Glenna Snow's Cook Book: Home Tested Recipes By Beacon Journal Readers, Glenna Snow, Kevin F. Kern

University of Akron Press Publications

Glenna Snow was the home economics editor for the Akron Beacon Journal in the 1930s and 1940s. Snow and the newspaper produced a book of readers' recipes in 1938. Six years later, adding more recipes and a substitution section due to government rationing during WWII, the 1944 edition was published. Introduced by historian, Kevin Kern, this reprint edition contains1385 "recipes in a readable form so that each ingredient, with its amount falls into the proper place at the proper time, to give the best results." Junk Science, Test Validity, And The Uniform Guidelines For Personnel Selection Procedures: The Case Of Melendez V. Illinois Bell, Fred B. Bryant, Elaine K.B Siegel Sep 2010

Junk Science, Test Validity, And The Uniform Guidelines For Personnel Selection Procedures: The Case Of Melendez V. Illinois Bell, Fred B. Bryant, Elaine K.B Siegel

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper stems from a recent federal court case in which a standardized test of cognitive ability developed by AT&T, the Basic Scholastic Aptitude Test (BSAT), was ruled invalid and discriminatory for use in hiring Latinos. Within the context of the BSAT, we discuss spurious statistical arguments advanced by the defense, exploiting certain language in the current Uniform Guidelines for evaluating the fairness and validity of personnel selection tests. These issues include: (a) how to avoid capitalizing on chance; (b) what constitutes “a measure” of job performance; (c) how to judge the meaningfulness of group differences in performance measures; and …

The Terebridae And Teretoxins: Combining Phylogeny And Anatomy For Concerted Discovery Of Bioactive Compounds, Nicolas Puillandre, Mandë Holford Sep 2010

The Terebridae And Teretoxins: Combining Phylogeny And Anatomy For Concerted Discovery Of Bioactive Compounds, Nicolas Puillandre, Mandë Holford

Publications and Research

The Conoidea superfamily, comprised of cone snails, terebrids, and turrids, is an exceptionally promising group for the discovery of natural peptide toxins. The potential of conoidean toxins has been realized with the distribution of the first Conus (cone snail) drug, Prialt (ziconotide), an analgesic used to alleviate chronic pain in HIV and cancer patients. Cone snail toxins (conotoxins) are highly variable, a consequence of a high mutation rate associated to duplication events and positive selection. As Conus and terebrids diverged in the early Paleocene, the toxins from terebrids (teretoxins) may demonstrate highly divergent and unique functionalities. Recent analyses of the …

Evaluating Stormwater Best Management Practices In A Small Urban Watershed, Kerry Gregg Bassore Sep 2010

Evaluating Stormwater Best Management Practices In A Small Urban Watershed, Kerry Gregg Bassore

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Urban growth adversely affects water quality by increasing the amount of nonpoint source pollutants that are transported to receiving waters. Phase IT of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) is a regulatory program designed to confront the non-point source pollution problem. Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is one of many counties that are required to identify Best Management Practices (BMPs) to control non-point source pollution under Phase IT of the NPDES. The Adobe Acres stormwater lift station drains storm flows that originate from an urban residential area in Bernalillo County and discharge to the Rio Grande. This project begins to …

Appropriate Erosion Control Techniques For The Rural Hillsides Of Honduras, Meaghan O'Rourke Sep 2010

Appropriate Erosion Control Techniques For The Rural Hillsides Of Honduras, Meaghan O'Rourke

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The rural hillside farmers of Honduras live extremely rudimentary lifestyles with little to no outside income. They choose available parcels of land for their cultivation needs and clear the land using slash and burn techniques. The combination of the steep slopes and the lack of erosion control equates to significant soil loss. The agricultural production determines to the quality of life for the hillside families. Typical erosion control measures, such as terraces, are exceedingly labor intensive for the rural hillside farmers. The average family lives on a section of land until the soil is no longer productive (between two and …

An Assessment Of Domestic Water Consumption Discrepancies Between Commercial Farms And Majengos Along South Moi Lake Road, Lake Naivasha, Kenya, Barbara Heemink Sep 2010

An Assessment Of Domestic Water Consumption Discrepancies Between Commercial Farms And Majengos Along South Moi Lake Road, Lake Naivasha, Kenya, Barbara Heemink

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The overall intent of this professional project was to provide a preliminary assessment of domestic water consumption discrepancies between commercial farms and majengos at Lake Naivasha, Kenya. As this issue of concern had not been previously studied, pre-determined factors known to incur domestic water consumption discrepancies were utilized, in relation to a regulatory setting, with the purpose of llustrating the viability of this problem. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya, Africa. Over the last fifteen years, the horticulture and floriculture industry at Lake Naivasha has steadily grown, with the most intense development occurring …

Volunteer River Monitoring Plan For The Urban Reach Of The Santa Fe River Watershed, Joy K. O'Neil Sep 2010

Volunteer River Monitoring Plan For The Urban Reach Of The Santa Fe River Watershed, Joy K. O'Neil

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

In designing a monitoring plan, it is important to first look at the overview of the watershed, issues and uses. In our case, we are looking at the Santa Fe River Watershed. It is 241 square miles and approximately 37 miles in river length. The headwaters are in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Santa Fe Lake east of the City of Santa Fe. The watershed is split into three reaches: forested, urban and rural. In the forested reach, the river is perennial and flow is captured by a sequence of dams. The water is used for drinking supply. The …

Dipolar Cortico-Muscular Electrical Stimulation: A Novel Method That Enhances Motor Function In Both - Normal And Spinal Cord Injured Mice, Zaghloul Ahmed Sep 2010

Dipolar Cortico-Muscular Electrical Stimulation: A Novel Method That Enhances Motor Function In Both - Normal And Spinal Cord Injured Mice, Zaghloul Ahmed

Publications and Research

Background Electrical stimulation of the central and peripheral nervous systems is a common tool that is used to improve functional recovery after neuronal injury. Methods Here we described a new configuration of electrical stimulation as it was tested in anesthetized control and spinal cord injury (SCI) mice. Constant voltage output was delivered through two electrodes. While the negative voltage output (ranging from -1.8 to -2.6 V) was delivered to the muscle via transverse wire electrodes (diameter, 500 μm) located at opposite ends of the muscle, the positive output (ranging from + 2.4 to +3.2 V) was delivered to the primary …

Epigenetic Programming Of Blood Vessel Identity, Aaron Weldon Aday

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

EPIGENETIC PROGRAMMING OF BLOOD VESSEL IDENTITY. Aaron W. Aday, Lihua J. Zhu, and Nathan D. Lawson. Program in Gene Function and Expression, UMass Medical School, Worcester, MA. (Sponsored by Michael Simons, Section of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT). Recent studies have revealed details of the signaling pathways controlling blood vessel development and function. However, little is known about what controls endothelial cell identity in different blood vessel types. It is important to identify transcriptional control elements that function in endothelial cells in order to examine their roles in differentiation and vascular …
