Precision Measurement Of The Hydrogen-Deuterium 1s-2s Isotope Shift, Christian G. Parthey, Arthur Matveev, Janis Alnis, Randolf Pohl, Thomas Udem, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Nikolai Kolachevsky, Theodor W. Hänsch

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measuring the hydrogen-deuterium isotope shift via two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition, we obtain 670994334606(15) Hz. This is a 10-times improvement over the previous best measurement confirming its frequency value. a calculation of the difference of the mean square charge radii of deuterium and hydrogen results in r2d-r2 p=3.82007(65)fm2, a more than twofold improvement compared to the former value.

Energy Harvesting From Vibration With Alternate Scavenging Circuitry And Tapered Cantilever Beam, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Piezoelectric transducers are increasingly being used to harvest energy from environmental vibrations in order to either power remote sensors or charge batteries that power the sensors. In this paper, a new voltage compensation scheme for high-voltage-based (> 100 V ) energy harvesting is introduced, and its fundamental concepts, as well as the operation details, are elaborated. This scheme, when applied to the voltage inversion method [synchronized switch harvesting on inductor (SSHI)], provides an increase of over 14% in harvested power when compared to the parallel inversion method (parallel SSHI) alone and more than 50% in the case of series inversion …

Novel Dynamic Representation And Control Of Power Systems With Facts Devices, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

FACTS devices have been shown to be useful in damping power system oscillations. However, in large power systems, the FACTS control design is complex due to the combination of differential and algebraic equations required to model the power system. In this paper, a new method to generate a nonlinear dynamic representation of the power network is introduced to enable more sophisticated control design. Once the new representation is obtained, a back stepping methodology for the UPFC is utilized to mitigate the generator oscillations. Finally, the neural network approximation property is utilized to relax the need for knowledge of the power …

Exploring Query Optimization In Programming Codes By Reducing Run-Time Execution, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Swetha Surapaneni, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Thomas Weigert Jan 2010

Exploring Query Optimization In Programming Codes By Reducing Run-Time Execution, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Swetha Surapaneni, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Thomas Weigert

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Object querying is an abstraction of operations over collections, whereas manual implementations are performed at low level which forces the developers to specify how a task must be done. Some object-oriented languages allow the programmers to express queries explicitly in the code, which are optimized using the query optimization techniques from the database domain. in this regard, Java Query Language has been developed that allows object querying and performs the query optimization at run-time. Therefore, only one problem is how to reduce the task of query optimization at run-time as much as possible within the Java Query Language system. in …

Effect Of Phosphorus On Cleavage Fracture In Κ-Carbide, N. I. Medvedeva, Ryan A. Howell, David C. Van Aken, Julia E. Medvedeva Jan 2010

Effect Of Phosphorus On Cleavage Fracture In Κ-Carbide, N. I. Medvedeva, Ryan A. Howell, David C. Van Aken, Julia E. Medvedeva

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To understand the origin of cleavage fracture which dominates in Fe(Mn)-Al-C alloys at a high phosphorus concentration, we performed first-principles study of the phosphorus effect on ideal cleavage energy and critical stress in κ-carbide, Fe3 AlC, a precipitate in the austenitic alloys. We find that phosphorus has higher solubility in Fe3 AlC than in γ-Fe and sharply reduces the cleavage characteristics of κ-carbide. We show that strong anisotropy of the Fe-P bonds in Fe3 (Al,P) C under tensile stress, leads to the appearance of large structural voids and may facilitate crack nucleation.

Middle School Teachers' Implementation Of Differentiated Instruction : The Complexity, Tonya Rae Vitense Keefer Jan 2010

Middle School Teachers' Implementation Of Differentiated Instruction : The Complexity, Tonya Rae Vitense Keefer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The needs of students in American schools are increasingly more varied as the school population becomes more diverse. Ensuring that all students receive access to an appropriate education becomes vital to our future. Differentiated instruction has been suggested as one way to provide that access. Differentiated instruction does this by using planning that explicitly addresses students' diverse interests, learning preferences, and abilities. There is plentiful information on what differentiated instruction is and what it looks like in the classroom, but there is little research on the process of teachers implementing differentiated instruction.

Over a seven-month period, this research sought to …

Creating Salsa, Claiming Salsa: Identity, Location, And Authenticity In Global Popular Music, William Guthrie Legrand Jan 2010

Creating Salsa, Claiming Salsa: Identity, Location, And Authenticity In Global Popular Music, William Guthrie Legrand

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although Latin American ethnomusicological scholarship in the last twenty years has addressed much of the Caribbean, particularly Cuba, the popular genre salsa has often been treated as a side project of scholars with other specialties. Much of previous Latin American scholarship has favored nation-based, particularly folkloric, genres, while current trends have largely moved toward either re-engaging nation-based scholarship within postmodern critical contexts or addressing reggaeton as part of the scholarly fascination with global hip-hop culture. Salsa, which has always been created, contested, and claimed. through transnational/global routes, has therefore often been marginalized through its continued association with Latin American musical …

Understanding Environmental Health Disparities Of Roma Populations In Romania, Jennifer L. Hall Jan 2010

Understanding Environmental Health Disparities Of Roma Populations In Romania, Jennifer L. Hall

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Roma are the largest and most marginalized minority group of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) with the highest number residing in Romania. Their problems and struggles are multi-faceted and deeply rooted in a long history of discrimination and stigmatization. Over the years, many strategies have been developed and implemented across CEE, yet very few studies have addressed their environmental and occupational health issues. Moreover, because the vast majority of these studies have employed quantitative methodology, they have had the unfortunate effect of dehumanizing and devaluing the Roma people through scientific reductionism.

The purpose of this study was to gain …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Remotely sensed precipitation products, due to their large areal coverage and high resolution, have been widely used to provide information on the spatiotemporal structure of rainfall. However, it is well known that these precipitation products also suffer from large uncertainties that originate from various sources. In this study, we selected radar-rainfall (RR) data corresponding to 10 warm season events over a 256 x 256 km2 domain with a data resolution of 4 x 4 km2 in space and 1 h in time. We characterized their spatial structure using correlation function, power spectrum, and moment scaling function. We then …

Model-Based Material Parameter Estimation For Terahertz Reflection Spectroscopy, Gabriel Paul Kniffin Jan 2010

Model-Based Material Parameter Estimation For Terahertz Reflection Spectroscopy, Gabriel Paul Kniffin

Dissertations and Theses

Many materials such as drugs and explosives have characteristic spectral signatures in the terahertz (THz) band. These unique signatures imply great promise for spectral detection and classification using THz radiation. While such spectral features are most easily observed in transmission, real-life imaging systems will need to identify materials of interest from reflection measurements, often in non-ideal geometries. One important, yet commonly overlooked source of signal corruption is the etalon effect - interference phenomena caused by multiple reflections from dielectric layers of packaging and clothing likely to be concealing materials of interest in real-life scenarios. This thesis focuses on the development …

Library Characterization And Static Timing Analysis Of Single-Track Circuits In Gasp, Swetha Mettala Gilla Jan 2010

Library Characterization And Static Timing Analysis Of Single-Track Circuits In Gasp, Swetha Mettala Gilla

Dissertations and Theses

Library characterization and 'Static Timing Analysis' (STA) are widely used in the design of modern CMOS integrated circuits to confirm that critical timing constraints are met. While many commercial tools are available to do timing validation using library characterization and static timing analysis, their operation depends on calculations relative to a global synchronous clock. This thesis applies timing validation to circuits from which the global synchronous clock is absent, making application of commercial tools difficult. Previous work at the University of Southern California (USC) showed how to overcome the incompatibility of commercial STA tools for asynchronous circuits. This thesis shows …

Predictors Of Family-Supportive Supervisor Behaviors: Supervisor Job Stress And Work-Family Climate, Brittany E. Sale Jan 2010

Predictors Of Family-Supportive Supervisor Behaviors: Supervisor Job Stress And Work-Family Climate, Brittany E. Sale

Dissertations and Theses

Research indicates that supportive supervision, particularly work-family specific supervision, is key to reducing employees' work-family conflict (Allen, 2001; Eby et al., 2005; Thomas & Ganster, 1995). However, little research has examined the factors that contribute to supervisors' willingness or ability to provide this support. This study examined how supervisor job stress and perceptions of work-family climate influenced employee ratings of Family-Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (FSSB) using previously-collected data from a mid-western grocery chain. It was hypothesized that supervisor job stressors would impact FSSB, supervisor perception of work-family climate would impact FSSB, and the interaction of stressors and climate would impact FSSB. …

Mitochondrial Inheritance And Natural Phenotypic Variation Among Caenorhabditis Briggsae Populations, Anna Luella Coleman-Hulbert Jan 2010

Mitochondrial Inheritance And Natural Phenotypic Variation Among Caenorhabditis Briggsae Populations, Anna Luella Coleman-Hulbert

Dissertations and Theses

Mutations affecting the mitochondrial electron transport chain cause numerous neurodegenerative disorders in humans and affect longevity in other organisms. A natural model system to study the relationship between mitochondrial function and aging within an evolutionary or population genetic context has been lacking. Natural populations of Caenorhabditis briggsae nematodes were recently found to harbor mitochondrial genetic variation with likely functional consequences for aging. Specifically, C. briggsae isolates containing high frequencies of a deletion mutation affecting the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 5 (ND5) gene were found to have reduced reproductive fitness and lifespan and elevated levels of mutagenic superoxide. Here, rates …
