Not Playing House The Way Mom And Dad Do : Same-Sex Commitment Without Marriage : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Amanda Gail Sommers

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory study reveals the narratives of long-term, committed same-sex couples living in the Bay area of California, who decided not to marry in 2008 when it was temporarily legal. Thirteen participants were interviewed and their responses were transcribed and analyzed. They were asked to explain personal, social, and political influences on their perspectives on marriage. They were also asked to define commitment and the commitment markers used in their relationships. Lastly, they were questioned about their relationship with the current marriage equality movement. Findings revealed that participants refrained from marrying due to negative associations they have developed toward the …

Specific Effect Of Modeling On Young Children's Word Production, Harrie Boelens, Berend Hofman, Taiss Tamaddoni, Katja Eenink Sep 2010

Specific Effect Of Modeling On Young Children's Word Production, Harrie Boelens, Berend Hofman, Taiss Tamaddoni, Katja Eenink

The Psychological Record

Effects of object-name contiguity on word production were examined in 1 Y2- to 2-yr-old children. Two objects and two spoken names were presented in each of three experiments. Each object was the referent of 1 spoken name. An object was presented either together with its spoken name (modeling trial) or alone (test trial). Modeling trials and test trials were mixed with trials that presented familiar stimuli. Referent-specific productions of the experimental names developed on the test trials. This was found immediately after modeling (Experiment 1), and at least 1 day later (Experiments 2 and 3). Further, it was found not …

Scriptures, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Introduction

Interchangeable with holy/sacred book, “scriptures” is the English language term that is still popularly used to refer to a text or collection of texts deemed to be of special if not unique origins, authority and power. Users of the term also tend to assume that “the Bible” of the Jewish and Christian traditions represents either the only instance of such or the example par excellence among some others. A popular linguistic and rhetorical placeholder among cultures of Indo-European origins, the English term originally simply meant (from the Greek graphe/-ai, ta biblia; Latin, scriptura/-ae; Hebrew, ketav/-uvim) and continues to mean …

Antioxidant Polymorphisms And Susceptibility To Solvent- Induced Hearing Loss In Factory Workers, Robert Udell Glazier Sep 2010

Antioxidant Polymorphisms And Susceptibility To Solvent- Induced Hearing Loss In Factory Workers, Robert Udell Glazier

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Occupational exposure-related hearing loss is a significant health concern for affected workers. Organic solvent exposure has emerged as an important contributor to hearing loss. It is thought that hearing loss related to solvent and noise exposure is mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The glutathione associated enzymes and the manganese superoxide dismutase enzymes (SOD2) are important components of the cochlear hair cellâs defense against oxidative stress. This study is aimed to determine whether polymorphisms within the glutathione S-transferases (GST) P1 and GSTM1, glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1), and SOD2 are associated with hearing status in solvent exposed factory workers. Genotypes for …

Journal Articles: Radiology

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the present manuscript is to test the hypothesis that arthrotropic localization and synovial cell internalization account for the unique capacity of N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) copolymer-dexamethasone conjugate (P-Dex, a macromolecular prodrug of dexamethasone) to induce sustained amelioration of joint inflammation and inhibition of tissue damage in an animal model of inflammatory arthritis.

METHODS: Rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA) were treated with P-Dex, free dexamethasone, saline or HPMA homopolymer. To define the biodistribution of P-Dex, conjugates with different imaging labels were given to AA rats and analyzed. Isolated joint tissues were evaluated by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and immunohistochemical …

Nanoparticle Use In The Modulation Of Transplant Rejection In A Murine Model, Elias Noah Kassis Sep 2010

Nanoparticle Use In The Modulation Of Transplant Rejection In A Murine Model, Elias Noah Kassis

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Solid organ transplant has emerged over the last half century as an important treatment for solid organ failure. Management has matured dramatically over the past two decades with improvements in acute rejection, but long-term graft survival has improved very little and current treatment is limited by the side-effects and toxicities of immunosuppressive medications. Nanoparticle delivery of therapeutics, improving transport characteristics and decreasing systemic and local toxicity has emerged as a dynamic treatment modality, but little work has been done using nanoparticles in transplantation. Our research examined the use of CD4-targeted nanoparticles encapsulated with mycophenolic acid (MPA), a commonly used immunosuppressant …

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler Sep 2010

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler

Psychology ETDs

This study tested the relationship between short-term neuroplasticity and individual differences in intelligence. Twenty-two participants completed cognitive testing and a visual EEG experiment involving exposures to repeated and novel stimuli. Time-frequency analyses of phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced) power showed a small effect of decreasing evoked/induced theta (4-8 Hz) ratios over stimulus exposures, irrespective of condition. Hypotheses that intelligence would relate to an increase in this ratio over exposures were not supported. However, the magnitude of the ratio positively correlated with intelligence; while the amount of induced gamma (30-50Hz) activation pre- to post-stimulus was highly inversely related to g. Results …

Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap Sep 2010

Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap

Psychology ETDs

Research on offspring sex ratios and parental condition indicate that parents in better condition may benefit from biasing their offspring toward sons. While measures of phenotypic quality and offspring sex ratio have been examined in other animals, the current study was designed to look at this relationship within human families. I investigated the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and facial masculinity, both possible measures of phenotype, and offspring sex ratio within families. The results were mixed. The fluctuating asymmetry of one sibling covaried negatively with the overall offspring sex ratio within their family. The significant negative correlation between the two provides …

Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman Sep 2010

Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman

Psychology ETDs

The association between oxidative stress and quality of romantic relationships was investigated in a sample of 98 college males. Given a postulated life history trade-off between current and future reproductive potential, men currently in higher quality romantic relationships may expend less general mating effort (i.e., less energy allocation to finding, attracting, and competing for new mates) than single men or men in lesser quality relationships. Reduced mating effort may allow greater allocation of energy to anti-oxidant defense systems, and increased resistance to oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consistent with this prediction, men who reported being in higher quality …

Neurometabolism And Cognitive Functioning In Healthy Children : A Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study, April Lightsey Sep 2010

Neurometabolism And Cognitive Functioning In Healthy Children : A Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study, April Lightsey

Psychology ETDs

This study investigated the role of sex, mean NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr, and variability in these metabolites in predicting memory and processing speed. This study utilized predictive models including sex, mean ratios of NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr, as well as the standard deviation of these ratios, within tissue type, among voxels in a supraventricular slice. In addition, models included interaction terms between each neurometabolic variable and sex. Tests of memory and processing speed were then regressed in a three-step hierarchical regression onto sex, main effects for neurometabolites, and interaction effects. The regression of memory was significant in the model including interaction terms, …
