Simulations Show Decreasing Carbon Stocks And Potential For Carbon Emissions In Rocky Mountain Forests Over The Next Century, Céline Boisvenue, Steven W. Running Jul 2010

Simulations Show Decreasing Carbon Stocks And Potential For Carbon Emissions In Rocky Mountain Forests Over The Next Century, Céline Boisvenue, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Climate change has altered the environment in which forests grow, and climate change models predict more severe alterations to come. Forests have already responded to these changes, and the future temperature and precipitation scenarios are of foremost concern, especially in the mountainous western United States, where forests occur in the dry environments that interface with grasslands. The objective of this study was to understand the trade-offs between temperature and water controls on these forested sites in the context of available climate projections. Three temperature and precipitation scenarios from IPCC AR4 AOGCMs ranging in precipitation levels were input to the process …

Halldor Laxness And The Latter-Day Saints: The Story Behind The Novel Paradisarheimt, Fred E. Woods

BYU Studies

On the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Halldor Laxness's Mormon-themed novel Paradisarheimt (Paradise Reclaimed), BYU professor Fred E. Woods tells the story of how the Nobel-prize winning author became interested in the topic of Mormon Icelandic immigration to Utah. Woods shares correspondence between Laxness and Latter-day Saints, thus portraying the friendships that developed as Laxness visited Utah for book research and continued to write to his friends for more information. Woods compares stories of real Icelandic Mormon immigrants with the fictional characters in Laxness's novel. At the time of the book's publication, some Mormon readers felt that …

Pairing Educational Robotics With Geospatial Technologies In Informal Learning Environments, Bradley Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk Jul 2010

Pairing Educational Robotics With Geospatial Technologies In Informal Learning Environments, Bradley Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

Educational robotics, when paired with geospatial technologies and taught in an informal educational environment, can be an innovative strategy to teach youth about science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) concepts. However, little is known about the true effects on conceptual knowledge and associated attitudes. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the shortterm effects of a series of five-day summer robotics/geospatial camps held in Nebraska. The study was conducted at six diverse locations and consisted of a five-day 4-H camp experience. The study examined the experiences of 147 youth between the ages of 10 and 15. A pretestposttest quasi-experimental design …

Marginality, Mayhem And Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries Of Masculinity And Urban Violence In Contemporary Mexican And Brazilian Film, Jeremy Lehnen Jul 2010

Marginality, Mayhem And Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries Of Masculinity And Urban Violence In Contemporary Mexican And Brazilian Film, Jeremy Lehnen

Latin American Studies ETDs

Marginality, Mayhem and Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries of Masculinity and Urban Violence in Contemporary Mexican and Brazilian Film is a comparative study that explores the confluence of cinematic discourse, violence, masculinity and constructions (or denial) of citizenship in present-day Latin America. My argument is that the thematization of violence and masculinity in contemporary Latin American film intercedes at a symbolic level into social relations that are increasingly mediated through images that depict what is socially permitted. This dissertation considers how film (re)structures perceptions of masculinity and its inter-linkages with cityscapes marked by social and material violence. Violence is at the …

Climate Change Impact On Agriculture: Devils Lake Basin, Andrei Kirilenko Jul 2010

Climate Change Impact On Agriculture: Devils Lake Basin, Andrei Kirilenko

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Northern Great Plains is one of the most important agricultural regionsworldwide. This is also a region expected to be heavily impacted by climate change. Thisand two other papers in this session concentrate on studying climate change impacts onwater resources of the region, and on the impacts of these changes on agriculture. Themajor focus of our interest is Devils Lake watershed in North Dakota. The watershed islocated in the Northern Great Plains, the area where intensive agriculture has caused anextreme change in land use and land cover, followed by substantial water pollution. DevilsLake is an endorheic (terminal) lake, which makes it …

Integrated Agricultural System Modeling Using Oms 3: Component Driven Stream Flow And Nutrient Dynamics Simulations, James C. Ascough Ii, Olaf David, P. Krause, Manfred Fink, S. Kralisch, H. Kipka, Marcel Wetzel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This study reports on the integration of the European J2K-S model (a component-based system for fully distributed simulation of water balance and N dynamics in large watersheds) under the Object Modeling System 3 (OMS3) environmental modeling framework and subsequent evaluation of OMS3/J2K-S performance on the Cedar Creek Watershed (CCW) in northeastern Indiana, USA. Uncalibrated model performance for daily and monthly stream flow response was assessed using Nash- Sutcliffe model efficiency (ENS) and percent bias (PBIAS) model evaluation coefficients. Simulations for nitrogen (N) loadings to Cedar Creek were also performed; however, the OMS3/J2K-S N dynamics sub-model is still undergoing testing so …

Urban Shrinkage: A Vicious Circle For Residents And Infrastructure? - Coupling Agent-Based Models On Residential Location Choice And Urban Infrastructure Development, Nina Schwarz, Dagmar Haase Jul 2010

Urban Shrinkage: A Vicious Circle For Residents And Infrastructure? - Coupling Agent-Based Models On Residential Location Choice And Urban Infrastructure Development, Nina Schwarz, Dagmar Haase

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

One of the challenges of simulating urban regions in Europe is urban shrinkage, where de-industrialisation, massive population losses and ageing cause housing vacancies in cities. These vacancies decrease efficiency in urban infrastructure and result in problems related to under-utilisation. Investigating the relationship between residential location choice and infrastructure-related decisions can foster urban planning related to shrinkage. This paper presents a coupled simulation of two agent-based models: a) Resident agents belong to different household types. They decide upon their location and move to existing flats or houses. For this, they consider aspects such as their preference for certain urban structural types …

A Crane Movement Model Parameterized Using Portable Radar For Evaluating Response To Wind Energy Development, Eileen M. Kirsch, Richard S. Sojda, Robert H. Diehl, Manuel Suarez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has an interest in understanding how sandhill and whooping cranes (Grus canadensis and G. americana, respectively) use habitats in the landscape surrounding Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, USA. The refuge and adjacent state wildlife management areas contain the largest cattail marsh in the lower 48 states, providing important habitat for sandhill and whooping cranes, especially for roosting and staging for migration. Important feeding habitats are found in adjacent agricultural fields, small wetlands, and grasslands. It is in these feeding habitats that commercial wind turbines have been erected. We are studying crane movements in …

An Agent Based Model Of Climate Change And Conflict Among Pastoralists In East Africa, Atesmachew B. Hailegiorgis, William G. Kennedy, Mark Rouleau, Jeffrey K. Bassett, Mark Coletti, Gabriel C. Balan, Tim Gulden

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We present an agent-based model of human-environment interaction and conflict in East Africa using the MASON agent-based simulation environment. Our model focuses on the complex interaction of pastoral groups with their environment and other emerging external actors. Our model supports the observation that increased seasonal rainfall variability and droughts create tremendous stress on pastoralists groups and challenges their long-term resilience and adaptive response mechanisms.

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Lake Winnipeg is Canada’s 6th largest freshwater lake and is subject to an increasing rate of eutrophication as a result of nonpoint source pollution from numerous sources including farms and municipal wastewaters. We examine scenarios designed to compare the relative effects of wetland restoration and position on modelled nutrient loadings to Lake Winnipeg from a pilot watershed in the Lake’s Basin, the La Salle River watershed. Scenarios were examined using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). SWAT is a well-known watershed scale hydrologic model designed to assess non-point source pollution loadings to contributing streams across a wide range of …

A Comparison Of Fuzzy, Bayesian And Weighted Average Formulations Of An In-Stream Habitat Suitability Model., C. J. Brookes, Vikas Kumar, S. N. Lane

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Three variations of a simple in-stream habitat suitability model were implementedand the effect on output for one organism at 22 sites on one short section of a river wasexamined. The model uses only two factors, depth and velocity, to calculate quality and a thirdfactor, width to quantify utility. The implementations were based on 3 multi-criteria evaluationapproaches: Weighted Average, Fuzzy Sets and Bayesian probability. There was broadagreement between the formulations but important differences in detail. The model outputsindicate that uncertainty arising from model formulation is significant and can have a bearingon planning decisions. There is a complex interaction between the formulations …

The Reluctance Of Korean Education In The Face Of Change, Paul Jambor Jul 2010

The Reluctance Of Korean Education In The Face Of Change, Paul Jambor

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

It should first be stated that there are many bright students in the Korean educational system and Korea has produced great waves in the information technology fields and the Korean economy has leaped in bounds from the days of poverty and despair, following the Korean War, to the present days when Korea has proven itself to be a world class country with a world class economy. Nevertheless, the Korean system of education has seemingly lagged behind the advances the Korean information technology and semiconductor industries have enjoyed.

Climate Refugees Require Relocation Assistance: Guaranteeng Adequate Land Assets Through Treaties Based On The National Adaptation Programmes Of Action, Holly D. Lange Jul 2010

Climate Refugees Require Relocation Assistance: Guaranteeng Adequate Land Assets Through Treaties Based On The National Adaptation Programmes Of Action, Holly D. Lange

Washington International Law Journal

Rising ocean levels in the South Pacific threaten thousands of inhabitants with displacement. Many of these small Pacific island states lack available land to internally accommodate displaced individuals. Thus, thousands of “climate refugees” will be forced to move off their island homes and, without provisions of adequate land rights, will most likely end up in refugee camps in other countries. Climate change exemplifies an inherently global challenge. Developed countries produce disproportionately more greenhouse gases, and developing countries lack resources to adequately respond to climatic displacement. International treaties establish a legal responsibility to assist developing states adapt to climate change. However, …

Battlestar Galactica, a television series that aired on the SyFy Channel from 2003 to 2009, tells the story of the Twelve Colonies, a human society whose home planets have been destroyed by a race of robots, the Cylons. These androids, originally created by mankind as a slave workforce, have at the moment of their revolution evolved to become physically indistinguishable from humans, and, after they turn against their creators, as the Internet Movie Data Base tag line puts it: "The fight to save humanity rages on." While the series presents itself as a traditional science fiction narrative with the …

U.S.-China Maritime Confidence Building Paradigms, Precedents, And Prospects, David Griffiths Jul 2010

U.S.-China Maritime Confidence Building Paradigms, Precedents, And Prospects, David Griffiths

CMSI Red Books

As two great powers that will influence much of the immediate future of our small and vulnerable planet, China and the United States are in a marriage of sorts—united for the purpose of living together, in the words of the Oxford English Dictionary. Like it or not, the two societies depend on each other. Environmental degradation, social unrest, economic problems, or pandemic outbreak in one must inevitably affect the other. Both must be active contributors to a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable, global community. Both governments emphasize their commitment to a positive and constructive mutual engagement. At sea, however, that engagement is …

Human Rights Abusers, The Human Rights Council, And The Un, James Pattison Jul 2010

Human Rights Abusers, The Human Rights Council, And The Un, James Pattison

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The predecessor to the Human Rights Council, the Commission on Human Rights, had several notable failings. These included double standards in the selection of which states were to be subject to scrutiny, membership of the Commission by states notable for their egregious human rights records, and the shielding of the P5 members of the Security Council and their allies from criticism. The Human Rights Council, it was hoped, would avoid these flaws and, in doing so, push human rights further up the UN agenda. For instance, the General Assembly Resolution A/RES/60/251, which set up the Council, claimed that the Council’s …
