Predicting Levels Of Latino Depression: Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Coping, Lucas Torres

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Past research has noted that aspects of living in the United States place Latinos at risk for experiencing psychological problems. However, the specific features of the adaptation process that contribute to depression remain unclear. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the ability of acculturation, acculturative stress, and coping to predict membership into low, medium, and high groups of depression among Latinos. Within a group of 148 Latino adults from the community, a multinomial logistic regression revealed that an Anglo orientation, English competency pressures, and active coping differentiated high from low depression and that a Latino orientation and, …

Intergenerational Communication: An Evaluation, William Bettes Mar 2010

Intergenerational Communication: An Evaluation, William Bettes

JCCC Honors Journal

The study evaluates communication tendencies in a younger college-age population and an older population with regard to intra- and intergenerational communication. Voluntary questionnaires were distributed to each population in an attempt to learn more about communication topics, comfort level, and frequency of communication within and outside one’s own age range. The findings support the hypothesis that when communicating intergenerationally, individuals tend to attempt to adapt to the person with whom they are communicating, while still retaining a large degree of independence. Further study is recommended on the topic of depth of self-disclosure among intergenerational dyads.

This paper fulfilled W. Bettes's …

Platelet Alpha- And Beta- Secretase Activities Are Not Significantly Affected By Dementia Or Mild Cognitive Impairment In Swedish Patients., Paul Gorham, Natalie Bark, Ingemar Bjorkhem, Steve Meaney, Milita Crisby

Articles

The processing of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) is a critical event in the formation of amyloid plaques which are composed of the 4kDa amyloid β-peptide (Aβ). Processing of APP occurs through a non-amyloidogenic pathway, mediated by initial α-secretase cleavage or through an amyloidogenic pathway via sequential cleavage by β- and γ- secretase enzymes, which produces Aβ peptides. Currently, the diagnosis of probable or possible Alzheimer's disease (AD) is primarily based on neuropsychological and neuroradiological assessment. Recent reports indicate that platelet β- secretase activity is moderately increased in patients with AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). To our knowledge platelet …
