Postnatal Depression: A Review Of The Literature, Shannon Pridgen, Minhnoi C. Wroble Biglan Jan 2010

Postnatal Depression: A Review Of The Literature, Shannon Pridgen, Minhnoi C. Wroble Biglan

Modern Psychological Studies

Non-psychotic Postnatal Depression (PND) is the most common complication of childbirth. Commonly misconstrued as the "baby blues", PND is, in fact, just as serious as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). PND affects 13%-15% of all mothers; if untreated, it can lead to Postnatal Psychosis, a much more severe illness that has lead to suicide and child abuse. Despite the similarities between Major Depressive Disorder and PND, the disorders are different in many aspects. Symptoms of PND are directly related to the new child and to the demands of motherhood. Unlike PND, MDD is classified specifically in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual …

Family Communication Predicts The Decisions Of Adolescents To Engage In Sexual Behaviors, Keyanna R. Turner, Connie Tang, Jessica F. Jablonski, Sara Martino Jan 2010

Family Communication Predicts The Decisions Of Adolescents To Engage In Sexual Behaviors, Keyanna R. Turner, Connie Tang, Jessica F. Jablonski, Sara Martino

Modern Psychological Studies

This study investigated whether family communication predicted adolescent decision-making about sexual behaviors, as well as gender differences in whether adolescents prefer talking with their mother or father about sex. Male and female college students (n =148) retrospectively answered questions on a survey pertaining to their family communication about sex when they were going through puberty. Results demonstrated that females reported better communication with their mothers about sex than males, and males reported better communication with their fathers about sex than females. It also was found that the better the communication with mothers, the more informed about sex the adolescents reported …

Verbal Abuse In Married Versus Non-Married Couples: The Relationship Between Perception Of Acceptability And Experience, Po Wa Wong, Brigitte K. Matthies Jan 2010

Verbal Abuse In Married Versus Non-Married Couples: The Relationship Between Perception Of Acceptability And Experience, Po Wa Wong, Brigitte K. Matthies

Modern Psychological Studies

Verbal abuse can lead to physical abuse if it is not recognized, or is tolerated in one's partner. Participant's perception of the acceptability of verbal abuse (PAVA) was compared to the level of verbal abuse in their own relationship (Conflict Tactics Scales-II). PAVA had a weak positive relationship with the actual occurrence of verbal abuse. PAVA and levels of verbal abuse were highest in very new and more established relationships regardless of relationship status. Males were more accepting of verbal abuse, and reported it less in their relationships. Finally, African American, Hispanic American and Asian American participants reported lower levels …

Comparison Of In Situ And Columnar Aerosol Spectral Measurements During Texaqs-Gomaccs 2006: Testing Parameterizations For Estimating Aerosol Fine Mode Properties, Dean B. Atkinson, Paola Massoli, Norman T. O'Neill, Patricia K. Quinn, Sarah D. Brooks, Barry Lefer

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

During the 2006 Texas Air Quality Study and Gulf of Mexico Atmospheric Composition and Climate Study (TexAQS-GoMACCS 2006), the optical, chemical and microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols were measured on multiple mobile platforms and at ground based stations. In situ measurements of the aerosol light extinction coefficient (σep) were performed by two multi-wavelength cavity ring-down (CRD) instruments, one located on board the NOAA R/V Ronald H. Brown (RHB) and the other located at the University of Houston, Moody Tower (UHMT). An AERONET sunphotometer was also located at the UHMT to measure the columnar aerosol optical depth (AOD). The σep data …

Promoting Innovation: The Law Of Publicly Traded Corporations, Merritt B. Fox Jan 2010

Promoting Innovation: The Law Of Publicly Traded Corporations, Merritt B. Fox

Faculty Scholarship

Improving economic welfare requires that society’s scarce savings be allocated among proposed real investment projects in a way that appreciates the prospects of promising new innovations. Corporate and securities law help structure important elements of this process of allocation. This article sketches out an approach based upon a seemingly paradoxical analogy of a market economy’s overall finance process to the way a hierarchical organization gathers and processes relevant bits of information dispersed among many individuals in order to make decisions. It thereby takes advantage of important thinking in communications and organizational theory about how to make organizations sensitive to the …

Trust In Me: Cbb Access Services Collaboration, Julie Retelle, Leanne Pander, Margaret Menchen

ILS Scholarship

Colby, Bates and Bowdoin (CBB) College libraries have a thirty-year history of working closely with one another that has created an extraordinary level of mutual trust. In 2010 we completed a 3-year Mellon funded collections grant, and as a result CBB agreed to share a single approval plan that automatically sends a single title to be shared by the three schools. CBB created a formal governance structure to coordinate the many aspects of our increased collaboration which embraces four major areas of our activities, one of which is Access Services. The group consults on and informs policies and procedures that …

Establishing Legal Permanence For The Child, Donald N. Duquette Jan 2010

Establishing Legal Permanence For The Child, Donald N. Duquette

Book Chapters

This chapter is intended to identify options for legal permanency that state law and the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA) commonly recognize to better serve children in foster care. Ideally, the child will ultimately return safely to his or her home of origin. But when a return home is not possible, the child welfare legal process should result in a safe and legally secure alternative permanent placement for the child. The emphasis on legally secure permanent placement is meant to provide the child with psychological stability and a sense of belonging and to limit the likelihood …

Representing Children And Youth, Donald N. Duquette, Ann M. Haralambie Jan 2010

Representing Children And Youth, Donald N. Duquette, Ann M. Haralambie

Book Chapters

The role of the child's attorney is unique in American jurisprudence and not yet clearly defined by law or tradition. There is a growing consensus, however, that children in dependency cases should have lawyers who are as active and as involved in their cases as are lawyers for any other party in any other litigation. Yet there continues to be confusion and debate over the role and duties of the lawyer, particularly as to what voice the child should have in determining the direction and goals of the litigation. Policy makers have differed as to whether the child's lawyer should …

Do You Know How Your Children Are? International Perspectives On Child Abuse, Mistreatment, And Neglect, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews Jan 2010

Do You Know How Your Children Are? International Perspectives On Child Abuse, Mistreatment, And Neglect, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In the early 1980s, televised public service announcements in the United States queried, “Parents …it is 10:00 pm, do you know where your children are?” These were launched through the media as reminders for American parents to take a moment and think about their children and to strive to inform themselves of their children‟s activities. Similar broadcasts to urge parents to interact with their children and to provide simple parenting tips have followed in various forms since this time. An interesting realization is that almost all of these “messages” were directed towards the parents by the government for the children. …

The Development Of Modern Corporate Governance In China And India, Nicholas C. Howson, Vikramaditya S. Khanna Jan 2010

The Development Of Modern Corporate Governance In China And India, Nicholas C. Howson, Vikramaditya S. Khanna

Book Chapters

Corporate governance reform has become a topic of considerable debate both in the US and in many emerging markets. Indeed, the discussion is important because these reforms may have potentially long-standing effects upon the global allocation of capital, and in understanding the ways in which governance norms are communicated across markets and nations in an ever-globalizing world. In this chapter we examine the corporate governance reform efforts of the world's two biggest and fastest growing emerging markets, the People's Republic of China (PRC or China) and India. In the process we find that our understanding of how and why corporate …

The Legal Ethics Of Metadata Mining, Andrew M. Perlman Jan 2010

The Legal Ethics Of Metadata Mining, Andrew M. Perlman

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This essay, which is part of a symposium edition of the Akron Law Review, explores the practice of metadata mining (i.e., the surreptitious examination of an electronic document’s hidden data). The essay reviews the legal ethics opinions that have addressed the practice and contends that metadata mining is simply a variation of the oft-examined problem of inadvertently disclosed documents. The essay concludes that flat bans on metadata mining are misguided and that the issue should be treated in the same manner as inadvertent disclosures more generally. Under this approach, if a state permits lawyers to review inadvertently disclosed privileged documents, …

Place: Community Development And The Effects Of Nature And Culture, Laura Zimmerman Jan 2010

Place: Community Development And The Effects Of Nature And Culture, Laura Zimmerman

Landscape Architecture Theses

What conjures a sense of place? Is it the landscape, the built environment, the people, or more likely a combination of them all? This document explores the factors that contribute to a unique sense of place. With this understanding, how can these factors be utilized to show the effects of nature and culture in site specific design?

Permeating Barriers - Minneapolis, Mn, Zachary Pleiss Jan 2010

Permeating Barriers - Minneapolis, Mn, Zachary Pleiss

Landscape Architecture Theses

Vast neighborhood change has long been characteristic of American communities. Declining physical conditions, social instability, and urban sprawl have all impacted inner city neighborhoods over the past few decades. In the mid 1900’s there was a highlighted trend toward disinvestment in inner-city neighborhoods. Urban sprawl had caused state funding to shift its attention towards metro suburban neighborhoods. This lead to the demise of some inner-city communities, and the proverbial nail in the coffin for some of these communities has been the creation of the freeway system. These freeway systems have created barriers that cut off strong connections between inner city …

Holocaust-Denial Literature: A Sixth Bibliography, John A. Drobnicki Jan 2010

Holocaust-Denial Literature: A Sixth Bibliography, John A. Drobnicki

Journal of Hate Studies

This bibliography is a supplement to five earlier ones that were published in the March 1994, December 1996, September 1998, December 2000, and September 2002 issues of the Bulletin of Bibliography, which has since ceased publication. During the intervening time, Holocaust denial has continued to be discussed in both the scholarly literature and the mainstream press, especially during the trial resulting from the libel lawsuit filed by David Irving against Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books, and his subsequent appeal of that verdict. The Holocaust deniers, who prefer to call themselves “revisionists” in an attempt to gain scholarly legitimacy, have refused …

The Relationship Between The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator And The Dispositional Resistance To Change Scale, Thomas A. Rausch Jan 2010

The Relationship Between The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator And The Dispositional Resistance To Change Scale, Thomas A. Rausch

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to contribute to a better understanding of relationship between resistance to change and personality preference types. A survey was developed and administered to graduate students in the School of Technology at Eastern Illinois University. A total of 33 students responded. The surveys compared levels of resistance to organizational change to Myers Briggs Type Indicator preference types on each indices of personality. Results of this study indicated that the level of resistance to change based upon personality preference types is not significant. Recommendations for practice and recommendations for further research are discussed.
