American Studies À La Française: An Introduction To Doctoral Dissertations In American Studies 1971-2005 For American Students, Jean-Pierre Herubel, Anne L. Buchanan

Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

As globalization continues to influence the world of information and undergraduate learning, subjects pertaining to the United States as a country and complex culture emerge as interests globally, so much so that American Studies programs in other countries offer tantalizing opportunities to gain other perspectives and knowledge about the United States as a distinctively American experience. As American students study in American Studies programs, they may require or find useful, other approaches to American subjects in their research. A particularly interesting possibility for students and scholars is to avail themselves of French research, specifically doctoral dissertations in American studies. Since …

Information Literacy Beyond The Library: The National Forum On Information Literacy, Sharon A. Weiner, Lana W. Jackman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The purpose of this column is to highlight information literacy activities that are occurring in organizations and institutions outside of libraries. Academic libraries have done much to advance information literacy in postsecondary institutions. Yet, much activity is also occurring outside of academic libraries in relation to information literacy. This column will feature some of those organizations and activities so that academic librarians may share information with them and develop new partnerships that will further advance the goals of information literacy.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital patients recovering from critical illness on general floors often receive insulin therapy based on protocols designed for patients admitted directly to general floors. The objective of this study is to compare glycemic control and insulin dosing in patients recovering from critical illness and those without prior critical illness. METHODS: Medical record review of blood glucose measurements and insulin dosing in 25 patients under general ward care while transitioning from the intensive care unit (transition group) and 25 patients admitted directly to the floor (direct floor group). RESULTS: Average blood glucose did not differ significantly between groups (transition group …

Teaching With Spirit: Freire, Dialogue, And Spirituality In The Composition Classroom, Justin Vidovic Jan 2010

Teaching With Spirit: Freire, Dialogue, And Spirituality In The Composition Classroom, Justin Vidovic

Wayne State University Dissertations

This ethnographic study examines the role of spirituality in the composition teaching process and in Paolo Freire's dialogic education specifically. Work to acquire some aspects of spiritual "Discourse," as the term is defined by James Gee, is needed in order to make this spiritual foundation visible and practicable. Through a series of ethnographic narratives of a classroom, this study demonstrates the necessity of spiritual work on the part of the teacher to develop the mind frame and skill set necessary for dialogic pedagogy. A series of workshop activities based on Freire's spiritual prerequisites for dialogic education are proposed.

From Baby Formula To Solid Food: How The Influence Of Media Has Nourished Children's Literature, Nicole L. Wilson Jan 2010

From Baby Formula To Solid Food: How The Influence Of Media Has Nourished Children's Literature, Nicole L. Wilson

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation juxtaposes children's literature and media and investigates the resulting influence of media on literature. Jay Bolter and Richard Grusin's ideas regarding Remediation in conjunction with Henry Jenkins ideas regarding Convergence Culture provide the framework for my ideas regarding media and their roles in children's literature.

One way media influence children's literature is through the realm of nostalgia. Adults reflect on their childhoods and the literature they encountered. Their desires to recreate the truths they recall learning from literature lead them to produce reflective and restorative remediations of texts that allow modern youths new opportunities with canonical texts.

The Determinants Of Student Achievement And High School Completion In Michigan, Cleo Michele Moody

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACT

By

Cleo M. Moody

December 2010

Advisor: Dr. Michael Addonizio

Major: Educational Leadership and Policy Studies

Degree: Doctor of Education

Policy and practice regarding in-grade level retention and their effects on high school graduation rates and successful student academic outcomes have currently assumed great importance in the education reform debate. Further, the effectiveness of our public schools and the achievement of our students have implications that can affect individuals and the communities in which they live. Now, more than ever, individual economic success and economic growth depend crucially on academic achievement and human capital. The purpose of this research …

Composition Under Review: A Genre Analysis Of Book Reviews In Composition, 1939-2007, Sandra Wald Valensky

Wayne State University Dissertations

Although reviews have been a part of two flagship composition journals, College English and College Composition and Communication throughout their publication histories, little attention has been shown to them in any full length research studies. This dissertation study provides a historical genre analysis of reviews to illustrate the role of reviews in reflecting and contributing to composition's struggle for full disciplinary status.

Methodologically, this mixed methods study uses historical analysis, genre analysis, and an interview study to investigate reviews and their functions in the field of composition. A corpus of 90 reviews, 45 from each journal, was analyzed from 1939 …

Jonson And Women; Or How One Man's Insistence On His Own Artistic Theory Challenges Dramatic Practices And Views Of His Own Gender Representations On The Elizabethan Stage, Tara Jean Hayes Jan 2010

Jonson And Women; Or How One Man's Insistence On His Own Artistic Theory Challenges Dramatic Practices And Views Of His Own Gender Representations On The Elizabethan Stage, Tara Jean Hayes

Wayne State University Dissertations

Literary scholars consider Jonson's treatment of women "uninspiring" and "misogynistic." Surprisingly enough, however, there are no studies of Jonson's women to verify this categorization. This dissertation addresses the oversight, analyzing the female characters in the plays Jonson wrote during the Elizabethan period and revealing what prevailing scholarship has missed in Jonson's work: his individuated and layered characterizations of women, his playful use of gender and use of playful gender, his destabilization of gender as an identity category. With each play and each female character Jonson created as guides, I dismantle the standard consensus on Jonson and women and challenge the …

There are two parts to socialization, informal and formal. In the United States, informal lessons of socialization come from a child's primary caretaker(s). Imagine a child growing up in this informal setting only to see the world from one perspective through that unique experience. Later the child goes into a …

An Africentric Reading Protocol: The Speculative Fiction Of Octavia Butler And Tananarive Due, Tonja Lawrence Jan 2010

An Africentric Reading Protocol: The Speculative Fiction Of Octavia Butler And Tananarive Due, Tonja Lawrence

Wayne State University Dissertations

This examination of Africentric speculative fiction (ASF) applies an Africentric reading protocol to selected works of Octavia E. Butler and Tananarive Due. Butler's Parable Series and Due's African Immortals Series are examined using seven elements of Africentric narrative specific to cultural speculative fiction. Finally, I discuss the implications of using an Africentric reading protocol as an example of cultural analysis that can be adapted to the textual analysis of culturally specific works of fiction.

Determination Of The Essential Functions Of A Conserved Cyclin, Cyclin Y, In Drosophila, Dongmei Liu Jan 2010

Determination Of The Essential Functions Of A Conserved Cyclin, Cyclin Y, In Drosophila, Dongmei Liu

Wayne State University Dissertations

The Drosophila gene CG14939 encodes a member of a highly conserved family of cyclins, the Y type cyclins, which have not been functionally characterized in any organism. Here I report the generation and phenotypic characterization of a null mutant of CG14939, which we rename Cyclin Y (CycY). I show that the null mutant, CycYE8, is homozygous lethal with most mutant animals arresting during pupal development. The mutant exhibits delayed larval growth and major developmental defects during metamorphosis. Heat shock-induced expression of CycY at different times during development resulted in variable levels of rescue, the timing …

Negotiating Implementation Of A Peace Agreement: Lessons Learned From Five Years At The Negotiating Table, Amos N. Guiora Jan 2010

Negotiating Implementation Of A Peace Agreement: Lessons Learned From Five Years At The Negotiating Table, Amos N. Guiora

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

For five years (1994-1999), I directly negotiated on-theground implementation of the Oslo Peace Process in the Gaza Strip. In my capacity as the Judge Advocate General's ("JAG") Corps Legal Advisor to the Israel Defense Forces ("IDF") Commander, Gaza Strip (1994-1997), I had primary responsibility for both interpretation and negotiation, first for the Gaza-Jericho Agreement and subsequently for the Interim Agreement as it applied to the Gaza Strip.

Mandatory Mediation: An Oxymoron? Examining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Court-Mandated Mediation Program, Dorcas Quek Jan 2010

Mandatory Mediation: An Oxymoron? Examining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Court-Mandated Mediation Program, Dorcas Quek

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

The introduction of the "multi-door courthouse" concept at the Pound Conference is said to have ushered in a modern era of dispute resolution within the United States. This watershed event in the history of Alternative Dispute Resolution ("ADR") spawned greater involvement by the courts in ADR. Court-annexed ADR programs were set up throughout the U.S. and legislation was enacted to encourage the use of ADR. In 1983, Rule 16 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure was amended to exhort courts to consider the "possibility of settlement" or "the use of extrajudicial procedures to resolve the dispute" at pre-trial conferences. …

Fulfilling The Washington Principles: A Proposal For Arbitration Panels To Resolve Holocaust-Era Art Claims, Jessica Mullery Jan 2010

Fulfilling The Washington Principles: A Proposal For Arbitration Panels To Resolve Holocaust-Era Art Claims, Jessica Mullery

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note highlights increased efforts to foster the restitution of Nazi-looted art, particularly on the U.S. front, during the 1990s, with emphasis on the Washington Conference in 1998. It is then contended that the Washington Principles have ultimately failed to result in the adoption of ADR mechanisms to deal with continuing Holocaust-era art claims in both the United States and abroad. The lack of both United States and international efforts subsequent to the Washington Conference, especially in failing to establish ADR mechanisms, is stressed in order to demonstrate the inadequacy of the Washington Principles. Ongoing cases and emerging litigation within …

The High Cost Of Mandatory Arbitration, Martha Nimmer Jan 2010

The High Cost Of Mandatory Arbitration, Martha Nimmer

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note traces the development of voluntary and mandatory arbitration in the United States, including the reasons for the rise in arbitration and the implications for Americans' civil rights. In voluntary arbitration, an employee agrees to arbitrate a workplace dispute instead of litigating a claim. Mandatory arbitration, in contrast, "requires an employee, as a condition of employment, to forego all access to a jury trial and use arbitration in place of a judicial forum for resolving statutory and contractual claims." The use of mandatory arbitration, particularly in employment disputes arising under Title VII, has increased dramatically since 1991 as a …

Online Dispute Resolution With China: Advantageous, But At What Cost?, Jennifer Sackin Jan 2010

Online Dispute Resolution With China: Advantageous, But At What Cost?, Jennifer Sackin

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note will discuss the use of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) between businesses and consumers in the United States (U.S.) and their counterparts in the People's Republic of China (P.R.C.). ODR is a growing, highly attractive, and arguably necessary phenomenon in the e-commerce world. It is an accommodating and useful process in that it employs online technology to provide traditional alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms via the Internet.

What Do Social Groups Have To Do With Culture? The Crucial Role Of Shared Experience, Bradley W. Bergey, Avi Kaplan Jan 2010

What Do Social Groups Have To Do With Culture? The Crucial Role Of Shared Experience, Bradley W. Bergey, Avi Kaplan

Publications and Research

In an eloquent article in American Psychologist, Cohen (2009) evoked a contentious question: What are the boundaries of culture? In this opinion piece, we argue that signifying “cultural” identities that have nominal labels as potential markers for culture may be interpreted to suggest that group membership is synonymous with cultural processes. The emphasis on nominal groupings such as religion and SES, raises the question: What do these social groups have to do with culture? We argue that a focus on shared meanings of experiences, rather than nominal social groupings, is a more appropriate and productive path toward achieving Cohen’s …

The Earliest House Sparrow Introductions To North America, Michael P. Moulton, Wendell P. Cropper Jr., Michael L. Avery, Linda E. Moulton

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Several authors have argued that three separate introductions of roughly 100 individuals were required initially to establish the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) in the Brooklyn, New York area. We argue that these claims are in error and that the actual record suggests that it is likely the initial introduction of just 16 birds in 1851 was all that was required to establish the species in New York. We further suggest that a similar level of scrutiny of historical records will reveal more examples of misinterpretations and errors, casting doubt on the validity of studies that claim propagule pressure …

Corporate Power In The Public Eye: Reassessing The Implications Of Berle’S Public Consensus Theory, Marc T. Moore, Antoine Rebérioux Jan 2010

Corporate Power In The Public Eye: Reassessing The Implications Of Berle’S Public Consensus Theory, Marc T. Moore, Antoine Rebérioux

Seattle University Law Review

We analyze Berle’s overall corporate governance project in accordance with what we see as its four core sub-themes: (A) the limitations of external market forces as a constraint on managerial decision-making power; (B) the desirability of internal (corporate) over external (market) actors in allocating corporate capital; (C) civil society and the public consensus as a continuous informal check on managerial decision-making power; and (D) shareholder democracy (as opposed to shareholder primacy or shareholder wealth maximization) as a socially instrumental institution. We seek to debunk the popular misconception that Berle’s early work was a defense of the orthodox shareholder primacy paradigm …
