Factors Influencing Parasite-Related Supression Of Mating Behavior In The Isopod Caecidotea Intermedius, Kimberly Mormann
Factors Influencing Parasite-Related Supression Of Mating Behavior In The Isopod Caecidotea Intermedius, Kimberly Mormann
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Parasites with indirect life cycles often facilitate changes in their intermediate hosts in ways that increase the likelihood of transmission to their definitive hosts. Acanthocephalan infections typically correlate with altered pigmentation, antipredatory behavior, and changes in mating behavior in arthropod intermediate hosts that increase risks of predation by definitive vertebrate hosts. Additionally, these changes have been shown to associate with the developmental stage of the parasite which facilitates the likelihood of survival in the final host. These changes have been proposed to due to direct manipulation by the parasite, host counteradaptation to minimize the costs of infection, or are an …
Playing From Memory: Essays On Music In Life, Tamara Ghattas
Playing From Memory: Essays On Music In Life, Tamara Ghattas
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
In five personal essays, this creative-writing project delves into several of the author’s musical experiences, reflecting on the ways in which music informs and illuminates our lives and helps us to forge our identities. As a whole, the essays explore questions such as, What can our attraction to different instruments tell us about ourselves as individuals and about our cultures? How should artists balance the desire for critical approval with the impetus to explore the joy of creating, regardless of an audience? Is music, fundamentally, a private or a shared experience? Specific topics covered include the accordion, the carillon, a …

Thomas Aquinas, The Real Distinction Between Esse And Essence, And Overcoming The Conceptual Imperialism, Andrew Thomas Lazella
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
"Thomas Aquinas, The Real Distinction Between Esse and Essence, and Overcoming the Conceptual Imperialism of Metaphysics" treats the relation between thought and being within medieval metaphysics, especially as it relates to the distinction between essence and existence. The dissertation argues against a prominent strand of distinction between whatness (i.e., essence) and thatness (i.e., existence) constitutes a rupture with the dominant essentialism of metaphysics. I contend such a distinction, which would make existence into an act of being irreducible to the categories of conceptual thought and knowledge, introduces a signifier that, in its primary and proper signification of God, deprives creates …
The Global Philanthropist: A Qualitative Donor Analysis Of International Charitable Giving In America, Mandy A. Sharp
The Global Philanthropist: A Qualitative Donor Analysis Of International Charitable Giving In America, Mandy A. Sharp
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents the results of interviews with a selective sample of 21 international donors to examine the cause of their decision to donate internationally. Findings from this sample illustrate that international donors score higher on the scale of empathetic concern and identify with international causes through education, language, travel, and charitable solicitation from a trusted individual. Diaspora giving is also a significant factor in international charitable giving, as is the reputation and accountability of organizations. Findings determine that new international donors can be cultivated by examining the identification theory of care, empathy, religion and international orientation.

Hispanic students are vastly underrepresented in computing during a time when the Hispanic population in the U.S. is growing dramatically. By 2020, Hispanics will account for 50% of the workers in California. And, by 2050, the Hispanic population is projected to triple in the United States with 25% of the U.S. population being of Hispanic origin. The College of Engineering (CoE) at San José State University proposed a new approach for recruiting Hispanic students into computing disciplines and careers through the Hispanic Computer Brigade (HCB) initiative. By forming HCBs in two local high schools, we aimed to inspire and engage …

Cell-Mediated Elastic Matrix Regeneration Toward Regression Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Carmen Gacchina
Cell-Mediated Elastic Matrix Regeneration Toward Regression Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Carmen Gacchina
All Dissertations
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are typically fusiform (symmetric) dilations of the aortic wall most commonly arising below the renal arteries. The progression is typically associated with an activated smooth muscle cell (SMC) phenotype, diminished density of mature medial elastic fibers, and an elevated presence of matrix-degrading enzymes (e.g., matrix-metalloproteases; MMPs), which may ultimately lead to vessel rupture. Currently, no surgical or non-surgical methods are available to regress AAAs via regeneration of new elastin matrices to regain normal vessel contour, particularly due to the inherently poor elastin synthesis by adult vascular cells and absence of methods to stimulate the same. Previously, …

Endotoxemia from sepsis can injure the gastrointestinal tract through mechanisms that have not been fully elucidated. We have shown that LPS induces an increase in gastric permeability in parallel with the luminal appearance of secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) and its product, lysophosphatidylcholine (lyso-PC). We proposed that sPLA2 acted on the gastric hydrophobic barrier, composed primarily of phosphatidylcholine (PC), to degrade it and produce lyso-PC, an agent that is damaging to the mucosa. In the present study, we have tested whether lyso-PC and/or sPLA2 have direct damaging effects on the hydrophobic barriers of synthetic and mucosal surfaces. Rats were administered LPS …
Synthesis, Characterisation And Antimicrobial Activity Of Novel Phosphine Stablised Silver (1) Dicarboxylate Complexes, Vidya Dixit
Doctoral
The α, ω-dicarboxylic acids HOOC-(CH2)n-COOH (where n = 1-11) reacted smoothly with [Ag(CH3COO)] to yield 11 novel silver dicarboxylate complexes. These silver dicarboxylates were reacted with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) in 1:2.5, 1:4 and 1:6 molar ratios resulting in the isolation of 30 novel silver dicarboxylate triphenylphosphine derivatives. X-ray crystal structures for nine of these complexes were determined showing a variation in the structural motifs across the series with mononuclear, dinuclear, polynuclear and polymeric species being generated. When the 11 novel silver dicarboxylate complexes were reacted with bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) in a 1:2 molar ratio 11 novel complexes were isolated. The complexes were …

Investment Perspective According To Behavioral Finance Science, Saad Ali Al-Anzi
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
The first thing that comes to mind is the highly important question of whether there were some effects of human behavior and its fluctuations on the theories of the efficient market and the contemporary investment portfolio. According to what has been said by the proponents of these two theories; when the optimal return is realized, the efficiency of the market is achieved in terms of perfect information on prices and risk that supposed to be predetermined in a rational way. he other question that imposed here is “at what time people should be rational in their investments in the security …
Sexual Selection And Plumage In The Polymorphic White-Throated Sparrow, Nathan Rathbun
Sexual Selection And Plumage In The Polymorphic White-Throated Sparrow, Nathan Rathbun
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Feather coloration has been known to be connected with sexual selection for many years. It also provides an opportunity to study evolution, focusing on sexual selection and natural selection. Plumage is affected by both of these forces and the equilibrium is where these forces balance. The white-throated sparrow gives us a unique opportunity to observe the effects of the different strengths of these forces within a species. First, I established that there were differences in plumage characteristics between the morphs and sexes. White males had the brightest white and darkest black feathers. White females and tan males were the next …

Book Review - Intellectual Property Rights And The Life Science Industries: Past, Present, And Future, Chidi Oguamanam
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Our so-called post-industrial society is one whose axial feature is the interac- tion between computer-driven digital and life science-driven bio-technologies. The primary legal mechanism that undergirds the allocation of rights in this new infor- mation-centred epoch is intellectual property. Perhaps only a few industrial sectors have benefitted more from the dynamics of that interaction than the pharmaceutical industry. Perhaps also, only a few industrial sectors have fully appreciated and opti- mally exploited the power of intellectual property than that sector. How did that happen? How has it continued to unfold, and what does the future hold for the continued co-evolution …

In East African small-holder farming of maize, the cattle forage legume, Desmodium uncinatum is used as an intercrop due to its allelopathic inhibition of parasitism by Striga hermonthica, an obligate parasitic weed that can devastate the maize crop. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the root extract of D. uncinatum revealed isoschaftoside to be the main compound in the most potent fraction inhibiting growth of germinated S. hermonthica radicles. Bioassays repeated with isoschaftoside isolated from a different plant source, Passiflora incarnata, proved it to be a biologically active component. Analysis of the root exudates produced by hydroponically grown D. uncinatum showed isoschaftoside to …
I Do Like Them But I Don’T Watch Them: Preschoolers’ Use Of Age As An Accounting Device In Consumption Evaluations, Olivia Freeman
I Do Like Them But I Don’T Watch Them: Preschoolers’ Use Of Age As An Accounting Device In Consumption Evaluations, Olivia Freeman
Conference papers
This paper derives from a broader study of children’s consumer culture, specifically an investigation into how preschoolers employ commercial discourses as the building blocks of social selves and relations. Age-based repertoires are found to colour the various discourses produced. ‘Age’ is conceptualised as something that is made sense of for and by children through their utilisation of toys, media, consumables and other commercial artefacts. The ‘choosing child’ is addressed in empirical terms to reveal the social significance of ‘doing’ consumption related evaluations in the focus group setting. A CA-informed discourse analytic approach is utilised to focus on one aspect of …
The Evolution Of Birkat Al-Fil (From The Fatimids To The Twentieth Century), Nadia Fouad Younes
The Evolution Of Birkat Al-Fil (From The Fatimids To The Twentieth Century), Nadia Fouad Younes
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will be exploring in depth the urban fabric of the area formerly known as Birkat al-Fil, or Elephant Pond, and its modern day transformation into areas such as Hilmiyya and Hilmiyya al-Jadida. Though the pond was eventually filled in the middle of the nineteenth century, the area will still be discussed in terms of its development within the modern era. I have defined the pre-twentieth century area of Birkat al-Fil by historical landmarks such as Bab al-Khalq to the north, the Mosque of Sultan Hasan to the east, and Sayyida Zaynab to the west. The pond area that …

Prediction Of Protein Subcellular Localization: A Machine Learning Approach, Kyong Jin Shim
Prediction Of Protein Subcellular Localization: A Machine Learning Approach, Kyong Jin Shim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Subcellular localization is a key functional characteristic of proteins. Optimally combining available information is one of the key challenges in today's knowledge-based subcellular localization prediction approaches. This study explores machine learning approaches for the prediction of protein subcellular localization that use resources concerning Gene Ontology and secondary structures. Using the spectrum kernel for feature representation of amino acid sequences and secondary structures, we explore an SVM-based learning method that classifies six subcellular localization sites: endoplasmic reticulum, extracellular, Golgi, membrane, mitochondria, and nucleus.

Canada's Current Position With Respect To Sound Marks Registration: A Need For Change?, Marie-Jeanne Provost
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This paper analyses and criticizes Canada’s position on sound marks registration in order to recommend the ways in which Canadian policy-makers could further act in order to advance this area of law. The first part of this paper exposes the fundamental concepts of trade-marks as they are necessary to the comprehension of the problems surrounding the registration of sound marks. In the second part, legal considerations associated with the registration of sound marks are discussed. More specifically, the visual requirement, the issue of “use,” the concept of distinctiveness and the question of overlap with copyright are assessed. In the third …

Maize is becoming the major food crop around Lake Victoria. Major constraints to its production are Striga, stem borer, and declining soil fertility. Innovative integrated technologies have been developed: the 'push-pull' system (intercropping with Desmodium and surrounded by Napier grass), soybean and Crotalaria rotations, and imidazolinone-resistant (IR) maize seed. In 12 demonstration trials in four villages in Siaya and Vihiga districts (Kenya) and two villages in Busia (Uganda) in 2003 and 2004, 504 farmers evaluated all cropping systems and a mono-cropped continuous maize, each cropped with IR or local maize, and supplemented or not with fertilizer, totaling 16 treatments. Farmers …

Effect Of Low-Magnitude, High-Frequency Vibration On Osteocytes In The Regulation Of Osteoclasts, Esther Lau, Saja Al-Dujaili, Axel Guenther, Dawei Liu, Liyun Wang, Lidan You
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
Osteocytes are well evidenced to be the major mechanosensor in bone, responsible for sending signals to the effector cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) that carry out bone formation and resorption. Consistent with this hypothesis, it has been shown that osteocytes release various soluble factors (e.g. transforming growth factor-β, nitric oxide, and prostaglandins) that influence osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities when subjected to a variety of mechanical stimuli, including fluid flow, hydrostatic pressure, and mechanical stretching. Recently, low-magnitude, high-frequency (LMHF) vibration (e.g., acceleration less than < 1 × g, where g = 9.81 m/s2, at 20–90 Hz) has gained much interest as studies …

The Prairie Naturalist
The little blue heron (Egretta caerulea) is native to North America and most commonly breeds along the coast of the southeastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico through Central America and into South America (Rodgers and Smith 1995). In North America, little blue herons rarely nest outside their coastal range. However, nesting has been documented at several locations in the northern plains including Brown, Kingsbury, and Charles Mix counties, South Dakota (Naugle et al. 1996, Tallman et al. 2002); Pope County, Minnesota (Green and Janssen 1975); and possibly in southeastern Saskatchewan (Nero and Lein 1971, Smith et al. 1996). …

ats are efficient predators of night-flying insects (Whitaker 1993), particularly in urban, agricultural, and forested areas in South Dakota (Kiesow 2004). In South Dakota, 6 bat species are considered rare and presently monitored by the South Dakota Natural Heritage Program (SDNHP; South Dakota Natural Heritage Program 2002). Because bats serve a vital ecosystem function there is an increased need to conserve bats and their habitats. Hence, the objectives of this project were to determine bat species richness along the Missouri River in central South Dakota. We conducted surveys of bats using mist-nets and acoustic detection from early May to early …

Masculinities In Conflict: Representations Of The Other In Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker González-Allende
Spanish Language and Literature Papers
In this article, I analyze the representation of the Other in three texts that were published during the Spanish Civil War: El infierno azul (1938?), by Republican Isidro R. Mendieta, and two closely related works by Falangist Jacinto Miquelarena: Cómo fui ejecutado en Madrid (1937) and El otro mundo: La vida en las embajadas de Madrid (1938). Although these texts adhere to different political ideologies and are stylistically very divergent, they are similar in their constant criticisms of the enemy. Furthermore, both Republicans and rebels tend to depict the enemy as possessing an inadequate masculinity. He is described, on one …
