Rachel Carson And Nature As Resource, Object And Spirit : Identification, Consubstantiality, And Multiple Stakeholders In The Environmental Rhetoric Of The Conservation In Action Series., Cynthia E. Britt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project examines the Conservation in Action series, twelve texts produced by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) from 1947-1957 and developed and written by Rachel Carson and other agency employees. She developed the series to publicize the refuge service and conservation work, and I specifically focus on the first two booklets in the series, Chincoteague: A National Wildlife Refuge and Parker River: A National Wildlife Refuge, which argue the need for waterfowl sanctuaries. I analyze the texts as early examples of government environmental rhetoric produced by Carson, author of Silent Spring. For the analysis I use four …
The Effects Of Estrogen And Phytoestrogens On Focal Infarct, Pten, And P-Akt Expression In Aged Rats., Karen Powell
The Effects Of Estrogen And Phytoestrogens On Focal Infarct, Pten, And P-Akt Expression In Aged Rats., Karen Powell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Premenopausal women have fewer and less severe strokes when compared to postmenopausal females and aged matched males. The most obvious factor that could account for the observed difference is the physiological activity of Estrogen. Numerous studies over the past two decades have investigated estrogen's role as a neuroprotective agent against stroke damage. Many physiological mechanisms have been identified supporting neuroprotection; however, data also exist to suggest that estrogen may be harmful in certain situations such as those that produce high blood levels of estrogen or use estrogen in older models. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a large epidemiological study, found …
De-Differentiation Of Parotid Acinar Cells In Vitro., Andrew Scott Currie 1983-
De-Differentiation Of Parotid Acinar Cells In Vitro., Andrew Scott Currie 1983-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: When rat salivary gland cells are cultured in vitro, they dedifferentiate within 24 h. Hypothesis: Growth factors will prevent de-differentiation of primary cultures of parotid gland cells, and they will induce differentiation of ParC5 cells. DNA methylation drives de-differentiation and the loss of expression in cultured parotid cells. Methods: Rat parotid glands were collected and cultured in media using different combinations of growth factors. DNA was evaluated for methylation at various time points. Results: No media tested prevented the de-differentiation of parotid cells, and none induced differentiation of ParC5 cells. Limited variation in methylation of CpG sites was seen. …

Seed Removal By The Red-Rumped Agouti, Dasyprocta Leporina, On A Caribbean Island, Benton Taylor
All Theses
Agoutis are important seed dispersers as well as predators of numerous plant species in Neotropical continental rainforests, but little is known about their role as seed removers (dispersers and predators) on islands. We investigated seed removal of seven rain forest species on the island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles by the entire seed-remover community and specifically by the Red-rumped Agouti, Dasyprocta leporina, a scatterhoarding rodent introduced to the island approximately 2500 years ago. We recorded removal rates in three regions of Dominica from 168 experimentally placed seed groups containing a total of 1356 seeds. Seed groups were either accessible …
Grid Pricing: An Empirical Investigation Of Market Signal Clarity, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Jing Li
Grid Pricing: An Empirical Investigation Of Market Signal Clarity, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Jing Li
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The ability of the grid marketing system for fed cattle to provide an efficient price transmission mechanism is investigated. Nerlove' s (1958) adaptive expectations approach is adopted to model the relationship between grid premiums (discounts) and the weekly relative supply of carcass quality attributes. Linear regression techniques are used to estimate Nerlove's supply response function. Granger Causality tests are conducted to investigate the relationship between grid premiums (discounts) and the relative supply of carcass quality attributes. Regression estimates and the Granger Causality tests provide empirical support for the 2005 National Beef Quality Audit call for clearer market signals.

The Role Of Behavioral Temperaments On The Ecology Of The Caribbean Reef Octopus, Octopus Briareus, Timothy Jordan
The Role Of Behavioral Temperaments On The Ecology Of The Caribbean Reef Octopus, Octopus Briareus, Timothy Jordan
All Theses
Traditional studies of predator-prey interactions have primarily focused on direct consumption as the most important effect on prey. Recent studies, however, have illustrated that nonlethal, risk effects may have an even greater impact. In this study, I evaluated the role of direct consumption and risk effects of the Caribbean reef octopus, Octopus briareus, on multiple species of crab and spiny lobster prey in Florida Bay, Florida. I conducted 13 monthly censuses of 8 nearshore field sites and observed the density and distribution of octopuses, crabs and lobsters. I found a significant negative correlation between the density of octopus predators and …
The Enthymematic Model Of Meaning-Making In Video Games: Towards Narratively Designed Transmedia Texts, Kevin Human
The Enthymematic Model Of Meaning-Making In Video Games: Towards Narratively Designed Transmedia Texts, Kevin Human
All Theses
After introducing the ludological and narratological sides of modern video game theory, we explain Ian Bogost's concept of procedural rhetoric. We go on to argue that procedural rhetoric in practice is a form of what Stephen Dinehart and others have called narrative design. Furthermore, we argue that narrative design principles fall into the Aristotelian, enthymematic form of knowledge creation. We then cite examples of effective narrative design in video games and show how they fit the enthymematic model. We conclude with a discussion of how the epistemic principles of narrative design are applicable to a transmedia design context and how …

Mechanisms Of Growth And Sex Determination In The Atlantic Silverside, Menidia Menidia, And The Spatial Scale Of Local Adaptation, Tara Duffy
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Local adaptation in widely-dispersed marine species may result from strong selection on multiple life history traits that differ among populations. This results in unique sets of traits that maximize fitness of individuals within populations along the species' range. The Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, is a fish that exhibits high gene flow potential, but differences in growth and sexual differentiation among populations demonstrate strong local adaptation. To better understand the spatial pattern of local adaptation in this species, I compared the form of sex determination, which shifts from genetic to environmental sex determination, across this species' range and quantified the rate …
Water And Ion Transport In Lacrimal Gland: Models And Experiment, Wei Chieh Huang
Water And Ion Transport In Lacrimal Gland: Models And Experiment, Wei Chieh Huang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tear secretion is a complicated process that involves two different cell types. The lacrimal acinar cell is thought to secrete a hypertonic primary fluid with a high K+ concentration. This fluid is then modified by the ductal epithelia and transported to the avascular ocular surface. It is known that both sympathetic and parasympathetic input trigger protein release, but the role of adrenergic stimulation on water secretion in lacrimal gland remains unclear. Therefore, the first goal of this dissertation is to examine the influence ofΑ- andΒ-adrenergic activation on tear fluid production.Tear secretion requires coordination of different membrane channels and transporters. Walcott …
Determining The Role Of Natural Selection In Plant Invasion: A Study Of Introduced Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia Japonica) And A Native Relative, Woodland Knotweed (Persicaria Virginiana), Kelly L. O'Donnell
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The ecological and evolutionary study of plant invasion processes is of exceeding importance in today's changing environment. However, few studies have addressed the impact of natural selection on invasive plant species. While scientists have been able to detect selection in natural populations, most studies are not replicated in space or time leading to unreliable statistical estimates and tentative causal analyses. My objective was to further our knowledge of selection dynamics in the wild by working in the area of invasion biology through studies that combine both field and controlled settings. It has been suggested that plant invasion affords us the …
Benthic-Pelagic Coupling In Eutrophic Estuaries From The Temperate And Sub-Tropical Zones: The Contrasting Roles Of Benthic Suspension-Feeding And Nutrient Loading, Charles C. Wall
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Coastal waters have suffered from multiple stressors that have diminished habitat value and living marine resources in estuaries. Excess nutrient loading, leading to eutrophication, has been identified as a primary driver of these changes. Some level of nutrient loading is necessary to sustain production in marine systems, but the level of appropriate nutrient loading for a given estuary or resource species is unknown. Benthic suspension feeders, such as bivalves and sponges, have the potential to buffer or mediate eutrophication through their filtration activities. Many eutrophic systems have lost suspension feeders due to overharvesting, disease, and harmful algal blooms. In a …

Genetic Analysis Of The Gaba Synthetic Enzymes: From Synapse Development To Activity Dependent Transcription, Xiaoyun Wu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
GABA mediates inhibitory synaptic transmission in the mammalian brain. GABA is synthesized through two glutamate decarboxylases, GAD67 and GAD65. My thesis addresses two questions of GABA signaling through the genetic manipulation of the GABA synthetic enzymes.First, I examined the role of GABA transmission in inhibitory synapse development in the mouse neocortex. I used a genetic strategy to specifically block GABA synthesis or release in single neurons and examined the impact on axon and synapse development. Such cell autonomous manipulation of GABA signaling without disturbing circuitactivity level is critical to reveal its precise function in synapse formation. Chronic blockade of transmission …
Leaf Toughness And Cyanide Defense Of Passiflora Dioscoreifolia In Varied Light Habitats, August 2010, James Bellush
Leaf Toughness And Cyanide Defense Of Passiflora Dioscoreifolia In Varied Light Habitats, August 2010, James Bellush
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Coevolution can lead to complex biological relationships between tropical plants and herbivores, as with Passiflora (Passifloraceae) vines and heliconiine butterflies (Nymphalidae: Heliconiiae). Constant herbivory from heliconiine butterflies has led to the development of cyanide-based defensive compounds by Passiflora, in addition to the more general defense of toughening leaves, found in all plants. To observe the effect of light availability on leaf toughness and cyanide content in Passiflora dioscoreifolia, leaves from twenty plants in sun and shade habitats were sampled in the forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica and tested for their leaf toughness and cyanide content. Plants in the sun habitat …

The Role Of Size, Social Interaction And Predation On Metachrosis Of The Green Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus Malachiticus), August 2010, Daniel Whonsetler
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Metachrosis, or color change, in lizards may have social or antipredator functions. The purpose of this study was to determine impact of size, social interaction and predatory pressures on metachrosis in S. malachiticus. Nine lizards were collected and photographed to quantify their initial color. The snout-vent length and photographed color (as hue, saturation and brightness) were measured and compared (Spearman Rank Correlation, P > 0.60), showing no significant correlation. Lizards were then paired and allowed to interact for thirty minutes, once with every lizard and photographed after. Interactions were broken down into three groups (same size, with larger, with smaller), where …

Ecotourism, Environmental Awareness And Green Living In Costa Rica, August 2010, Alexandra Sanserino
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Over the past 30 years, Monteverde, Costa Rica, has adopted ecotourism as its primary source of revenue. Since the inception of ecotourism in tropical regions, many studies have been done on both the positives (more conservation) and negatives (littering, pollution, etc.) associated with it. With the knowledge of both the benefits and consequences associated with ecotourism, the government of Costa Rica has adopted an environmental education program to make residents aware of environmental issues and give them the tools to protect the environment through their daily activities. But just how effective is this program? The current study compares environmental awareness …

Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) plays a role in both angiogenesis and seminiferous cord formation, and alternative splicing of the Vegfa gene produces both proangiogenic isoforms and antiangiogenic isoforms (B-isoforms). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the expression of pro- and antiangiogenic isoforms during testis development and to determine the role of VEGFA isoforms in testis morphogenesis. Quantitative RT-PCR determined that Vegfa_165b mRNA was most abundant between embryonic days 13.5 and 16 (E13.5 and 16; P < 0.05). Compared with ovarian mRNA levels, Vegfa_120 was more abundant at E13–14 (P < 0.05), Vegfa_164 was less abundant at E13 (P < 0.05), and Vegfa_165b tended to be less abundant …

Feeding Corn Milling Co-Products To Forage Fed Cattle, 1st Edition, Aaron Stalker, Rick Rasby, Galen E. Erickson, Crystal Buckner, Terry J. Klopfenstein
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Introduction
Beef calves from weaning until they enter feedlots, developing heifers, and beef cows are fed primarily forage diets. Especially in the winter, forages are low in protein and phosphorus and need to be supplemented. Corn milling co-products are excellent sources of both protein and phosphorus and fi t nicely into winter supplementation programs. Corn milling co-products are also an excellent source of energy and are particularly well suited to forage based diets.
Two primary types of milling processes currently exist, resulting in quite diff erent feed products. The dry milling process produces distillers grains plus solubles (DGS), and the …

Although we know that stereotyping is not an accurate way to appreciate human beings, nevertheless, it is still used as a means to assess human behavior and consequently, misconceptions occur. One of the dominant groups living in Malaysia is the Malays who are often perceived more positively than others. Of the three dominant ethnic groups found in peninsular Malaysia, they are often described as a graceful community which places great emphasis on respect and care for the feeling of others and are imbued with refined behavior through appropriate upbringing and religious values. The Malay community tends to avoid conflicts and …

Comparison Of Connectedness Measures And Changes In Connectedness Of The U.S. Duroc Population, N. Soga, Matthew L. Spangler, C. R. Schwab, P. J. Berger, T. J. Baas
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Introduction
Low levels of connectedness can create problems in uncoupling genetic and environmental influences on phenotypes. This can result in bias in prediction error variance and covariance, decreasing the accuracy of comparison of EBV across herds (Smith and Banos, 1991; Kennedy and Trus, 1993). The main objective of this study was to compare connectedness statistics published in the literature and determine which measure is most practical or suitable for estimating the risk associated with EBV comparisons in an across-herd analysis and to determine changes in connectedness in the U.S. Duroc population over time.

Creating Touchpanel Graphics For Control Systems, Lucas Mcdaniel
All Theses
More often than system designers would like to admit, a discrepancy lies between the implementation of audiovisual control systems and their apparent ease of use to a novice or casual user. System designers and programmers are often hampered by the software tools provided by industry manufacturers and cannot reliably create desirable graphical interfaces that match the level of systems they are asked to program and install.
Popular consumer trends in portable touchscreen devices, pioneered on devices such as the Apple iPhone, light a way forward into a new era of elegantly solving the audiovisual control system graphical user interface problem. …

Process Development For The Fractionation And Isolation Of Corn Fiber Hemicellulose, Justin Montanti
Process Development For The Fractionation And Isolation Of Corn Fiber Hemicellulose, Justin Montanti
All Theses
Corn fiber is a co-product of the corn wet-milling process that holds potential to become a value-added product. A process was developed to fractionate and isolate the hemicellulose B component of corn fiber generated by corn wet milling. The process consisted of pretreatment by soaking in aqueous ammonia (SAA) of starch-free corn fiber followed by enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis, during which the hemicellulose B was solubilized by cleavage into xylo-oligosaccharides. The hemicellulose A and B fractions were separated by adjustment of pH, and the hemicellulose B recovered by precipitation with ethanol.
The pretreatment step resulted in a high retention of major …
