Converting The Participants’ Verbal Expressions Into Design Factors, Neda Ghadir, Dawood M. Garavand, Ali Faraji Jul 2010

Converting The Participants’ Verbal Expressions Into Design Factors, Neda Ghadir, Dawood M. Garavand, Ali Faraji

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The designers usually apply various qualitative and quantitative techniques in investigating users’ desires. Once such techniques are applied, they deal with the difficulties of making the outcome data comprehensible enough to be used in the subsequent steps. This paper presents some encountered complexities of a pilot survey titled “Designing and Implementing an Artificial Design Tool Based on Improved Kansei Engineering”, in an effort to describe the borderline between quantitative and qualitative methods and their transformation point, and a practical solution suggested as co-qual-quant model. Through conducted case study, we have used qualitative methods on the human side (e.g. PPP and …

Experiential, Embedded, Electronic - Integrating Academic Skills Into The Art And Design Curriculum, Alke Gröppel-Wegener Jul 2010

Experiential, Embedded, Electronic - Integrating Academic Skills Into The Art And Design Curriculum, Alke Gröppel-Wegener

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The objective of this paper is to reflect on the possibilities experiential learning offers to the fuller integration of study skills into the undergraduate design curriculum. Undergraduate design courses are experiential at their core. Students are actively engaged in their own learning, constructing it for themselves (often literally). However, this practice needs to be complemented by the ability to critically reflect on these experiences, a knowledge and understanding of its context in the field, as well as the aptitude to communicate these insights. This is where contextual studies and study skills come in. By taking the natural approach of practical …

In Touch With Representation: Iconic, Indexical And Symbolic Signification In Tangible User Interfaces, Gesche Joost, Fabian Hemmert Jul 2010

In Touch With Representation: Iconic, Indexical And Symbolic Signification In Tangible User Interfaces, Gesche Joost, Fabian Hemmert

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper, we discuss the value of semiotics to inquire tangible user interfaces (TUI) in human- computer interaction (HCI). Drawing on Peirce’s three types of representation – icon, index, and symbol (Peirce, Houser, & Kloesel, 1998) – we analyze signification processes in the design of tangible UIs. As a case study, we draw on several prototypical interfaces and analyze their semiotic structure. We focus specifically on three different significations for a similar application on a mobile phone: Displaying a new event on a mobile phone (e.g. an unread text message or a missed incoming call). The aim is to …

Design Naturally, Dealing With Complexity Of Forms In Nature & Applying It In Product Design, Parsa Kamehkhosh, Alireza Ajdari, Yassaman Khodadadeh Jul 2010

Design Naturally, Dealing With Complexity Of Forms In Nature & Applying It In Product Design, Parsa Kamehkhosh, Alireza Ajdari, Yassaman Khodadadeh

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The aesthetic NORMs have formed some presupposes in designers’ minds which don’t let their eyes see the reality of forms in NATURE before their abstracting mind see. They usually reduce complex forms to their basic geometries and proportions, in order to find orders in their complexity and to harmonize them with their design paradigms. We believe that this common vision to the nature, deprive us from perceiving its reality. This paper proposes a new vision to the nature and thereby present nature’s approach to the form issue, and some of its manifestations. These findings which are presented under the title …

Resonance Rather Than Solo: Shaping A Regional Image With Soundscape, Yu-Chiao Lee, Li-Shu Lu Jul 2010

Resonance Rather Than Solo: Shaping A Regional Image With Soundscape, Yu-Chiao Lee, Li-Shu Lu

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As times change, industrialization and urbanization transform the structure of traditional rural society and result in imbalanced development between urban and rural areas. Then, as a result of population outflow and change in industries, rural distinctiveness gradually disappeared. Given that visual text was normally used to shape a regional image, this study further added audio text to enrich rural expression and also adopted the soundscape concept proposed by Murray Schafer (1973). Other than artificial sounds and natural sounds, soundscape also covers memory sounds, image sounds, cultural sounds and social sounds. The study incorporated the ecological triangle developed by Tilly (1974) …

When Artists And Designers Inspire Collective Intelligence Practices: Two Case Studies Of Collaboration, Interdisciplinarity, And Innovation Projects, Isabelle Mahy, Mithra Zahedi Jul 2010

When Artists And Designers Inspire Collective Intelligence Practices: Two Case Studies Of Collaboration, Interdisciplinarity, And Innovation Projects, Isabelle Mahy, Mithra Zahedi

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Current mainstream collaborative processes and practices are not always fit to deal with the complexity of our society and the problems it generates. The lack of complexity-based practices for empowering collective intelligence conditions makes it difficult to address and solve intertwined multi stakeholders situations. As a disciplinary attitude can rarely succeed to solve complex and wicked problems, there is relevance and a need to question today’s mainstream approaches to collaboration and innovation. We explore this issue by asking how design can be of help to lead this reflection and to translate collaboration into pragmatic activities. We propose that by focusing …

A Didactical Framework To Experiment The Potential Of Visual Languages In Engaging Social Complexity, Francesca Valsecchi, Paolo Ciuccarelli, Donato Ricci, Giorgio Caviglia Jul 2010

A Didactical Framework To Experiment The Potential Of Visual Languages In Engaging Social Complexity, Francesca Valsecchi, Paolo Ciuccarelli, Donato Ricci, Giorgio Caviglia

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Development models often apply expert knowledge to social needs using a top-down approach, thus rendering these models insufficient in coping with the issues of a complex world. Effective changes in social systems arise from iterative and dialogic processes in which information and knowledge are exchanged between heterogeneous actors, building a common background that enables a shared hypothesis. The design approach involves the ability to select results from various disciplinary fields, activating a trans-disciplinary circulation of concepts. Designers should use their skills to facilitate the emergence of a system, rather than concentrating on finding solutions to specific and well-identified problems. The …

L’Utilisation Du Geste Dans Des Réunions De Conception Architecturale, Willemien Visser Jul 2010

L’Utilisation Du Geste Dans Des Réunions De Conception Architecturale, Willemien Visser

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Insights Into Insight – How Do In-Vitro Studies Of Creative Insight Match The Real-World Complexity Of In-Vivo Design Processes?, Stefan Wiltschnig, Balder Onarheim Jul 2010

Insights Into Insight – How Do In-Vitro Studies Of Creative Insight Match The Real-World Complexity Of In-Vivo Design Processes?, Stefan Wiltschnig, Balder Onarheim

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents approaches to study insight in the context of creative (design) processes. Evidence for the discrepancies between experimental and observational studies of insight moments is collected from the literature. Implications for conducting integrative research that addresses the complexity of real world design environments are discussed. Preliminary results from two case studies looking for insight moments of design teams working on real world design tasks at a medical appliance manufacturer and within an interior design project are reported. A multi-methodological framework inspired by invivo-in-vitro research together with ethnographic and practice based approaches is developed and applied.

Representation-Phobia And The Complexity Of Embodied Interaction, Thomas Markussen Jul 2010

Representation-Phobia And The Complexity Of Embodied Interaction, Thomas Markussen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In current interaction design research there is a widespread belief that situated action and embodied interaction should replace mental representations in the theoretical account of human cognition. This exclusion of representation is however diagnosed as a sign of representation-phobia by Anderson (2003) who claims that it is misguided. This paper aims to show why and how it can be overcome. Initially, a literature review will show how representation-phobia manifests itself through two different versions in HCI research. On the basis of this I argue that representation-phobia leads to a theoretical dead end. Then, by drawing on semiotics and recent findings …

Designing Contemporary China: National Design Identity At The Crossroads, Wendy Siuyi Wong Jul 2010

Designing Contemporary China: National Design Identity At The Crossroads, Wendy Siuyi Wong

DRS Biennial Conference Series

China is an ancient civilization rapidly developing in a globalized post-modern context. The country now finds itself at a crossroads, with outside ideologies and forces of “Americanization” and “Westernization” competing against its cultural heritage and communist economic system to form a national design identity for contemporary China. This paper uses the rise of modern design in China, design examples from Hong Kong and Taiwan, the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, and Victoria & Albert Museum’s China Design Now exhibit to investigate questions of national identity as they pertain to design. It argues that, with the whole world watching China’s rise …

Population Genetic Diversity And Fitness In Multiple Environments, Jeffrey A. Markert, Denise M. Champlin, Ruth Gutjahr-Gobell, Jason S. Grear, Anne Kuhn, Thomas J. Mcgreevy Jr., Annette Roth, Mark J. Bagley, Diane E. Nacci Jul 2010

Population Genetic Diversity And Fitness In Multiple Environments, Jeffrey A. Markert, Denise M. Champlin, Ruth Gutjahr-Gobell, Jason S. Grear, Anne Kuhn, Thomas J. Mcgreevy Jr., Annette Roth, Mark J. Bagley, Diane E. Nacci

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Background: When a large number of alleles are lost from a population, increases in individual homozygosity may reduce individual fitness through inbreeding depression. Modest losses of allelic diversity may also negatively impact long-term population viability by reducing the capacity of populations to adapt to altered environments. However, it is not clear how much genetic diversity within populations may be lost before populations are put at significant risk. Development of tools to evaluate this relationship would be a valuable contribution to conservation biology. To address these issues, we have created an experimental system that uses laboratory populations of an estuarine …

The Relationship Between Attachment Related Family-Of-Origin Experiences And Sexual Satisfaction In Married Couples, James G. Strait Jul 2010

The Relationship Between Attachment Related Family-Of-Origin Experiences And Sexual Satisfaction In Married Couples, James G. Strait

Theses and Dissertations

This study of married couples examined the relationship between perceptions of attachment related family-of-origin experiences and sexual satisfaction directly and when mediated by marital quality. The sample consisted of 3,953 married couples who responded to the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE). The nested model showed that more positive overall family-of-origin experiences and parent-child relationships were related to higher sexual satisfaction. When adding marital quality as a mediator, overall family-of-origin experience and the parent-child relationship were predictive of higher sexual satisfaction when mediated by marital quality but removed most direct effects to sexual satisfaction. There was a strong positive relationship between marital quality …

The Messages Of The Restoration: A Study Of The Doctrinal Development Of The Missionary Message Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Sheldon Nixon Jul 2010

The Messages Of The Restoration: A Study Of The Doctrinal Development Of The Missionary Message Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Sheldon Nixon

Theses and Dissertations

Proselyting has always been an important part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in recent history the proselyting message has remained primarily the same. But that was not the case in the earliest days of the Church. When Joseph Smith received his First Vision and started to share that experience to others, the proselyting message of the Church was born. But that message, the message of the Restoration, did not linger on that event for too long. In fact the message of the Restoration underwent a series of evolutions and modifications as the Lord continued to …

Testing The Application Of Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem To Contemporary Trade Between Malaysia And Singapore, Andrew Clarke, Kishore G. Kulkarni Jul 2010

Testing The Application Of Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem To Contemporary Trade Between Malaysia And Singapore, Andrew Clarke, Kishore G. Kulkarni

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Since members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) signed the ASEAN Free Trade Area agreement in 1992, trade between Singapore and Malaysia has continued to grow. Historically the economies of these two countries have had different characteristics, however, with Singapore known as a capital abundant country and a world financial center, while Malaysia has traditionally been relatively labor abundant and capital scarce. Because of this sharp contrast in their economies, one would expect that testing the Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem using trade data between Singapore and Malaysia would provide stark evidence of the H-O Theorem. That is to say that …

Agricultural Development In India Since Independence: A Study On Progress, Performance, And Determinants, Amarnath Tripathi, A. R. Prasad Jul 2010

Agricultural Development In India Since Independence: A Study On Progress, Performance, And Determinants, Amarnath Tripathi, A. R. Prasad

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This paper evaluates performance and progress of Indian Agriculture since Independence. In addition, this paper also analyzes sources of agricultural growth and determinants of agricultural production. We use the decomposition test to analyze sources of agricultural growth and the production function approach to analyze determinants of agricultural production over the period 1950/51 through 2005/06. The study indicates that there is scope to increase both net sown area and gross sown area. The decomposition analysis indicates that rising output per hectare is the predominant source of agricultural growth for most of the crops and crop groups. The estimation of aggregate agricultural …

Fluorescence Molecular Tomography: A New Volume Reconstruction Method, Stephen Joseph Shamp Jul 2010

Fluorescence Molecular Tomography: A New Volume Reconstruction Method, Stephen Joseph Shamp

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Medical imaging is critical for the detection and diagnosis of disease, guided biopsies, assessment of therapies, and administration of treatment. While computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and ultra-sound (US) are the more familiar modalities, interest in yet other modalities continues to grow. Among the motivations are reduction of cost, avoidance of ionizing radiation, and the search for new information, including biochemical and molecular processes. Fluorescence Molecular Tomography (FMT) is one such emerging technique and, like other techniques, has its advantages and limitations. FMT can reconstruct the distribution of fluorescent molecules in vivo using near-infrared …

Avirulent Uracil Auxotrophs Based On Disruption Of Orotidine-5′-Monophosphate Decarboxylase Elicit Protective Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Barbara A. Fox, David J. Bzik Jul 2010

Avirulent Uracil Auxotrophs Based On Disruption Of Orotidine-5′-Monophosphate Decarboxylase Elicit Protective Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Barbara A. Fox, David J. Bzik

Dartmouth Scholarship

The orotidine-5'-monophosphate decarboxylase (OMPDC) gene, encoding the final enzyme of the de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway, was deleted using Toxoplasma gondii KU80 knockouts to develop an avirulent nonreverting pyrimidine auxotroph strain. Additionally, to functionally address the role of the pyrimidine salvage pathway, the uridine phosphorylase (UP) salvage activity was knocked out and a double knockout of UP and OMPDC was also constructed. The nonreverting DeltaOMPDC, DeltaUP, and DeltaOMPDC DeltaUP knockout strains were evaluated for pyrimidine auxotrophy, for attenuation of virulence, and for their ability to elicit potent immunity to reinfection. The DeltaUP knockout strain was replication competent and virulent. In …

Interleukin-10 Mediated Autoregulation Of Murine B-1 B-Cells And Its Role In Borrelia Hermsii Infection, Vishal Sindhava, Michael E Woodman, Brian Stevenson, Subbarao Bondada Jul 2010

Interleukin-10 Mediated Autoregulation Of Murine B-1 B-Cells And Its Role In Borrelia Hermsii Infection, Vishal Sindhava, Michael E Woodman, Brian Stevenson, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

B cells are typically characterized as positive regulators of the immune response, primarily by producing antibodies. However, recent studies indicate that various subsets of B cells can perform regulatory functions mainly through IL-10 secretion. Here we discovered that peritoneal B-1 (B-1P) cells produce high levels of IL-10 upon stimulation with several Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands. High levels of IL-10 suppressed B-1P cell proliferation and differentiation response to all TLR ligands studied in an autocrine manner in vitro and in vivo. IL-10 that accumulated in cultures inhibited B-1P cells at second and subsequent cell divisions mainly at the G1/S interphase. …

Development Of Psychometrically Equivalent Speech Recognition Threshold Materials For Native Speakers Of Samoan, Jennifer Lane Newman Jul 2010

Development Of Psychometrically Equivalent Speech Recognition Threshold Materials For Native Speakers Of Samoan, Jennifer Lane Newman

Theses and Dissertations

The speech recognition threshold (SRT) is an important measure, as it validates the pure-tone average (PTA), assists in the diagnosis and prognosis of hearing impairments, and aids in the identification of non-organic hearing impairments. Research has shown that in order for SRT testing to yield valid and reliable measures, testing needs to be performed in the patient's native language. There are currently no published materials for SRT testing in the Samoan language. As a result, audiologists are testing patients with English materials or other materials not of the patient's native language. Results produced from this manner of testing are confounded …

Pcif1 Modulates Pdx1 Protein Stability And Pancreatic Β Cell Function And Survival In Mice, Kathryn C. Claiborn, Mira M. Sachdeva, Corey E. Cannon, David N. Groff, Jeffrey D. Singer, Doris A. Stoffers Jul 2010

Pcif1 Modulates Pdx1 Protein Stability And Pancreatic Β Cell Function And Survival In Mice, Kathryn C. Claiborn, Mira M. Sachdeva, Corey E. Cannon, David N. Groff, Jeffrey D. Singer, Doris A. Stoffers

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The homeodomain transcription factor pancreatic duodenal homeobox 1 (Pdx1) is a major mediator of insulin transcription and a key regulator of the β cell phenotype. Heterozygous mutations in PDX1 are associated with the development of diabetes in humans. Understanding how Pdx1 expression levels are controlled is therefore of intense interest in the study and treatment of diabetes. Pdx1 C terminus–interacting factor-1 (Pcif1, also known as SPOP) is a nuclear protein that inhibits Pdx1 transactivation. Here, we show that Pcif1 targets Pdx1 for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. Silencing of Pcif1 increased Pdx1 protein levels in cultured mouse β cells, and Pcif1 …

Developing Brokered Community Transportation For Seniors And People With Disabilities, Jerry D. Marx, Christie Davis, Caitlyn Miftari, Anne Salamone, Wendy Weise

Social Work

Communities are exploring ways to increase transportation coordination to improve access for seniors. One such effort is a brokered transportation system in which one agency serves as the central point of contact for ride information or actually arranging transportation for clients of multiple programs by use of a combination of transportation services. A team of social work faculty and students from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Social Work Outreach Center, a center that provides service learning opportunities to students, collaborated with a local coalition to investigate the specific transportation needs of the region's senior citizens. A total of 641 …

A Kinesin Motor In A Force-Producing Conformation, Elisabeth Heuston, C. Eric Bronner, F Jon Kull, Sharyn A. Endow Jul 2010

A Kinesin Motor In A Force-Producing Conformation, Elisabeth Heuston, C. Eric Bronner, F Jon Kull, Sharyn A. Endow

Dartmouth Scholarship

Kinesin motors hydrolyze ATP to produce force and move along microtubules, converting chemical energy into work by a mechanism that is only poorly understood. Key transitions and intermediate states in the process are still structurally uncharacterized, and remain outstanding questions in the field. Perturbing the motor by introducing point mutations could stabilize transitional or unstable states, providing critical information about these rarer states.
