Background- Although the therapeutic potential of bone marrow-derived stromal stem cells (BMSC) has been demonstrated in different experimental models of ischemic stroke, it remains unclear how stem cells (SC) induce neuroprotection following stroke. In this study, we describe a novel method for isolating BMSC that infiltrate postischemic brain tissue and use this method to identify the genes that are persistently activated or depressed in BMSC that infiltrate brain tissue following ischemic stroke. Methods- Ischemic strokes were induced in C57BL/6 mice by middle cerebral artery occlusion for 1 h, followed by reperfusion. BMSC were isolated from H-2 Kb-tsA58 (immortomouse™) mice, and …

Background: An alarming portion of patients develop persistent or chronic pain following surgical procedures, but the mechanisms underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain states are not fully understood. In general, endocannabinoids (ECBs) inhibit nociceptive processing by stimulating cannabinoid receptors type 1 (CB1) and type 2 (CB2). We have previously shown that intrathecal administration of a CB2 receptor agonist reverses both surgical incision-induced behavioral hypersensitivity and associated over-expression of spinal glial markers. We therefore hypothesized that endocannabinoid signaling promotes the resolution of acute postoperative pain by modulating pro-inflammatory signaling in spinal cord glial cells. …
Inhomogeneity-Induced Spin Current In Atomic And Condensed Matter Systems, Bailey Hsu
Inhomogeneity-Induced Spin Current In Atomic And Condensed Matter Systems, Bailey Hsu
Theses and Dissertations
I derive and apply quantum propagator techniques to atomic and condensed matter systems. I observe many interesting features by following the evolution of a wavepacket. In atomic systems, I revisit the Stern-Gerlach effect and study the spin dynamics inside an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The results I obtained are not exactly the same as the textbook description of the effect which is usually a manifestation of a perfect space and spin entanglement. This discovery can provide insight on more reliable quantum computation device designs. In condensed matter systems, the doping concentration inhomogeneity leads to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. This makes it …
A Case Study Of Network Design For Middle East Water Distribution, Rachel Bullene
A Case Study Of Network Design For Middle East Water Distribution, Rachel Bullene
Theses and Dissertations
The Middle Eastern region encompassing Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Territories (West Bank and Gaza) is an arid region with fast growing populations. Adequate and equitable access to water for all the people of the region is crucial to the future of Middle East peace. However, the current water distribution system not only fails to provide an adequate and equitable allocation of water, but also results adverse impacts on the environment. This project involves building a mathematical model to aid decision-makers in designing an optimal water distribution network. A new method for incorporating uncertainty in optimization that is based on …

K+ Channel Openers Restore Verapamil-Inhibited Lung Fluid Resolution And Transepithelial Ion Transport, Dong Yun Han, Hong Guang Nie, Xiu Gu, Ramesh C. Nayak, Xue Feng Su, Jian Fu, Yongchang Chang, Vijay Rao, Hong Long Ji
Translational Neuroscience
Background: Lung epithelial Na+ channels (ENaC) are regulated by cell Ca2+ signal, which may contribute to calcium antagonist-induced noncardiogenic lung edema. Although K+ channel modulators regulate ENaC activity in normal lungs, the therapeutical relevance and the underlying mechanisms have not been completely explored. We hypothesized that K+ channel openers may restore calcium channel blocker-inhibited alveolar fluid clearance (AFC) by up-regulating both apical and basolateral ion transport. Methods: Verapamil-induced depression of heterologously expressed human αβγ ENaC in Xenopus oocytes, apical and basolateral ion transport in monolayers of human lung epithelial cells (H441), and in vivo alveolar fluid clearance were measured, respectively, using …

The northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is geologically diverse basin, described as the most complex continental slope region in the world. Regional topography of the slope consists of basins, knolls, ridges, and mounds derived from the dynamic adjustments of salt and the introduction of large volumes of sediment over long time scales. More than 99% of the sea floor in the GOM consists of soft sediment made up of various mixtures of primarily silt and clay. These wide-spread soft bottom communities are described in reports from major MMS studies by Gallaway et al. (1998) and Rowe and Kennicutt (2009). Relative …

Theses and Dissertations
Faith community nursing is one of the newest specialized practices of professional nursing. A faith community nurse is an actively registered professional nurse, who serves as a paid or volunteer staff member in a faith community. The faith community nurse promotes health and wholism of the faith community, its groups, families, and individual members. A faith community, as in a church, synagogue or mosque, is an organization of individuals and families who share common beliefs, values, religious doctrine, and faith practices that influence their lives. The faith community functions as a client system for the faith community nurse. The purpose …

The Economic And Environmental Effects Of An Eu Ban On Illegal Logging Imports. Insights From A Cge Assessment, Francesco Bosello, Ramiro Parrado, Renato Rosa
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Illegal logging is widely recognized as a major economic problem and one of the causes of environmental degradation. Increasing awareness of its negative effects has fostered a wide range of proposals to combat it by major international conservation groups and political organizations. Following the 2008 US legislation which prohibits the import of illegally harvested wood and wood products, the European Union (EU) is now discussing a legislation proposal which would ban illegal timber from the EU market. In this study we use the ICES computable general equilibrium model to estimate the reallocation of global demand and timber imports following the …

Synthesis Of Polyethylene/Starch Hybrids Using Aqueous Mini Emulsion Polymerization, Brinda Shah
Theses
Sustainability regarding the most produced plastic, polyethylene, was the main motivation factor behind research of this thesis. The aim was to synthesize hybrids of polyethylene and starch in an aqueous mini emulsion polymerization process using single-site catalysts. Two types of water soluble starches were applied: potato and hydroxyethyl starch. A trifluoromethane bearing nickel enolate catalyst and a 5-halo 3-methoxy salicyl aldiminate nickel pyridyl catalyst (with Cl and Br as halogen atoms) were used as polymerization catalysts, the latter two known to results in higher molecular weight polymer. The first catalyst turned to be sufficiently active with increased loads of starch …

Which Way Was I Going? Contextual Retrieval Supports The Disambiguation Of Well Learned Overlapping Navigational Routes, Thackery I. Brown, Robert S. Ross, Joseph B. Keller, Michael E. Hasselmo, Chantal E. Stern
Psychology
Groundbreaking research in animals has demonstrated that the hippocampus contains neurons that distinguish betweenoverlapping navigational trajectories. These hippocampal neurons respond selectively to the context of specific episodes despite interference from overlapping memory representations. The present study used functional magnetic resonanceimaging in humans to examine the role of the hippocampus and related structures when participants need to retrievecontextual information to navigate well learned spatial sequences that share common elements. Participants were trained outside the scanner to navigate through 12 virtual mazes from a ground-level first-person perspective. Six of the 12 mazes shared overlapping components. Overlapping mazes began and ended at distinct …

The Inviolate Home: Housing Exceptionalism In The Fourth Amendment, Stephanie M. Stern
The Inviolate Home: Housing Exceptionalism In The Fourth Amendment, Stephanie M. Stern
All Faculty Scholarship
The ideal of the inviolate home dominates the Fourth Amendment. The case law accords stricter protection to residential search and seizure than to many other privacy incursions. The focus on protection of the physical home has decreased doctrinal efficiency and coherence and derailed Fourth Amendment residential privacy from the core principle of intimate association. This Article challenges Fourth Amendment housing exceptionalism. Specifically, I critique two hallmarks of housing exceptionalism: first, the extension of protection to residential spaces unlikely to shelter intimate association or implicate other key privacy interests; and second, the prohibition of searches that impinge on core living spaces …

Predation Analysis And The Ftc’S Case Against Intel, Daniel A. Crane
Predation Analysis And The Ftc’S Case Against Intel, Daniel A. Crane
Law & Economics Working Papers
The Federal Trade Commission's pending antitrust case against Intel challenges a number of Intel's discounting and rebating practices. The Commission appears poised to apply a cost-price test to the challenged practices, but proposes to include "fixed sunk costs" in the appropriate measure of cost. This paper explains the importance of using cost-price screens to assess unilaterally imposed prices and analyzes the futility of including sunk costs in the relevant cost measure.

Organic Cation Transporter Preferentially Expressed In Hematopoietic Cells And Leukemias And Uses Thereof, Jeffrey A. Moscow, Xin Lu, Craig Jordan
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Patents
A novel organic cation transporter (OCT) gene, OCT 6, and use thereof is described. The OCT6 gene is preferentially expressed in human hematopoietic tissues, including CD34+ cells and leukemia cells. Its narrow tissue distribution, substrate specificity, and close homology to other cell membrane transporters make OCT6 an attractive target for the treatment of myeloid diseases.

This paper reviews the current data on the use of the first approved intravenous ibuprofen product for the management of post-operative pain and fever in the United States. The management of acute and post-operative pain and fever with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) is well documented. A search in Medline and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts of articles until the end of November 2009 and references of all citations were conducted. Available manufacturer data on file were also analyzed for this report. Several randomized controlled studies have demonstrated the opioid-sparing and analgesic effects of 400 and 800 mg doses of intravenous ibuprofen in …

Peru: Camisea Gas Pipeline Inaugurate After 20 Years, Notisur Writers
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
Twenty years after the Camisea natural-gas fields in the Peruvian department of Cuzco were discovered, President Alejandro Toledo has inaugurated the pipeline that will bring the gas from the interior to Lima and the Pacific coast. The president and his ministers say the revenues generated by the sale and distribution of gas will be an economic windfall for Peru and will revolutionize energy consumption for the country's citizens. But as the Toledo government celebrates the pipeline opening as a historic moment in the economic life of Peru, environmental and indigenous groups say the project will do significant harm to the …

South American Leaders Propose Massive Trans-Amazonian Gas Pipeline From Venezuela Through Brazil And Argentina, Notisur Writers
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has pledged to build a natural-gas pipeline that would stretch from his country to Argentina. He has met with Argentine President Nestor Kirchner and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to begin a preliminary-planning process for the megapipeline, although energy-industry analysts have expressed doubts about the economic viability of such a gigantic project and environmental groups have fears that its construction would damage the Amazonian ecosystem. The project would run between 8,000 km and 10,000 km and would supposedly require an investment of US$20 billion, though cost estimates have varied widely.
