Three Perspectives On Standards: Positivism, Panopticism, And Intersubjectivism, Cheu-Jey Lee Jan 2010

Three Perspectives On Standards: Positivism, Panopticism, And Intersubjectivism, Cheu-Jey Lee

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Perhaps no other words occur more frequently than standards in today’s discourse on educational reform. There is much debate about standards. Instead of taking sides on the debate, this paper argues that the problem with standards does not lie so much in standards themselves as in how they are viewed by those who make them and those who are held accountable by them. Specifically, what we believe about standards has a tremendous impact on the role standards play in our practices. This paper examines standards critically from the perspectives of positivism, panopticism, and intersubjectivism. Depending on the perspective taken, standards …

Cheating Perceptions And Prevalence Across Academic Settings, Kelly Honz, Kenneth A. Kiewra, Ya-Shu Yang Jan 2010

Cheating Perceptions And Prevalence Across Academic Settings, Kelly Honz, Kenneth A. Kiewra, Ya-Shu Yang

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study investigated high school students’ perceptions of cheating and its prevalence. Students were administered the Academic Honesty Survey to determine their perceptions and prevalence of cheating across three academic settings: tests, homework, and report writing. Overall, students had traditional perceptions of what constitutes cheating. Despite these perceptions, most students cheated. In addition, cheating perceptions and prevalence varied across academic settings. Perceptions and prevalence declined going from test to homework to report writing settings. Three other interesting patterns emerged. First, cheating was tied to effort. Cheating actions that still required students to exert effort were viewed as less dishonest than …

Keeping Native Languages In Esl Class: Accounting For The Role Beliefs Play Toward Mastery, Michael S. Yough, Ming Fang Jan 2010

Keeping Native Languages In Esl Class: Accounting For The Role Beliefs Play Toward Mastery, Michael S. Yough, Ming Fang

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Students’ native language is a valuable resource in the English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. Use of native languages may increase a student’s sense of efficacy for learning English by: (a) facilitating vocabulary acquisition, (b) aiding learners in comprehension, (c) encouraging self-regulation, (d) making routines and explanations clear so as to direct attention and free up working memory for tasks in English, (e) modeling communication in environments where students may be reluctant to initiate conversation, and (f) setting the tone in situations where students have come to view English as exceedingly difficult.

Interdisciplinary Curricular Conversations Examining Arts And Academics: Teacher Implementation And Student Outcomes, Angela Miller, Delane Bender-Slack, Robert Burroughs Jan 2010

Interdisciplinary Curricular Conversations Examining Arts And Academics: Teacher Implementation And Student Outcomes, Angela Miller, Delane Bender-Slack, Robert Burroughs

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This qualitative study examined the integration of arts and academic curricula at a performing arts school by focusing on the curriculum as it is understood and perceived by the students. The study centered on five students at a performing arts magnet school who were chosen based upon contrasts in their arts classes in order to represent a range of participation in the various performing arts. Findings indicated that students were unable to recognize the integration of arts in the teaching materials, strategies, and interaction in academic courses. Results also indicated that the more teacher-centered instructional materials and pedagogical strategies utilized …

Internationalization Of Manufacturing Smes In Central And Eastern Europe: Which Capabilities Matter? , Aldas Kriauciunas, Audra I. Mockaitis, Mona Bahl

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Although small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been a major source of economic growth in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), the capabilities underlying their expansion into international markets have received very little attention in the literature. We hypothesize that the level of internationalization will be positively related with knowledge orientation, cost –orientation and managerial IB orientation of a CEE based SME. Using data from 90 manufacturing SMEs from six CEE countries, we examine the impact of different capabilities on the level of internationalization. The results indicate that low-cost manufacturing capabilities and pro-active managerial orientation towards international operations are positively associated …

Heat Transfer In Trapezoidal Microchannels Of Various Aspect Ratios, John P. Mchale, S V. Garimella Jan 2010

Heat Transfer In Trapezoidal Microchannels Of Various Aspect Ratios, John P. Mchale, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Heat transfer in the thermal entrance region of trapezoidal microchannels is investigated for hydrodynamically fully developed, single-phase, laminar flow with no-slip conditions. Three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed using a finite-volume approach for trapezoidal channels with a wide range of aspect ratios. The sidewall angles of 54.7 degrees and 45 degrees are chosen to correspond to etch-resistant planes in the crystal structure of silicon. Local and average Nusselt numbers are reported as a function of dimensionless length and aspect ratio. The effect of Prandtl number upon the thermal entrance condition is explored. The fully developed friction factors are computed and correlated …

Using A Student-Generated Survey To Inform Planning For A User-Focused Learning Commons, Sharon A. Weiner, John Weiner

Libraries Research Publications

A master’s comprehensive University is planning a learning commons to support undergraduate learning. The planning process included a literature review, site visits to commons, consultations with experts in the field, discussions with campus specialists, and surveys of patrons. The literature reports two primary forms of data gathering for learning commons: interview/observation and purposive surveys. This report describes the findings of a survey conducted to determine students’ perceptions of services relevant in learning commons. The findings indicated that the students wanted help with their information processing needs.

American Studies À La Française: An Introduction To Doctoral Dissertations In American Studies 1971-2005 For American Students, Jean-Pierre Herubel, Anne L. Buchanan

Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

As globalization continues to influence the world of information and undergraduate learning, subjects pertaining to the United States as a country and complex culture emerge as interests globally, so much so that American Studies programs in other countries offer tantalizing opportunities to gain other perspectives and knowledge about the United States as a distinctively American experience. As American students study in American Studies programs, they may require or find useful, other approaches to American subjects in their research. A particularly interesting possibility for students and scholars is to avail themselves of French research, specifically doctoral dissertations in American studies. Since …

Teaching With Spirit: Freire, Dialogue, And Spirituality In The Composition Classroom, Justin Vidovic Jan 2010

Teaching With Spirit: Freire, Dialogue, And Spirituality In The Composition Classroom, Justin Vidovic

Wayne State University Dissertations

This ethnographic study examines the role of spirituality in the composition teaching process and in Paolo Freire's dialogic education specifically. Work to acquire some aspects of spiritual "Discourse," as the term is defined by James Gee, is needed in order to make this spiritual foundation visible and practicable. Through a series of ethnographic narratives of a classroom, this study demonstrates the necessity of spiritual work on the part of the teacher to develop the mind frame and skill set necessary for dialogic pedagogy. A series of workshop activities based on Freire's spiritual prerequisites for dialogic education are proposed.

From Baby Formula To Solid Food: How The Influence Of Media Has Nourished Children's Literature, Nicole L. Wilson Jan 2010

From Baby Formula To Solid Food: How The Influence Of Media Has Nourished Children's Literature, Nicole L. Wilson

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation juxtaposes children's literature and media and investigates the resulting influence of media on literature. Jay Bolter and Richard Grusin's ideas regarding Remediation in conjunction with Henry Jenkins ideas regarding Convergence Culture provide the framework for my ideas regarding media and their roles in children's literature.

One way media influence children's literature is through the realm of nostalgia. Adults reflect on their childhoods and the literature they encountered. Their desires to recreate the truths they recall learning from literature lead them to produce reflective and restorative remediations of texts that allow modern youths new opportunities with canonical texts.

Policy and practice regarding in-grade level retention and their effects on high school graduation rates and successful student academic outcomes have currently assumed great importance in the education reform debate. Further, the effectiveness of our public schools and the achievement of our students have implications that can affect individuals and the communities in which they live. Now, more than ever, individual economic success and economic growth depend crucially on academic achievement and human capital. The purpose of this research …

Composition Under Review: A Genre Analysis Of Book Reviews In Composition, 1939-2007, Sandra Wald Valensky

Wayne State University Dissertations

Although reviews have been a part of two flagship composition journals, College English and College Composition and Communication throughout their publication histories, little attention has been shown to them in any full length research studies. This dissertation study provides a historical genre analysis of reviews to illustrate the role of reviews in reflecting and contributing to composition's struggle for full disciplinary status.

Methodologically, this mixed methods study uses historical analysis, genre analysis, and an interview study to investigate reviews and their functions in the field of composition. A corpus of 90 reviews, 45 from each journal, was analyzed from 1939 …

Jonson And Women; Or How One Man's Insistence On His Own Artistic Theory Challenges Dramatic Practices And Views Of His Own Gender Representations On The Elizabethan Stage, Tara Jean Hayes Jan 2010

Jonson And Women; Or How One Man's Insistence On His Own Artistic Theory Challenges Dramatic Practices And Views Of His Own Gender Representations On The Elizabethan Stage, Tara Jean Hayes

Wayne State University Dissertations

Literary scholars consider Jonson's treatment of women "uninspiring" and "misogynistic." Surprisingly enough, however, there are no studies of Jonson's women to verify this categorization. This dissertation addresses the oversight, analyzing the female characters in the plays Jonson wrote during the Elizabethan period and revealing what prevailing scholarship has missed in Jonson's work: his individuated and layered characterizations of women, his playful use of gender and use of playful gender, his destabilization of gender as an identity category. With each play and each female character Jonson created as guides, I dismantle the standard consensus on Jonson and women and challenge the …
