Re-Writing The Bhabhian “Mimic Man”: Akin, The Posthuman Other In Octavia Butler’S Adulthood Rites, Aparajita Nanda Jul 2010

Re-Writing The Bhabhian “Mimic Man”: Akin, The Posthuman Other In Octavia Butler’S Adulthood Rites, Aparajita Nanda

English

Cultural critics have sought to define the term posthuman1 as primarily a condition that does away with hierarchical forms of power and control. It recognizes a transformation of the human species into a subject position that moves from an oppositional politics of segregating the human “self” from the “other” to one of acknowledging the “other” as part of the human “self.” 2 With the advent of the posthuman condition comes the need to re-define human rights in a posthuman context. Octavia Butler’s science fiction novel Adulthood Rites3 introduces us to Oankali, gene-trading aliens who travel through space. They …

Prey Selection By Young Green Crabs (Carcinus Maenas), Rock Crabs (Cancer Irroratus) And American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) In The Gulf Of Maine, Joseph Sungail

All Theses And Dissertations

The intertidal zone in the Gulf of Maine supports large populations of three species of decapods. Young green crabs (Carcinus maenas), rock crabs (Cancer irroratus) and American lobsters (Homarus americanus) co-exist in close proximity and forage on similar prey species. Competition for prey resources could have major implications for the populations of these predators. This experimental study focuses on determining the potential for interspecific competition between these decapods for prey resources. Young green crabs (25 - 35 mm carapace width), rock crabs (25 - 35 mm carapace width) and American lobsters (25 - 35 mm carapace length), were collected along …

High-Frequency Electrically Stimulated Skeletal Muscle Contractions Increase P70S6k Phosphorylation Independent Of Known Igf-I Sensitive Signaling Pathways, Sarah Witkowski, Richard M. Lovering, Espen E. Spangenburg Jul 2010

High-Frequency Electrically Stimulated Skeletal Muscle Contractions Increase P70S6k Phosphorylation Independent Of Known Igf-I Sensitive Signaling Pathways, Sarah Witkowski, Richard M. Lovering, Espen E. Spangenburg

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) is hypothesized to be a critical upstream regulator of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-regulated protein synthesis with muscle contraction. We utilized a mouse model that expresses a skeletal muscle specific dominant-negative IGF-I receptor to investigate the role of IGF-I signaling of protein synthesis in response to unilateral lengthening contractions (10 sets, 6 repetitions, 100. Hz) at 0 and 3. h following the stimulus. Our results indicate that one session of high frequency muscle contractions can activate mTOR signaling independent of signaling components directly downstream of the receptor.

Deconstructing The Time-Out: What Do Mothers Understand About A Common Disciplinary Procedure?, Amy K. Drayton Jul 2010

Deconstructing The Time-Out: What Do Mothers Understand About A Common Disciplinary Procedure?, Amy K. Drayton

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Problem behavior is extremely common throughout childhood, and time-out (TO) is one of the most common disciplinary tactics used by parents to address problem behavior. However, despite the prevalence of use and five decades of research demonstrating the efficacy of time-out, parents rate time-out as one of the least useful behavior modification techniques. This discrepancy between parental opinion and empirical data may be due to the fact that all research conducted thus far has used adults highly trained in empirically-supported time-out procedures. No research has examined the degree of similarity between time-out conducted by untrained parents to empirically-supported time-out procedures. …

Do Psychology Researchers Tell It Like It Is? A Microgenetic Analysis Of Research Strategies And Self-Report Accuracy, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Acquiring research skills is considered to be a highly challenging aspect of developing expertise in the social sciences. Because instruction and mentoring in these skills are typically grounded in the self-report of researchers, difficulties in learning the material may be due to the content and accuracy of these explanations. Using a mixed-method, microgenetic design, this study examines the explanations of problem-solving processes by researchers along a continuum of expertise during simulated experiment design and subsequent data analysis. Findings indicate that participants’ self-explanations are largely inaccurate. Further, frequency of inaccurate statements is positively associated with the frequency of abstract cognitive processes, …

Pharmaceutical Patent Bargains: The Brazilian Experience, Bruno Salama, Daniel Benoliel Jul 2010

Pharmaceutical Patent Bargains: The Brazilian Experience, Bruno Salama, Daniel Benoliel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

In the backdrop of the strict patent regime flatly adopted by the World Trade Organization (WTO) for all countries, a few countries constantly challenge this system through aggressive patent bargains. Within the pharmaceutical sector, noticeably, some countries now threaten to issue or otherwise actually issue compulsory licenses that may sway large pharmaceutical companies into selling drugs with large discounts or into granting voluntary licenses domestically. That is conspicuously the negotiation strategy adopted by Brazil in its negotiations with big international pharmaceutical companies.

This paper explains Brazil's aggressive bargaining approach based on an analysis of two aspects of its political economy. …

Non-Native Invasive Aquatic Plant And Mussel Survey Of Six Umpqua National Forest Area Lakes, Mark Sytsma, Rich Miller, Rupa Shrestha Jul 2010

Non-Native Invasive Aquatic Plant And Mussel Survey Of Six Umpqua National Forest Area Lakes, Mark Sytsma, Rich Miller, Rupa Shrestha

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Six lakes and ponds located within or near the Umpqua National Forest were surveyed for non-native aquatic plants and mussels during August, 2009. A diverse assemblage of native plants was identified along with one possible non-native aquatic plant hybrid in Herberts Pond. The possible hybrid between the non-native species Myriophyllum spicatum and the native species M. sibiricum requires genetic analysis for identification. Water chemistry is suitable for the establishment of invasive mussels in Buckeye Lake; however, no zebra or quagga mussel veligers were detected in any of the lakes.

Loss Of Individual Micrornas Causes Mutant Phenotypes In Sensitized Genetic Backgrounds In C. Elegans, John L. Brenner, Kristen L. Jasiewicz, Alisha F. Fahley, Benedict J. Kemp, Allison L. Abbott Jul 2010

Loss Of Individual Micrornas Causes Mutant Phenotypes In Sensitized Genetic Backgrounds In C. Elegans, John L. Brenner, Kristen L. Jasiewicz, Alisha F. Fahley, Benedict J. Kemp, Allison L. Abbott

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, noncoding RNAs that regulate the translation and/or stability of their mRNA targets. Previous work showed that for most miRNA genes of C. elegans, single-gene knockouts did not result in detectable mutant phenotypes. This may be due, in part, to functional redundancy between miRNAs. However, in most cases, worms carrying deletions of all members of a miRNA family do not display strong mutant phenotypes. They may function together with unrelated miRNAs or with non-miRNA genes in regulatory networks, possibly to ensure the robustness of developmental mechanisms. To test this, we examined worms lacking individual miRNAs in …

Lianas Suppress Tree Regeneration And Diversity In Treefall Gaps, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson Jul 2010

Lianas Suppress Tree Regeneration And Diversity In Treefall Gaps, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Treefall gaps are hypothesized to maintain diversity by creating resource‐rich, heterogeneous habitats necessary for species coexistence. This hypothesis, however, is not supported empirically for shade‐tolerant trees, the dominant plant group in tropical forests. The failure of gaps to maintain shade‐tolerant trees remains puzzling, and the hypothesis implicated to date is dispersal limitation. In central Panama, we tested an alternative ‘biotic interference’ hypothesis: that competition between growth forms (lianas vs. trees) constrains shade‐tolerant tree recruitment, survival and diversity in gaps. We experimentally removed lianas from eight gaps and monitored them for 8 years, while also monitoring nine un‐manipulated control gaps. Removing …

Legal Liability, Intellectual Property And Genetically Modified Crops: Their Impact On World Agriculture, Kanchana Kariyawasam

Washington International Law Journal

The use of genetic engineering and biotechnology in agriculture has attracted worldwide attention over the past decade. This technology has raised highly controversial issues and considerable international debate over the liabilities associated with crops containing genetically modified organisms (“GMOs”). In particular, the extension of intellectual property protection to GMOs, especially genetically modified crops, has produced one of the most controversial and strenuous debates of recent times. After looking briefly at some of the key features, advantages and disadvantages of GM crops, this paper outlines the debate over the associated legal liability issues. This article also examines the major elements of …

Public Welfare, Artistic Values, And The State Ideology: The Analysis Of The 2008 Japanese Supreme Court Obscenity Decision On Robert Mapplethorpe, Yuri Obata Jul 2010

Public Welfare, Artistic Values, And The State Ideology: The Analysis Of The 2008 Japanese Supreme Court Obscenity Decision On Robert Mapplethorpe, Yuri Obata

Washington International Law Journal

On February 19, 2008, the Japanese Supreme Court delivered a decision declaring that a collection of photographs by the late American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe did not violate obscenity laws in Japan. The fact that the Japanese Supreme Court publicly found close-up and detailed images of male genitalia in Mapplethorpe’s work no longer obscene perhaps makes the decision a landmark one since the present-day restriction of sexually explicit expression in Japan respected the obscenity standard from the 1957 precedent, the Lady Chatterley’s Lover decision, which ruled that the translation of D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover was obscene. However, close reading …

Mechanisms Of Augmented Coronary Artery Constriction Following Exposure To Diesel Exhaust, Tom W. Cherng Jul 2010

Mechanisms Of Augmented Coronary Artery Constriction Following Exposure To Diesel Exhaust, Tom W. Cherng

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Numerous epidemiology studies demonstrate that acute increases in air pollutants correlate with an increase in cardiovascular disease-related mortality. The pollutant diesel exhaust (DE) has been shown to impair both flow-mediated and agonist-induced dilation of the brachial artery, used as a surrogate for coronary artery function. It is speculated that enhanced sensitivity to the endogenous vasoconstrictor ET-1 impairs cardiac blood flow and contributes to the immediate onset of myocardial ischemia and infarction in humans following DE exposure. In addition, impaired endothelium-dependent dilation can be improved with the restoration of nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) activity. We therefore sought to determine the …

The Role Of Bcl-2 Modifying Factor (Bmf) In Airway Epithelial Cell Death, Amelia H. T. Unione Jul 2010

The Role Of Bcl-2 Modifying Factor (Bmf) In Airway Epithelial Cell Death, Amelia H. T. Unione

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

One of the components that obstruct the airway in asthma is the sudden and increased secretion of mucus from metaplastic mucous cells in small airways. Because previous studies have shown that the resolution of mucous cell metaplasia (MCM) during prolonged exposure of mice to allergen is mediated by IFN gamma and the Bcl-2 family of proteins, we investigated the regulation and the role of a pro-apoptotic BH3 domain-only protein, Bmf, in airway epithelial cells (AECs) treated with IFN gamma. We hypothesize that Bmf is crucial for IFN gamma-induced cell death. Our findings show that IFN gamma suppressed Bmf expression in …

- Immunosupression Of T-Dependent Antibody Responses By Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Arsenic In Spleen Cells From C57bl/6j Mice, Qian Li Jul 2010

- Immunosupression Of T-Dependent Antibody Responses By Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Arsenic In Spleen Cells From C57bl/6j Mice, Qian Li

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and arsenic are both toxic contaminants that are widely distributed in the environment. Previous studies have shown that certain levels of PAHs and arsenic exposure individually can lead to immune suppression and carcinogenesis. Co-exposures to these two classes of chemicals are commonly seen in the environment. However, no previous studies have evaluated the immunotoxicity following simultaneous exposure to both arsenic and PAHs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to define the immunotoxicity of selected PAHs and arsenic in a murine spleen cell system, and to elucidate possible toxicological mechanisms. Spleen cells were isolated from male …

Changes In C-Myb Activity During Proliferation, Anita M. Quintana Jul 2010

Changes In C-Myb Activity During Proliferation, Anita M. Quintana

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

c-myb encodes a transcription factor and is the cellular parent of the v-myb oncogene, which causes acute myeloid leukemia in chickens and mice. Truncation or deletion can unmask the oncogenic potential of the human c-myb gene and recent reports have established that the human c-myb locus is subject to translocation and duplication in human pediatric T-ALL. c-Myb is expressed in all proliferating hematopoietic progenitor cells and has been implicated in some solid tumors, such as breast and colon. Evidence suggests that c-Myb activity is cell type specific and cell cycle dependent. For example, c-Myb interacts with cyclin D1 and CDK6 …
