Population Ecology Of Banner-Tailed Kangaroo Rats (Dipodomys Spectabilis) In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2005-2009), Andrew Edelman
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
From March 2005-Februaury 2009, a population of banner-tailed kangaroo rats was monitored using mark-recapture methods. All active kangaroo rat mounds on the 18-ha Nunn Flats site were trapped monthly. All captured individuals were marked and reproductive status and mass were recorded. From February to July 2008 a subset of adult females received supplemental food. This dataset was collected to observe the survivorship, reproduction, and dispersal of banner-tailed kangaroo rats in response to changes in resources and density. Both observational and experimental methods were used to observe how ecological constraints affected juvenile dispersal.

Pino Gate Prairie Dog Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Mound-Scale Lizard Data (2000-2002), Ana Davidson, David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Keystone species have large impacts on community and ecosystem properties, and create important ecological interactions with other species. Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) and banner-tailed kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis) are considered keystone species of grassland ecosystems, and create a mosaic of unique habitats on the landscape. These habitats are known to attract a number of animal species, but little is known about how they affect lizard communities. Our research evaluated the keystone roles of prairie dogs and kangaroo rats on lizards at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico, USA. We evaluated the impacts of these rodents on lizard …

Effects Of Kangaroo Rats On Plant Species Dominance In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1988), Debra Peters, Scott Collins
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Our objective was to evaluate the effects of burrowing activities by banner-tail kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis Merriam) on plant community structure and species dominance for two patch types at an ecotone between shortgrass steppe and desert grasslands in New Mexico, USA. Ten mounds produced by kangaroo rats were selected in patches dominated by Bouteloua gracilis (the dominant in shortgrass steppe communities) and ten mounds were selected in patches dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (the dominant in Chihuahuan desert grasslands). Plant cover and density by species were sampled from three locations associated with each mound: the mound proper, the edge of the …
Small Mammal Exclosure Study (Smes) Vegetation Data From The Chihuahuan Desert Grassland And Shrubland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1995-2009), David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
This is data for vegetation canopy cover measured from each of the SMES study plots. Vegetation canopy cover was measured from each of the 36 one-meter2 quadrats twice each year. Animal consumers have important roles in ecosystems, determining plant species composition and structure, regulating rates of plant production and nutrient, and altering soil structure and chemistry. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the activities of small mammals regulate plant community structure, plant species diversity, and spatial vegetation patterns in Chihuahuan Desert shrublands and grasslands.

New Views On Strand Asymmetry In Insect Mitochondrial Genomes, Shu-Jun Wei, Min Shi, Xue-Xin Chen, Michael J. Sharkey, Cornelis Van Achterberg, Gong-Yin Ye, Jun-Hua He
Entomology Faculty Publications
Strand asymmetry in nucleotide composition is a remarkable feature of animal mitochondrial genomes. Understanding the mutation processes that shape strand asymmetry is essential for comprehensive knowledge of genome evolution, demographical population history and accurate phylogenetic inference. Previous studies found that the relative contributions of different substitution types to strand asymmetry are associated with replication alone or both replication and transcription. However, the relative contributions of replication and transcription to strand asymmetry remain unclear. Here we conducted a broad survey of strand asymmetry across 120 insect mitochondrial genomes, with special reference to the correlation between the signs of skew values and …

Visual Inspiration From Modern Art- My Reflections On Symbolism, Surrealism, And Impressionism, Ning Su
Visual Inspiration From Modern Art- My Reflections On Symbolism, Surrealism, And Impressionism, Ning Su
Theses
My thesis project is a digital graphics book demonstrating my reflections on three schools of Modern Art: Symbolism, Surrealism, and Impressionism. I was inspired by the artists' elegant masterpieces, so I created my own characters and scenes inspired by the three schools, and integrated them into my art world to express my aesthetic taste. It will take the viewers on a trip of the visual appreciation of Modern Art through my eyes. All the images in the book are implemented in 3D computer-generated environment and with 2D stylized hand drawings. The 3D images are the representation of my comprehension of …

Background: Chronic disease accounts for nearly three-quarters of US deaths, yet prevalence rates are not consistently reported at the state level and are not available at the sub-state level. This makes it difficult to assess trends in prevalence and impossible to measure sub-state differences. Such county-level differences could inform and direct the delivery of health services to those with the greatest need. Methods: We used a database of prescription drugs filled in the US as a proxy for nationwide, county-level prevalence of three top causes of death: heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. We tested whether prescription data are statistically valid proxy …
Repression Of Wnt Signaling By A Fer-Type Nonreceptor Tyrosine Kinase, Aaron P. Putzke, Joel H. Rothman
Repression Of Wnt Signaling By A Fer-Type Nonreceptor Tyrosine Kinase, Aaron P. Putzke, Joel H. Rothman
Faculty Publications
The Wnt signaling pathway must be properly modulated to ensure an appropriate output: pathological conditions result from either insufficient or excessive levels of Wnt signal. For example, hyperactivation of the Wnt pathway is associated with various cancers and subnormal Wnt signaling can lead to increased invasiveness of tumor cells. We found that the Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog of the Fer nonreceptor tyrosine kinase, FRK-1, limits Wnt signaling by preventing the adhesion complex-associated beta-catenin, HMP-2, from participating in Wnt-dependent specification of the endoderm during embryogenesis. Removal of FRK-1 function results in relocalization of HMP-2 to the nucleus of epidermal cells, and allows …

Healing Each Other : A Qualitative Study Of Therapist Perspectives At An Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Program In Boulder, Colorado : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Samantha Shalen Pugh
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This project utilized qualitative interviews to examine therapist perspectives at an Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) program in Boulder, Colorado. The program, called the HopeFoal Project, pairs rescue foals with high-risk teen girls; a reciprocal healing model is employed in which teen and foal are engaged in a parallel process of trust-building and healing from traumatic early experiences. The program is unique in its use of unpredictable or difficult horses in treatment, as well as in its use of a reciprocal healing model. Semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with three program therapists to gain a better understanding of the program. Findings revealed …
Marker Free Transgenic Plants: Engineering The Chloroplast Genome Without The Use Of Antibiotic Selection, Henry Daniell
Marker Free Transgenic Plants: Engineering The Chloroplast Genome Without The Use Of Antibiotic Selection, Henry Daniell
UCF Patents
The present invention provides for a method to circumvent the problem of using antibiotic resistant selectable markers. In particular, target plants are transformed using a plastid vector which contains heterologous DNA sequences coding for a phytotoxin detoxifying enzyme or protein. The selection process involves converting a antibiotic-free phytotoxic agent by the expressed phytotoxin detoxifying enzyme or protein to yield a nontoxic compound. The invention provides for various methods to use antibiotic-free selection in chloroplast transformation.

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
This paper develops an organisation design-oriented conceptual model of scientific knowledge production through citizen science virtual organisations. Citizen science is a form of organisation design for collaborative scientific research involving scientists and volunteers, for which internet-based modes of participation enable massive virtual collaboration by thousands of members of the public. The conceptual model provides an example of a theory development process and discusses its application to an exploratory study. The paper contributes a multi-level process model for organising investigation into the impact of design on this form of scientific knowledge production.
The Relevance Of The Natural Environment To Social Work : A Comparison Of Fields That Consider The Natural Environment In Social Problems : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, John D. Ritchie
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Given the natural environment's importance to humans, this study was undertaken to understand how social work has considered the natural environment in approaching social problems compared to other fields that consider the natural environment. In addition, comparing literature from several fields, the author sought to evaluate the adequacy of social work's attention to the natural environment as the field analyzes and conceives solutions to social problems and carries out its mission. The study examined the gaps in social work literature regarding the natural environment. The author compared published literature from social work, psychology, environmental health and medicine, and environmentalism to …

No Inhiibitions, No Moral Sense, And No Social Structure : The Etiology Of The Psychopath And The Sociopath : A Project Based Upon Independent Investigation, Chad Melvin O'Brien
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Psychopathy and sociopathy are two personality disorders that are similar in action though different in origin. Whereas the psychopathic individual is a product of nature in that the origin of the social disorder originates in the mind, the sociopathic individual is a product of upbringing as sociopathy is more so a result of a learned/defensive behavior. Although the number is uncertain, there could be as many as ten million psychopathic and sociopathic people living in the United States today. This paper focuses on the etiology of both psychopathy and sociopathy. It also looks at how psychopathy and sociopathy are recognized …

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a myocardial disorder characterized by left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy without dilatation and without apparent cause (ie, it occurs in the absence of severe hypertension, aortic stenosis, or other cardiac or systemic diseases that might cause LV hypertrophy). Numerous excellent reviews and consensus documents provide a wealth of additional background.1–8 HCM is the leading cause of sudden death in young people and leads to significant disability in survivors. It is caused by mutations in genes that encode components of the sarcomere. Cardiomyocyte and cardiac hypertrophy, myocyte disarray, interstitial and replacement fibrosis, and dysplastic intramyocardial arterioles characterize the …
