A Conceptual Guide To Natural History Museum Visitors’ Understanding Of Evolution, E. Margaret Evans, Amy N. Spiegel, Wendy Gram, Brandy N. Frazier, Medha Tare, Sarah Thompson, Judy Diamond
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Museum visitors are an ideal population for assessing the persistence of the conceptual barriers that make it difficult to grasp Darwinian evolutionary theory. In comparison with other members of the public, they are more likely to be interested in natural history, have higher education levels, and be exposed to the relevant content. If museum visitors do not grasp evolutionary principles, it seems unlikely that other members of the general public would do so. In the current study, 32 systematically selected visitors to three Midwest museums of natural history provided detailed open-ended explanations of biological change in seven diverse organisms. They …

Grounded Theory As A “Family Of Methods”: A Genealogical Analysis To Guide Research, Wayne A. Babchuk
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
This inquiry traces the evolution of grounded theory from a nuclear to an extended family of methods and considers the implications that decision-making based on informed choices throughout all phases of the research process has for realizing the potential of grounded theory for advancing adult education theory and practice.

Three Decades In The Cold And Wet: A Career In Northern Archaeology, Sophia Perdikaris, George Hambrecht, Ramona Harrison
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
Thomas H. McGovern has been a pioneering researcher in the North Atlantic region for most of the past 40 years. He has taken his specialty in zooarchaeology beyond counting bones to actually addressing questions about human environment interactions and human response to extreme environmental events. A prolific writer and researcher with a multitude of publications and an impressive funding record, McGovern has always been a proponent of multidisciplinarity and international collaboration. His vision resulted in the creation of the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization (NABO) that currently has more than 400 scientific partners and has been leading projects throughout the Circum …

Persecution Of Coptic Christians In Modern Egypt, Alla Rubinstein
Persecution Of Coptic Christians In Modern Egypt, Alla Rubinstein
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The Christian community of Egypt dates back to the seventeenth century and comprises 12 per cent of the population today. As one of the oldest churches of the world, the Coptic Christian Church, first formed in Alexandria, has stood resilient and faithful to its traditions against intolerance, siege and persecutions. Having been present in most institutions of the state among the overwhelmingly Sunni-Muslim population, Copts are not new to the slow process of Islamization that Egypt has been undergoing for the last twenty years. What has been unique to the recent Coptic experience is the forced integration of Shari’a law …

On December 4, 1867, the ninth day of the convention to write a new post-Civil War constitution for the state of Louisiana, delegate Edouard Tinchant rose to make a proposal. Under the Congressional Reconstruction Acts of1867, the voters of Louisiana had elected ninety-eight delegates-half of them men of color-to a constitutional convention charged with drafting a founding document with which the state could reenter the Union. Edouard Tinchant was a twentysix- year-old immigrant to New Orleans, principal of a school for freed children on St. Claude Avenue. Having made something of a name for himself as a Union Army veteran …
Benchmarking Accessibility And Public Transport Network Performance In Copenhagen And Perth, Jan Scheurer
Benchmarking Accessibility And Public Transport Network Performance In Copenhagen And Perth, Jan Scheurer
World Transit Research
As a result of rapid metropolitan growth, Perth is poised to overtake Denmark’s capital Copenhagen in terms of population size within this decade. The city’s ‘coming of age’ has also sparked a fundamental rethink about how urban transport is organised: during the past twenty years, Perth gradually shifted from a system of near-universal automobility towards the emergence of at least a core network of competitive public transport, including some of Australia’s pioneering efforts at integrating land uses around multimodal accessibility.
Copenhagen is one of Europe’s lowest-density cities and does not stand out among its neighbours for an extraordinarily successful public …

The Occurrence Of Chestnut Lamprey (Lchthyomyzon Castaneus; Pisces: Petromyzontidae) In The Chariton River In South-Central Iowa, Mark K. Flammang, John R. Olson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
In the mid-1990s, Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Fisheries Bureau biologists began receiving reports from anglers of a parasitic lamprey attached to fish taken immediately downstream from Rathbun Lake on the Chariton River in south-central Iowa; these reports have continued to present. In 2002, the IDNR received and identified a chestnut lamprey (Ichthyomyzon castaneus Girard) from an angler who removed the lamprey from a common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus) he captured. This record was the first for a lamprey from the Chariton River drainage in Iowa. Five additional specimens of chestnut lamprey have been collected and identified …

The Vascular Flora Of Boone County, Iowa (2005-2008), Jimmie D. Thompson
The Vascular Flora Of Boone County, Iowa (2005-2008), Jimmie D. Thompson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A vascular plant survey of Boone County, Iowa was conducted from 2005 to 2008 during which 1016 taxa (of which 761, or 75%, are native to central Iowa) were encountered (vouchered and/or observed). A search of literature and the vouchers of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium (ISC) revealed 82 additional taxa (of which 57, or 70%, are native to Iowa), unvouchered or unobserved during the current study, as having occurred in the county. This total of 1098 taxa (979 species, 57 varieties, 39 subspecies, 23 hybrids) places Boone County first in vascular plant richness among 18 published county inventories …
Identity, Language Practices And Ideologies Among Nepali-Bhutanese In West Michigan, Trevor Dewaard, Kathryn Remlinger
Identity, Language Practices And Ideologies Among Nepali-Bhutanese In West Michigan, Trevor Dewaard, Kathryn Remlinger
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
The languages that we use are a result of our identities and the social contexts and related roles in which we participate. The language practices of one small community of ethnic Nepali-Bhutanese who were revoked citizenship in Bhutan, expelled into refugee camps in Nepal for nearly twenty years, and who now reside in Grand Haven, Michigan were of interest here. Identity, Language Practices and Ideologies among Nepali-Bhutanese in West Michigan builds on previous research that examines the relationship between language choice and socio-cultural factors such gender, age, language proficiency, education, citizenship, and context among multi-lingual speakers (Baquedano-López 2009, Booth 2009, …
Consciousness And Society: Societal Aspects And Implications Of Transpersonal Psychology, Harry T. Hunt
Consciousness And Society: Societal Aspects And Implications Of Transpersonal Psychology, Harry T. Hunt
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Although transpersonal psychologies of self realization emphasize individual
development, earlier shamanic traditions also showed a central societal aspect and group based
consciousness. Indeed, many have understood the transpersonal movement as developing
towards an abstract globalized neo-shamanism. That altered states of consciousness, whether
as integrative realizations of the numinous or as dissociative “hypnoid” states, could be felt
and shared collectively was a familiar concept to the first generation of sociologists, who saw
all consciousness as social and dialogic in form. Durkheim, in particular, foresaw a globalized
spirituality of the future, his “cult of man,” in which modern individuation would progress
to …

A few years ago, I was presenting at a workshop in electronic records management for state agencies in Arizona. Many in the crowd came from agencies that had done little or no thinking about how they would manage their electronic records. They had basic questions, like ―How long do I need to keep email?‖
