The Development Of Embedded Dram Statistical Quality Models At Test And Use Conditions, Satoshi Suzuki Jan 2010

The Development Of Embedded Dram Statistical Quality Models At Test And Use Conditions, Satoshi Suzuki

Dissertations and Theses

Today, the use of embedded Dynamic Random Access Memory (eDRAM) is increasing in our electronics that require large memories, such as gaming consoles and computer network routers. Unlike external DRAMs, eDRAMs are embedded inside ASICs for faster read and write operations. Until recently, eDRAMs required high manufacturing cost. Present process technology developments enabled the manufacturing of eDRAM at competitive costs. Unlike SRAM, eDRAM exhibits retention time bit fails from defects and capacitor leakage current. This retention time fail causes memory bits to lose stored values before refresh. Also, a small portion of the memory bits are known to fail at …

Achieving Congruence: Building A Case For Implementing A District-Wide Interim Benchmark Assessment That Is Aligned With A Balanced Literacy Framework, Theodore Feller Jan 2010

Achieving Congruence: Building A Case For Implementing A District-Wide Interim Benchmark Assessment That Is Aligned With A Balanced Literacy Framework, Theodore Feller

Dissertations and Theses

For generations--and certainly for the last 30 years--proponents of traditional and progressive philosophies have argued over how best to educate our children. Although this debate is often carried out in the political and academic spheres, the difficulties created by not being able to resolve the differences between the two belief systems become blatantly clear in the pedagogy of early literacy. On the one hand, traditionalists argue for a direct and explicit instructional methodology, and on the other hand, progressives advocate for Whole Language or Balanced Literacy instruction. The classroom often becomes a battlefield as advocates of these opposing schooling paradigms …

Dissertations and Theses

Over 200 million dental restorations are performed each year in America. A dental restoration require a strong bonding of restoration to tooth structure and relies on the dental adhesive to create this mechanical and chemical bonding. Dental adhesion or bonding is the process of forming an adhesive joint between the composite and tooth substrate: dentin or enamel. Clinical problems such as microleakage at the restoration tooth interface, influx of fluids, or bacteria growth at the cavity wall can be prevented with adhesives that obtain a more intimate bonding. Longevity of the restoration can be enhanced by the adhesive that creates …

Cyclic Behavior Of Screen Grid Insulated Concrete Form Components, Carl Scott Werner Jan 2010

Cyclic Behavior Of Screen Grid Insulated Concrete Form Components, Carl Scott Werner

Dissertations and Theses

The principle of sustainability in the built environment has become much more significant in the past decade, resulting in a push to develop building systems that are more energy efficient, durable, and use fewer natural resources. For residential and light commercial buildings, insulated concrete forms (ICF) have enjoyed increasing popularity for their ability to meet these new demands. ICFs are a stay-in-place concrete formwork system for building structural walls that are also highly insulated, among other benefits. Screen-grid ICFs (SGICF) are a small subset of ICFs that tend to use less concrete than standard ICFs and are sometimes made of …

Mishima Yukio premiered the play Rokumeikan in 1956 and published it in 1957. For more than half a century, this play has been praised as one of the finest Japanese plays in the Post-War period. Rokumeikan is a multi-act tragic melodrama, set in 1886 (Meiji Period) in the Rokumeikan building. The play intertwines complex political cabals, intense loves and hatreds, and multiple deceptions embodying the conflict between political power and love. This essay explores the reasons why Rokumeikan has maintained its popularity over its fifty year long performance history and examines the critical reception of the play. My analysis of …

Transformative Teacher Evaluation: Self Evaluation For High Performing Teachers, Carla Ann Sosanya-Tellez Jan 2010

Transformative Teacher Evaluation: Self Evaluation For High Performing Teachers, Carla Ann Sosanya-Tellez

Dissertations and Theses

Public schools are in crisis, as educators and legislators seek to provide high quality education to diverse students in a measurement-driven environment. The public educator's moral imperative is to assure that all children are literate when they leave school so they can thrive in our democracy (Dewey, 1944; Freire, 1998a; Giroux & Giroux, 2004). Yet, the achievement gap persists, as poor African-American and Latino students under-perform as compared to white middle-class students (Ladson-Billings & Tate, 1995). Additionally, public school teachers are predominately middle-class and White, while they teach increasingly diverse children of poverty. In legislation, student assessment, teacher licensure, and …

Recently veterans have begun to come forward in larger numbers to speak out against the current wars and have self-identified as members of peace movements. The purpose of this research project was to explore veterans' understandings of the peace movement and their involvement in veterans' peace movement organizations. This study hoped to answer the following questions: 1) How …

Limitation Riders In The Postreform House: A Test Of Procedural Cartel And Conditional Party Government Theories, Jessica Scott Tollestrup Jan 2010

Limitation Riders In The Postreform House: A Test Of Procedural Cartel And Conditional Party Government Theories, Jessica Scott Tollestrup

Dissertations and Theses

The theoretical debate over the ability of parties and leaders in the House of Representatives to influence legislative decision-making is at the center of much of the literature on Congress. On the one hand, the Procedural Cartel perspective argues that while the tools used by the majority party leadership to assure the triumph of its preferences may vary depending on the institutional context, the basic ability of the leadership to impact legislative outcomes remains consistent. In contrast, Conditional Party Government (CPG) theory posits that any power the majority party and its leadership possesses over legislative decision-making is directly conditioned upon …

Globalization; But Under What Conditions? -- The Case Of The E.U., Michaelangelo Anastasiou

Dissertations and Theses

The present study explores the relationship between trust placed in national institutions and opinion of globalization. A secondary data analysis is conducted using data collected by the European Commission in a 2004 Eurobarometer survey of European Union (EU) citizens on various issues regarding the EU, globalization and national challenges. A prominent theme in the literature is that, in recent times, globalization has had the effect of compromising the sovereignty of nation-states. This has generated a backlash of nationalistic attitudes wherein globalization is posited in opposition to the nation-state. This surge in nationalism has reinforced a culture wherein any external force …

Investigation Of Speech Samples From Typically Developing Preschool Age Children: A Comparison Of Single Words And Imitated Sentences Elicited With The Paba-E, Matthew William Olsen Jan 2010

Investigation Of Speech Samples From Typically Developing Preschool Age Children: A Comparison Of Single Words And Imitated Sentences Elicited With The Paba-E, Matthew William Olsen

Dissertations and Theses

Assessment of speech sound production in young children provides the basis for diagnosis and treatment of speech sound disorders. Standardized single-word articulation tests are typically used for identification of speech sound errors because they can provide an efficient means of obtaining a speech sample for analysis and comparison to same-age peers. A major criticism of single-word articulation tests is that they may not accurately reflect speech sound production abilities in conversation. Comparison of performance in single-word and conversational contexts has produced conflicting results in the available research.

The purpose of the present study was to compare speech samples obtained using …

Rashomon Comes To The Courtroom: The Adoption Of The Lay Judge System In Japan, Its Impact On Jurisprudence, And The Implications For Civic Engagement, Bryan Matthew Thompson

Dissertations and Theses

In May of 2009, Japan began formal operations of the "saiban-in seido" or "lay judge system," a quasi-jury means of criminal trial adjudication that represents the first occasion since 1943 that average Japanese citizens will be required to fulfill a role in the criminal jurisprudential process. While the lay judge system promises to affect the methods and procedures of criminal trials in Japan, recent scholarship in the United States has raised an interesting question: to what degree can the lay participatory adjudication process facilitate greater levels of civic engagement in past citizen jurists once their service has completed?

It …

Exploring School Engagement As A Protective Factor For Youth At Risk Of Joining Gangs, Lorraine M. Escribano Jan 2010

Exploring School Engagement As A Protective Factor For Youth At Risk Of Joining Gangs, Lorraine M. Escribano

Dissertations and Theses

Research on gangs has traditionally focused on identifying the risk factors associated with youth gang membership in multiple developmental domains with limited attention on examining the protective factors that may buffer youth from joining gangs (Howell & Egley, 2005). Educational and psychological research have found robust evidence that school engagement protects youth from a host of risky activities and negative outcomes (e.g., substance use, dropping out of school) and may hold promise in also protecting youth from gang involvement. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is three-fold: (1) to identify students who are at risk for gangs; (2) to …

Addressing Automated Adversaries Of Network Applications, Edward Leo Kaiser Jan 2010

Addressing Automated Adversaries Of Network Applications, Edward Leo Kaiser

Dissertations and Theses

The Internet supports a perpetually evolving patchwork of network services and applications. Popular applications include the World Wide Web, online commerce, online banking, email, instant messaging, multimedia streaming, and online video games. Practically all networked applications have a common objective: to directly or indirectly process requests generated by humans. Some users employ automation to establish an unfair advantage over non-automated users. The perceived and substantive damages that automated, adversarial users inflict on an application degrade its enjoyment and usability by legitimate users, and result in reputation and revenue loss for the application's service provider. This dissertation examines three challenges critical …

Exploring Prehistoric Salmon Subsistence In The Willamette Valley Using Zooarchaeological Records And Optimal Foraging Theory, J. Tait Elder Jan 2010

Exploring Prehistoric Salmon Subsistence In The Willamette Valley Using Zooarchaeological Records And Optimal Foraging Theory, J. Tait Elder

Dissertations and Theses

My research examines the prehistoric subsistence of native peoples of the Willamette Valley, Oregon through an analysis of the regional zooarchaeological records, and then modeling regional diet breadth. Through this analysis, I challenge commonly held stereotypes that the indigenous people of the Willamette Valley were strictly root eaters, and the basis for this claim, that salmon were not part of Native subsistence. The results of my research indicate that given the incomplete nature of the ethnohistoric record, very little can be said about expected cultural behaviors, such as salmon consumption, that appear to be absent in the Willamette Valley. In …

The Impact Of Humanitarian Photography On The Generation Of Sympathy And On Donation Behavior, Marta Barberini Jan 2010

Dissertations and Theses

This paper presents findings of an exploratory study to evaluate the impact of humanitarian photography on the generation of sympathy and donation behavior. Considering the large amount of money spent each year by charity organizations on marketing strategies, it seems crucial to shed light on the persuasive impact of images in this context. The overarching purpose of this study was to discern what impact, if any, a number of features in a photograph have on sympathetic reactions. Specifically the author examined facial expressions (sad vs. happy), eye contact vs. no eye contact and total number of subjects portrayed. Findings supported …

Visions And Voices: An Arts-Based Qualitative Study Using Photovoice To Understand The Needs And Aspirations Of Diverse Women Working In The Sex Industry, Moshoula Capous Desyllas Jan 2010

Visions And Voices: An Arts-Based Qualitative Study Using Photovoice To Understand The Needs And Aspirations Of Diverse Women Working In The Sex Industry, Moshoula Capous Desyllas

Dissertations and Theses

The ways in which sex workers have been studied and represented historically, socio-politically and academically do not take into account their voices, subjective experiences and participation in the process. Women working in the sex industry are seldom heard and their needs are consistently defined and represented by others. This contributes to the stereotyping and stigmatization of sex workers, while academic research is consistently being done on sex workers instead of with them. This study uses the arts-based research method of photovoice with individuals working in the sex industry in Portland, Oregon to understand their needs and aspirations through their own …

Efficient Encoding Of Vocalizations In The Auditory Midbrain, Lars Andreas Holmstrom Jan 2010

Efficient Encoding Of Vocalizations In The Auditory Midbrain, Lars Andreas Holmstrom

Dissertations and Theses

An important question in sensory neuroscience is what coding strategies and mechanisms are used by the brain to detect and discriminate among behaviorally relevant stimuli. To address the noisy response properties of individual neurons, sensory systems often utilize broadly tuned neurons with overlapping receptive fields at the system's periphery, resulting in homogeneous responses among neighboring populations of neurons. It has been hypothesized that progressive response heterogeneity in ascending sensory pathways is evidence of an efficient encoding strategy that minimizes the redundancy of the peripheral neural code and maximizes information throughput for higher level processing. This hypothesis has been partly supported …

Evolutionary Dynamics In Molecular Populations Of Ligase Ribozymes, Carolina Diaz Arenas Jan 2010

Evolutionary Dynamics In Molecular Populations Of Ligase Ribozymes, Carolina Diaz Arenas

Dissertations and Theses

The emergence of life depended on the ability of the first biopolymer populations to thrive and approach larger population sizes and longer sequences. The evolution of these populations likely occurred under circumstances under which Muller's Ratchet in synergism with random drift could have caused large genetic deterioration of the biopolymers. This deterioration can drive the populations to extinction unless there is a mechanism to counteract it. The effect of the mutation rate and the effective population size on the time to extinction was tested on clonal populations of B16-19 ligase ribozymes, evolved with the continuous evolution in vitro system. Populations …

Model Analysis Of The Hydrologic Response To Climate Change In The Upper Deschutes Basin, Oregon, Michael Scott Waibel Jan 2010

Model Analysis Of The Hydrologic Response To Climate Change In The Upper Deschutes Basin, Oregon, Michael Scott Waibel

Dissertations and Theses

Considerable interest lies in understanding the hydrologic response to climate change in the upper Deschutes Basin, particularly as it relates to groundwater fed streams. Much of the precipitation occurring in the recharge zone falls as snow. Consequently, the timing of runoff and recharge depend on accumulation and melting of the snowpack. Numerical modeling can provide insights into evolving hydrologic system response for resource management consideration. A daily mass and energy balance model known as the Deep Percolation Model (DPM) was developed for the basin in the 1990s. This model uses spatially distributed data and is driven with daily climate data …

Effects Of Biochar-Amended Soil On The Water Quality Of Greenroof Runoff, Deborah Aileen Beck Jan 2010

Effects Of Biochar-Amended Soil On The Water Quality Of Greenroof Runoff, Deborah Aileen Beck

Dissertations and Theses

As the numbers of installed greenroofs continue to grow internationally, designing greenroof growing media to reduce the amount of nutrients in the stormwater runoff is becoming essential. Biochar, a carbon-net-negative soil amendment, has been promoted for its ability to retain nutrients in soils and increase soil fertility. This study evaluated the effect on water quality of greenroof runoff after adding biochar to a typical extensive greenroof soil. Prototype greenroof trays with and without 7% biochar (by weight) were planted with sedum or ryegrass, with barren soil trays for controls. The greenroof trays were subjected to two sequential 2.9 in/hr rainfall …

Design Space Analysis And A Novel Routing Agorithm For Unstructured Networks-On-Chip, Neha Parashar Jan 2010

Design Space Analysis And A Novel Routing Agorithm For Unstructured Networks-On-Chip, Neha Parashar

Dissertations and Theses

Traditionally, on-chip network communication was achieved with shared medium networks where devices shared the transmission medium with only one device driving the network at a time. To avoid performance losses, it required a fast bus arbitration logic. However, a single shared bus has serious limitations with the heterogeneous and multi-core communication requirements of today's chip designs. Point-to-point or direct networks solved some of the scalability issues, but the use of routers and of rather complex algorithms to connect nodes during each cycle caused new bottlenecks. As technology scales, the on-chip physical interconnect presents an increasingly limiting factor for performance and …

Identifying Best Quality Management Practices For Achieving Quality And Innovation Performance In The Forest Products Industry, Scott A. Leavengood Jan 2010

Identifying Best Quality Management Practices For Achieving Quality And Innovation Performance In The Forest Products Industry, Scott A. Leavengood

Dissertations and Theses

In many business sectors today, the focus on quality as a competitive tool is being replaced by a focus on innovation. Research exploring connections between quality management, innovation, and company performance suggests that quality is 'necessary but insufficient' in today's business environment. In short, the question facing managers, particularly those in small firms, is how to adapt their quality management practices to achieve innovation performance in addition to quality performance. To answer this question, West Coast U.S. forest products manufacturers were surveyed about quality management practices and performance with respect to both quality and innovation. Quality management practices were assessed …

Functional Separation Of Multimodular Type I Pks Polypeptides By Utilizing Matched Docking Domains From A Heterologous Pks System, John Kam Yan Jan 2010

Functional Separation Of Multimodular Type I Pks Polypeptides By Utilizing Matched Docking Domains From A Heterologous Pks System, John Kam Yan

Dissertations and Theses

Bacterial type I modular polyketide synthases (PKS) are large multifunctional enzyme systems responsible for the biosynthesis of complex polyketide natural products such as erythromycin, pikromycin, and borrelidin. Type I systems are comprised of a loading module which generally selects an appropriate acyl group starter unit, and multiple discrete extension modules, responsible for each single round of acyl group incorporation into the final polyketide core structure. These modules can exist naturally as either single discrete polypeptides, such as modules 5 and 6 from the pikromycin PKS (PikA3 and PikA4 respectively), or as multimodular polypeptides fused together by short intrapolypeptide linkers such …

The Effects Of Animals On Children's Development Of Perspective-Taking Abilities, Mika Maruyama Jan 2010

The Effects Of Animals On Children's Development Of Perspective-Taking Abilities, Mika Maruyama

Dissertations and Theses

Although attention to the effects of child-animal interactions on children's development has increased in the last three decades, developmental psychology has not attended to the importance of the effects of animals on children's development. There is a need to consider the possible impacts of animals as significant social partners for children's socioemotional development. The current study, through survey questionnaires and interview methods, investigated whether interacting with animals, especially when children have responsibilities for the welfare of pets and perhaps have formed strong attachments with pets, will promote children's socio-emotional development, specifically their abilities to take the perspective of others. Sixty-five …
