Annual Meeting At Chadron

Nebraska Bird Review

Sixty-seven members and guests were in attendance at the 111th Annual Meeting of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union held at Camp Norwesca on May 14–16, 2010. The Camp Norwesca campus, located just south of Chadron State Park, proved to be an excellent birding location, providing good views of Evening Grosbeaks and Red Crossbills. Evening Grosbeaks were also found at Chadron State Park and at Beaver Wall in Sheridan Co.

Field trips were led by Wayne Mollhoff, Kathy DeLara, Ann Duey, Alice Kenitz, and Bruce and Donna Walgren. Rain on Saturday morning caused some last-minute changes to the trip itineraries. Among the …

Masculinities In Conflict: Representations Of The Other In Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker González-Allende Jun 2010

Masculinities In Conflict: Representations Of The Other In Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

In this article, I analyze the representation of the Other in three texts that were published during the Spanish Civil War: El infierno azul (1938?), by Republican Isidro R. Mendieta, and two closely related works by Falangist Jacinto Miquelarena: Cómo fui ejecutado en Madrid (1937) and El otro mundo: La vida en las embajadas de Madrid (1938). Although these texts adhere to different political ideologies and are stylistically very divergent, they are similar in their constant criticisms of the enemy. Furthermore, both Republicans and rebels tend to depict the enemy as possessing an inadequate masculinity. He is described, on one …

The three cases on conversion relate to the following issues: the distinction between the tort of conversion and the choice of remedy for purposes of determining the appropriate limitation period, the underlying rationale for conversion that is based essentially on possession of a chattel and finally, the question of whether a temporary certificate of entitlement for the purchase of a car in Singapore may be converted.

Urban-Biased Policies And The Increasing Rural-Urban Expenditure Gap In Vietnam In The 1990s, Eric Fesselmeyer, Kien T. Le Jun 2010

Urban-Biased Policies And The Increasing Rural-Urban Expenditure Gap In Vietnam In The 1990s, Eric Fesselmeyer, Kien T. Le

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

There was a significant and widening rural-urban gap during the economic boom in Vietnam in the 1990s. Using an econometric decomposition, we find that differences in individual characteristics such as education, ethnicity and age are the primary explanation for this widening gap, whereas differences in the returns to these characteristics are the primary explanation for the increase in the gap at higher percentiles. We then argue that government investment policies and the manipulation of price incentives were important factors behind the gap. In particular, we argue that government policies created some benefit to urban dwellers at the expense of rural …

Influence Of Acculturation On Neuropsychological Assessment In Middle Easterners, Eunice E. Kwon Jun 2010

Influence Of Acculturation On Neuropsychological Assessment In Middle Easterners, Eunice E. Kwon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Due to influx of immigrants in the United States, it has become essential in cross cultural research to consider cultural variables such as cultural orientation, cultural identity, and acculturation in order to better understand cultural influences on psychological processes and assessment outcomes (Cuellar, 1998). However, there are very few studies that have actually looked at how culture influences neuropsychological test performance (Feltcher-Janzen, Strickland, & Reynolds, 2000). Therefore, in order to better assess culturally diverse individuals and to validly interpret the findings, a conceptual model developed by Betancourt and collaborators (Betancourt & Fuentes, 2001; Betancourt, Hardin, & Manzi, 1992; Betancourt & …

Newborn Infants Learn During Sleep, William P. Fifer, Dana L. Byrd, Michelle Kaku, Inge-Marie Eigsti, Joseph R. Isler, Jillian Grose-Fifer, Amanda R. Tarullo, Peter D. Balsam

Publications and Research

Newborn infants must rapidly adjust their physiology and behavior to the specific demands of the novel postnatal environment. This adaptation depends, at least in part, on the infant’s ability to learn from experiences. We report here that infants exhibit learning even while asleep. Bioelectrical activity from face and scalp electrodes was recorded from neonates during an eye movement conditioning procedure in which a tone was followed by a puff of air to the eye. Sleeping newborns rapidly learned the predictive relationship between the tone and the puff. Additionally, in the latter part of training, these infants exhibited a frontally maximum …

Jefferson Meets Coase: Land-Use Torts, Law And Economics, And Natural Property Rights, Eric R. Claeys Jun 2010

Jefferson Meets Coase: Land-Use Torts, Law And Economics, And Natural Property Rights, Eric R. Claeys

Notre Dame Law Review

This Article questions how well standard economic analysis justifies the land-use torts that Ronald Coase popularized in The Problem of Social Cost. The Article compares standard economic analyses of these torts against an interpretation that follows from the natural-rights morality that informed the content of these torts in their formative years. The “feffersonian” natural-rights morality predicts the contours of tort doctrine more determinately and accurately than “Coasian” economic analysis. The comparison teaches at least three important lessons. First, a significant swath of doctrine, Jeffersonian natural-rights morality explains and justifies important tort doctrine quite determinately. Second, this natural-rights morality complements corrective …

Philosophy Of Modernity And Development In Jamaica, Novella Z. Keith, Nelson W. Keith Jun 2010

Philosophy Of Modernity And Development In Jamaica, Novella Z. Keith, Nelson W. Keith

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Philosophy of Modernity and Development in Jamaica" Novella Z. Keith and Nelson W. Keith postulate that a combined philosophico-practical inquiry is necessary to reduce the systemic asymmetries found in the North-South divide and to promote global interdependence. Proceeding from a deconstruction of European-inflected modernity, Keith and Keith sketch an alternative epistemology of uncertainty and unknowability and illustrate aspects of these epistemologies in theories and practices of modernization and its counter movements, dependency, and underdevelopment while also using them to discuss current practices of an NGO they created, Edu-Tourism , to bridge global divides as experienced in Jamaica. …

Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas Jun 2010

Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Haitian Zombie, Myth, and Modern Identity" Kette Thomas analyzes texts by Zora Neale Hurston, Alfred Metraux, and Wade Davis. In these narratives we are re-introduced to the zombie not as a metaphor for lost consciousness, but, rather, as a common system that replaces personal subjectivity with an influence alien to our natural development. The discourse on subjectivity has become a central focus in the modern era but attention to fiction in "third world" cultures is neglected because they are studied almost exclusively through historical, political, sociological, or anthropological lenses or because their collective identities leads scholars to …

Grounding Language In Action And Perception: From Cognitive Agents To Humanoid Robots, A Cangelosi Jun 2010

Grounding Language In Action And Perception: From Cognitive Agents To Humanoid Robots, A Cangelosi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this review we concentrate on a grounded approach to the modeling of cognition through the methodologies of cognitive agents and developmental robotics. This work will focus on the modeling of the evolutionary and developmental acquisition of linguistic capabilities based on the principles of symbol grounding. We review cognitive agent and developmental robotics models of the grounding of language to demonstrate their consistency with the empirical and theoretical evidence on language grounding and embodiment, and to reveal the benefits of such an approach in the design of linguistic capabilities in cognitive robotic agents. In particular, three different models will be …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Current research into ocean acidification is mainly being carried out using short-term experiments whereby CO2 levels are manipulated in aquaria and enclosures. We have adopted a new approach in our studies of the effects of ocean acidification on Mediterranean marine biodiversity by using volcanic carbon dioxide vent systems as ‘natural laboratories’ as they cause long-term changes in seawater carbonate chemistry. A range of organisms, including macroalgae, seagrasses, invertebrates, and selected scleractinians and bryozoans have now been investigated in a shallow area located off the island of Ischia (Castello Aragonese, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Our in situ observations give support to concerns, …

The Political Mobilization Of Corporate Directors: Socio-Economic Correlates Of Affiliation To European Pressure Groups, Matthew Bond, Siana Glouharova, Nicholas Harrigan Jun 2010

The Political Mobilization Of Corporate Directors: Socio-Economic Correlates Of Affiliation To European Pressure Groups, Matthew Bond, Siana Glouharova, Nicholas Harrigan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Business has played a central role in the debate over Britain's place in the European Union. This paper examines the socio-economic characteristics of directors of Britain's largest corporations who affiliated either to Business for Sterling or Britain in Europe. It reports associations between directors' social backgrounds and their probabilities of affiliation. Elite university education, club membership, wealth and multiple directorships were all associated with higher propensities to affiliate. The associations are consistent with the idea that directors' social resources allow them to overcome collective action problems as well as supplying them with the motivations to affiliate. They also indicated that …

Engaging The Engagers: Implications For The Improvement Of Extension Work Design, William S. Weyhrauch, Satoris S. Culbertson, Maura J. Mills, Clive J. Fullager

Journal of Extension

County Extension agents from the Midwest were surveyed on a variety of psychological variables. Differences among agents in the fields of Family and Consumer Science (FCS), Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), and 4H Youth Development (4HYD) were examined as well as differences among highly and lesser engaged agents. Results showed that FCS agents had higher levels of dedication, absorption, and work-family facilitation. ANR agents reported greater work-role salience than other areas and lower family-role salience. Highly engaged agents reported experiencing greater work-family facilitation, positive affectivity, and psychological capital. Implications for design and management of Extension work are discussed.

Assessing Ground Safety Knowledge Of North Carolina 4-H Horse Program Participants, Courtney H. Beck, John Rayfield, Jim Flowers, David Jones Jun 2010

Assessing Ground Safety Knowledge Of North Carolina 4-H Horse Program Participants, Courtney H. Beck, John Rayfield, Jim Flowers, David Jones

Journal of Extension

The study reported here sought to benchmark current levels of horse ground safety among participants in the North Carolina 4-H Horse Program. By understanding current levels of horse ground safety, programming can be developed to increase safety in this sport. Sixty-three horse camp participants were assessed on the safety skills in four separate areas: leading safety, stall safety, grooming safety, and total safety score. Camp participants posted the highest scores on stall safety and the lowest scores on leading safety. Further research is needed to pinpoint other safety areas that are often neglected in horse and other livestock events.

Education Needs Of Michigan Farmers, Muari Suvedi, Eunseong Jeong, John Coombs Jun 2010

Education Needs Of Michigan Farmers, Muari Suvedi, Eunseong Jeong, John Coombs

Journal of Extension

In 2008 MSU Extension evaluated their program to identify the major areas of educational need for Michigan farmers and agribusiness operators. Surveys were mailed to a stratified random sample from Michigan Agricultural Statistics Service records of dairy, livestock, swine, cash crops, fruit, vegetable, and nursery/greenhouse producers. Findings show that marketing of agricultural products and agrichemical use were continuing areas of educational need for Michigan farmers. Respondents also indicated need for more educational materials in the areas of farm management, production skills, environmental issues, sustainable agriculture, biotechnology, and small farm management.

Immunocontraception In Male Feral Swine Treated With A Recombinant Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Vaccine, Tyler A. Campbell, Michelle R. Garcia, Lowell A. Miller, Martha A. Ramirez, David B. Long, Jean-Baptiste Marchand, Fergal Hill Jun 2010

Immunocontraception In Male Feral Swine Treated With A Recombinant Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Vaccine, Tyler A. Campbell, Michelle R. Garcia, Lowell A. Miller, Martha A. Ramirez, David B. Long, Jean-Baptiste Marchand, Fergal Hill

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Objective: To determine if a recombinant gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine is a potential immunocontraceptive agent for juvenile male feral swine.

Results: As expected, a single dose of GonaCon vaccine reduced testes mass, serum testosterone, and percent normal tubules, and restricted sperm development at each stage. These reductions in reproductive development were associated with elevated GnRH antibodies. The single injection of rGnRH was not as effective in reducing these reproductive parameters; however, the two-dose injection of rGnRH was as effective as the single injection of GonaCon.

A Review Of Existing And Potential New World And Australasian Vertebrate Pesticides With A Rationale For Linking Use Patterns To Registration Requirements, Charles T. Eason, Kathleen A. Fagerstone, John D. Eisemann, Simon Humphrys, Jeanette R. O’Hare, Steven J. Lapidge Jun 2010

Lapidge

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Registration is a necessarily sophisticated evaluation process applied to vertebrate pesticide products. Although conducted to minimize any potential impacts upon public health, the environment and food production, the all-encompassing process of registration can stifle innovation. Vertebrate pesticides are rarely used to control pest animals in food crops. In contrast to agrochemicals, relatively small amounts of vertebrate pesticides are used (50.1%), usually in solid or paste baits, and generally by discrete application methods rather than by broad-scale spray applications. We present a hierarchy or sliding scale of typical data requirements relative to application techniques, to help clarify an evolving science-based approach …

Interactive Kinds, Muhammad Ali Khalidi Jun 2010

Interactive Kinds, Muhammad Ali Khalidi

Publications and Research

This paper examines the phenomenon of 'interactive kinds' first identified by Ian Hacking. An interactive kind is one that is created or significantly modified once a concept of it has been formulated and acted upon in certain ways. Interactive kinds may also 'loop back' to influence our concepts and classifications. According to Hacking, interactive kinds are found exclusively in the human domain. After providing a general account of interactive kinds and outlining their philosophical significance, I argue that they are not confined to the human realm, but that they can also occur elsewhere. Hence, I conclude by arguing that interactive …
