Comparison Of Noise Reduction Results For Fit-Testing And Continuous Observations During Coal Mining For Selected Earplug And Earmuff, Mingyu Wu Jan 2010

Comparison Of Noise Reduction Results For Fit-Testing And Continuous Observations During Coal Mining For Selected Earplug And Earmuff, Mingyu Wu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is not clear how effective hearing protective devices are during actual use, including during coal mining. A proposed solution is individual fit-testing, which is usually done in an office environment. However, it is not clear that fit-testing accurately represents protection while actually working. This research investigates both issues for coal miners for two hearing protectors (E-A-R earplug and Peltor earmuff). It consists of two related studies: lab studies of fit-testing and field studies relating fit-testing at coal mine offices to the actual noise reductions provided for the same coal miners during work.;The effects of several variables on fit-testing results …

Late-Preterm And Full-Term Infant Sleep: Relations With Maternal Cognitions And Nocturnal Behaviors, Marion E. Young Jan 2010

Late-Preterm And Full-Term Infant Sleep: Relations With Maternal Cognitions And Nocturnal Behaviors, Marion E. Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Approximately 13% of infants born in the United States each year are delivered prematurely, defined as prior to 37 weeks gestation. Among these premature infants, 84% are born between 32 and 36 weeks gestation (Kelly, 2006). Past research has found that the sleep/wake patterns of late-preterm and full-term infants are different (Gossel-Symank, Grimmer, Korte, & Siegmund, 2004; Ingersoll & Thoman, 1999; Ju et al., 1991). However, little is known about psychosocial factors (i.e., maternal sleep-related cognitions and nocturnal behaviors) that may contribute to differences between late-preterm and full-term infant sleep. Few studies have investigated the relations among infant sleep behavior, …

Interactions Of Synthetic Metal Porphyrinates With Phus, A Cytoplasmic Heme Trafficking Protein From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Amber Elise Moberg Jan 2010

Interactions Of Synthetic Metal Porphyrinates With Phus, A Cytoplasmic Heme Trafficking Protein From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Amber Elise Moberg

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic, Gram negative, bacterial pathogen that commonly establishes infection in immunocompromised individuals. It contains protein-based, iron uptake pathways that target both heme and nonheme iron sources in the host. When the Pseudomonas heme uptake system is compromised by genetic knockout of the cytoplasmic heme trafficking protein, PhuS, the ability to establish infection is lost. PhuS functions to transfer heme to a heme oxygenase, an 02 dependent heme metabolizing enzyme, so that it can be degraded to a usable form for the organism. Within the long-term goal of developing pharmaceutical agents to inhibit heme uptake by bacterial …

Durability Of Concrete Members Strengthened With Cfrp Sheets Under Harsh Environmental Conditions, Md. Mozahid Hossain Jan 2010

Durability Of Concrete Members Strengthened With Cfrp Sheets Under Harsh Environmental Conditions, Md. Mozahid Hossain

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The deterioration of concrete structures 1s a maJor concern to the infrastructure community. Typical sources of deterioration may include aging,.incrcased service load, and environmental damage. Structural rehabilitation using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets has recently attracted attention to the infrastructure community because of the superior strengthening effects in comparison to conventional repair methods. The CFRP sheets may be bonded on the deteriorated concrete structure using bonding agents to enhance load-carrying capacity. The most important consideration in such a strengthening method may be the long term durability under harsh environmental conditions. Furthermore, premature debonding of bonded CFRP sheets may also …

Sustainability Of Time, Nicholas Peake Jan 2010

Sustainability Of Time, Nicholas Peake

Architecture Theses

The Government is building a storage facility at Yucca Mountain in the Nevada desert, which is where the dormitory complex would need to be as well. This is as structure that will have a program and life span of at least 1000 years. The structure needs to last 1000 years because it takes less money and fewer resources to build one building that lasts 1000 years, then to build 35 buildings that will last as long. This is important because the sustainability of buildings is going to greatly effect how long mankind has left on Earth. The type of building …

Architecture and its infrastructure act as a mediating tool defining the world around us by structuring experience. This thesis will define the consequence of building and how designers structure experience by opening and obscuring creating physical, intellectual, and even political boundaries. The vehicle of the study is an addition to the iconic North Dakota State Capitol Building in Bismarck, North Dakota. The addition includes interpretive space at the base of the current structure as well as new entry condition and vertical circulation. The new architecture questions how one makes additions to existing pieces of architecture and studies how the manipulation …

Today For Tomorrow, Christopher Anderson Jan 2010

Today For Tomorrow, Christopher Anderson

Architecture Theses

Educating today’s children about the facts of sustainable awareness is essential to reach the maximum potential in order to provide for both the environment and future populations. In today’s world, children seem to hold a hierarchy in which technological advancements in computers and video games reign dominantly over recreation and the outdoor natural environment. The problem is, that as we move through this digital revolution, children are becoming more and more disconnected from the offerings that our planet provides. In order for our existence to flourish, it is important for today’s youth to become more environmentally aware of their actions. …

Causes Of Construction Delays For High Rise Buildings: A Quantitative Comparison Between The Usa And India, Arun Billa Jan 2010

Causes Of Construction Delays For High Rise Buildings: A Quantitative Comparison Between The Usa And India, Arun Billa

Construction Management and Engineering

High rise buildings are complex, high risk, and multi-contractor projects which make them prone to construction delays. Delays can lead to time overrun, affect the total project duration and the total cost, and could result in litigation. Most construction schedules are deterministic and do not include the uncertainty and risk inherent in the diverse activities which constitute the construction project. Generally, high rise buildings are expensive undertakings and a schedule overrun could lead to significant time and money losses. Therefore, a high rise project manager must be able to estimate the potential delays and eliminate them if possible in order …

Lord Of The Living Souls: Dominion And The Spiritual Lives Of Animals In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kurt William Russow Jan 2010

Lord Of The Living Souls: Dominion And The Spiritual Lives Of Animals In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kurt William Russow

English

This paper examines Milton's views of the spiritual status of animals as presented in Paradise lost. It discusses how Milton enters into discussion with the discourses of 111 theology, philosophy, and both antique and modern science to construct his own nuanced view on the dominion humankind was theologically mandated to have over animals. Milton promotes a complex animal ethic based simultaneously on both hierarchy and kinship. Ultimately this ethic is used not only to celebrate animals, but also to celebrate a stewardship-oriented notion of a divinely ordained hierarchy.

I'M Seeing Red!Literally: The Effect Of Metaphoric Representation On Perception, Adam Kent Fetterman Jan 2010

I'M Seeing Red!Literally: The Effect Of Metaphoric Representation On Perception, Adam Kent Fetterman

Psychology

Metaphor is often used to represent abstract concepts using concrete domains (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). One set of metaphors that has long been of interest, but seldom studied, is the set of those linking color and emotion. Specifically, red and anger are often linked in everyday language and popular media. There is a recent body of work on metaphoric representation processes, yet none of it has focused on color perception. The present studies investigate the effects of priming anger-related concepts and experiences on the visual perception of color. It was predicted that participants would perceive degraded color screens as red …

Conquering Avoidance By Avoiding Death: The Effects Of Mortality Salience On Goal Value, Goal Commitment, And Goal Pursuit In Depressive Individuals, Peter John Myxter Jan 2010

Conquering Avoidance By Avoiding Death: The Effects Of Mortality Salience On Goal Value, Goal Commitment, And Goal Pursuit In Depressive Individuals, Peter John Myxter

Psychology

Research into the antecedents and consequences of successful goal pursuit is reviewed within the framework of a proposed existential intervention for depression. Behavioral perspectives propose that insufficient goal pursuit and concomitant positive reinforcement leads to depressed mood. While substantial research has been conducted examining the relation between goal pursuit and psychological well-being, little research exists regarding strategies for fostering increased motivation for goal pursuit in depressed individuals. This review suggests that novel strategies for increasing goal pursuit motivation can be derived from the existential paradigm of Terror Management Theory (TMT). Past TMT research indicates that reminders of mortality lead to …

Problem. Parenting is a process which requests a great deal of flexibility and understanding. Both parents and child are engaged in the human developmental process; in most cases parents reach the midlife crisis more or less at the same time when the child reaches the adolescence phase. In most cases neither the parents nor the adolescent understand what is really happening in their lives. They begin to dislike each other and a conflictual atmosphere exists in the home. This lack of understanding brings about the breakdown in the relation parent adolescent. On the other hand parents usually have certain goals …

Developing Spiritual Formation And Mission Awareness In The Hill Portuguese Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Johannesburg, South Africa, Dilson M. Bezerra

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Between 1992 and 2007, the attendance of the Hill Portuguese Seventh-day Adventist Church has declined from 200 to 60 members and the church completely lost its sense of mission. This downturn requires investigation and study in order to reverse the situation. The project is an implementation of a program to revive the church in fellowship with God, and in action within the community. Further, Portuguese immigrant members display a tendency towards liberalism when removed from their native culture.

Method

An informal survey was created and administered to the church members in order to discover why membership had been declining …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the first study was to compare a phytogenic feed additive and an antibiotic feed additive when measuring oxidative stress in young broilers. Phytogenic feed additives are plantderived products used in poultry feeding to improve overall performance of broilers. Although the precise mechanism by which the increased growth rate is realized remains uncertain, these products have antioxidant components that are known to reduce oxidative stress. This is considered important in that reactive oxygen species (ROS), the causative factor of oxidative stress, can result in damage to biological systems within the bird. In this study, 588 one day-old Cobb …

There is little treaty-based, constitutional or federal law except for federal regulatory law that largely adopts state law …

The Feminist Cure: Feminist Identity As A Shield From Hyper-Sexualized L'Vledia Induced Self-Objectification In College Women, Natalie Smith Carlson Jan 2010

The Feminist Cure: Feminist Identity As A Shield From Hyper-Sexualized L'Vledia Induced Self-Objectification In College Women, Natalie Smith Carlson

English

This paper explores the impact of hyper-sexualized media on college women in terms of inducing self-objectification and/or inhibiting feminist identity. The survey and resulting analysis showed participants' feminist orientation ostensibly affected their inclination to self-objectify after watching and responding to a slideshow of common images of women in our culture. By comparing the reactions of women \Vith high feminist orientation and low feminist orientation, suggestions were clear about connections between an identification with feminism and a propensity to value the self and other women for characteristics beyond those of appearance and sexuality.

Exploring Factors Contributing To Current Versus Former Coaching Status Of Women Coaches: A Social Exchange Theory Perspective., Justine Vosloo Jan 2010

Exploring Factors Contributing To Current Versus Former Coaching Status Of Women Coaches: A Social Exchange Theory Perspective., Justine Vosloo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The percentage of women coaches at the helm of women’s sports teams has dropped from 90% in 1972, to 42.6% in 2010 (Carpenter & Acosta, 2010). Previous research has found that women coaches experience discrimination (Greenhaus et al., 1990) social stigma, and homophobia (Griffin, 1998). Difficulties with work-life balance have been identified as a barrier to coaching. Mentoring has been positive for the development of career satisfaction, commitment and positive job attitudes (Ragins et al., 2000), however, the role of mentoring in retaining women coaches needs exploration. This study used social exchange theory to determine if perceived costs/benefits of coaching, …

Refinementbased Verification Of Elastic Pipelined System With Early Evaluation, Yangwei Cai Jan 2010

Refinementbased Verification Of Elastic Pipelined System With Early Evaluation, Yangwei Cai

Electrical and Computer Engineering

This thesis presents a formal verification procedure to check correctness of the synchronous elastic pipelined system that incorporates early evaluation against its synchronous parent system. Note that the goal of the verification procedure is not to establish the correctness of the algorithm for synthesizing elastic circuits, but instead, to find bugs and formally prove the correctness of elasticized designs with early evaluation. Dataflow through elastic architectures is complicated by the insertion of any number of elastic buffers in any place in the design. Elastic token-flow diagrams are introduced, which are used to track the flow of data in elastic architectures. …
