Weighted Scales: American Newspaper Coverage Of The Trial Of The Major War Criminals At Nuremberg, Brian Gribben Nov 2010

Weighted Scales: American Newspaper Coverage Of The Trial Of The Major War Criminals At Nuremberg, Brian Gribben

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The Trial of the Major War Criminals at Nuremberg, the personalities associated with the trial, the verdicts rendered, and criticisms directed toward both those verdicts and the tribunal itself have generated a multitude of historical works. However, few historians have explored the American print media's coverage of the trial and even fewer have studied how a newspaper's disposition towards the trial reflected that publication's political ideology and influenced the newspaper's coverage of the trial itself. For this reason, it is the objective of this thesis to examine this neglected area, thus contributing to the scholarship of the first Nuremberg Trial. …

Milliamperage-Seconds, Kilovoltage And Patient Dose In Computed Radiography, Grace Stewart

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Radiographic techniques were applied to a human simulation pelvis phantom with evaluations of the resultant image analyzed by a designated radiologist. Results indicate that a lower patient dose is received when coupled with an increase in the tube voltage. Images analyzed demonstrated little noise variation between images, which indicates the ability to lower patient dose while maintaining quality images.

Following The Sun: Temporal Dispersion And Performance In Open Source Software Project Teams, Jorge A. Colazo, Y. Fang

School of Business Faculty Research

Dispersion in working teams has been addressed by extant research mostly in terms of the physical distance that separates team members. Recently, the focus has shifted toward an examination of a newer construct –temporal dispersion (TD). The study of TD so far has been constrained mostly to conceptual work. This study furthers the understanding of TD through an empirical investigation of its relationship with open source software (OSS) team performance. In this paper, hypotheses are developed based on coordination theory, and analyses are performed using data collected from multiple archival sources comprising 100 OSS development teams. Results indicate that TD …

Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Inverted Pendulum Robot, Kyle Reid Nov 2010

Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Inverted Pendulum Robot, Kyle Reid

Electrical Engineering

The inverted pendulum is a classical problem in controls.  The inherit instabilities in the setup make it a natural target for a control system.  Over the years it has been the benchmark for testing new and innovative control theories such as Fuzzy Logic.  During the course of this project a software fuzzy logic controller was implemented using a PIC microcontroller.  At the conclusion of the experiment an interesting realization was made about the nature of Fuzzy Logic and its applicability in the world of controls.

This paper presents a technical framework for forecasting the commercialization timeline of B3G technologies and provides insight on technology trajectories from 1G to 4G. The …

Teens, Porn, And Video Games: Is It Time To Rethink Ginsberg?, John A. Humbach Nov 2010

Teens, Porn, And Video Games: Is It Time To Rethink Ginsberg?, John A. Humbach

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This term the Supreme Court will decide whether states can constitutionally ban sales of violent videogames to minors. In reaching its decision, the Court will inevitably be faced with how to deal with Ginsberg v. New York, the case that allowed states to forbid sales of non-obscene (constitutionally "protected") pornography to persons under age 17.

The opinion in Ginsberg, if not the result, is an odd duck in First Amendment jurisprudence. It is a case that applied "rational basis" review in an area where the Supreme Court now insists on strict scrutiny. But the Court predicated its use of rational …

Should The Patient Conquer?, William M. Sage Nov 2010

Should The Patient Conquer?, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

In 1596, Robert Bainbridge carved “The patient shall conquer” into the wall of his cell in the Tower of London. It is highly unlikely that Bainbridge was an early advocate for recipients of medical care, imprisoned perhaps by a cruel sheriff denied his payroll taxes or by a domineering barber refused his fee. But its unintended meaning would immediately provoke sympathy from many health care reformers. As we confront the critical challenges of implementing national health-care reform, however, whether the patient should conquer is a legitimate topic for debate. Does the patient’s conquest risk the collapse of the health-care system …

A Descriptive Study Of The Additional Factors Needed To Transition A Troubled Church To Health, George Ray Cannon

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There is a level of frustration among pastors as they try to apply philosophical models of health to troubled churches. These churches have been labeled "troubled" because of the traumatic events they have experienced in the past. These experiences have resulted in barriers to any effort by pastor to transition the church to health. The purpose of this study is to identify the common factors/issues that a troubled church must address in order to progress in the revitalization process. This study seeks to provide a description of the factors/issues that ten troubled churches addressed as they moved toward health.

Bandwidth-Efficient Frequency-Domain Equalization For Single Carrier Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Underwater Acoustic Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Nov 2010

Bandwidth-Efficient Frequency-Domain Equalization For Single Carrier Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Underwater Acoustic Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a single carrier (SC) receiver scheme with bandwidth-efficient frequency-domain equalization (FDE) for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications employing multiple transducers and multiple hydrophones. Different from the FDE methods that perform FDE on a whole data block, the proposed algorithm implements an overlapped-window FDE by partitioning a large block into small subblocks. a decision-directed channel estimation scheme is incorporated with the overlapped-window FDE to track channel variations and improve the error performance. the proposed algorithm significantly increases the length of each block and keeps the same number of training symbols per block, hence achieving better data efficiency without performance …

Intimidation And Disruptive Behaviors In The Health Care Setting, Janelle Wade Nov 2010

Intimidation And Disruptive Behaviors In The Health Care Setting, Janelle Wade

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Intimidation and disruptive behavior can undermine patient care and cause staff dissatisfaction and turnover of professionals in the health care setting. These behaviors have been linked to patient safety issues, nurse satisfaction, nurse retention, as well as ineffective communication and collaboration (Fontaine & Gerardi, 2005; Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), 2004; Martin, 2008; Rosenstein & O'Daniel, 2005). The Joint Commission has made recommendations to reduce the incidence of disruptive behaviors. Hospitals are being asked to take responsibility, hold physicians accountable for their actions, and address workplace intimidation (ISMP, 2004; Rosenstein & O'Daniel, 2005; The Joint Commission, July 2008). Absence Of Polarity In Trail Pheromones And Use Of Sun-Compass Orientation In Leafcutter Ants Atta Cephalotes, November 2010, Marc A. Bliss Nov 2010

Absence Of Polarity In Trail Pheromones And Use Of Sun-Compass Orientation In Leafcutter Ants Atta Cephalotes, November 2010, Marc A. Bliss

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The complex social system of leafcutter ants, Atta cephalotes (Formicidae) requires a high degree of organization and efficiency to ensure the survival of the colony. This suggests that communication between individuals is both common and intricate, especially during the complicated foraging process. Chemical signaling is employed by returning, laden ants along foraging trails. This study tested for the presence of polar properties within these trail pheromones to convey orientation cues to workers. Using manipulated foraging trails of a single colony in San Luis, Costa Rica, I observed individual ant behavior at different times of day. Rather than finding a correlation …

Some Communication Complexity Results And Their Applications, Joshua E. Brody Nov 2010

Some Communication Complexity Results And Their Applications, Joshua E. Brody

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Communication Complexity represents one of the premier techniques for proving lower bounds in theoretical computer science. Lower bounds on communication problems can be leveraged to prove lower bounds in several different areas. In this work, we study three different communication complexity problems. The lower bounds for these problems have applications in circuit complexity, wireless sensor networks, and streaming algorithms. First, we study the multiparty pointer jumping problem. We present the first nontrivial upper bound for this problem. We also provide a suite of strong lower bounds under several restricted classes of protocols. Next, we initiate the study of several non-monotone …
