Encouraging Student Wellness: An Expanded Role For Counselor Educators, Thomas Foster
Encouraging Student Wellness: An Expanded Role For Counselor Educators, Thomas Foster
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Graduate school can present as a time of both self-fulfillment and stress for students; students who lack psychosocial resources and must fulfill other life roles (e.g. employee, spouse, caregiver) during graduate school can experience significant stress levels that can interfere with their academic and personal life. However, students can make healthy choices about how to live, and over time, these choices can develop into a wellness lifestyle. The Wellness Cube Model (WCM) serves as an academic intervention with the purposes to: (a) infuse wellness content and experiences into a counseling program, (b) expose students to wellness, and (c) help both …
Inferiorizing Judicial Review: Popular Constitutionalism In Trial Courts, Ori Aronson
Inferiorizing Judicial Review: Popular Constitutionalism In Trial Courts, Ori Aronson
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The ongoing debates over the legitimacy of judicial review-the power of courts to strike down unconstitutional statutes-as well as the evolving school of thought called "popular constitutionalism, " are characterized by a preoccupation with the Supreme Court as the embodiment of judicial power This is a striking shortcoming in prevailing constitutional theory, given the fact that in the United States, inferior courts engage in constitutional adjudication and in acts of judicial review on a daily basis, in ways that are importantly different from the familiar practices of the Supreme Court. The Article breaks down this monolithic concept of "the courts" …
Charity And Information: Correcting The Failure Of A Disjunctive Social Norm, Brian Broughman, Robert Cooter
Charity And Information: Correcting The Failure Of A Disjunctive Social Norm, Brian Broughman, Robert Cooter
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Charitable donations fund social goods that the state and markets undersupply. Despite widespread belief in the importance of private charity, most Americans donate little or nothing. Experiments in behavioral economics show that anonymity, not human nature, causes low contributions. Anonymity poses a particular challenge for charity because of the special character of the obligation. Charity is a disjunctive social norm, meaning the obligation is owed to "A or B or C or ...". Disclosure of each individual's aggregate conduct is necessary for the effectiveness of any disjunctive social norm. To revitalize charity we propose a public registry where each taxpayer …
The Dickey Bird Scientists Take Charge: Science, Policy, And The Spotted Owl, Thomas R. Wellock
The Dickey Bird Scientists Take Charge: Science, Policy, And The Spotted Owl, Thomas R. Wellock
History Faculty Scholarship
In 1992, the Forest Service adopted a new operating policy, Ecosystem Management, which minimized the agency's timber production goals in favor of a more ecologically balanced view of its responsibilities. In explaining this shift, scholars have dismissed the possibility of internal reform, arguing that the Service could not change without irresistible external pressure from environmental activists and new public values supporting biodiversity. Viewing the Service's shift through the lens of the spotted owl controversy, however, demonstrates the important role agency culture played in instigating bureaucratic change. The Service's evolution stemmed from the rising influence of its scientists in policy formation. …

The images remain indelible: On a chilly January day in 2009, a United States Airways Airbus A320 departed from New York’s LaGuardia Airport. About five miles out, flying at 2,000 feet, it collided with a flock of Canada geese (Branta canadensis), severely damaging the plane’s engines. Within minutes of the collision the pilot safely conducted an emergency landing on the Hudson River. All 155 passengers survived.
Regulation Of The G2/M Transition In Rodent Oocytes, Stephen M. Downs
Regulation Of The G2/M Transition In Rodent Oocytes, Stephen M. Downs
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Regulation of maturation in meiotically competent mammalian oocytes is a complex process involving the carefully coordinated exchange of signals between the somatic and germ cell compartments of the ovarian follicle via paracrine and cell–cell coupling pathways. This review highlights recent advances in our understanding of how such signaling controls both meiotic arrest and gonadotropin-triggered meiotic resumption in competent oocytes and relates them to the historical context. Emphasis will be on rodent systems, where many of these new findings have taken place. A regulatory scheme is then proposed that integrates this information into an overall framework for meiotic regulation that demonstrates …

Diurnal Rhythms Of Behavior And Brain Mrna Expression For Arginine Vasotocin, Isotocin, And Their Receptors In Wild Amargosa Pupfish (Cyprinodon Nevadensis Amargosae), Sean C. Lema, Lauren J. Wagstaff, Nina M. Gardner
Biological Sciences
Amargosa pupfish (Cyprinodon nevadensis amargosae) occupy remote desert habitats that vary widely in environmental conditions from day to night. In this study, die! patterns of behavior were documented for pupfish in their natural habitat, and examined relative to changes in the abundance of mRNAs encoding prepro-arginine vasotocin (pro-VT), prepro-isotocin (pro-IT), three distinct vasotocin receptors (V1a1, V1a2, and V2), and an isotocin receptor (ITR) in the brain. The behavior of wild pupfish varied diurnally, with frequent aggression from 12:00 to 15:00 h and courtship and spawning most common between 15:00 and 19:00h. Transcript abundance for pro-VT in the brain …

Situational Analysis Of Household Energy And Biomass Use And Associated Health Burden Of Indoor Air Pollution And Mitigation Efforts In Pakistan, Zafar Fatmi, Asma Rahman, Ambreen Kazi, Muhammad Masood Kadir, Nalini Sathiakumar
Community Health Sciences
Biomass fuel burning leads to high levels of suspended particulate matter and hazardous chemicals in the indoor environment in countries where it is in common use, contributing significantly to indoor air pollution (IAP). A situational analysis of household energy and biomass use and associated health effects of IAP was conducted by reviewing published and un-published literature about the situation in Pakistan. In addition to attempt to quantify the burden of ill health due to IAP, this paper also appraises the mitigation measures undertaken to avert the problem in Pakistan. Unfortunately, IAP is still not a recognized environmental hazard in Pakistan …
Growing Biserrula To Improve Grain And Livestock Production, Angelo Loi, Natalie Hogg, Clinton Revell, Diana Fedorenko
Growing Biserrula To Improve Grain And Livestock Production, Angelo Loi, Natalie Hogg, Clinton Revell, Diana Fedorenko
Bulletins 4000 -
Biserrula pelecinus is a new genus of pasture legume which was developed for commercial agriculture by a team of Perth-based legume pasture scientists in the early 1990s. Biserrula is an annual pasture legume that is found in natural grasslands of the Mediterranean Basin, frequently on acidic soils derived from granite. It was this feature that first caught the eye of researchers who were attempting to develop species that could tolerate the soil stresses of acidity and low moisture-holding capacity. These stresses are common in WA and when they occur together they are problematical for the survival of annual medics and …

Location, Location, Location: Important For Jet-Lagged Circadian Loops, Mary E. Harrington
Psychology: Faculty Publications
It is now believed that frequent jet lag or shifts of daily rhythms caused by rotating shift work can lead to deleterious health outcomes. Indeed, many serious health problems, including breast cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease, have been linked to an occupational history of shift work. This has heightened interest in better understanding the biological responses to jet lag and shift work, with the hope that this will pave the way to developing compounds that can help people avoid their negative health consequences. In this context, a report in this issue of the JCI takes us to a new level …
Nuances In A Panethnic Southwest Landscape, Angelica Solares
Nuances In A Panethnic Southwest Landscape, Angelica Solares
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Urban landscapes of places with large immigrant populations are transformed as immigrants bring a different use of space with them. Mexican immigrants throughout the southwestern United States have physically transformed the landscape, and these trans-formed places often result in spaces that foster socialization and assert cultural identity. This thesis proposes that a three-stage cycle of spatial production exists in Mexicano communities in the United States, and describes the authors three-stage cycle of spatial production model in detail. The cycle begins with the formation of an enclave, followed by the transformation of the urban landscape which then results in one of …

Identification Of Man-Made Hazards In Aneth Chapter, Navajo Nation, Utah, Eugenia L. Quintana
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Identification of man-made hazards is an initial step in planning recommendations for mitigation of man-made hazards. This project entailed a participatory process that engaged the local community in identifying man-made hazards specific to Aneth. The man-made hazards have challenged the community in managing potential damages, physical, environmental and economic losses due to pollution and contamination from man-made hazards. The development of this professional project has revealed some pathways to environmental protection for the Aneth Chapter, which could be the first Navajo Nation Chapter to move towards the development of a plan for mitigation of man-made hazards based upon the identification …

Renewable Energy Projects In Southwestern Deserts – Update On Our Involvement, Scott R. Abella
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
Like many in the conservation field, we have a good understanding of the urgent need for alternative energy sources, but also of the negative environmental tradeoffs of placing renewable energy developments on vast tracts of public lands in southwestern deserts as currently envisioned. We also understand political and economic reasons, good or bad, for not doing some obvious things that make sense for renewable energy like placing solar arrays on building tops in cities, within multi-use contexts such as crops, and on already impacted land when alternative energy projects (right or wrong) are to be placed on public land.
Synthesis Study: Development Of An Electronic Detection And Warning System To Prevent Overheight Vehicles From Impacting Overhead Bridges, Joseph V. Sinfield
Synthesis Study: Development Of An Electronic Detection And Warning System To Prevent Overheight Vehicles From Impacting Overhead Bridges, Joseph V. Sinfield
JTRP Technical Reports
Overheight vehicle impacts with bridges are surprisingly common. The damage from collisions can range from minor to severe, and there is also evidence that some bridges are impacted multiple times, leading to the potential for cumulative damage effects. Thus there is a clear need to attempt to prevent overheight vehicle collisions with bridges.
This Synthesis Study provides a review of solutions that exist to detect and forewarn overheight vehicles and thereby prevent a collision, and specifically examines the breadth of available overheight vehicle detection technologies, the commercial availability of such equipment, and the experience of relevant DOTs with installed and …

Philosophy And Theology: Notes On Diachronic Personal Identity, Christopher Kaczor
Philosophy Faculty Works
The author discusses different theories related to philosophy and theology. He cites the four rival theories of diachronic personal identity mentioned by researcher Bertha Alvarez Manninen, which explores the genetic, animalism, and psychological account. The author also mentions the argument of philosophy professor of Michael Tooley regarding the role of the brain and personal identity. Furthermore, he mentions several studies that suggest ways on how to cure personality disorder.

The Merciful Executioner: Spectacles Of Sexual Danger And National Reunification In The George Stinney Case, 1944, Annette Louise Bickford
Southern Anthropologist
The literal and metaphoric defining of postbellum America drew on a politics of exclusion, giving wider force to struggles over national identity and citizenship encoded by race, and inflected by sexual discourses. Despite emancipation claims, men of African descent were increasingly excluded from a citizenship based on notions of “whiteness,” and this was reflected in the shift from the spectacle of vigilante lynching to the spectacular trial. I use the case of George Stinney to illustrate how juridical law, like extra-legal lynching, affirmed a national identity articulated through the legitimation and restoration of white rule, perceived to be under threat. …
Environmental Factors And Patterns Of Behaviour In Zoo-Housed Sumatran Tigers, Panthera Tigris Sumatrae, Kimberley Jayne
Environmental Factors And Patterns Of Behaviour In Zoo-Housed Sumatran Tigers, Panthera Tigris Sumatrae, Kimberley Jayne
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This study investigated how increased environmental predictability in captivity can impact upon animal behaviour. ‘Busyness’ was piloted as a method of measuring activity in relation to environmental factors and observations were conducted on the behaviour of 2 zoo-housed Sumatran tigers, Panthera tigris sumatrae. Graphical analysis revealed the tigers to show increased Busyness leading up to the time they were taken off-show, possibly indicating anticipation of this event. Both animals displayed stereotyped pacing within specific enclosure sections. The female tiger showed increased pacing leading up to the time she was taken off-show, whereas the male showed the opposite. Suggestions were made …
The Effects Of Consonantal Specificity, Articulatory Phonetics And Prosody In Young Infants' Lexical Acquisition, Victoria Farley
The Effects Of Consonantal Specificity, Articulatory Phonetics And Prosody In Young Infants' Lexical Acquisition, Victoria Farley
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The present study was designed to investigate the role of consonants within word-initial consonantal contrasts, articulatory phonetics (involving place of articulation and voicing features) and prosody in young infants’ lexical acquisition. The participants were twenty-four 25-month-old infants, who were recruited from the Babylab database at The University of Plymouth. All children participated in a modified name-categorisation task and the actual experiment involved the use of eight disyllable paired pseudowords. The results found that this age group were unable to learn phonetically similar pseudowords that had a consonantal contrast and were unable to distinguish between word-initial contrasts that used articulatory phonetic …
The Effect Marina Design And Recreational Boating Has On The Spread Of Non Indigenous Species, Amy Brock-Morgan
The Effect Marina Design And Recreational Boating Has On The Spread Of Non Indigenous Species, Amy Brock-Morgan
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The spread of Non Indigenous Species (NIS) is a global problem and has major implications for the pattern of local biodiversity and ultimately the functioning of ecosystems. Invasive NIS are recognised as a major threat to biodiversity in article 8 on the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). Once NIS are introduced controlling them is expensive, time-consuming and can have negative effects on native biota. It recent years, the marine environment has seen an increase in recreational boating, international shipping and aquaculture but to date only the latter two have received international attention. In 2008 legislation changed to prohibit the use …
Characteristics Of Wool Fibres From Mule Sheep, Nicola Bishop
Characteristics Of Wool Fibres From Mule Sheep, Nicola Bishop
The Plymouth Student Scientist
A study was conducted to find out if there were any differences in the characteristics of wool fibres from mule sheep in sheep of different ages. Wool samples were taken from 91 North of England Mule Sheep from Seale Hayne Farm in Newton Abbot, Devon. The hypothesis tested was that there are no differences in the characteristics of wool fibres (greasy weight, clean weight, dirt content, mean length and mean diameter) due to the age of the sheep. The age of each sheep was determined by the number of pairs of incisor teeth located on their lower jaw according to …
The Mechanisms Of Marine Bacterial Interactions, Grace Phillips
The Mechanisms Of Marine Bacterial Interactions, Grace Phillips
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Bacteria are found in numerous habitats within the vast marine realm. Many marine bacteria live together as a biofilm which allows them to closely interact and intimately influence each other‟s lives, mainly by the production of extracellular compounds such as antibiotics and exopolysaccharides. Coordination of the biofilm and communication between bacteria is controlled by a mechanism known as quorum sensing in which signal molecules called autoinducers are released and detected, resulting in an alteration of behaviour. These activities ultimately have implications on other organisms; controlling populations of invertebrates and algae, and affecting the health of eukaryotes, a major cause for …
Abundance And Diversity Of Anuran Species In Danum Valley, Sabah, Borneo, Abigail Porter
Abundance And Diversity Of Anuran Species In Danum Valley, Sabah, Borneo, Abigail Porter
The Plymouth Student Scientist
1. Anurans are important components of tropical ecosystems; however, the biodiversity of these species is under threat due to the rapid deforestation of Southeast Asian forests. 2. Abundances and numbers of individuals of anuran species from three different sites were surveyed. One site being that of a relatively undisturbed primary Dipterocarp forest, the other two being disturbed habitats, a secondary forest recovering from logging and a drainage ditch which has formed a pool site. 3. Species abundance and numbers of individuals was significantly different P<0.05 between the three sites. The primary forest site showed higher mean abundances of species and individuals of anuran species, with the secondary forest having the lowest abundances and the pool site having an intermediate value. 4. Variables of temperature and light levels were shown to have an impact upon frog species, with the highest temperatures and light readings found in the sites with less species and individuals. pH was neutral for all three sites so was not seen as a consequence effecting anurans. 5. The differences in anuran abundances and species in the three sites may indicate that environmental factors may be having detrimental impacts on anurans. 6. The need to census amphibians has never been more urgent than it is now. Among herpetologists, there is a growing awareness that amphibians are declining and becoming extinct in many parts of the world.
The Microbial Role In Carbon Cycling Within Seagrass Sediments, Heather Guy
The Microbial Role In Carbon Cycling Within Seagrass Sediments, Heather Guy
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Seagrasses are an important feature of coastal systems worldwide, capable of fixing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into cellular material, potentially helping to alleviate rising carbon dioxide levels. However, the capacity of seagrass beds to act as carbon sinks is largely dependent on the amount of organic matter accumulated within the sediments following transformations by the microbial community. The microbial role in carbon cycling within seagrass sediments has been poorly researched, most likely because the importance of marine microbes in ocean cycling processes was only recently recognized, due to key advancements in molecular biology. This review examines …

The glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) family of serine/threonine kinases consists of 2 highly related isoforms, alpha and beta. Although GSK-3beta has an important role in cardiac development, much remains unknown about the function of either GSK-3 isoform in the postnatal heart. Herein, we present what we believe to be the first studies defining the role of GSK-3alpha in the mouse heart using gene targeting. Gsk3a(-/-) mice over 2 months of age developed progressive cardiomyocyte and cardiac hypertrophy and contractile dysfunction. Following thoracic aortic constriction in young mice, we observed enhanced hypertrophy that rapidly transitioned to ventricular dilatation and contractile dysfunction. …
