Shaping A Creative Milieu: Creativity, Process, Pedagogy, Leadership, And Place, Tom Borrup
Shaping A Creative Milieu: Creativity, Process, Pedagogy, Leadership, And Place, Tom Borrup
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This paper surveys research in relation to the conditions and processes considered important in fostering creativity in a variety of contexts including cities, organizations, and learning environments. Two established schools of the arts, and their leaders, serve as case studies in the examination of milieu designed to foster creative thinking and work. The paper identifies ten characteristics found to be common in the formation of creative milieu by scholars in psychology, business, economics, anthropology, geography, leadership, urban studies, education, and the arts. Characteristics include exchanges across cultures and domains of knowledge, opportunities for serendipitous interactions and for solitude, risk-taking, stable …

Ethnic Identity: The Cambodian Experience, Sastra Bour
Ethnic Identity: The Cambodian Experience, Sastra Bour
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
This thesis research contributes to the literature of Cambodian Americans, and in particular the second generation, which has attracted limited scholarly attention. It examines how these individuals make sense of their Cambodian ethnic identity in North Texas. Individual interviews were conducted with twelve second generation Cambodian-Americans in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This study focused on the ethnic identity of second generation Cambodian-Americans by examining cultural practices, knowledge of one's family history, language and peers that may serve as significant factors. It was found that peers did not determine if their sense of identity heighten or lessen, while other factors did. …
Driving Force: An Exploration Of Texan Prius Drivers, Heather Champeau
Driving Force: An Exploration Of Texan Prius Drivers, Heather Champeau
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine what Prius owners use their vehicle to tell the world about themselves and to discover whether this varies by gender. This was explored through the lens of situational simulation, a blending of Baudrillard's (1983) theory concerning simulation and current literature concerning gendered consumption of environmental goods and awareness.In-depth interviews with fourteen participants were the main source of data. The interview schedule was loosely based on the work of previous researchers (Heffner, Kurani and Turrentine 2007), though a unique questionnaire was included after interviews were complete. Participants were gathered using snowball methodology in …
Media Framing And Social Movements: A Case Study Of The Red Shirt Movement In Taiwan, Wen-Hsin Ho
Media Framing And Social Movements: A Case Study Of The Red Shirt Movement In Taiwan, Wen-Hsin Ho
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
In my thesis, I use the social movement literature and framing theory to examine the rapid rise and fall of Taiwan's Red Shirt social movement in 2006. The movement was against President Chen Shui-bian, who was accused of corruption; its main goal was to oust President Chen from office. From its inception in August 2006 to its demise in October 2006, this social movement swelled to include several hundred thousand participants, but collapsed nearly as quickly as it rose to prominence. The Red Shirt movement and the surrounding events were extensively covered by television, print, and Internet media. Many scholars …
Vietnamese Amerasians: A Study Of Identity Construction, Ky-Giao C. Nguyen
Vietnamese Amerasians: A Study Of Identity Construction, Ky-Giao C. Nguyen
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
We define who we are by defining who we are not (Daniel 1996). What happens when we don't know who we are not, how can we determine who we are? What if the markers of family connections, community alliances and citizenship are missing and there are no peers with whom to make comparisons? "What are you? Where are you from?" Hispanic, Filipino, sometimes even Native American rather than Asian, are ethnicities often ascribed to Vietnamese Amerasians (children of Vietnamese and American parents). Curiously, for such a personal question, the reaction from others to the response "Vietnamese Amerasian" is often rejection …
The Relationship Between Science Literacy Levels And Religious Belief Among A Sample Of Community College Students, Wesley Philip Price
The Relationship Between Science Literacy Levels And Religious Belief Among A Sample Of Community College Students, Wesley Philip Price
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to quantitatively explore how beliefs regarding creation and evolution are related. To this end, attitude structures, cognitive sociology, creation, evolution, science, status politics and world view are defined and related issues are explored. A questionnaire was administered to 348 North Lake College students. It was found that the controversy regarding creationists negating evolution is educational and political in nature. Implications suggest that a person's religious beliefs, academic understanding of evolution and science, and opinions regarding what can and cannot be taught in the science classroom are indicative of the creation-evolution controversy. Ultimately, this research …
Teaching And Speaking To Social Change: A Digital Storytelling Approach Addressing Access To Higher Education, Aline C. Gubrium, Timothy Scott
Teaching And Speaking To Social Change: A Digital Storytelling Approach Addressing Access To Higher Education, Aline C. Gubrium, Timothy Scott
Societies Without Borders
In this article, we briefly review neoliberal economic rationales used to inform educa- tional reforms, juxtaposed with the function of public education as a public good. We then introduce a new participatory visual method grounded in a human rights educa- tion approach, digital storytelling. Digital storytelling can serve triple purposes: as a data collection technique used by social researchers to critically assess participants’ experiences as they are affected by education reforms, as a collaborative method for political organizing, and as a tactic for building awareness to address these reforms. We review a digital storytelling workshop as it was carried out …

Juggling Toddlers, Teens, And Tenure: The Personal And Professional Realities Of Women On The Tenure Track With Children, Jennifer Lynn Sipes
Juggling Toddlers, Teens, And Tenure: The Personal And Professional Realities Of Women On The Tenure Track With Children, Jennifer Lynn Sipes
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the personal and professional experiences of women faculty on the tenure track with children. Despite more than 30 years of conversation about gender equity since the passage of Title IX as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, an inverse relationship persists between the prestige of an academic rank and the percentage of women in that rank. Recent research has drawn attention to differences in marital and family status between men and women faculty in higher education, suggesting that childrearing may serve as an impediment to the career advancement of women faculty …

Study Abroad Dynamics: Anthropological Perspectives, Jonathan Maravelias
Study Abroad Dynamics: Anthropological Perspectives, Jonathan Maravelias
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Americans typically lack cultural reflexivity--most Americans will even deny that there is a specific American culture. Many Americans often experience heightened states of anxiety and feelings of alienation, which several anthropologists and cross-cultural psychologists attribute to an unhealthy reliance on individualism and consumerism. If Americans could learn cultural reflexivity, then they may experience a sense of connectedness and higher self-esteem. Since cultural reflexivity can be learned, I have investigated whether or not study abroad programs help to teach it. More generally, I have studied the education abroad experience anthropologically through participating in a 35-day tour of the Mediterranean offered by …

New Release: Coming To Terms With The Nation
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
On Monday, China’s decennial census began, sending six million census workers door-to-door in a quest to record and count the country’s population over the course of only ten days. A key issue in this census, according to some observers, will be placing China’s population in terms of place of residence. One thing analysts are waiting to find out, for example, is how many citizens of the PRC are described as living in cities rather than villages, as this census, which comes after a period of massive rural-to-urban migration, is supposed to describe where people physically live and work, not their …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
On first blush, one would think that reviewing Nick Land’s Shanghai World Expo Guidebook 2010 would be an exercise akin to reviewing a movie poster for Avatar—a kind of 2-D portrait of a 3-D experience.
