Insecta Mundi
A comprehensive revision of the Subfamily Parandrinae (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) from the Hawaiian, Australasian, Oriental, and Japanese regions is presented. Seven (7) new genera are described: Komiyandra, Melanesiandra, Papuandra, Storeyandra, Hawaiiandra, Caledonandra, and Malukandra. All known, indigenous species from these regions are assigned to new genera resulting in the following new combinations: Komiyandra janus (Bates, 1875), K. shibatai (Hayashi, 1963), K. formosana (Miwa and Mitono, 1939), K. lanyuana (Hayashi, 1981), Melanesiandra striatifrons (Fairmaire, 1879), M. solomonensis (Arigony, 1983), Caledonandra austrocaledonica (Montrouzier, 1861), C. passandroides (Thomson, 1867), Hawaiiandra puncticeps (Sharp, 1878), Malukandra heterostyla (Lameere, 1902), Storeyandra frenchi (Blackburn, 1895), and Papuandra araucariae …
A Computationally-Assisted Methodology For Rapid Exploration Of Design Possibilities In Conceptual Design, Garrett J. Barnum
A Computationally-Assisted Methodology For Rapid Exploration Of Design Possibilities In Conceptual Design, Garrett J. Barnum
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most important decisions in the product development process is the selection of a promising design concept because of the large influence it has on the final product. A thorough search for the best design is a significant challenge to designers, who are trying to balance the objective and subjective performance of the designs they create. In this thesis, a computationally-assisted design methodology is developed and used in the early stages of design to more thoroughly search for designs that perform well according to objective physics-based models and subjective designer-specific preference-based models. The method presented herein uses an …
Anti-Depressive And Anti-Obesity Changes Following Either Dietary Isoflavone Treatment Or Injection Treatment With The Isoflavonoid Equol: Positive Response Dependent On Animal Age And Ovarian Status In Female Long Evans Rats, Crystal Blake
Theses and Dissertations
Two conditions associated with ovarian depletion are increased potential for depressive episodes and increased abdominal weight gain. In five different experiments we examined the effect of soy-containing diets or equol injections on depression, serotonin levels, weight gain (BW) and white adipose tissue (WAT) deposition of female Long-Evans rats in various stages of life. Rats were intact, ovariectomized or experienced natural ovarian failure (NOF). While this paper will present each experiment, only experiment 5 is outlined here due to space limitations. From conception the rats were exposed to either a soy-rich (Phyto-600) or low-soy diet (Phyto-low). Animals experienced NOF at approximately …

The Suzuki Diaries: Sustainability In Action, Thomas A. Ipri
Library Faculty Research
Given the number of gloom and doom environmental films flooding the market, the more optimistic approach of The Suzuki Diaries: Sustainability in Action is refreshing. David Suzuki, geneticist, environmentalist, author and broadcaster, takes his daughter, Sarika, around Europe to investigate some of the more proactive approaches various countries have take that lessen their impact on the environment. Suzuki is quick to note that many of these projects were not done to help the environment, per se, but done for practical, economic and quality of life reasons.
Chronic Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation And A High-Fat Diet Have An Additive Effect On Mitochondria In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Natasha Fillmore
Chronic Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation And A High-Fat Diet Have An Additive Effect On Mitochondria In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Natasha Fillmore
Theses and Dissertations
Factors that stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle include AMPK, calcium, and circulating FFAs. Chronic treatment with either AICAR, a chemical activator of AMPK, or increasing circulating FFAs with a high fat diet increases mitochondria in rat skeletal muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the combination of chronic chemical activation of AMPK and high fat feeding would have an additive effect on skeletal muscle mitochondria levels. We treated Wistar male rats with a high fat diet (HF), AICAR injections (AICAR), or a high fat diet and AICAR injections (HF+AICAR) for six weeks. At the end of …

The Novel Use Of Recombinant Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor (Gm-Csf) To Reverse Cerebral Amyloidosis And Cognitive Impairment In Alzheimer’S Disease Mouse Models: Insights From The Investigation Of Rheumatoid Arthritis As A Negative Risk Factor For Alzheimer’S Disease, Timothy David Boyd
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For many years, it has been known that Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a negative risk factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It has been commonly assumed that RA patients’ usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have helped prevent the onset and progression of AD pathogenesis. Furthermore, experiments in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease have looked to inhibit inflammation, and have demonstrated some efficacy against AD-like pathology in these models. Thus many NSAID clinical trials have been performed over the years, but all have proven unsuccessful in AD patients. This suggests that intrinsic factors within RA pathogenesis itself may …

Quantitative Literacy: Does It Work? Evaluation Of Student Outcomes At Colby-Sawyer College, Benjamin Steele, Semra Kilic-Bahi
Numeracy
Colby-Sawyer College has adopted a mission for quantitative literacy (QL) to give students the “necessary skills to understand and use quantitative information in their personal and professional lives.” We have implemented an across-the-curriculum approach to develop these skills. As part of this QL program, we administer two assessment tests, one in basic mathematical skills and one that applies those skills, plus an attitude survey to both freshmen and seniors. Three years of data show that seniors score about 10 percentage points higher than freshmen on these tests. However, seniors still scored below 55 percent on both tests, and many cannot …
The Brazilian Street Child: A Child Of The Local Community, Rebecca Goulart
The Brazilian Street Child: A Child Of The Local Community, Rebecca Goulart
JCCC Honors Journal
The images of Brazilian slums, and the street children that come from them, are recognized throughout the world. There are two different kinds of kids who make up Brazil’s street children population. The children who work on the streets, returning to their homes in the favelas at night, are referred to as the children ‘on the streets’. These children do odd jobs, such as guarding cars or selling gum. On the other hand, children who live on the streets full time are referred to as the children ‘of the streets’ and are generally involved in some sort of criminal activity. …

Advaita (Non-Dualism) As Metatheory: A Constellation Of Ontology, Epistemology And Praxis, Latha Poonamallee
Advaita (Non-Dualism) As Metatheory: A Constellation Of Ontology, Epistemology And Praxis, Latha Poonamallee
College of Business Publications
Integrating contradictory and mutually exclusive positions is a challenge in building a metatheory. In this paper, I examine how advaita (non-dualism) philosophy is a metatheory. Based on a holistic, non-dualistic ontology, discovery based epistemology, and personal accountability-action-reflection oriented praxis, it provides a useful metatheory for embracing, learning from, and transcending the paradoxes of social life. I use the example of Gandhi as a practitioner of this approach to action and knowledge.
Commons And Cooperatives, Greig De Peuter, Nick Dyer-Witheford
Commons And Cooperatives, Greig De Peuter, Nick Dyer-Witheford
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
In the last decade, the commons has become a prevalent theme in discussions about collective but decentralized control over resources. This paper is a preliminary exploration of the potential linkages between commons and cooperatives through a discussion of the worker cooperative as one example of a labour commons. We view the worker coop as a response at once antagonistic and accommodative to capitalism. This perspective is amplified through a consideration of five aspects of an ideal-type worker cooperativism: associated labour, workplace democracy, surplus distribution, cooperation among cooperatives, and, controversially, links between worker cooperatives and socialist states. We conclude by …
Using Evolutionary Strategies For The Real-Time Learning Of Controllers For Autonomous Agents In Xpilot-Ai, Gary Parker, Michael H. Probst
Using Evolutionary Strategies For The Real-Time Learning Of Controllers For Autonomous Agents In Xpilot-Ai, Gary Parker, Michael H. Probst
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Real-time learning is the process of an artificial intelligence agent learning behavior(s) at the same pace as it operates in the real world. Video games tend to be an excellent locale for testing real-time learning agents, as the action happens at real speeds with a good visual feedback mechanism, coupled with the possibility of comparing human performance to that of the agent's. In addition, players want to be competing against a consistently challenging opponent. This paper is a discussion of a controller for an agent in the space combat game Xpilot and the evolution of said controller using two different …
Application Of Reliability Analysis To Highway Design Problems: Superelevation (E) Design, Left Turn Bay Design-Safety Evaluation And Effect Of Variation Of Peak Hour Volumes On Intersection Signal Delay Performance, Sonny D. Abia
Open Access Dissertations
This research has three parts. Part 1: The Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Street provides 5 methods of superelevation (e) distribution. Many states use methods 2 and 5 for low speed, urban and rural high-speed facilities. Method 5 aims to address speed variations; but is complicated, computationally intractable and may violate design consistency. Design recommendation by NCHRP439 accounts for speed variation, tractable; but is cumbersome along with irregular/step-wise design curves. New reliability based e distribution method is developed that addresses the speed variation; which is simple in determining and evaluating acceptable required e rates. At 95% level of …

A Comparison Of Analytical Methods For Quantifying Denatured Whey Proteins And Their Correlation To Solubility, Michelle D. Allen
A Comparison Of Analytical Methods For Quantifying Denatured Whey Proteins And Their Correlation To Solubility, Michelle D. Allen
Master's Theses
Protein structure affects the bioactivity and functionality of whey protein ingredients in food systems. Bioactivity of whey proteins and their derivatives are highly dependent upon primary, secondary and tertiary structure. The degree of denaturation of whey proteins is an important factor for determining how whey protein ingredients will perform in a food system. Several analytical methods have been developed to quantify protein denaturation of whey proteins. The goal of this project was to use a variety of analytical methods to quantify whey protein denaturation and to evaluate the correlation of denaturation to the functionality of whey protein powders.

Oral Mucositis: The New Paradigms, Rajesh V. Lalla, Douglas E. Peterson
UCHC Articles - Research
Purpose of review
Mucositis has long been viewed as an unavoidable consequence of high-dose chemotherapy and/or radiation. Management has been directed to supportive care including oral pain control, nutritional support, infection treatment and control of diarrhea. While these interventions have been valuable for clinical management, they have not been collectively directed to molecularly targeted prevention and treatment. This review addresses recent advances regarding mucosal injury in cancer patients, with emphasis on symptom clusters, genetically-based tissue susceptibility and risk prediction, imaging technology, and computational biology.
Recent findings
Modeling of symptom clusters in cancer patients continues to mature. Although integration of mucositis …
Early Signals During Cd8+ T Cell Priming Regulate The Generation Of Central Memory Cells, Joshua J. Obar, Leo Lefrancois
Early Signals During Cd8+ T Cell Priming Regulate The Generation Of Central Memory Cells, Joshua J. Obar, Leo Lefrancois
UCHC Articles - Research
The CD8+ T cell response to infection is characterized by the appearance of short-lived (CD127low killer cell lectin-like receptor G 1–high) and memory-precursor (CD127high killer cell lectin-like receptor G 1–low) effector cells. How and when central-memory T (TCM; CD62Lhigh CCR7+) cell and effector-memory T(TEM; CD62Llow CCR7−) cell subsets are established remains unclear. We now show that the TCM cell lineage represents an early developmental branchpoint during the CD8+ T cell response to infection. Central-memory CD8+ T cells could be identified prior to the peak …

Distribution And Ecology Of Invasive Ants, Chad Tillberg, Frank Andrews, Carson Moscoso, Lily Ratliff, Claire Steele, Chris Turpin, Ben Edmonds, Alex Freauff, Erik Grimstad, Sara Grusing
2010 Projects
This project examines exactly how invasive specific types of ants are, and what effect that has on the ecosystem. To do so, most of the research must be compiled for the first time, as there is a lack of knowledge and research on this subject. Through former research, Tillberg finds that there are invasive pavement ants in Oregon state parks, but due to a lack of research on the species, their impact is unknown. The research will follow a paired design, comparing similar areas with and without pavement ants, to discover what differences this invasive species has on habitats.
Modeling And Support Tools For Studying Disease Spread In Livestock Using Networks, Joel Francis, Greg Klotz, Neil Harvey, Deborah Stacey
Modeling And Support Tools For Studying Disease Spread In Livestock Using Networks, Joel Francis, Greg Klotz, Neil Harvey, Deborah Stacey
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The natural occurrence or intentional release of highly contagious agents of livestock disease can have serious consequences for any country’s agricultural economy. Successful control and management of animal disease outbreaks require that adequate response strategies be developed beforehand. Disease spread simulation models are being used by veterinary epidemiologists to evaluate strategies for the control of disease spread. These models enable decision-makers and emergency preparedness personnel to explore many different scenarios to determine the effects of control measures such as vaccination, and study the likely size, duration and cost of outbreaks. This paper presents an overview of livestock disease spread modeling …
