Transforming Teaching Cultures: Departmental Teaching Fellows As Agents Of Change, Cassandra Volpe Horii Jan 2010

Transforming Teaching Cultures: Departmental Teaching Fellows As Agents Of Change, Cassandra Volpe Horii

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The Departmental Teaching Fellows (DTF) program of the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University employs doctoral students as peer teaching mentors. Four years of program assessment data include quantitative work inventories, surveys and self-reports, interviews of faculty and administrators, and a survey of all graduate students recently teaching in arts and sciences. Observed program outcomes include (1) better informal support for teaching, (2) higher quality and quantity of interactions between graduate students and faculty on teaching, and (3) more systematic opportunities for teaching-related professional development. Qualitative assessment data suggest that the DTFs occupy several liminal positions …

Individual Achievement In An Honors Research Community: Teaching Vygotsky’S Zone Of Proximal Development, Kaitlin A. Briggs Jan 2010

Individual Achievement In An Honors Research Community: Teaching Vygotsky’S Zone Of Proximal Development, Kaitlin A. Briggs

Honors in Practice Online Archive

The years leading up to the 1917 Russian October Revolution must have been a dynamic environment for an emerging young intellectual living in Moscow. Eclipsed by such popular Western cultural representations as David Lean’s 1965 Academy Award winning film, Dr. Zhivago (based on Pasternak’s novel), this milieu included the writers Babel, Gorky, and Nabokov; the poets Mandel’shtam and Tsvetaeva; the composers Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky; the theater director and acting teacher Stanislavsky; and the artists Chagall and Kandinsky (Van Der Veer, 23–4). There we find situated a law student, also studying philosophy, literature, and aesthetics, who went on to become …

The Birth Of Corporate Governance, Harwell Wells Jan 2010

The Birth Of Corporate Governance, Harwell Wells

Seattle University Law Review

Part I of this Article briefly examines the concept of “corporate governance” and argues for dating the concept’s origins to the debates of the 1920s. Part II then moves on to examine early scholarly and popular discussions of the separation of ownership and control. After surveying the historical developments that produced the recognizably modern corporate economy around the turn of the century, it examines early scholarly and popular discussions of the separation of ownership and control, focusing on three major thinkers, Louis D. Brandeis, Walter Lippmann, and Thorstein Veblen. It argues that, while each of these authors examined the separation …

Moral Foundation Theory And The Law, Colin Prince Jan 2010

Moral Foundation Theory And The Law, Colin Prince

Seattle University Law Review

Moral foundation theory argues that there are five basic moral foundations: (1) harm/care, (2) fairness/reciprocity, (3) ingroup/loyalty, (4) authority/respect, and (5) purity/sanctity. These five foundations comprise the building blocks of morality, regardless of the culture. In other words, while every society constructs its own morality, it is the varying weights that each society allots to these five universal foundations that create the variety. Haidt likens moral foundation theory to an “audio equalizer,” with each culture adjusting the sliders differently. The researchers, however, were not content to simply categorize moral foundations—they have tied the foundations to political leanings. And it is …

Book Review- Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice And Leadership., Jean M. Haar Jan 2010

Book Review- Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice And Leadership., Jean M. Haar

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Bolman and Deal's 4th edition of Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice, and Leadership remains a classic, "must have" resource for those involved in organizational leadership. The edition supports the relevance and timeliness of the authors' insightful approach about organizations and leadership. The authors reinforce the usefulness of their four-frame model (structural, human resource, political, symbolic) for refining leadership practices. The four frames serve as a tool to analyze organizational deci- sion-making and to reflect on the effectiveness of processes, procedures, and results. Updated research, examples, and case studies add to those pre- viously drawn from business, education, health care, and the …

The Soul And The Body In Hegel's Anthropology, Nicholas Mowad Jan 2010

The Soul And The Body In Hegel's Anthropology, Nicholas Mowad

Dissertations

I provide a close exegetical reading of Hegel's "anthropology," his doctrine of the human body and soul, located in the first part of the Philosophy of Spirit, volume three of the Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences. In the course of this exegesis I show how Hegel demonstrates that all of the phenomena there under investigation must be understood as at once corporeal and distinctively human. Accordingly, anthropological phenomena should not be understood as essentially the same in humans as it is in animals, though many commentators allege that they should be. I provide a survey of the secondary literature on …

Book Review Of The American Indian Oral History Manual: Making Many Voices Heard By Charles E. Trimble, Barbara W. Sommer, And Mary Kay Quinlan., Susan D. Penfield Jan 2010

Book Review Of The American Indian Oral History Manual: Making Many Voices Heard By Charles E. Trimble, Barbara W. Sommer, And Mary Kay Quinlan., Susan D. Penfield

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The American Indian Oral History Manual offers a clear, succinct, and practical approach to guide and encourage the collection of American Indian oral history by Indigenous peoples themselves. Building on previous work conducted for the Native American Veteran History Project, it was tested at two Great Plains states workshops (South Dakota and Nebraska) attended by representatives from tribal colleges and veteran interest groups. The authors bring a great deal of expertise to the table in producing this useful text. Charles Trimble, an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux tribe, has a distinguished record of involvement in Indigenous issues, including service …

Book Review Of Contesting Knowledge: Museums And Indigenous Perspectives Edited By Susan Sleeper-Smith., Karen Coody Cooper Jan 2010

Book Review Of Contesting Knowledge: Museums And Indigenous Perspectives Edited By Susan Sleeper-Smith., Karen Coody Cooper

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Seventeen scholars contributed to this group work. First exposed to compilation books in the eighties, I found the format exhilarating then. There were so many angles, so much information. Now, however, such books are, to me, rather like walking a cobblestone path. Maybe I just have inappropriate shoes, but the journey is seldom entirely smooth going. And having to adapt to different writing styles every 20 to 30 pages is an added hindrance. Still, the genre is here to stay, and Contesting Knowledge has much to recommend it. Analyzed in four out of twelve pieces, the National Museum of the …

A Woman’S Worth, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jan 2010

A Woman’S Worth, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines three traditionally “taboo trades”: (1) the sale of sex, (2) compensated egg donation, and (3) commercial surrogacy. The Article purposely invokes examples in which the compensated provision of goods or services (primarily or exclusively by women) is legal, but in which commodification is only partially achieved or is constrained in some way. I argue that incomplete commodification disadvantages female providers in these instances, by constraining their agency, earning power, or status. Moreover, anticommodification and coercion rhetoric is sometimes invoked in these settings by interest groups who, at best, have little interest in female empowerment and, at worst, …

Narratives Of Diversity In The Corporate Boardroom: What Corporate Insiders Say About Why Diversity Matters, Kimberly D. Krawiec, Lissa Lamkin Broome, John M. Conley Jan 2010

Narratives Of Diversity In The Corporate Boardroom: What Corporate Insiders Say About Why Diversity Matters, Kimberly D. Krawiec, Lissa Lamkin Broome, John M. Conley

Faculty Scholarship

Over the last generation, the concept of diversity has become commonplace and taken-for-granted in discourses ranging from law to education to business. In higher education, for example, it is hard to imagine a faculty job search or a student admissions discussion that was not heavily laden with talk of diversity, in the sense of the representative inclusion of women and racial and ethnic minorities in a group or organization. In this paper we present the results of an interview-based study of the discourse of diversity in a particular business setting: the corporate boardroom. Our principal observation is that—thirty-one years after …

Immigrant Stories: Generation 1.5 Mexican American Students And English Language Learning In An Illinois Community College, Thomas Lloyd Hansen Jan 2010

Immigrant Stories: Generation 1.5 Mexican American Students And English Language Learning In An Illinois Community College, Thomas Lloyd Hansen

Dissertations

The number of recent immigrants to the United States has increased dramatically in the last few years, and more of these immigrants are members of a group often designated as "Generation 1.5" students. These immigrant students were born in another country, came to the United States at the age of 13 or older, and graduated from high school in this country. This qualitative research study occurs within two Illinois community colleges that require some students to enroll in courses below regular English Composition I as indicated by one or more placement tests. These courses are English as a Second Language …

Hidden Voices From The Culianary Past: Oral History As A Tool For Culinary Historians, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire Jan 2010

Hidden Voices From The Culianary Past: Oral History As A Tool For Culinary Historians, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire

Conference papers

There has been a growing interest in culinary history and gastronomy in the last three decades (Messer, Haber et al. 2000). Much of the work of culinary historians is centred on written sources, ranging from cookbooks, diaries, or menus. The voices and life experiences of most food workers (both domestic and professional) are hidden, apart from the minority who wrote cookbooks or memoirs. This paper discusses the use of oral history as a tool to un-lock the experiences of food workers and draws on the author’s experiences using oral history in researching the history of Dublin restaurants 1900-2000 for his …

Patterns Of Indigenous Resilience In The Amazon: A Case Study Of Huaorani Hunting In Ecuador, Flora Lu Jan 2010

Patterns Of Indigenous Resilience In The Amazon: A Case Study Of Huaorani Hunting In Ecuador, Flora Lu

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper takes a resilience approach to examining human forager-prey dynamics using as a case study Huaorani hunting in the Ecuadorian Amazon. I compare methodologically similar datasets collected in the same Huaorani villages in 1996-1997 and 2001. Rather than assuming that human hunters simply act on prey species and linearly drive them to depletion, a resilience approach views this dynamic as a complex social and ecological system characterized by feedbacks, nonlinearities, uncertainty, unpredictability, and non-equilibrium dynamics. Using a computer simulation of human foragers and prey (published previously), I highlight how even using relatively simple assumptions, the human forager-prey relationship exhibits …

Tribal-Federal Collaboration In Resource Management, Ellen M. Donoghue, Sara A. Thompson, John C. Bliss Jan 2010

Tribal-Federal Collaboration In Resource Management, Ellen M. Donoghue, Sara A. Thompson, John C. Bliss

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The increase in collaborative projects involving American Indian tribes and natural resource management agencies in the United States reflects two emergent trends: 1) the use of collaborative approaches between agencies and groups in managing natural resources; and 2) the concurrent increased recognition of American Indian rights, institutionalization of consultation processes, and a general movement of Indian self-determination. This article focuses on institutional mechanisms that bring together tribes and natural resource management agencies in collaborative processes to achieve mutually desired resource management objectives. Using qualitative analysis of data from ten collaborative projects across the United States, we identify attributes of collaborative …

Concessions And Conservation: A Study Of Environmentalism And Anti-Environmentalism Among Commodity Farmers, Eleanor Shoreman-Ouimet Jan 2010

Concessions And Conservation: A Study Of Environmentalism And Anti-Environmentalism Among Commodity Farmers, Eleanor Shoreman-Ouimet

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article seeks to deconstruct the anti-environmentalist label currently attached to many rural communities around the world. The study specifically addresses supposed anti-environmentalism among commodity farmers in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta and argues that it is overly simplistic to dub any community as anti-environmentalist before determining the historic basis for their motivations and beliefs. The data presented are drawn from onsite interviews with area farmers, community leaders and residents. The research indicates that although intensive farming practices have injured the environment and local residents have opposed environmentalist intervention, their actions and beliefs are rooted not in anti-environmental beliefs, but rather in …
