One Bridge Too Far: Why The Employee Free Choice Act Has, And Should, Fail, Richard A. Epstein Aug 2010

One Bridge Too Far: Why The Employee Free Choice Act Has, And Should, Fail, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The Employer Free Choice Act has had enjoyed strong academic support. but thus far has been stymied by fierce political resistance to its central positions that first institute a card-check for the selection of a union and then requires mandatory arbitration if the parties cannot agree to a new contract within 130 days of union recognition. This articles critiques the arguments made in support of this fundamental revision of labor law offered by Craig Becker, Benjamin Sachs, and Catherine Fisk & Adam Pulver, all of which purport to show that flaws in the current system of collective bargaining need major …

Picasso Interface For Horizon Simulation Framework, Brian E. Kirkpatrick Aug 2010

Picasso Interface For Horizon Simulation Framework, Brian E. Kirkpatrick

Master's Theses

The Horizon Simulation Framework, or HSF, is a modeling and simulation framework compiled from C/C++ source code into a command line program. Picasso is an interface designed to control the input files to Horizon by providing visual tools to create and manipulate the XML files used to define an HSF system of assets, their environment, and other simulation parameters. Picasso also supports the visualization of Horizon output in several different forms, and import mechanics from online space object catalogues.

Gìärard De Lacaze-Duthiers, Charles Pìäguy, And Edward Carpenter: An Examination Of Neo-Romantic Radicalism Before The Great War, Joseph Peterson

All Theses

The fin-de-sicle in Europe was a time in which, perhaps more than any other, thinkers framed social questions in religious, mystical, and particularly Christian, forms. The persistence, in the late 19th century, of Romantic narratives of sin and salvation coincided with the growth of organized social movements, with the result that many socialist thinkers saw the movement of history as one of redemption from some primal loss of unity. The three social thinkers which comprise this examination--GŽrard de Lacaze-Duthiers, Charles PŽguy, and Edward Carpenter--demonstrated an ambiguity between religious antecedents and engagement with contemporary problems, very like the more self-conscious fusions …

Intra- And Interpopulation Variation In Morphology And Behaviors In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Poeciliidae: Poecilia: Mollienesia), Jennifer Seda Aug 2010

Intra- And Interpopulation Variation In Morphology And Behaviors In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Poeciliidae: Poecilia: Mollienesia), Jennifer Seda

All Theses

Understanding factors that contribute to population differences can provide insight into the process of speciation, yet population level studies seldom take into account variation among individuals within a population. Such intrapopulation variation may influence the degree to which interpopulation variation in suites of traits can arise. My research focused on characterizing intra- and interpopulation variation in male morphological and behavioral traits in the sailfin molly, Poecilia latipinna. First, I characterized the overall body shape of several populations of P. latipinna collected from north Florida in two different years. I used linear morphological measurements to examine shape and found there to …

Metabolic Preconditioning Of Cells With Aicar-Riboside: Improved Cryopreservation And Cell-Type Specific Impacts On Energetics And Proliferation, Michael A. Menze, Nilay Chakraborty, Matthew Clavenna, Mitali Banerjee, Xiang Hong Liu, Mehmet Toner, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

In species whose evolutionary history has provided natural tolerance to dehydration and freezing, metabolic depression is often a pre-requisite for survival. We tested the hypothesis that preconditioning of mammalian cells with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-b-d-ribofuranoside (AICAR) to achieve metabolic depression will promote greater survivorship during cryopreservation. AICAR is used extensively to stimulate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which can result in downregulation of biosynthetic processes. We showed that the metabolic interconversion of AICAR was cell-type dependent. Accumulation of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1b-d-ribofuranosyl-5'-monophosphate (ZMP), as well as other metabolites that possess multiple phosphates (i.e., ZDP, ZTP), varied approximately 3.5-fold across the cell lines tested. AICAR treatment also significantly …

Cryptotanshinone Inhibits Cancer Cell Proliferation By Suppressing Mammalian Target Of Rapamycin - Mediated Cyclin D1 Expression And Rb Phosphorylation, Wenxing Chen, Yan Luo, Lei Liu, Hongyu Zhou, Baoshan Xu, Xiuzhen Han, Tao Shen, Zhijun Liu, Yin Lu, Shile Huang Aug 2010

Cryptotanshinone (CPT), a natural compound isolated from the plant Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, is a potential anticancer agent. However, little is known about its anticancer mechanism. Here, we show that CPT inhibited cancer cell proliferation by arresting cells in G1-G0 phase of the cell cycle. This is associated with the inhibition of cyclin D1 expression and retinoblastoma (Rb) protein phosphorylation. Furthermore, we found that CPT inhibited the signaling pathway of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a central regulator of cell proliferation. This is evidenced by the findings that CPT inhibited type I insulin-like growth factor I- or 10% fetal bovine …

Emerging evidence suggests that increases in activated T cell populations in adipose tissue may contribute toward obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. The present study investigates three unanswered questions: 1) Do adipose-resident T cells (ARTs) from lean and obese mice have altered cytokine production in response to TCR ligation?; 2) Do the extralymphoid ARTs possess a unique TCR repertoire compared with lymphoid-resident T cells and whether obesity alters the TCR diversity in specific adipose depots?; and 3) Does short-term elimination of T cells in epididymal fat pad without disturbing the systemic T cell homeostasis regulate inflammation and insulin-action during obesity? We found that …

Material Modeling And Analysis For The Development Of A Realistic Blast Headform, S. G. M. Hossain

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Blast traumatic brain injury (BTBI) has become an important topic of study because of the increase of such incidents, especially due to the recent growth of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This thesis discusses a project in which laboratory testing of BTBI was made possible by performing blast loading on experimental models simulating the human head. Three versions of experimental models were prepared – one having a simple geometry and the other two having geometry similar to a human head. For developing the head models, three important parts of the head were considered for material modeling and analysis – the skin, …

Smokers' Responses To Fearful And Disgust-Eliciting Anti-Smoking Media, Mark C. Goetz Aug 2010

Smokers' Responses To Fearful And Disgust-Eliciting Anti-Smoking Media, Mark C. Goetz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to build upon Wakefield and colleagues and Vogeltanz-Holm and colleagues hypotheses that anti-smoking ads are effective by means of eliciting negative emotional states, particularly disgust. In this study, we compared two sets of ads: those high in fear and disgust and those high in only fear. We hypothesized that subjective and physiological responses to ads high in fear and have a disgust component would be greater than for the fear-only ads. We also predicted that the ads high in disgust would have higher rates of recall and engagement. Last, we predicted that participants viewing …

New products come to market with limited experimental testing. We conducted a 10-week trial from Feb. through Apr. 1999 to test the duration and efficacy of six commercial deer repellents [Deer-Away Big Game Repellent (BGR) mix, BGR spray, Deer-Off, Deer Stopper II, Repellex, Tree Guard] and two experimental deer repellents (CU-A and CU-B) relative to each other and to untreated plants. Treated and control balled japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata) shrubs were placed at each …

Modern Transnational Yoga: A History Of Spiritual Commodification, Jon A. Brammer Aug 2010

Modern Transnational Yoga: A History Of Spiritual Commodification, Jon A. Brammer

Master of Arts in Religious Studies (M.A.R.S. Theses)

Yoga as both a physical activity and a spiritual practice has become an established part of Western culture. In recent years, the interest in postural forms of yoga and the philosophy from which they spring has developed into a multi-billion dollar industry; it has spawned volumes of popular histories and "how-to" books on the subject. However, scholars are only beginning to understand the true roots of modern transnational yoga (MTY) as it has developed in recent times. This thesis reviews the last two decades of scholarship in order to provide a credible explanation for MTY origins and argues that viewing …

The Other Race Effect : The Role Of Experience And Social Attiudes On Face Recognition, Emily Wheat Aug 2010

The Other Race Effect : The Role Of Experience And Social Attiudes On Face Recognition, Emily Wheat

Master's Theses

The ORE is phenomenon whereby recognition for own race faces is better than recognition of other race faces. This study examines how non-perceptual factors—social context, attitudes, and experience—impact the ORE. Participants from three different racial groups (Caucasian, Black, Asian) completed a face recognition task screening faces for status-specific targets (baseline, perpetrator, victim), self-report measures of explicit bias and experience with members from other races and a measure of implicit bias. Results indicated that non-perceptual factors impact the ORE. Specifically, Caucasian participants revealed a reduced ORE for other race perpetrators in comparison to victims. Black participants revealed a reduced ORE for …

Beyond Berenice : Edgar Allan Poe As A Magazine Editor, Critic, And Supporter Of Women, Karen Affinito Greco Aug 2010

Beyond Berenice : Edgar Allan Poe As A Magazine Editor, Critic, And Supporter Of Women, Karen Affinito Greco

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

While Edgar Allan Poe was editor of the New York-based Broadway Journal and the Literati o f New York in the mid 1840s, he was very supportive of female writers of the time period. Poe gave women writers including Margaret Fuller, Elizabeth Barrett Barrett, and Frances Sargent Osgood key placements in the Broadway Journal and the Literati o f New York and most often favorable reviews. These actions and feelings of support were in contrast to the overall feeling of the time period, which was that women should not venture outside the domestic arena into the literary world.

The Struggle Between The Self And Not-Self : The Influence Of Zen Buddhism And The Upanishads In Yeats’S Later Poetry, William Paul Kadar Aug 2010

The Struggle Between The Self And Not-Self : The Influence Of Zen Buddhism And The Upanishads In Yeats’S Later Poetry, William Paul Kadar

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis will examine questions about how William Butler Yeats was influenced by his exposure to eastern philosophical thinking. Yeats's work prior to 1927, before his significant and rather esoteric tome A Vision, could classify him as a proto-Romantic, but it was his work after this where we see the influence of an eastern way of thinking. Specifically, this thesis will focus on Yeats's poetry from 1927 on, with references to some of his earlier work to demonstrate how Yeats had already discovered some of the basic tenets of eastern thinking without having studied it. The initial analysis will locus …

Development Of A Rapid Method For Detection Of Bloom-Forming Cyanobacteria And Algae In Selected New Jersey Waterbodies, Ben Nyabwari Ondimu Aug 2010

Development Of A Rapid Method For Detection Of Bloom-Forming Cyanobacteria And Algae In Selected New Jersey Waterbodies, Ben Nyabwari Ondimu

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Harmful algal blooms have been reported in many parts of the world affecting water quality, human and animal health. Timely intervention depends on early detection of bloom-forming algae and cyanobacteria. Water samples were collected from 15 northern New Jersey freshwater bodies and each processed through coarse (3.0um) and fine (0.45um) pore filters which were dried then frozen at -20°C. Five small discs punched from the filters were resuspended in 500ul water for microscopic observation. Many microorganisms-cyanobacteria and algae were detected, whose distinction and identification based on morphology was not conclusive. Two genes of interest (The cyanobacterial phycocyanin and the 16S …

Heavy Metals Zinc And Cadmium Resistance And Metal Effects Within Synechococcus Sp. Iu 625, Jose Leovigildo Perez Aug 2010

Heavy Metals Zinc And Cadmium Resistance And Metal Effects Within Synechococcus Sp. Iu 625, Jose Leovigildo Perez

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Heavy metal resistance within cyanobacteria is often observed because cyanobacteria are good indicators of pollutants in the environment. Their ability to recognize the presence of many heavy metals makes cyanobacteria an important source of study. Cadmium is one of the most toxic heavy metals. Cadmium inhibits spontaneous protein folding, binds to sulphydryl groups (found in nucleic acids, proteins, and enzymes), and outcompetes essential metals for important binding sites. The effects of cadmium (CdCl2) on the growth and coupled permeability of Synechococcus sp. IU 625 was shown to inhibit Syn. sp. IU 625 cells at CdCl2 concentration 30 …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Protecting the groundwater resource in the Warri Deltaic Plain sand from the impact of anthropogenic contamination requires an understanding and knowledge of groundwater flow paths, transport processes and the source of contamination. This study was carried out to find out contaminant transport from solid domestic waste sites to the groundwater. The U.S. Geological Survey three-dimensional finite-difference code, MODFLOW, was used to simulate the groundwater flow. The flow pattern reveals predominantly downward flow, with major horizontal motion towards towns around Ekurede Urhobo and Ekurede Itsekiri in Warri. Simulation of advective contaminant transport using MODPATE1 for particle tracking indicates local movement of …

Procedural Rules Under Washington's Public Records Act: The Case For Agency Discretion, William D. Richard Aug 2010

Procedural Rules Under Washington's Public Records Act: The Case For Agency Discretion, William D. Richard

Washington Law Review

Voters adopted Washington’s Public Records Act (PRA) in 1972 as part of a broader ballot measure to enhance openness in state government. The PRA requires state government agencies, including statewide agencies and municipalities, to establish procedures so that the public can request copies of records agencies generate. The PRA exempts certain records from disclosure, and other statutes and case law supply additional exemptions. When an agency refuses to disclose records, the requester may ask a court to determine whether an exemption applies. If no exemption applies, the court may compel disclosure of the records and impose monetary penalties against the …

Vowel Recognition From Continuous Articulatory Movements For Speaker-Dependent Applications, Jun Wang, Jordan R. Green, Ashok Samal, Tom D. Carrell Aug 2010

Vowel Recognition From Continuous Articulatory Movements For Speaker-Dependent Applications, Jun Wang, Jordan R. Green, Ashok Samal, Tom D. Carrell

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

A novel approach was developed to recognize vowels from continuous tongue and lip movements. Vowels were classified based on movement patterns (rather than on derived articulatory features, e.g., lip opening) using a machine learning approach. Recognition accuracy on a single-speaker dataset was 94.02% with a very short latency. Recognition accuracy was better for high vowels than for low vowels. This finding parallels previous empirical findings on tongue movements during vowels. The recognition algorithm was then used to drive an articulation-to-acoustics synthesizer. The synthesizer recognizes vowels from continuous input stream of tongue and lip movements and plays the corresponding sound samples …

State Estimation For Diffusion Systems Using A Karhunen-Loeve-Galerkin Reduced-Order Model, Justin Mattimore Aug 2010

State Estimation For Diffusion Systems Using A Karhunen-Loeve-Galerkin Reduced-Order Model, Justin Mattimore

All Theses

This thesis focuses on generating a continuous estimate of state using a small number of sensors for a process modeled by the diffusion partial differential equation(PDE). In biological systems the diffusion of oxygen in tissue is well described by the diffusion equation, also known by biologists as Fick's first law. Mass transport of many other materials in biological systems are modeled by the diffusion PDE such as CO2, cell signaling factors, glucose and other biomolecules.
Estimating the state of a PDE is more formidable than that of a system described by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). While the state variables of …

Individual-Based Modeling Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Movements And Epizootiology, Lene Jung Kjaer Aug 2010

Individual-Based Modeling Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Movements And Epizootiology, Lene Jung Kjaer

Dissertations

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are important game mammals and potential reservoirs of diseases of domestic livestock, so diseases of deer are of great concern to wildlife managers. In many situations, models can be useful for integrating existing data, understanding disease transmission patterns, and predicting effects on host populations. Individual-based modeling (IBM) has become more commonplace in ecology as a tool to link individual behavior to population dynamics and community interactions, especially for gauging the effects of management actions. Spatially explicit IBMs are especially useful when ecological processes, such as disease transmission, are affected by the spatial composition of the environment. …

Discipleship Within The Secondary School, Jason Hilgeman Aug 2010

Discipleship Within The Secondary School, Jason Hilgeman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Understanding living for God's glory results in specific ways of thinking which inform the role of the teacher as disciple-maker in the secondary Christian school. If Christian school educators are to impact the next generation, their thinking and living should change to reflect man's ultimate purpose. This integration must occur at a fundamental level within the lives of educators in order for students to be equipped to engage culture according to their design. The writer will help to make the connection from doxological living to the practical outworking of mentoring for a Christian school educator.
