Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
MECHANISMS OF INTERLEUKIN-1â PRODUCTION IN CHLAMYDIA TRACHOMATIS INFECTED TROPHOBLASTS. Crina M. Boeras, Vikki Abrahams, and Paula B. Kavathas. Department of Laboratory Medicine, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. In a normal pregnancy the immune system plays the critical task of protecting the fetus from the constant threat posed by pathogens while limiting the effects of the mothers immune response on the fetus itself. Viral and bacterial infections can cause preterm labor and intrauterine growth restriction, and the placental trophoblasts express pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) to help detect invading pathogens and initiate an effective immune response. Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) …

Finding Ms. Gladden: A Writing Teacher's Confessional Journey To Self-Discovery, Julie Mccown Gladden
Theses and Dissertations
"Finding Ms. Gladden: A Writing Teacher's Confessional Journey to Self-Discovery" is a collection of stories detailing my journey to develop the "teacher's persona." The beginning stories detail my experiences in the substitute teaching classroom, the University Writing Center, and the teaching assistant training workshop. The stories at the end of the journey deal with my adventures on the first day of class as a first time college-level writing instructor. The exploration of the development of my "teaching persona" ends with the discovery of my true teaching self.
Twenty-Seven Authentically-Based Esl Grammar Supplements: Shifting From Form To Function, Kelly Phillip
Twenty-Seven Authentically-Based Esl Grammar Supplements: Shifting From Form To Function, Kelly Phillip
Theses and Dissertations
The language teaching profession has seen many changes in how to teach grammar in the language classroom. The pendulum has swung widely from a grammar only approach to an almost complete omission of its teaching. In general, teaching grammar can be a very daunting endeavor even for the most skilled educator. In addition, some language teachers do not have authentic materials or are using books that have sentence-based grammar exercises. The focus of this thesis is to determine the importance of grammar and communicative activities in the language classroom and to design authentically-based grammar supplements that are grammar-based but still …
Tangles: Conversations About My Life, Patricia M. Hornbeck
Tangles: Conversations About My Life, Patricia M. Hornbeck
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a collection of nonfiction narrative essays. It reveals an examination of my life from childhood through several crises, recounting episodes within a dysfunctional nuclear family, marriage at an early age, and serious illness in my twenties. The autobiographical pieces reveal my journey out of childhood poverty, to becoming a successful parent, eventually divorcing, and entering college as an adult student. Each piece tells part of my story in coming closer to self-actualization and independence. It begins with a brief introduction followed by seven chapters. The final, concluding chapter explores my thoughts, memories, teachers, and theories that have …

Gender Bias As Evidenced On Political Blogs In The 2008 Presidential Election, Lori Ann Gardner
Gender Bias As Evidenced On Political Blogs In The 2008 Presidential Election, Lori Ann Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Political blogs played a significant role in the 2008 presidential election serving not only as news sources on the latest political coverage, but also as communities where people expressed political opinions, interacted with others who shared similar beliefs, as well as attempt to persuade and influence the audience members, often making calls to action. A rhetorical analysis, drawing from gendered mediation and frame theory, of 183 political blog posts revealed that gendered mediation was quite common on blog posts in the 2008 presidential election. Further, the mediation was often followed by gendered discourse that was much more blatant in content …

A Comparative Study Of Fat Storage Quantitation In Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans Using Label And Label-Free Methods., Kelvin Yen, Thuc T. Le, Ankita Bansal, Sri Devi Narasimhan, Ji-Xin Cheng, Heidi A. Tissenbaum
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been employed as a model organism to study human obesity due to the conservation of the pathways that regulate energy metabolism. To assay for fat storage in C. elegans, a number of fat-soluble dyes have been employed including BODIPY, Nile Red, Oil Red O, and Sudan Black. However, dye-labeled assays produce results that often do not correlate with fat stores in C. elegans. An alternative label-free approach to analyze fat storage in C. elegans has recently been described with coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. Here, we compare the performance of CARS microscopy …

Caught Between Two Paradigms: Changes In The Community Foundation Field And The Rhetoric Of Community Foundation Websites, Sarah Elizabeth Kinser
Caught Between Two Paradigms: Changes In The Community Foundation Field And The Rhetoric Of Community Foundation Websites, Sarah Elizabeth Kinser
Theses and Dissertations
In this investigation, I analyzed the websites of three community foundations and interviewed communications personnel from each foundation to determine how and to what extent their websites address the rhetorical challenges implied by ongoing changes in the field that necessitate a more collaborative, community-oriented approach. The stated key messages of the personnel I interviewed emphasize community involvement and partnership, yet their comments indicate that they view their websites as tools for informing rather than interacting. The sites' structure and functionality foreground institutional information and push community-oriented and interactive content to the periphery. Additionally, the sites' formal language and use of …

The Use Of Audience Response Systems In Nursing Education: Best Practice Guidelines, Nicole Mareno, Marie Bremner, Christie Emerson
The Use Of Audience Response Systems In Nursing Education: Best Practice Guidelines, Nicole Mareno, Marie Bremner, Christie Emerson
Faculty Articles
The use of Audience Response Systems (ARS) or 'clickers' as an active learning strategy in nursing education has been steadily on the rise. ARS technology allows the dynamic engagement of students in the classroom by providing immediate two-way communication between faculty and students. ARS can be used to explore knowledge and common misconceptions, act as a springboard for classroom discussions, and can be used for testing or evaluation. The aim of this paper is to present best practice guidelines for both novice and experienced ARS technology users. A summary of the state of the research in this area will be …

“The Golden Door”: Does Business Hold The Key?, Sally A. Kenel, Ellen K. Boegel Esq.
“The Golden Door”: Does Business Hold The Key?, Sally A. Kenel, Ellen K. Boegel Esq.
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
“The New Colossus,” Emma Lazarus’ poem, although a later addition to Liberty Island, has now become synonymous with the Statue of Liberty itself. Its words, however, are not without controversy. Was Lazarus arguing that the United States is morally obligated to open her door to the poor and the oppressed? If so, what role does/should business play in granting immigrants entry? The poem frames this discussion of a contemporary understanding of what it means to be human in a global society and, building on this concept, the paper evaluates current US employment-based immigration law and suggests a paradigm to assess …

The Anchor, Volume 124.03: September 15, 2010, Hope College
The Anchor: 2010
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
