The Prophet Jeremiah As Theological Symbol In The Book Of Jeremiah”, Gary E. Yates Nov 2010

The Prophet Jeremiah As Theological Symbol In The Book Of Jeremiah”, Gary E. Yates

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Timothy Polk has noted, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet. 2 In fact, the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be formulated without …

Act 3: A Feel For Society (1949-1984), James Smith Allen Nov 2010

Act 3: A Feel For Society (1949-1984), James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

In Act 3, the personal story of the author is developed from birth to marriage (1949-1984), with particular attention to the historical role of cultural capital as defined by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. "A Privileged Past" considers Bourdieu’s key components of this concept in the author’s education, travel, professional training, and social networks. The central literary figure in this chapter is the sense of touch, suggesting metaphorically the critical support provided by family members, close friends, and good colleagues. It ends with the warm press of hands and lips during the author’s wedding.

A Flexible Method For Testing Independence In Two-Way Contingency Tables, Peyman Jafari, Noori Akhtar-Danesh, Zahra Bagheri

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A flexible approach for testing association in two-way contingency tables is presented. It is simple, does not assume a specific form for the association and is applicable to tables with nominal-by-nominal, nominal-by-ordinal, and ordinal-by-ordinal classifications.

Effect Of Measurement Errors On The Separate And Combined Ratio And Product Estimators In Stratified Random Sampling, Housila P. Singh, Namrata Karpe Nov 2010

Effect Of Measurement Errors On The Separate And Combined Ratio And Product Estimators In Stratified Random Sampling, Housila P. Singh, Namrata Karpe

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Separate and combined ratio, product and difference estimators are introduced for population mean μY of a study variable Y using auxiliary variable X in stratified sampling when the observations are contaminated with measurement errors. The bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimators have been derived under large sample approximation and their properties are analyzed. Generalized versions of these estimators are given along with their properties.

Use Of Two Variables Having Common Mean To Improve The Bar-Lev, Bobovitch And Boukai Randomized Response Model, Oluseun Odumade, Sarjinder Singh Nov 2010

Use Of Two Variables Having Common Mean To Improve The Bar-Lev, Bobovitch And Boukai Randomized Response Model, Oluseun Odumade, Sarjinder Singh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A new method to improve the randomized response model due to Bar-Lev, Bobovitch and Boukai (2004) is suggested. It has been observed that if two sensitive (or non sensitive) variables exist that are related to the main study sensitive variable, then those variables could be used to construct ratio type adjustments to the usual estimator of the population mean of a sensitive variable due to Bar-Lev, Bobovitch and Boukai (2004).The relative efficiency of the proposed estimators is studied with respect to the Bar-Lev, Bobovitch and Boukai (2004) models under different situations.

On Bayesian Shrinkage Setup For Item Failure Data Under A Family Of Life Testing Distribution, Gyan Prakash

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Properties of the Bayes shrinkage estimator for the parameter are studied of a family of probability density function when item failure data are available. The symmetric and asymmetric loss functions are considered for two different prior distributions. In addition, the Bayes estimates of reliability function and hazard rate are obtained and their properties are studied.

Empirical Characteristic Function Approach To Goodness Of Fit Tests For The Logistic Distribution Under Srs And Rss, M. T. Alodat, S. A. Al-Subh, Kamaruzaman Ibrahim, Abdul Aziz Jemain Nov 2010

Empirical Characteristic Function Approach To Goodness Of Fit Tests For The Logistic Distribution Under Srs And Rss, M. T. Alodat, S. A. Al-Subh, Kamaruzaman Ibrahim, Abdul Aziz Jemain

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The integral of the squares modulus of the difference between the empirical characteristic function and the characteristic function of the hypothesized distribution is used by Wong and Sim (2000) to test for goodness of fit. A weighted version of Wong and Sim (2000) under ranked set sampling, a sampling technique introduced by McIntyre (1952), is examined. Simulations that show the ranked set sampling counterpart of Wong and Sim (2000) is more powerful.

Some Facts And Figures From The Civil Justice System And The Public, Mary Stratton, James Cresswell, Scot Sehested

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The Civil Justice System and the Public (CJSP) was a collaborative research program founded on the belief that a lack of effective communication, both within the system and between the system and the public, is a significant barrier interfering with access to justice. The research involved both the public and the justice community in identifying changes in communication practice that will improve the system. The project goal was to make specific and clear recommendations for effective change that will ultimately improve access to the civil justice system by increasing the ability of the system to hear, involve, and respond to …

Student Teaching Abroad Inter-Group Outcomes: A Comparative, Country-Specific Analysis, Binbin Jiang, Debra Coffey, Robert A. Devillar, Sandra Bryan

Journal of International and Global Studies

As student diversity becomes the norm in U.S. schools, future teachers must be comprehensively prepared to work with the increasingly diverse student population through application of informed instruction that enhances general and individual student learning and outcomes. Teacher Education programs increasingly promote student teaching in international settings as a substantive step to develop teachers who embody these new competencies and instructional practices. The proposed paper presentation offers a framework and analysis highlighting similarities and differences between two groups of student teachers in Belize (2005 and 2008). Findings are comparative and relate to the type and degree of (1) cultural-, professional-, …

Collaborative Researchers Or Cold Warriors? The Origins, Activities, And Legacy Of The Smithsonian’S Institute Of Social Anthropology, A. Peter Castro

Journal of International and Global Studies

International research collaboration is increasingly popular, providing many scholarly and practical benefits. These collaborative endeavors also encounter obstacles and costs, including ones involving issues of power and professional ethics. My study seeks to widen our understanding of international collaborative social science research by examining the complex origins, diverse activities, and clouded legacy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Institute of Social Anthropology (ISA). The ISA was an innovative collaborative teaching and research program founded by Julian Steward during World War II to meet many goals, including increasing social science capacity in Latin America, expanding knowledge about contemporary cultural change, strengthening area expertise …

All Roads Lead To Najaf: Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani’S Quiet Impact On Iraq’S 2010 Ballot And Its Aftermath, Ernesto H. Braam Ll.M

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper explores the influence of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani on political developments in Iraq in the post-Saddam Husayn era and examines the discourse surrounding Sistani regarding his perceived activism or “quietism” with respect to political matters. The doctrine and statements of this most prominent Shi’i religious leader are analyzed and interpreted in the context of Iraq’s contemporary, often violent, history. Specifically, Sistani’s public statements during the run-up to the 2010 parliamentary elections and their aftermath are examined for the extent to which his voice resonates among the Iraqi people. The analysis reveals that Sistani demonstrates concern for the …

Cross-Cultural Professional Development For Teachers Within Global Imbalances Of Power, Janelle Johnson Nov 2010

Cross-Cultural Professional Development For Teachers Within Global Imbalances Of Power, Janelle Johnson

Journal of International and Global Studies

Many of the international, supranational, national, and grassroots development organizations working in the field of education channel their efforts into professional development for teachers. This type of cross-cultural educational development occurs on a massive scale, but the amount of scholarly critique and engagement are disproportionately small. As part of a larger study, this chapter on transnational teacher education draws upon development studies and critical and Indigenous decolonizing methodologies for its theoretical frame. This praxis-oriented framework is used to conduct a comparative case study analysis of two distinct models of cross-cultural professional development for teachers: a small locally based non-profit development …

Assessing Value Creation And Value Capture In Digital Business Ecosystems, Ravi S. Sharma, Francis Pereira, Narayan Ramasubbu, Margaret Tan, F. Ted Tschang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business

Interest in business modeling of technology enterprises – the activity of designing the architecture for revenues, costs, products and/or services delivery and the overall value of an enterprise – has risen to prominence with the global crossing of the Internet chasm. However, as several studies have pointed out (c.f., Osterwalder, Pigneur & Tucci, 2005; Teece 2010; Zott & Amit, 2010), the investigations of business models and their fit with the strategy of an enterprise, have received little scholarly attention. In this article we formulate a framework, called ADVISOR, for modeling the business strategies of enterprises in the Interactive Digital Media …
