Jason Ford
Restructuring Cary Quadrangle's Mentoring Program, Jason Ford
Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects
Cary Quadrangle, a residence hall at Purdue University, had suffered a decline in the effectiveness of its formal mentoring program for the last three years. Knowledge was not being transferred from mentor to protégé at the levels management expected and when mentors were trained they were told how important the mentoring program was, yet they were given no resources, goals, or tools to be successful. The program risked having negative consequences on the credibility of management or being cancelled completely if the program continued on its trajectory. The following initiatives were researched and implemented to improve quality and turn the …

Aps: Neglected Agency In Feed Of Transformation, Suncica Sue Vilic
Theses & Honors Papers
Approximately 3 million elders are mistreated annually in the United States. Due to factors such as increase in life expectancy, this number is likely to amplify. Adult Protective Services agencies across the nation have been established by The Social Security Act, with purpose and goal of providing services to stop elder mistreatment and prevent it from occurring further. Although program was created over 40 years ago, APS agencies continue to make little progress and are publicly and legislatively neglected when compared to child welfare programs and domestic violence programs.
This thesis presents overview of APS problems on local, state, and …

The Effects Of Gdf8 And Activin A On Muscle Atrophy, Amy Sato '10
The Effects Of Gdf8 And Activin A On Muscle Atrophy, Amy Sato '10
Honor Scholar Theses
Muscle atrophy and weakening are major health care concerns. For instance sarcopenia, which is a condition of extreme muscle loss and weakening due to aging, was estimated to have cost over 18.5 billion for the year 2000 in the US (Dirks & Leeuwenburgh, 2005). Abilities that depend upon muscle quality like strength, functional mobility, and balance are all key components for how people evaluate their self-rated health (SRH) and quality of life (QoL) (Ozcan et al., 2005; Sirola et al., 2010). Interestingly, SRH and QoL also serve as strong predictors for institutionalization, disability, and mortality for elderly populations (Marzetti & …

Who Wants To Do Rural Social Work? Student Perceptions Of Rural Social Work Practice, Amy Phillips Mssw, Phd, Andrew Quinn Mssw, Phd, Thomasine Heitkamp Msw
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
In response to growing concerns about the national shortage of rural social workers, the researchers surveyed and interviewed 115 social work students (97 BSW, 18 MSW) to ascertain their career plans and perceptions of rural social work practice. Although more than half reported living in rural communities at the time of their high school graduation, over 70% indicated a preference for practicing social work in or near an urban area. Students articulated multiple incentives that would attract them to rural social work and expressed a clear understanding of how various systems (social service, legislative, community, and educational) could provide these …
