A New Tool For Integrated And Interactive Sustainability Impact Assessment Of Urban Land Use Changes: The Plurel Iiat, Dagmar Haase, Annette Piorr, Nina Schwarz, Ingo Zasada

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The new integrated Impact Analysis Tool (iIAT) synthesises the modelling results from the impact analysis of land use changes of the EU-project PLUREL on periurban land use relationships and the effects of peri-urban land use change; www.plurel.net) into one stand-alone tool. It facilitates the integration of manifold aspects of problems of land use (change) and its functions and services related to urbanisation. It further considers conflicts of interest of different stakeholders such as residents, planners or developers within a planning process. The iIAT covers all dimensions of sustainability, namely the economic, the social and the environmental. Based on land use …

Remote Sensing Time Series For Modeling Invasive Species Distribution: A Case Study Of Tamarix Spp. In The Us And Mexico, Anna F. Cord, Doris Klein, Stefan Dech

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Detecting invasive species and predicting their potential distribution are crucial to coordinate management responses. Remote sensing data are now available in several spatial and temporal resolutions and can supply environmental models with additional information. This study uses the Maximum Entropy algorithm to model the current distribution of the saltcedar (Tamarix spp.) in the US and Mexico and to identify suitable habitats, both already inhabited and not yet occupied. Tamarisk is restricted to specific habitats such as riparian zones, wetlands and agricultural or disturbed areas, which are typically not only characterized by climate. To describe vegetation phenology and thermal seasonality in …

Land Use Change Modelling In An Urban Region With Simultaneous Population Growth And Shrinkage Including Planning And Governance Feedbacks, Dagmar Haase Jul 2010

Land Use Change Modelling In An Urban Region With Simultaneous Population Growth And Shrinkage Including Planning And Governance Feedbacks, Dagmar Haase

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the EU-project PLUREL we develop scenarios for future land use development in European urban regions facing population growth or shrinkage. We combine the spatially explicit modelling work with a participatory approach to involve stakeholder knowledge on drivers and policy instruments to steer land use development. Our scenario technique aims at incorporating feedbacks from planning into land use modelling. For modelling land use futures and options of the urban region of Leipzig- Halle, Germany, the MOLAND cellular automata model was used. To integrate stakeholder knowledge into the functionality of MOLAND and, so doing, to develop locally adapted land use storylines …

Evaluating The Impact Of Climate Change On Global Hpai H5n1 Outbreaks, Zhijie Zhang, Dongmei Chen, Wenbao Liu, Lei Wang Jul 2010

Evaluating The Impact Of Climate Change On Global Hpai H5n1 Outbreaks, Zhijie Zhang, Dongmei Chen, Wenbao Liu, Lei Wang

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses H5N1 have spread throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa in the past decade, raising serious worldwide concerns about a potential new pandemic. Many studies have investigated the spread of the HPAI H5N1 virus and discussed its possible risk factors. However, the climate factor, which can affect the whole process of H5N1 outbreaks, has been greatly ignored. The objective of this preliminary study is to use a GIS-based approach to explore the potential impacts of temperature change on H5N1 outbreaks. We have divided the outbreaks into five epidemic waves. Although the temperature ranges of different epidemic waves …

Exploring The Choice Of Decision Making Method In An Agent Based Model Of Land Use Change, A. R. Cabrera, P. J. Deadman, E. S. Brondizio, M. Pinedo-Vasquez Jul 2010

Exploring The Choice Of Decision Making Method In An Agent Based Model Of Land Use Change, A. R. Cabrera, P. J. Deadman, E. S. Brondizio, M. Pinedo-Vasquez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In agent-based models of land use/cover change (ABM/LUCC), small changes in micro-level decision-making methods used by agents may significantly affect macro-level outcomes. Yet, the implications of choosing a specific decision making model are seldom explored in ABM/LUCC studies. This paper discusses an ABM/LUCC modelling study of smallholder farming households in the Amazonian varzea in Maraj´o Island, Brazil. These agents represent the 21 households within the community of Paricatuba. Farmers in this community cultivate acai as a primary source of income, in addition to other farming and economic activities such as offsite employment. In the model, agents make annual decisions to …

The Northern-Global Climate Change Adaptation Dialogue, J. I. Maclellan Jul 2010

The Northern-Global Climate Change Adaptation Dialogue, J. I. Maclellan

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Although climate change adaptation can occur over various political, social, and institutionalscales, the majority of adaptation decisions take place at the local level where an intimate understanding ofthe particularities of local circumstances (i.e. successful responses to past extremes events) exist alongsidea lack of formalised expertise in projecting and analyzing future possibilities. The relationship between theexperts who produce counterfactual knowledge, and the individuals who apply it, is thus central to thechallenge of responding to climate change successfully. I present a deliberately polarized caricature of thisrelationship in an attempt to facilitate knowledge exchange (i.e. to identify barriers to knowledgeexchange). Through bibliometric analysis …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A central element of a sediment management plan for the Federal District ofBrasília, Western Central Brazil is a planning support tool that enables the user to test theeffects of land use changes on landscape processes and functions (LPF). In this paper, wepresent the web based tool Letsmap do Brasil. The tool has two principal interacting levels. The upper level contains information on effects of land use on LPF, i.e. runoff control, sediment retention, nitrogen availability, and agronomic value. The parameterized relationbetween land use and LPF is the core of the system. For each LPF a value specific to landuse has been assigned. …

Modelling Human Health By Levels Of Biological Organization, Wilfred R. Cuff, Clifford Clark, Paulette Richard, Venkata R S K Duvvuri Jul 2010

Modelling Human Health By Levels Of Biological Organization, Wilfred R. Cuff, Clifford Clark, Paulette Richard, Venkata R S K Duvvuri

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The hierarchy of levels in the organization of matter, or the “hierarchy of life”, is a fundamentalconcept in biology, and biologists are used to thinking about their work asbeing at a particular level. Yet medicine, in both research and application, operatessomewhat independently of this concept, working almost exclusively at levels at or belowthe individual. Through the relatively-recent expansion of epidemiology, medicinedoes reach up to the level of the population - but medicine at higher levels of biologicalorganization remains under-developed. In this paper we review the biological idea ofhierarchy of life and explore what medical research and practice might look like …

A Model To Evaluate Economic Effects Of Fishery Management Measures: How Would A Change In Total Allowable Catch For Monterey Groundfish Affect The Local Economy?, Monica Galligan Jul 2010

A Model To Evaluate Economic Effects Of Fishery Management Measures: How Would A Change In Total Allowable Catch For Monterey Groundfish Affect The Local Economy?, Monica Galligan

SNS Master's Theses

The research question addressed by this thesis is: if a modification to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act enabled an increase in Total Allowable Catch for a single species in the US West Coast groundfish fishery, what would be the direct and indirect economic effects on Monterey County, California? I used primary and secondary industry sources to build an Input/Output table reflecting the Monterey County economy, then calculated economic multipliers from this Input/Output table. I then calculated the likely increase in catch of relevant species (the species of focus and those that co-occur with it) and used recent ex-vessel …

Recreating The Law School To Increase Minority Participation: The Conceptual Law School, Patricia A. Wilson Jul 2010

Recreating The Law School To Increase Minority Participation: The Conceptual Law School, Patricia A. Wilson

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

That is the situation. Nonetheless, the purpose of this Article is not to criticize the current law school model. It is a model that has, in many respects, served society well, having produced thousands of competent lawyers over the years since it became the dominant model. It is the model that has produced all of the minority lawyers that are currently members of the profession. Moreover, to their credit, faculty and administration at many law schools are very motivated to improve the situation but are constrained in their efforts by the law and other factors. This Article is not meant …

Uob's Sustainable Approach To Talent Management For The Private Banking Industry, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

After a hiatus during the financial crisis, the poaching of private banking relationship managers is back. For the players, incumbent and new, local and international, poaching is probably the quickest and most straightforward means of a headcount-led expansion. No need to nurture and develop new recruits when they come nicely packaged with all the right credentials to hit the ground running. But what happens as more and more companies adopt this attitude to recruitment? Wilson Aw, head of private banking at United Overseas Bank, says the industry knows that it cannot grow from within such a vicious cycle. He shares …

Assessing Community Health Center (Chc) Assets And Capabilities For Recruiting And Retaining Physicians: The Chc Community Apgar Questionnaire, David Schmitz, Ed Baker, Ayaka Nukui, Benjamin Tverdy

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Community factors play a key role in the recruitment and retention of physicians. While prior workforce studies often investigated characteristics of the candidate-physician, the initial Critical Access Hospital Community Apgar Questionnaire (CAH CAQ) study identified community factors at critical access hospitals which help determine the success of achieving and maintaining an adequate local physician workforce. The goals of the current study are to identify opportunities for improvement in physician retention and recruitment in Idaho’s Community Health Center (CHC) systems and to develop a better understanding of the community factors in this dynamic process.

Discretionary Pricing, Mortgage Discrimination, And The Fair Housing Act, Robert G. Schwemm, Jeffrey L. Taren Jul 2010

Discretionary Pricing, Mortgage Discrimination, And The Fair Housing Act, Robert G. Schwemm, Jeffrey L. Taren

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

For generations, mortgage lending has always been the gateway to the American dream of homeownership, and, historically, has also been characterized by widespread discrimination against racial and ethnic minorities and their communities. Mortgage discrimination in the modem era has often been accomplished through a technique known as discretionary pricing, in which lenders allow their loan officers and brokers to increase borrowers' costs from an objectively determined base rate. In the past decade alone, discretionary pricing has cost minority homeowners billions of dollars in extra payments, which, in tum, has led these minorities to suffer higher foreclosure rates than whites and …

The History Of Mathematics As A Pedagogical Tool: Teaching The Integral Of The Secant Via Mercator’S Projection, Nick Haverhals, Matt Roscoe Jul 2010

The History Of Mathematics As A Pedagogical Tool: Teaching The Integral Of The Secant Via Mercator’S Projection, Nick Haverhals, Matt Roscoe

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article explores the use of the history of mathematics as a pedagogical tool for the teaching and learning of mathematics. In particular, we draw on the mathematically pedigreed but misunderstood development of the Mercator projection and its connection to the integral of the secant function. We discuss the merits and the possible pitfalls of this approach based on a teaching module with undergraduate students. The appendices contain activities that can be implemented as an enrichment activity in a Calculus course.
