Economics And Psychology: Exciting Interface In The Emerging Market Milieu, Sudhanva V. Char, Cherry Collier Nov 2010

Economics And Psychology: Exciting Interface In The Emerging Market Milieu, Sudhanva V. Char, Cherry Collier

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

The business of economics has always been the study of the dynamics of human behavior. It deals with how individuals, businesses or any group of people craft decisions concerning use of scarce resources in the hope of maximizing happiness. Economics is preoccupied with the study of decision-making under pressure of limited wherewithal, for which purpose it puts faith in rationality. However, postulating rationality for all times is a tall demand and somewhat naïve like in "animal spirits" and "irrational exuberance." Also what exactly is rational or for the greater good, is not always crystal clear. This paper surveys the Economics-Psychology …

Flying Towards The Successful Skies: The Emerging Region Multinationals, Roli Nigam, Zhan Su

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Multinationals from emerging regions have long been ignored by practitioners as well as researchers. However, with the ongoing globalization the emerging country multinationals have internationalized and emerged as strong global contenders. Their successful growth has been in spite of various complexities existing in their regions/countries due to economic backwardness along with the late comer disadvantage. Accordingly, their growing significance and participation in the global value chain makes it mandatory that they should be studied in detail and that our understanding about them should develop.

The Nano Controversy: Peasant Identities, The Land Question And Neoliberal Industrialization In Marxist West Bengal, India, Sarasij Majumder

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

As the peasant-Nano opposition suggests, urban activists and intellectuals dubbed the movement against the land acquisition and building of the factory as a complete rejection of globalization and industrialization. This paper contests these public images of the protests against land acquisition by drawing attention to certain paradoxes that the Singur case presents (which I discuss below). I address these paradoxes through an ethnography done in villages where the controversy and the protests took place for two years (2006-2008). My ethnography suggests a perspective on protests against land acquisition in India, which is different from the usual narrative of capitalist industrialization …

How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers Nov 2010

How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

We posit that contexts in emerging markets are different from developed country contexts. These contextual differences necessitate the development and deployment of unique capabilities and strategies on the parts of companies operating there. While all emerging market countries are not uniform across all of the characteristics described below, there is a great deal of commonality on these conditions within the group of emerging market countries, by virtue of their similar stages of development. Thus, companies that develop their skill sets and products/services in one emerging market are likely to more easily be able to extend them to others. Conversely, there …

Coda, James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

"A Privileged Past" closes with the author’s reflections concerning globalization’s impact on recent social conditions in the US and its collective memory, especially as they apply to higher education. Thanks to the new technologies of communication and transportation, communities of belief and identity are more extensive geographically but also more diffused temporally. As a consequence, everyone of good will, collaboratively and collectively, must work harder to establish relations beyond personal, ethnic, and national boundaries.

A Framework Of Language Use In Reference To People With Disabilities: People-First, Disability-Implicit, And Disability-First Language In A School Setting, Lindsey Therese Back Nov 2010

A Framework Of Language Use In Reference To People With Disabilities: People-First, Disability-Implicit, And Disability-First Language In A School Setting, Lindsey Therese Back

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Scientists have often overlooked the language used to refer to people with disabilities as a method for excluding them, as language reflects attitudes and potential actions (Blaska, 1993; Froschl et al, 1984; Zola, 1993) . Recent legislation illustrates efforts to prevent use of derogatory terms in state laws and regulations (New Jersey Legislature, 2010), but little research to date has explored actual linguistic references to people with disabilities. This study uses qualitative interviews with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to explore the language used to reference students with disabilities. Results offer the first framework of language used to refer to …
